CPHS Football Preview: Sandites travel to Putnam City West Friday

The Class 6A-II No. 7 ranked Charles Page High School football team (5-4, 3-3) will wrap up the regular season Friday night in Oklahoma City with a district game at No. 16 Putnam City West (0-7, 0-4).

The Sandites will be making their first-ever appearance at Patriot Stadium, which first opened in 2019. Up until last year, the Patriots have shared a stadium with Putnam City and Putnam City North. The new $8 million, 3,500-capacity facility is located at 8500 Northwest 23rd Street.

The two teams have only met twice, and Sand Springs owns the series 2-0. They won the first-ever meeting 29-24 in 2016 at home, then won 28-14 on the road in 2017.

Sand Springs is coming off a 21-14 win over Bartlesville, and is one victory away from its first winning season since 2016. They already have as many wins this year as they did in the past two years combined. Putnam West has suffered 23-straight losses and has only won two games in four seasons.

Bobby Klinck is in his first season with the Sandites, and owns a 18-16 record as a head coach. Craig Maynard is in his second year with the Patriots and is 5-29 in his career.

Sand Springs is currently ranked fourth in the district, and Putnam West is eighth. The Sandites have the 9th ranked offense and 11th ranked defense in Class 6A-II. The Patriots have the No. 16 offense and No. 14 defense.

The Sandites

Junior quarterback Ty Pennington is 100 of 202 passing this season for 1650 yards and ten touchdowns with only three interceptions. In his career he is 215-433-3085-6 with 23 scores. He has emerged as a running threat this season with 139 carries for 494 yards and 11 touchdowns, including a career-best 147-yard performance against Bartlesville.

Keaton Campbell is 41-546 receiving with six touchdowns this season, and is 86-1239 in his career with nine scores. He also averages 7.1 yards per punt return and 13 yards per kick return.

Jamon Sisco is 22-459 receiving with three touchdowns this season, and is 37-697 with seven scores in his career. He is also 33-106 rushing this season and averages 22.7 yards per kick return with one touchdown. He has also blocked three kicks.

Jacob Blevins is 19-456 receiving with one score. Ryan Shoemaker is 13-158 receiving. Blake Jones is 81-377 rushing for five touchdowns.

Zach Heinen is 19-of-19 on PATs and 2-of-3 on field goals with a long of 36. He also averages 33.2 yards per punt. Greg Reed is averaging 48 yards per kickoff.

Sango Whitehorn has 76 tackles, 18 for loss, six sacks, and two blocked kicks. Landon Hendricks has 74 tackles, 17.5 for loss, five sacks, five fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles.

Drake Fain has 67 tackles, 6.5 for loss, one sack, an interception, a fumble recovery, and a forced fumble. Brooks Dudley has 67 tackles, 19 for loss, 1.5 sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble.

Brycen Peterman has five fumble recoveries, two interceptions, and a forced fumble. Micah Calico, Bryson Chase, Daren Hawkins, Dominic Ornelas, and Dylan Sallas have all made takeaways.

CPHS Football: Pennington has career night in 21-14 win over Bartlesville

The Class 6A-II No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (5-4, 3-3) snapped a three-game district losing streak with a big 21-14 Senior Night win over No. 11 Bartlesville (3-6, 2-4) Friday at Memorial Stadium, securing their position at No. 4 in the district.

The game was a battle of dual threat quarterbacks, and both signal callers led their teams in rushing yardage. Bruin senior Paxton Bradford was 9-of-25 for 201 yards passing with one touchdown and one interception, and also had a team-high 60 yards on six carries.

6’3” junior Ty Pennington, the second-year Sandite starter, had a career night with 22 carries for 142 yards and two scores. It was his first time passing the century mark on the ground. He also aired it out with 12 completions on 20 attempts for 180 yards to four different receivers. The game pushed him over the 3,000 career passing mark.

The Bruins scored on their opening possession, marching 65 yards on seven plays, capped by a six-yard touchdown run from Braeden Winters. Dylan McCoy kicked the PAT and the visitors had an early lead.

