CPHS Basketball: Sandites fall 45-41 to No. 2 Norman North at Moore Tournament

Class 6A No. 2 ranked Norman North (15-1) managed to edge out No. 5 Charles Page High School (13-3) in the semifinal round of the John Nobles Invitational at Moore High School Friday afternoon, snapping a ten-game winning streak from the Sandites.

The Timberwolves held close leads after the first and second quarters but were dominated 12-4 in the third before clawing their way back to the front early in the fourth. Harding University-committed senior Jacie Evans scored the first eight points of the quarter to stymie the Sandite tide and lead her team to a 45-41 victory.

Jacie Evans and University of Kansas-committed Sandite Holly Kersgieter led all scorers with nineteen points apiece, and Kersgieter had twelve rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Jessika Evans was second for the Timberwolves with thirteen points and Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson added fifteen for Sand Springs.

It was a back and forth affair right out of the gate and neither team scored back to back field goals till Emma Base and Jacie Evans combined for a 12-7 advantage. Kersgieter quickly responded with a layup and two free throws for an eleven-point first period. Base knocked down two more from the stripe but Johnson laid up to keep it a one-point game, 14-13, at the end of the period.

Mikah Hampton scored in the paint to tie it up at 20-20 midway through the second. Jacie and Jessika Evans gave their team a  four point lead, then Kayton Kite hit a layup on a steal to take a 28-26 advantage into the locker room.

Both teams had trouble scoring early in the third, but Kennedy Cummings put the Timberwolves up by eight to start the half. Sand Springs battled back with a pair of free throws from Johnson and a three point play from Kersgieter. Isabella Regalado hit a long two and a free throw to tie it, and Johnson scored in transition for their first lead since the opening field goal of the game. Jacie Evans broke up the ten-point run, but Johnson hit two more from the stripe for a 34-32 lead.

Jacie Evans put her team back out front with a pair of free throws and a pair of layups to start the fourth, and Kite scored on a steal for a six-point advantage. Darrian Jordan broke up the run and Johnson hit a free throw to make it a one-score game.

The Timberwolves took a three-point lead into the final minute. Johnson scored again to make it 40-39, but Kite made a three point play that put the game out of reach. Johnson laid up again, Jacie Evans hit two from the stripe, and Norman North secured the 45-41 victory.

The Sandites have only lost three games this season, all non-conference. Their last defeat was also in the semifinal round of a tournament, when they fell 57-43 to still undefeated No. 3 Shawnee (14-0). Shawnee and Norman North were set to meet in the Bishop Kelley Invitational finals, but didn’t play the championship game due to winter weather.

Sand Springs will return to action Saturday at 4:00 p.m. when they play for third place against the loser of No. 8 Moore (12-3) vs. No. 11 Choctaw (12-3). Norman North will play the winner of Moore/Choctaw at 7:00 p.m.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites top No. 7 Jenks 31-27 on Homecoming, Patton beats State Champion

Jenks hasn’t beaten Sand Springs in wrestling since 1997, but they put up a valiant effort Thursday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House. Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School (13-4) deal No. 7 Jenks (7-1) their first dual loss of the season, 31-27, and every match mattered.

At first it looked like Sand Springs was going to roll over the Trojans, taking a 22-0 lead right out of the gate. The visitors did their best to spoil Homecoming, however, winning six of the remaining eight matches and it came down to heavyweight for the dual to be decided.

Christian Forbes kicked the dual off with a 16-5 major decision against Sian Suan, Brendon Wiseley received a crucial forfeit at 113, and Riley Weir topped Garrett Johnson 16-7. Seth Jones recorded the only technical fall of the night, 15-0 against Jonathan Kelvington with ten nearfall points, and Blake Jones topped Garrett Weis 6-4 in sudden-victory overtime before the Trojans ever got on the board.

State Qualifier Branden Elrod pinned Caleb Phillips in 1:13 and Enrie Chavez won a 15-13 sudden victory decision against Preston Medlin.

