Lady Sandites Topple Trojans 50-33 in Playoffs, Play Choctaw Saturday

The No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School girls basketball team (20-7) used a balanced team effort and an explosive second half to take down No. 15 Jenks (15-12) in the first round of the Area consolation playoffs Thursday night in Sapulpa, winning 50-33 in a game they controlled from start to finish.

Sand Springs never once trailed, though the Trojans hung fairly close through the first half, only down 21-17 to start the third and 36-25 entering the fourth.

Back-to-back-to-back three pointers from Taiona Morris, Tianna Butler, and Aaliyah Simone early in the fourth put the game firmly out of reach.

“We made shots,” said head coach Josh Berry. “That third quarter we finally made some shots and made a couple threes, got a couple layups in, so it kind of opened up for them.”

It was the Sandites’ first meeting of the season with their former conference foes and their 20th consecutive victory over the Lady Trojans in a streak dating back to 2013.

The teams traded buckets to a 4-4 tie before a three-pointer from Sakauri Wilson gave Sand Springs the lead for the remainder of the game. Wilson also scored the Sandites’ first two buckets, on putbacks, and had 11 points and 4 rebounds in the first quarter alone.

Sand Springs dominated the boards early on but Jenks boxed out better after the first quarter and the two teams matched up fairly well in that regard.

Sand Springs had the better defense, however, and came away with 11 steals on the night while holding Rice-commit Jill Twiehaus to only 11 points.

“She’s a great talent,” said Berry. “We just wanted to make her work for every single shot that she gets.”

While Wilson was limited offensively in the second half, her teammates stepped up and four different Lady Sandites finished in double digits.

Freshman Tianna Butler had 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks while Hope Bump had 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 steals.

“We have multiple people that can score the basketball so that’s a good thing,” said Berry. “Hopefully they all score the ball come Saturday.”

Morris started the night 0-of-9 on first-half field goals but dialed it in for the second half to score 10 points.

“She’s gotten so much better,” said Berry. “She just keeps getting better and better as the year goes on. I just tell her ‘keep playing hard, focus on that part of it, the ball’s going to find the hole eventually.’ She’s too good for it not to find the hole.”

Sand Springs will return to action Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the Area consolation finals at Sapulpa against No. 3 Choctaw (24-1), who suffered its first loss of the season 34-31 against No. 5 Owasso (21-5) in the championship game.

“Great team, good coach,” said Berry. “It’s gonna be a battle. You go out there and you fight from start to finish. Whatever happens happens.”

Sandites Maul Muskogee 75-59 in Regional Consolation Finals

For the first time since 2021, the Charles Page High School boys basketball team is headed to the Area playoffs after a 75-59 victory over Muskogee Saturday night at the UMAC.

“It feels great after all the things we’ve been through over the past two years,” said junior forward Blake Johnson.

“We’ve had rough years, maybe not the best talent, but this year we’ve had the talent. We know what we can do. We have coach Savage coaching us hard. We knew we’ve just got to buy in and we can get to where we want.”

The path to Area was even tougher this year thanks to a new postseason format. After beating Southmoore 73-52 on Thursday, in years past the Sandites would have already clinched an Area appearance even though they lost 61-55 to Choctaw in the Regional Championship game on Friday. But this year the OSSAA added a Regional consolation bracket, making the road to State even tougher.

“We’re excited,” said head coach Eric Savage. “We thought all along that we could get to this point and we’ve been striving to take that next step. We’re thrilled to still have the opportunity.”

The No. 13 ranked Sandites (17-9) stormed out to a 17-2 lead against the Roughers (10-16) before Muskogee went on a run of its own and cut it to 22-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Muskogee actually won the second quarter, ending the half on an 11-3 run to make it 34-28 at the buzzer.

“They’re a prideful team,” said Savage. “They kept playing hard and jumping into press and getting up in us. We didn’t adjust to it too well, but we kept our composure and were able to settle down.”

Sand Springs went to its bench early, with 10 different players seeing action in the first half.

“We knew we’d have to go to our bench with the way Muskogee plays you,” said Savage. “Any depth that you can have and support offensively or defensively off the bench this time of year is huge.”

The teams traded blows early in the third quarter but the Sandites finally started to pull away down the stretch, closing on a 10-2 run and never again let Muskogee back within 10 points.

“I thought we really controlled the second half for the most part and didn’t get sped up as much as we did there in the second quarter,” said Savage.

Deke Thompson led all scorers with 23 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 5 assists. The junior Jenks transfer has been a big part of this year’s success in both the regular season and postseason, averaging 19.2 points per game.

