CPHS Baseball: Sandites win five-straight, Spring Break tournament canceled due to COVID-19

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (6-2) is riding a five-game win streak after going 2-0 at the Owasso Festival this week, but they will have to wait more than a week to continue the season. They were initially scheduled to take an annual Spring Break trip, but the Tate Aggie Classic in Cantonment, Florida has been canceled due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

On Thursday the Sandites rolled to an 8-2 win against Chickasha (2-6) and on Friday they earned a 2-1 win against previously undefeated Berryhill (5-1). The team is off to a great start in its first season under Head Coach Matt Brown.

Sand Springs held the Fighting Chicks scoreless for six innings and used an explosive six-run fourth inning to take an 8-0 lead before giving up two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Brock Swanson (1-1) picked up his first career win on the mound, throwing three hits, three walks, and three strikeouts in the first six innings.

The game was scoreless till the fourth when Kaden Young stole home. A single from Keaton Campbell and two walks loaded the bases and Gabe Glenn brought in Campbell and Hayden Blair on a single. Brycen Peterman scored Jabe Schlehuber on a single, Glenn stole home, and Kaegan Murray hit an RBI single to score Peterman for the 6-0 lead.

Peterman reached on an error in the sixth and scored on a sacrifice fly from Ethan Sartin, then Brooks Dudley hit a solo home run in the seventh.

Jasper Adams (1-0) took over pitching in the bottom of the seven and tossed four walks, one strikeout, and a single for Chickasha’s only runs of the game. Young (0-0) took over for the final at-bat and recorded a strikeout to end the game.

The Sandites out-hit their foes 8 to 4 and recorded their second error-less game of the year.

On Friday the Sandites had to come from behind with a 2RBI triple from Cason Savage in the top of the sixth. Savage made his season debut after the State Basketball Tournament was postponed due to COVID-19. He is a starter on the Regional Champion team that was supposed to make its second State Tournament appearance in the past three years this weekend.

An error, a single, and a walk allowed the Chiefs to load the bases in the bottom of the second inning, and Colton Voss scored Berryhill’s lone run on a sacrifice run from Caden Green.

Sartin and Jacob Shields hit singles in the top of the sixth and Savage’s triple gave the Sandites the edge against a returning State Tournament team.

Sebastian Cassidy (1-1, 5-4) got the win on the mound with three hits, three strikeouts, and three walks in five innings. Peterman (0-0, 1-1) recorded a save with one hit, one strikeout, and one walk in two innings.

Sand Springs out-hit the Chiefs 5 to 4 but committed three errors and had 13 strikeouts.

Sandite Baseball (3-1 district) won’t return to action till March 23rd with a district road game at Bartlesville (2-5, 1-3). Berryhill will also play a district road game on the 23rd at Cushing (5-2, 3-1).