A Sandite block in the back on the kick return, followed by a pair of false starts, pinned the home team in with a series of plays from the one-yard line, and ultimately gave the visitors great field position at the Sandite 41 on their next drive.

Bartlesville wouldn’t capitalize on it, however, as Landon Hendricks made his sixth fumble recovery of the year on a third-and-one play at the 16-yard line. That turnover set up a six-play 81-yard march that saw Pennington completions of 14, 41, and seven yards before running it in from the four. Zach Heinen’s PAT tied it up, and the Sandites never trailed again.

Pennington ultimately completed six straight passes over two drives, and made run plays of 19, 21, and a 15-yard scamper for the go-ahead score. Bartlesville tried a fourth down pass attempt as the half entered its final minute, but Bryson Chase snagged his first pick of the year.

Both teams had touchdowns called back for holding in the second quarter. Bradford found Caden Davis for a 97-yard would-be score with 5:54 left in the half. Then Sisco made a wild catch after juggling it several times, and made his way downfield for a wish-it-were 62-yarder with two minutes to play. Both drives ultimately ended in punts.

Blake Jones padded the Sandites’ lead with a six-yard run up the middle on the opening drive of the second half. The junior running back ended the evening with eight touches for 43 yards.

Bartlesville threatened with a 13-play 59-yard march that ended at the 1-yard line. Winters converted a fourth-down run earlier in the drive, but his next fourth-down attempt was stopped short in a goal-line stand to end the third quarter 21-7.

The Bruins found themselves fourth-and-goal once again in the fourth quarter, and this time they were successful with a seven-yard pass from Bradford to McCoy. McCoy’s kick would be the final point of the game.

Sand Springs ate up the final 5:41, picking up four first downs, all on the ground, before assuming victory formation at the Bruin 30.

Even with his near-97-yarder called back, Davis still managed to lead all receivers with four catches for 123 yards. Jacob Blevins was the top Sandite with three catches for 87 yards, and Keaton Campbell had seven catches for 77 yards. Sophomore Brody Rutledge made a 14-yard first-down catch on his first-ever varsity target.

Up next for the Sandites is a district road trip to Warr Acres on Friday against No. 16 Putnam City West (0-7, 0-4). Bartlesville will travel to No. 5 Choctaw (6-3, 5-1) Friday at 7:00 p.m.

CPHS Cross Country: Boys place 11th, Girls 15th at East Regional

The Charles Page High School Cross Country program wrapped up its season Saturday, October 24th, with a home meet, hosting 31 schools at Case Community Park for the 5A and 6A East Regionals. The girls placed 15th and the boys took 11th place. Neither team advanced anyone to the State Championship.

Sam English led the Sandites with a 5K time of 18:26.4 for 60th place out of 103 runners. Jazmin Lopez was the top Lady Sandite with a time of 22:42.13 for 50th place out of 102 runners.

Both teams are primed for success next season. Caleb James will be the only Sandite graduating from either team. The boys will return a loaded squad of upperclassmen that will include six seniors. The girls won’t graduate anyone this year, and will be led by Lopez as next year’s lone senior.

CPHS Football Preview: Sandites host Bartlesville Friday in last home game

The last time Sand Springs beat Bartlesville was in 2017 behind a school-record 507-yard rushing performance from Gatorade Player of the Year Payton Scott.

The Class 6A-II No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (4-4, 2-3) will host No. 11 Bartlesville (3-5, 2-3) Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in their last regular season home game. Prior to the game, the Church That Matters Tailgate Crew will be grilling up burgers, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches outside the stadium as a fundraiser for Sandite Cross Country and Track and Field.

Per a new OSSAA ruling due to the number of district contests that have been canceled this season, the game won’t actually help or prevent either team from making the playoffs. If they want to play in the postseason, they get to regardless of record. But it will be crucial in playoff seeding as both teams try to give themselves the most favorable match-up possible when Week 11 rolls around.

Sand Springs currently ranks No. 4 in District 2 and Bartlesville is ranked No. 6. Both teams are 2-3, but Sand Springs’s losses all came to the top three teams in the district. Bartlesville has yet to play No. 2 seed Choctaw, and they suffered a 10-7 loss to No. 5 Ponca City, who Sand Springs beat 35-10. The Sandites also beat Sapulpa 21-17, and Bartlesville lost 48-21 to the Chieftains in non-district play.