“He’s an overall leader of the team,” said Savage. “He was good driving the ball, passing off, and breaking the press tonight. He’s just a welcome player that’s heightened our level of play.”

Khalil Allen was also consistent force throughout the game for Sand Springs, shooting 7-of-8 for 14 points, 10 of which came in the second half.

Allen, Johnson, and Evans have formed a three-headed monster in the paint this year and combined for 24 points and 15 rebounds against Muskogee.

“Energy matches energy,” said Allen. “We just go out there and go strong.”

“One thing we’re really good at is we coach each other,” added Johnson. “We see each other, we see our mistakes…we sharpen each other.”

Sand Springs opened the postseason with a win over Southmoore (11-13) behind 15 points from Allen, 14 from Kason Evans, 13 from Thompson, and 11 from Kooper Kelly.

In the next game, however, the Sandites couldn’t quite complete the comeback against Choctaw after falling behind by 14 points in the third quarter. Thompson scored 19 points and Allen added 14 in the loss.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at a time and location to be decided in a rematch with Southmoore. The Sabercats clawed their way to a regional consolation title after winning 88-36 against U.S. Grant and 74-65 against Bixby.

“I’d rather not have to play somebody for the second time in two weeks, but we’re happy to be playing,” said Savage.

Lady Sandites Fall 47-44 at Broken Arrow, Travel to Edmond Saturday

After rallying from an 11-point deficit to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, the Lady Sandites saw their comeback dreams quashed on a late corner three from Peyton Dolan in the Regional Championship game Friday afternoon in Broken Arrow.

Host No. 8 Broken Arrow (18-7) punched its ticket to Area with a 47-44 win over No. 6 Sand Springs (17-8) behind 17 points and 11 rebounds from Nebraska commit McKenzie Mathurin.

The former conference foes from Sand Springs and Broken Arrow met for the first time this season, fresh off dominant wins in the first round of the postseason.

Sakauri Wilson scored the opening bucket off a steal in transition but Macy Marraccini hit back-to-back baskets and the Tigers never trailed again till the middle of the fourth quarter.

After four minutes the game was still tied at 2-2 and Broken Arrow only led 8-5 after the first quarter.

“They did exactly what they wanted to,” said head coach Josh Berry. “They wanted to slow us down so they mix and matched from different zones, different mans, just to try and confuse us.”

Broken Arrow opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run for their first double-digit lead and went up by as much as 11 after a trey from Marraccini at the 4:53 mark.

Sand Springs responded with a late run, including two three-pointers from Taiona Morris and a late bucket from Wilson to make it 24-19 at halftime.

Aaliyah Simone scored off a steal to open the third and Bump drained a three to make it 26-24 but Broken Arrow surged right back to a 33-24 advantage before the Sandites ended on a 4-0 run.

Simone hit a layup early in the fourth after stealing an inbound throw to make it 33-31. ReKiah Bowen broke up the Sandites’ run with a two-point basket, but Simone scored again and Wilson hit a three with 4:05 to play for the Sandites’ first lead since the opening basket.

Mathurin put the Tigers back on top with a pair of free throws, but Bump hit another three to make it 39-37. Mathurin then tied it up from the charity stripe but Tianna Butler also had a pair of free throws for the Sandites’ final lead of the night at 41-39 with 1:46 to play.

After Butler’s free throws, the Tigers outscored the Sandites 8-3. Mathurin and Marracini each made free throws after Dolan’s three, though another three-pointer from Bump cut it as close as 46-44 with five seconds to play.

“It’s going to be a game of runs and they had the last run,” said Berry. “They made a big shot in the corner to get the lead and you know, that’s all you can do is leave it all out there.”

Mathurin hit one last free throw to make it 47-44 and Wilson was fouled on her way downcourt and missed both free throws with a second to play.

The Sandites’ aggressive defense forced 15 turnovers in the game, led by Simone with 3 steals.

“We talk about it all the time and all year long,” said Berry. “As long as we hook up defensively and we don’t take any plays off on that end, we’re going to find a way to get back into the game.”

“Our offense will find a way to put the ball in the hole, but it’s our defense that can’t have any lapses and I think we had about seven or eight plays that we just lapsed on defense and to me, that’s the ball game.”

Bump led the Sandites with 11 points, followed by Morris with 10, all in the first half. Simone scored 9 points and Wilson and Butler had 7 apiece.

