CPHS Basketball: Davon Richardson scores 44 in 97-77 loss at No. 8 Owasso

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School boys' basketball team (14-6, 7-5) was soundly defeated 97-77 in an unusually high-scoring affair at No. 8 Owasso (17-4, 9-3) Friday night, despite an incredible 44-point performance by 6'4" sophomore Davon Richardson.

The game kicked off like a replay of their last game as the Sandites jumped out to a quick lead with back-to-back layups from Richardson. Hayden Peterson got the Rams on the board with a free throw, but Matt Price made a three-point play for the 7-1 lead. Jake Thompson hit a pair from the charity stripe and Josh Proctor made the first Owasso field goal, Richardson retaliated, then Thompson hit a three to make it a one-point game.

Seth Pomeroy gave his team the lead once and for all with a steal and a layup. Proctor snagged four more off back-to-back steals and the Rams successfully flipped the script. Richardson hit two from the stripe, but Proctor made one of his own, then blocked a shot from Price and Thompson scored on the rebound.

The Rams rode an eight-point streak to a double-digit lead before Colt Savage scored back-to-back. Peterson got the final say of the first quarter, hitting a buzzer-beater for the 24-16 advantage.

Cole Durkee made a three-point play to kick off the second period, but Pomeroy hit a two and Thompson sank a three for another double-digit lead. The Rams ran away with it from there with five three-pointers for a 55-33 halftime advantage. Richardson and Thompson had eighteen points apiece in the first half alone.

Proctor hit a three to give his team a 25-point lead to start the third, Richardson scored a three of his own, Peterson added two, then the Sandites went on a five-point run to cut it back to nineteen. The game stayed in that vicinity for most of the quarter till Thompson iced a buzzer beater to make it 77-53.

Richardson continued his melee in the fourth quarter with three threes and a two in the first three minutes, cutting the deficit to seventeen points for the first time since the second period. Owasso had a quick answer in Preston Hendrix who came off the bench for back-to-back threes. Richardson hit yet another three and followed it up with a free throw for his final point of the night.

No matter how hot the Sandites got, the Rams always had an answer. With three minutes left the Sandite called it a night and sent in the backups, who actually cut the deficit to seventeen with a 9-2 run before the Rams hit the final two baskets of the night.

Richardson's 44 points were the most any Sandite has scored in several seasons, and a massive improvement on his previous career-high 24. He also collected eight rebounds and two blocks. Colt Savage was the only other Sandite in double digits, scoring twelve. Thompson paced the Rams with 29, followed by Proctor with eighteen, Peterson with seventeen, and Pomeroy with twelve.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 8:00 in their last home game of the season against Jenks (8-13, 3-9) who they previously defeated 64-45 in January. Owasso will aim to repeat a 67-65 victory over No. 13 Sapulpa (13-8, 5-7) Tuesday at home.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites win 21st-straight dual 50-20 over No. 11 Owasso

In a stunning upset, Owasso's Zeke Washington defeated defending State Champion Riley Weir 11-5. (Photo: Scott Emigh).

It wasn't the kind of beatdown the Sandites have been scoring for the past two seasons, but the fourth-ranked defending State Champions pushed their win streak to 21 with a season-opening victory over No. 11 Owasso (0-2). The Sandites won eight matches, Owasso won four, and each team forfeited one.

Freshman Carter Young (1-0) got off to a quick start against Leyton Warne, scoring five takedowns and two nearfalls for a 14-4 lead first period lead. He won by 22-5 technical fall at the 2:45 mark with six-straight near-fall points.

Brendon Wiseley (1-0 season, 2-0 career) easily overpowered Killian McNichol with a first period takedown and maintained control till the buzzer, then added an escape and takedown early in the second period for a 5-0 lead. He spent most of the second and third period working on a cradle before sticking his foe with 20 second left for an 11-0 team lead.

Defending State Champion Riley Weir (0-1, 62-19) saw his 27-straight win streak come to an end at the hands of Zeke Washington at 120 pounds. Weir scored the first takedown, Washington reversed, Weir escaped, then Washington got his first takedown. Weir tied it up with a backwards summersault and they entered the second period 4-4. Weir scored an escape halfway through the second period but Washington took him back down with twenty seconds left for a 6-5 lead. The Ram added another reversal early in the third, working Weir over for a trio of back points and an 11-5 decision.