The Sandites

Junior quarterback Ty Pennington is 88-of-183 passing this season for 1465 yards and ten touchdowns with only three interceptions. He is 203-414-2900-6 in his career with 23 passing touchdowns. He emerged as a running threat this season with 119 carries for 347 yards and nine more scores.

Junior running back Blake Jones has 73 carries for 338 yards and four touchdowns this season, and is 183-724 with five scores in his career.

Keaton Campbell has 34 catches for 469 yards and six touchdowns this season, and is 79-1162 with nine scores in his career. He also averages 7.4 yards per punt return and 12.5 yards per kick return. Jacob Blevins is 16-364 receiving this season with one score. Ryan Shoemaker is 13-158.

Jamon Sisco has 21 catches for 457 yards and three touchdowns, and also has 30 carries for 106 yards. He averages 22.7 yards per kick return, including a 93-yard score, and he has blocked three kicks. He has 36 catches for 695 yards and seven touchdowns in his career.

Zach Heinen is 16-of-16 on PATs this season and 35-of-36 in his career. He is 2-of-3 on field goals with a long of 28, and his only miss was from over 40 yards. Backup kicker Jonathan Daniels is 3-of-4 on PATs and 2-of-2 on field goals with a long of 26.

Sango Whitehorn has 70 tackles, 16 for loss, six sacks, and two blocked kicks. Landon Hendricks has 70 tackles, 16.5 for loss, four sacks, five fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble. Drake Fain has 67 tackles, 6.5 for loss, one sack, an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Brooks Dudley has 59 tackles, 11 for loss, 1.5 sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble. Lane Webster has 32 tackles, 14 for loss, and two sacks. Brycen Peterman has been in on seven turnovers this year, forcing one fumble, recovering four, and making two interceptions.

The Sandites are averaging 294 yards per game against top-notch defenses, including three teams that are ranked No. 1 in their classifications. Their offense ranks ninth in Class 6A-II and their defense ranks 11th in points allowed.

The Bruins

Dual-threat senior quarterback Paxton Bradford is 52-119-720-8 passing this season with seven touchdowns and is 90-508 on the ground with four more scores.

Gage Keaton has 24 catches for 353 yards and four touchdowns. Caden Davis has two scores, and Braedon Winters has one.

The team has a large pool of capable rushers. Winters has four touchdowns, Caleb Perry and Davis have two apiece, and Colton Sutton has one.

Dylan McCoy is the top running back with 127 carries for 839 yards and five touchdowns. He is also perfect kicking this season with 26 PATs and four field goals, with a long of 33.

The defense ranks 13th in points allowed, but is third in defensive scoring, with two safeties, two fumble recoveries for touchdowns, and one pick six. Their offense ranks ninth, tied with Sand Springs.

The Series

Bartlesville schools lead the Sandites 40-25 all-time. The current high school, which unified two older schools under one program, leads the Sandites 20-15 since they first met in 1982. The two programs have met annually since 2000, and the schools are tied 10-10 in the 21st Century. The Sandites are 6-4 when hosting the Bruins in the past 20 years.

Last year the Bruins were 0-5 rolling into their game against a 2-3 Sandite program. Bartlesville picked up a 54-34 win and went on to finish the season 3-7 while the Sandites ended 2-8. Sand Springs led 14-13 after one quarter, but Bartlesville won the second quarter 21-0 and the teams tied in the second half.

Pennington passed for then-career-high yardage of 296 and scored his first-ever rushing touchdown in that game. Keaton Campbell had six catches for a career-best 139 yards, and Daren Hawkins made an 83-yard pick six.

Bartlesville also won the 2018 meeting, surging back from a 20-7 deficit to a 29-27 win to spoil the Sandite Homecoming. In 2017 the Sandites pummeled Bartlesville 55-13 behind a school-record 507-yard rushing performance from Payton Scott, who scored seven touchdowns in the game.