The biggest match of the night was at 152 where Scott Patton won a 6-2 decision over defending State Champion Drake Vannoy. Patton got the lone takedown in the first period and the wrestlers went scoreless through the second. Patton notched two reversals in the third and gave up one reverse.

State Qualifier Killian McGrew pinned Chris Kirby at 160, Warren Stanley pinned Braden Dahl, and Noah Hernandez won a 5-3 sudden victory decision over Riley Magee to cut the Trojan deficit to 25-24.

Kaden Glass went the distance against Ethan Felts for a 4-2 decision, but Brooks Dudley suffered a 7-0 defeat at the hands of State Qualifier Jared Galli, and it all came down to Josh Fincannon. Fincannon only led 1-0 to start the third period against John Roberts, but picked up three nearfall points for the 4-2 decision.

Sand Springs Wrestling will return to action February 5th at Bixby (3-4) in their final dual of the regular season.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites survive Sabercats 55-46 at Moore Tournament, Kersgieter scores 26

The Sandites struggled throughout their Thursday evening game in Moore, but pulled away late in the fourth quarter for their tenth-straight win. The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School girls basketball team (13-2) prevailed 55-46 over unranked Southmoore (5-11) in the first round of the John Nobles Invitational at the Douglas H. Frederick Sports  Complex.

University of Kansas-committed senior Holly Kersgieter lifted her team over the Sabercats with a 26-point performance and was the only Sandite in double-digits. Madison Crandall led Southmoore with sixteen and Erin Bean contributed twelve.

Destiny Johnson laid up on the opening tipoff and Kersgieter scored twice in the paint for a 6-0 lead before Bean got the Sabercats on the board. Both teams had trouble scoring in the opening period and went a combined 7-of-24 on field goals. Reagan Padilla and Morgan Ashton exchanged twos to close the quarter with a narrow 8-6 Sandite advantage.

The Sabercats took their first lead of the game on the opening play of the second quarter with a three-pointer from Torie Simon. Kersgieter responded with five and Johnson added two for a 15-9 lead. Isabella Regalado and Madison Burris also made their way into the scorebook, but Southmoore ran away with a nine-point streak to reclaim the lead at 23-19. A frustrated coach Tobey Nightingale benched four out of five starters for the remainder of the hal. Padilla and Jade Shrum rattled off a trio of free throws to close the half 23-22.

Kersgieter started the second half hot, scoring twice in transition, once on a steal and once on a rebound, before Bean got the Cats on the board. Kersgieter totaled eleven points in the quarter and Padilla hit a late three for a 42-35 lead to start the fourth.

Once again the Sabercats clawed their way back into the game and trailed by only a single point twice in the final stanza. The Sandites finally put the game away in the last minute with three steals, three trips to the free throw line, and a three-pointer from Regalado, riding an eight-point streak to the win.

The game marked the twelfth time this season that Kersgieter has led the team in scoring, and the 37th time in her career. It was also her seventh career game of 25+ points. Sophomore Darrian Jordan got her third career start, filling in for Jacie Taber who is out with injury. Jordan didn’t score any points, but collected five board for the Sandites. Padilla had her best performance since the season-opener with nine points.

The Sandites will return to action Friday at 4:00 p.m. against No. 2 Norman North (14-1), who defeated Durant in the quarterfinals. The Timberwolves boast the third-best defensive record in Class 6A, but are only sixteenth offensively, winning by an average score of 54-40. Sand Springs is the exact opposite with the third-best offensive record, and are sixteenth defensively with an average score of 63-49.

CPHS Boys Basketball: Mid-Season Review with Stats

The Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team is 13-4 overall this season and second in conference standings at 7-2. With five games left in the regular season, they still have plenty of time to claw their way back to to the top.

Sand Springs started the season with five straight wins, went 2-1 at the Memorial Invitational, and placed second at the Duncan Holiday Classic. They were undefeated in conference play till last week when they dropped close games to Union and Owasso.