Blake Sargent (1-0, 90-25) took a full minute before taking down Tristan Herrera, but he only needed fourteen more seconds before pinning him at 1:14.

Irwin Portillo (1-0, 7-5) scored first on Mark Turner but the Ram was quick to escape and the two were at a stalemate for most of the first period. Turner scored an escape in the second period to tie it and cut Portillo loose in the third to look for more points, but instead it was the Sandite with the takedown for the 5-3 decision.

Scott Patton (0-1, 7-3) took on Baylor Smith at 138 and gave up takedowns in the first and second periods. Smith added back points with seconds to spare and led 7-0 to start the final stretch. The Ram ultimately prevailed by 11-3 major decision to cut the deficit to 20-6.

Colbie Heckencamp (1-0) put the Sandites back on track, making his varsity debut with a pin of Bailey Vann in 1:15.

Chris Kirby (1-0) battled Nolan Miller at 152 and trailed 2-1 to start the second after nearly scoring a takedown half a second behind the first buzzer. He carried that momentum into the second period and pinned the Ram in 2:27 to push the lead to 32-7.

Defending State Champion Payton Scott (1-0, 62-11) continued the pin streak, sticking Caleb Davis in 1:07 to clinch the victory.

Noah Almy (0-1, 24-21) nearly had Nate Jacobson pinned early in the first period, but settled for a trio of near fall points before cutting the Ram loose. Jacobson took two of those points back and trailed 5-3 to start the second period. Two more takedowns and Owasso flipped the script for an 8-5 advantage to start the third period and ultimately prevailed 12-5.

Dayvonne Taylor (0-1) had his work cut out for him against J.D. Johnson, but after being taken down twice, he reversed on the Ram and trailed only 5-4 to start the second. The Ram went to work from there, expanding his advantage to 13-6 by the second buzzer. Johnson won the match with a 19-9 major decision.

The Sandites forfeited 195 to J.D. Johnson, Owasso forfeited 285 to Ethan Hooper (1-0), and Gage Fain (1-0, 40-38) had the last match of the night with a pin of Devin Harris in 1:01.

The Sandites will defend their title at the Perry Tournament of Champions this weekend and won't dual again till they host No. 12 Stillwater (0-2) on the 19th. Owasso will also travel to Perry and will host 5A No. 9 Skiatook (1-0) on the 12th.

Sandite Baseball wins 2nd Annual Monster Ball 8-7 over Sandite Softball

The Charles Page High School baseball and softball teams came together Thursday evening at the Sandite Sports Complex for a friendly game of slow pitch to raise money for Sandite Special Olympics. The teams played in full costume, causing lots of errors and lots of entertainment.

Officer Riley Rutledge got the first hit for the boys and took second on a ground out from the Hulk. Cal Watkins, professional skater, hit a single and a poop emoji hit a 2RBI triple for the lead. The poop scored on a banana single and the inning came to a close as Minnie Mouse put out Guy Fawkes at first.

Adrian Sarasua reached second on an error and made third on a ground out from Felicity Horn in the third inning. An error from the third base lumberjack gave the girls their first run of the evening and Coach Brooke Smart sneaked into the batting order for a game-tying homer over the centerfield fence. A throwing error from the short stop gave the Ladies the one-run lead.

The Sandites brought out the major leagues in former Minnesota Twin Scott Watkins for a home run, followed by yet another homer from a small baby. The softballers made an error on what should have been an easy tag on a slow T-Rex, allowing a sumo wrestler to take the 6-4 lead.

Madison "Bambi" Lee got the girls back on the scoreboard. Aliyah "Netflix" Taff had no chill, reaching first on a fielder's choice, but was left stranded as the girls trailed 6-5 to start the seventh.

After a seventh-inning stretch and Adams-Family performance from the middle school cheerleaders, the baseball team came out to try and further their lead. Godzilla hit a quick pop fly but Napoleon Dynamite got on base with a bunt single and was joined by a sumo wrestler soon after. Both were left stranded, however.

