CPHS Basketball: Sandite of the Week Destiny Johnson
/Charles Page High School senior Destiny Johnson has been on a roll lately, averaging 26.7 points per game over the past two weeks. The University of Tulsa-commit has led the Sandites in three-straight games, helping her team secure the Frontier Valley Conference title, as well as an Area playoff berth.
Last week the Class 6A No. 6 ranked Lady Sandites (19-4) beat Bixby 40-39 and Sapulpa 50-46 for their second Conference title in the past three seasons. On Thursday the girls beat Owasso 67-55 in the first round of the Regional Tournament to advance to the Area playoffs for the fifth-straight year. They will play Ponca City Saturday as they shoot for their third-straight Regional title.
Johnson scored 22 points against Bixby and 29 points against both Sapulpa and Owasso. Overall she is the number-two scorer on the team with 16.1 points per outing, and has led the team in eight games this season.
She shoots 48.9% on field goals, 55.9% on two-pointers, and 73.4% from the free throw line with 3.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 2.9 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game.
Johnson surpassed the 1,000 career scoring milestone earlier this season and was presented with a commemorative ball. A four-year starter, she scored 212 points as a freshman, 265 as a sophomore, 407 as a junior, and is at 371 points this season with anywhere between two and six games left to play.
In her career Johnson has led her team on 29 occasions with eighteen games of 20+ points and a personal-best 31-point performance in the 2017 season opener.