The Sandites hold the No. 8 ranked offense and No. 10 defense in Class 6A. They will return to action February 1st at Broken Arrow (5-8, 2-6).

CPHS Girls Basketball: Mid-Season Review and Stats

The Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team is 12-2 on the season and undefeated in conference play at 9-0. After starting the season ranked first in Class 6A and suffering a pair of early losses, they have been steadily climbing their way back up ever since.

The team has won nine-straight games, six against ranked opponents, and is back up to No. 5 in the latest rankings after a 46-39 victory over No. 7 Union last week. They hold the No. 2 offense and No. 16 defense in Class 6A, winning by an average score of 64-47.

The Sandites will return to action Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the John Nobles Tournament in Moore. They placed third in their first tournament of the year.

CPHS Basketball: John Nobles Tournament Preview

The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team is headed to the three-day John Nobles Tournament in Moore, Oklahoma this Thursday and is one of five ranked teams at the event. Four of those teams are top-ten, and No. 2 Norman North (13-1) is the favorite to win.

The Sandites are 12-2 overall, riding a nine-game wining streak, and haven’t lost since early December against No. 3 undefeated Shawnee. Most recently they won 74-56 over No. 19 Jenks (7-6). They have the second-highest scoring offense in Class 6A and the sixteenth-ranked defense, winning by an average margin of 15.1 points. Their average game is a 64-48 victory.

At their first tournament of the year Sand Springs placed third, falling to Shawnee in the Bishop Kelley Invitational semifinals and defeating No. 19 Jenks in overtime. They are led by first-year Head Coach Tobey Nightingale.

On Thursday the Sandites will play Southmoore at 7:00 p.m. The Sabercats are 5-9 with an offense ranked 27th in 6A and a defense ranked 21st. They placed third at the Bartlesville Invitational and are coming off a 52-41 win over Stillwater (4-11). Their average game is a 50-42 loss.

On Friday Sand Springs will play either Norman North or Durant (1-13). Durant is riding a seven-game losing streak and their only win was 58-39 over Nathan Hale (5-6). The Lions average 36 points and give up 60.

Norman North has battled through a loaded schedule recently, falling 50-48 to No. 6 Edmond North (11-4) and needing overtime in back-to-back games to beat No. 4 Edmond Memorial (11-4) and No. 8 Moore (11-3). Most recently they won convincingly 60-39 over No. 11 Mustang (14-2).

The Timberwolves hold the sixteenth-best offense and third-best defense in 6A, winning by an average score of 54-40. They won the Enid Holiday Classic last month and made it to the finals of the Bishop Kelley Invitational, but didn’t play the final game due to severe weather.

On the other side of the bracket is Moore vs. Douglass (9-6) and No. 12 Choctaw (11-3) vs. 3A No. 10 Millwood (13-2).

Moore rebounded from their 55-54 overtime loss to Norman North with a 51-41 upset of Edmond Memorial. They have the No. 7 offense and No. 6 defense in 6A, winning by an average score of 61-43, and won the Byng Tournament. Douglass is on a three-game winning streak but they haven’t upset a single ranked opponent this season. They win by an average score of 48-43, but already dropped a game 68-38 to Moore earlier this month. They placed fourth at both Ardmore and Byng.

Choctaw made it to the finals of the Harrah Tournament and won the Lady Jag Classic 53-37 over Midwest City. They then fell 67-60 to Midwest City in their very next game, and have won their last two over unranked opponents. The Yellowjackets hold the No. 5 offense and No. 7 defense in 6A, winning by an average score of 62-43.

Millwood placed fifth at the Hays City Shootout and second at the Christian Heritage Tournament. They are riding a seven-game win streak and win by an average score of 57-36.

The tournament will be held at Moore High School at 300 North Eastern Avenue, Moore, OK 73160. The gym is located on the south side of the school campus, facing south.
