CPHS Basketball: Undefeated Bartlesville tops Sand Springs 53-42, Kersgieter scores 19
/Class 6A No. 2 ranked Bartlesville High School (16-0) took singular control of the Frontier Valley Conference Tuesday night, improving to 7-0 in league play with a 53-42 win over the defending champions from No. 10 Charles Page High School (10-5, 6-1).
Jena’ Williams drew first blood with a three-point basket for the Lady Bruins. Both teams came up short on their next few possessions, then Williams scored again on a putback. Williams gave the Sandites their first score, sending Destiny Johnson to the charity stripe for one, then Avery Allen got on the board with a layup and a free throw to to make it 8-1. Holly Kersgieter got competitive and scored once on a putback and once on a steal to end the period 8-5.
Erin Shoemaker and Trinity Parker kicked off the second quarter for Bartlesville with layups then Shoemaker drilled a three to triple the Sandites before Kersgieter scored a layup and a three of her own.
Williams was next from three-point range, Kersgieter retaliated with a two, then Jacie Taber made her way into the books with a steal. Vivian Culver scored two for the Bruins, but Kimi Presnell made a three-point play to cut it to 20-19 before the half.
Allen and Williams scored back-to-back to start the second period then Isabella Regalado made her way into the scoreboard with a three. Allen scored on a steal, Williams and Shoemaker hit threes, and the Bruins were back in front of a double-digit lead. Things only got worse for the Sandites and by the end of the period they were outscored 21-8.
Trailing 48-35, the Sandites mounted a comeback attempt, scoring seven straight before Shoemaker scored two from the stripe. The Bruins sealed the victory with a Parker steal and Williams three-point play with twenty seconds left.
Williams led all scorers with 26 points, while Kersgieter led the Sandites with nineteen. Shoemaker scored twelve and Allen had eleven for the Bruins, while Regalado added ten for Sand Springs.
The Sandites will return to action Friday with a road game at Muskogee (2-13, 0-7). Bartlesville will travel to No. 13 Bixby (13-3, 6-1).