“If our defense is there, we’ve got enough people that a play is going to be made,” said Berry. “In every part of the game, somebody made a big play. And that’s the thing, we’ve just got to trust each other on that part.”

Sand Springs will travel to Edmond Memorial in a Regional consolation elimination game against Putnam City (10-14) Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The Sandites previously defeated the Pirates 68-51 and 77-53 in district play.

“They’re a tough team, good coach,” said Berry. “It’s always hard to play somebody three times in a row. Especially after you come off a loss like this, an emotional one, and now you’ve got to go on the road.”

“They’re coming off a win and they’ll be ready to go, so it depends on how we respond.”

Lady Sandites Rout Ponca City in Regional Playoffs, Will Play Broken Arrow Friday

The No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School girls basketball team (18-6) easily handled its first round playoff game against Ponca City (7-17) Tuesday at the Broken Arrow regional tournament, 45-28.

It was the Sandites’ third win in a row, sixth consecutive win against the Wildcats, and marked the fourth year in a row that the Sandites have won a playoff game.

Southwestern Oklahoma State commit Sakauri Wilson led Sand Springs to victory with her first double-double of the season, scoring 11 points with 10 steals.

“It was just a good job by a senior, stepping up on that end of it, but you’ve got to have a total team effort come Friday and be ready to go,” said head coach Josh Berry.

The first half was total domination as the Sandites held Ponca to a single field goal in each of the first two quarters.

Hope Bump took a steal coast to coast on the Wildcats’ first possession for a 2-0 Sandite lead, though Kyra Allison responded with a bucket of her own and briefly gave Ponca its only lead on a free throw soon after.

A three-pointer from Wilson kicked off a 15-0 run before Kaytum Lively broke up the run. Sand Springs closed on an 8-0 streak to make it 25-5 at the buzzer.

“I thought we actually didn’t play that well,” said Berry. “Defense, we did okay. We didn’t play the way and with the energy that we’re used to playing with. I think if we would have played that way it would have been an even bigger first half for us.”

Ponca’s offense came alive in the third quarter as Allison scored 8 points and the Wildcats trimmed their deficit to 36-19, but Sand Springs got the edge in a wild turnover-ridden fourth quarter.

“They did some things to kind of slow us down,” said Berry. “We’ve got to go back and fix some things and we’ve got to be better come Friday because that’s not going to get the job done.”

“They were able to take advantage of us not being locked in and being in the right defensive positions.”

The Sandites had their biggest lead at 41-19 early in the fourth before running the bench.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 3:30 p.m. against host No. 8 Broken Arrow (17-7) who defeated Enid 75-33 in their first round game. The Sandites are in pursuit of their first Regional title since 2022 and eighth overall.

Sandites Qualify 12 Boys, 4 Girls for State Wrestling Tournament

Charles Page High School will be well represented at the OSSAA State Championship Thursday afternoon when 6A action starts.

Both the boys and girls will begin wrestling at 4:30 p.m. in Session II at Jim Norick Arena in the State Fairgrounds at Oklahoma City.

The Sandites qualified 12 boys for State after a strong second place finish at the West Regional in Moore on Saturday. It was their highest Regional placement since 2017 and their most total State qualifiers since at least 1996, if not ever. They also had their first Regional Champion since 2019 in Zander Grigsby.

The girls meanwhile qualified four for State at the East Regional in Glenpool on Tuesday, taking eighth place as a team. Bailey Copeland became the first-ever girls State qualifier from Sand Springs in the Sandites’ second year with a girls program.

The Sandites’ fourth and fifth placers from Regionals will be first to wrestle in the wrestle-in round on Thursday, followed by the quarterfinals at 6:00 p.m. Consolation matches will begin Friday at 5:00 p.m. followed by semifinals at 7:00 p.m. Consolation semifinals will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. followed by 3rd place matches at 1:30 p.m. and finals matches at 6:30 p.m.

Girls Regionals

Copeland (17-4), a freshman, took third place at 100 pounds with three pins. Her only loss was a 2-0 decision to Broken Arrow’s Alina Peralta in the semifinals. In the placement round she earned a 6-1 decision over Ponca City junior Camila Bohon.

Laila Mirza (38-8) took fourth place at 115, going 3-2. She pinned her first foe and won a 5-2 decision over El Reno’s Brooklynn Huggins before falling 15-3 to returning Stillwater State qualifier Abigail Rivero. In consolation she pinned Claremore’s Cambry Suskey a second time but fell 11-4 to Bixby freshman Larra Mullin.