A chicken-suited Jensen Arnold caught a line drive from Rutledge to bring in the Lady Sandites in the bottom of the ninth for one last hurrah. Despite having 34 men on the field, the Sandites still gave up a single. A dropped catch on a hit from Coach Smart tied things up. With the bases loaded and Kimi Presnell at bat, the unicorn hit a line drive to James P. Sullivan on third to force extra innings.

The Hulk hit a two-run homer early in the tenth for the 8-6 lead and the girls got another try to save the game. Bambi hit a sacrifice to score Sarasua and the girls needed just one more run, but they came up short after a fly out from Jacie Taber.

The boys won the Golden Pumpkin for the first time, tying the series 1-1.

Sandite Fishing sees success at Grand Lake tournaments

Three Charles Page High School fishing teams spent the weekend at Grand Lake competing in back-to-back tournaments.

On Saturday morning Reese David and Mack Taylor took 39th place in the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Oklahoma Open with a two-pound, three-ounce bass. Braden Millican and Ty Steelman weren't far behind in 45th place with a one-pound, fourteen-ounce catch.

Sunday was the Quantum NextGen Open and the Taylor-David combo brought in four fish weighing 7.66 pounds for ninth place. MIllican and Steelman caught a pair of bass for 5.12 pounds and nineteenth place. Caden Pennington and John Miller caught a 1.49-pound fish for 48th place.

The high school fishing teams do not receive funding from the school, are sponsored by private contribution, and coached by volunteer boat captains.

CPHS Baseball: Josh Cordell pitches 7 strikeouts in 3-0 playoff victory

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The Charles Page High School baseball team (17-19) split games in the first day of the Regional Tournament at Jenks, falling 7-5 in a shootout with the host team (21-12), but winning a 3-0 shutout against Enid (22-13) to stay alive in the post-season.

The Sandites will return to action Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. against Highway 97 rival, the Sapulpa Chieftains (14-21). The Sandites have split wins with Sapulpa this year, falling 1-0 in the season opener, but winning 6-5 in March. Sapulpa topped Enid 6-3 in the first round of Regionals before falling 9-0 to the Trojans.

If the Sandites top their rivals, they'll have to beat Jenks at 6:30 and again Saturday at 1:00 p.m. to earn their way to State.

The Sandites had yet to meet the Trojans this season, but they knew going in that it would be a tough one. While Sand Springs finished district play second to last, the Trojans were the runners-up in their district.

The home team wasted no time jumping out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. Kyler Copeland batted in Cale Savage with a double in the second inning, but Jenks added two more runs for a 5-1 lead

Sand Springs wouldn't go down without a fight, landing four hits for three runs in the top of the third to cut it to a one-run deficit. Mack Thompson started things off with a double, stole third, then scored on a single from Braden Askew. Askew came in on a double from Savage, who scored his second run of the game on a double from Ty Steelman.

Thompson doubled once again in the top of the fourth, bringing in Garrett McCallie to tie the game.

The Trojans reclaimed their lead in the bottom of the fifth, however, and held on for the win.

Brock Youngblood (2-5) got the start on the mound, giving up six hits, five runs, and three earned runs with one strikeout. Braden Millican (2-0) relieved him midway through the second inning and pitched through the fifth. He recorded one strikeout against two hits, three walks, and no runs. Steelman (0-1) came in with the game tied and was stuck with the loss, giving up three hits, two runs, and two walks against two strikeouts.

CPHS 3 Enid 0

(Hits: CPHS 3, Enid 1. Errors: CPHS 2, Enid 1. LOB: CPHS 6, Enid 3.)

In the consolation bracket the Sandites were pitted against a team that had already beaten them twice this season, both times by four runs. But they didn't let that intimidate them.

Senior pitcher Josh Cordell (6-3) led the way on the mound with seven strikeouts in seven innings, giving up only one hit and two walks for the shutout win.

Sand Springs loaded the bases in the bottom of the second and Askew scored on a passed ball to get the Sandites on the board.

In the fifth inning Josh Taber singled, Treyce Tolbert walked, and both scored on an error. Cordell struck out all three batters in the top of the sixth, then the outfield did their job in the seventh to secure the win.
