CPHS Wrestling: Nine Sandites in contention after first round at State Tournament
/Oklahoma City - Nine qualifiers from the Charles Page High School wrestling team are still in contention after the first round at the OSSAA Class 6A State Championship. One was eliminated Friday morning at Jim Norick Arena.
This year the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association adopted a new round for the tournament, a wrestle-in match pitting the fifth-place wrestler from each region against the fourth-place finisher from the other side of the state. The loser of that match is eliminated. In past years, only the top-four finishers from each region advanced to the State tournament.
Senior Blake Sargent (13-7, 102-32) took on Joseph Reynolds at 126. The Sandite scored a takedown in the first minute, gave up an escape, then started the second period with an escape of his own. He added another takedown for back points and started the final stretch 7-1. Nearfall points with twenty seconds left made for an 11-1 major decision.
138 Junior Scott Patton (27-18, 34-20) went scoreless through the first two periods against Brett Pinkston and made the go-ahead escape with half a second remaining for the 1-0 decision.
170 Junior Dayvon Taylor (20-21) immediately took down Rene Martinez then cut him loose late in the first. Martinez reversed and rode out the second and third periods for a 3-2 decision.
No team points were awarded for the qualifying matches. The first round of brackets will kick off immediately following the wrestle-in round.