Kelsi Hilton (37-7) placed fourth at 135, pinning her first two opponents before falling to returning State finalist Mak Gregg in the semifinals. She added another pin in consolation before falling to returning State placer Adisyn Ivers from Ponca City. Hilton actually led 2-0 after the first period but was pinned after starting the second on bottom.

Freshman Ambrielle Chambers (22-8) took fifth place at 105 with three pins, falling to Durant senior Addison Polk, a returning State qualifier, in the quarterfinals. In the consolation semis she fell to Ada junior EllaBabe Fisher but bounced back with an 8-4 decision over Muskogee’s Grace Fraser to punch her ticket to State.

The girls finished in eighth place with 83 points, just one point behind Sapulpa and one point ahead of Shawnee. Broken Arrow won the Regional over runner-up Bixby. It was a drastic improvement for the Lady Sandites, who placed 42nd last year with no State qualifiers.

Boys Regionals

Zander Grigsby (38-2) manhandled the 165-pound bracket, outscoring his opponents 36-8 without giving up anything but escape points. He pinned two opponents and had a 24-7 technical fall en route to the finals, where he earned a 6-1 decision over top-seeded Brayden Lucas, a returning State placer from Edmond North

Freshman Jaxon Grigsby (18-9) placed second at 126, dominating Gavin Horn 12-1 before eking out a 3-2 overtime tie-breaker against two-seed Barrett Byers of Piedmont. In the finals he lost 3-0 to returning State finalist Christian Belford of Edmond North.

Mason Harris (34-3) was runner-up at heavyweight, winning his first three matches by fall. In the finals he lost a 1-0 decision to defending State Champion Ricky Thomas of Edmond North.

Matthew Moore (26-13) placed third at 132 with three pins, only losing a close 4-3 decision to top-seeded Hudson Hackbarth of Edmond North. In the consolation finals he pinned Deer Creek’s Parker DeGraffenreid in 5:36.

Jaxon Trotter (39-8) placed third at 175 with a 3-1 sudden victory overtime takedown against two-seeded Alex Wilson of Yukon, a returning State placer. He teched his first opponent in 4:31 before falling 3-2 to Westmoore State placer Cole Olguin. In consolation he pinned his next two opponents before decisioning Putnam North’s Ryan Gooch 3-1 in the semifinals.

David Ritchey (20-9) placed fourth at 120, pinning his first opponent and winning a 5-1 decision in the quarterfinals before falling 9-0 to two-time State Champion Cash Donnell from Piedmont. In consolation he pinned Southmoore’s Noah Reynolds before falling 7-0 to Yukon’s Hayden Wright.

Preston Reyna (26-11) finished fourth at 150, pinning his first foe before falling to Piedmont’s Jayden Fuston. In consolation he won a major decision, a pin, and a 9-5 upset of four-seed Axton Wright from Moore before falling once again to Fuston in the placement match.

Dawsen Briscoe (23-13) took fifth place at 106, winning his first match by 5-1 decision against Yukon’s Caleb Schneider, who also finished a State qualifier, before falling to top-seeded Jake Goodin from Edmond North. In consolation he fell 6-1 to third-placer Blake Thomas of Piedmont before earning a 6-5 decision over Putnam North’s Jaaziel Benman.

Jayden Pait (17-5) placed fifth at 138, losing his first match 3-1 to Westmoore’s Gannon Morales before winning his next two matches by fall. In the consolation semis he fell 8-4 to Yukon’s Dillon Ryan but he won his placement match by 9-1 major decision against Piedmont’s Ethan Applebee.

Jesse Moore (28-10) placed fifth at 144, losing his first match 3-2 to Moore’s Seth Shouse. In consolation he pinned one foe and teched another in just 3:10 before taking a 6-3 loss against Piedmont’s Kolton Mullings. In the placement round he got a rematch with Shouse and this time won 5-2.

Brody Ensten (30-15) placed fifth at 157, bouncing back from an opening 7-5 loss to Westmoore’s Sam Gibson with three dominant wins. He pinned his next two foes and earned a 16-1 technical fall before falling 11-2 to two-seeded Barrett Weathers of Deer Creek. In the placement round he won a 2-1 rematch with Gibson, scoring an escape in overtime.

Peyton Callis (36-13) placed fifth at 190, winning his first match by decision before falling 4-3 to Yukon’s Ryan Martindale. In consolation he received a medical forfeit then pinned his next opponent before falling to Piedmont’s Jackson Blackburn. In the placement round he won a 9-2 decision over Norman’s Lance Eubanks.
