CPHS Wrestling: No. 2 Mustang routs Sand Springs 60-15 at Ram Duals

In December the Class 6A No. 2 ranked Mustang Broncos (12-1) dealt the No. 8 Charles Page High School wrestling team (4-5) their worst loss in 20 years at 58-9. On Friday they got a rematch, and while the Sandites closed the point differential slightly at 60-15, it marked the most points Sand Springs has given up since at least 1993, which is as far back as Sandite Pride’s records go. Mustang is currently ranked No. 48 in the nation by Intermatwrestle.com, with their only loss coming to nationally No. 25 Broken Arrow.

The Sandites are currently sporting their first losing record since 2007 after going 1-2 in Pool Play at the fifth annual Owasso Ram Duals, but they should have some easier wins on Saturday when they move into the Consolation bracket.

The winners bracket will feature nationally ranked No. 13 Allen, Texas, 6A No. 9 Deer Creek (6-7), the defending Kansas 5A State Champs from Goddard, 3A No. 1 Comanche (11-2), 4A No. 3 Cushing (12-0), 6A No. 6 Edmond Memorial (8-3), Mustang, and 6A No. 11 Owasso (6-5).

The consolation bracket will include 3A No. 5 Perry (7-6), Watonga (2-10), 5A No. 12 Claremore (6-13), Owasso JV, Kansas 6A Runner-Up Manhattan, 3A No. 10 Newkirk (6-7), Springdale, and Sand Springs. The Sandites will wrestle Watonga first, then either Newkirk or Claremore.

Mustang won the first three matches and took a 15-0 lead before the Sandites got on the board. Kidd Johnson pinned Ethan Norton (3-12, 3-17) at 126, Weldon Bryan pinned Carter Goodman (7-7), then Keegan Luton won a 9-4 decision over Blake Jones (15-7, 41-21) in a battle of returning State Qualifiers.

Preston Medlin (11-12, 24-34) got the Sandites on the board at 145 with a 7-0 decision over Claude Moates, but Colt Fischer responded with a 17-1 technical fall against Chase White (7-12, 7-14). Chris Kirby (19-8, 77-32) pinned Mark Boyd in 31 seconds to make it 20-9.

State Qualifier Joseph Sylvester pinned Dakota Taylor (1-13, 1-20), State Qualifier Brannigan Reyes pinned Sango Whitehorn (7-15, 9-19), State Champion Tate Picklo pinned Brooks Dudley (16-14, 26-22), State Qualifier Jack Kitchingham pinned Santana Naugle (0-3, 3-12) and State Champion Judson Rowland pinned Josh Fincannon (22-10, 61-44) to clinch the dual at 50-9.

Shane Wolf (9-9) broke up the Bronco run with a pin of Haeden London at 106, but Mustang won the final two matches as well. State Qualifier Shelton Chastain teched Mitchell Smith (9-4) and State Champion Tucker Owen teched Colton Luker (1-9, 2-9) to end the night.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites beat Springdale 44-27 at Ram Duals tournament

Pictured: Preston Medlin competes at the Bobby Lyons Invitational. Medlin pinned his opponent at 52 seconds in a dual with Springdale Friday.

After suffering a surprise upset to No. 11 Owasso in the first round of the 5th Annual Ram Duals, the Sandites got back on track with a 44-27 win over Springdale, Arkansas. The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (4-4) earned bonus points in all eight of their wins, with four pins and two forfeits.

Springdale started off well, with Zayne Lewis winning the first match 8-2 against Shane Wolf (8-9). Mitchell Smith (9-3) got the Sandites out front with an 11-0 major decision against State Qualifier Trinton Evans, but State Qualifier Meinshu Jiang eked out a 10-8 sudden-victory win against Harley Newberry (5-10) and State Qualifier Peter Henry won 5-3 against Ethan Norton (3-11, 3-16).

Then it was the Sand Springs show. Freshman Carter Goodman (7-6) pinned State Qualifier Timoj Mewa in 4:36, Blake Jones (15-6, 41-20) received a forfeit, and Preston Medlin (10-12, 23-34) pinned Johey River in 0:52 to make it 22-9.

State Qualifier Terri Wise pinned Ethan White (3-8) in 4:26, but the Sandite put up a solid effort with two takedowns and led 6-4 before the fall. Chris Kirby (18-8, 76-32) received a forfeit at 160, then J.R. Leban pinned Dakota Taylor (1-12, 1-19) in 2:00.

Sango Whitehorn (7-14, 9-18) earned a 9-1 major decision against Jason Pedrus, Brooks Dudley (16-13, 26-21) pinned Ernesto Casas in 2:13, and Josh Fincannon (22-9, 61-43) pinned Ethan Nessar in 1:28 before Springdale’s Jadon Wilkerson ended the dual with a pin at 285 against Robbie Parrish (6-12, 8-27).

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites upset 40-22 by Owasso

Mitchell Smith (pictured here at the Bobby Lyons Tournament) earned the Sandites their only lead of the dual against Owasso Friday afternoon.

For the first time since 2007, the Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (3-4) has a losing record. The Sandites pummeled Owasso 55-11 in the second dual of the season, but the stars aligned for the home team at the 5th Annual Owasso Ram Duals on Friday, marking the Rams’ first victory over Sand Springs since at least 1993, which is as far back as Sandite Pride records go. No. 11 Owasso improved to 5-5 with their fourth-straight win.

The dual started at 113, where freshman Mitchell Smith (8-3) earned a 9-5 decision over Troy Bullman. In their first dual of the year Bullman fell 15-0 to Brendon Wiseley, who has since quit the team.

At 120 Leyton Warne won 7-2 over Harley Newberry (5-9) to tie the dual up. In their first meeting Warne was pinned by Caden Vaughn. At 126 State Qualifier EJ Tecson pinned Ethan Norton (3-10, 3-15). He also pinned Caleb Phillips in their first meeting.

Kilian McNichol cut down to 132 where he earned a 10-1 major decision against freshman Carter Goodman (6-6). The Sandites were without State Qualifier Seth Jones. In their first dual McNichol was defeated 3-1 by Blake Jones. This time Blake Jones (14-6, 40-20) picked up a much-needed pin at 138 against Bryson Perez.

Preston Medlin (9-12, 22-34) also came up big for the Sandites. He edged out Perez 3-0 in December, but this time he won a 10-0 major decision against Chad Herbert at 145.

Ethan White (3-7) suffered from a change in opponents. In December he won 12-3 against Herbert, but this time he was pinned at the absolute last second by Braxton Bacon, who was absent from the Rams’ lineup last month.

State Qualifier Nate Jacobson pinned Chase White (7-12, 7-14) at 160, who he teched in December. Chris Kirby (17-8, 75-32) repeated his December success, pinning Zachery Conrad in only 19 seconds.

Sango Whitehorn (6-14, 8-18) got a new opponent at 182. In December he majored Jesse Newby 15-6, but this time Newby was replaced by Mark Turner, who pinned the Sandite in 5:48.

Brooks Dudley (15-13, 25-21) was the final Sandite to record a win, beating Scott Ghavami 11-6, who he pinned in their first meeting.

Josh Fincannon (22-8, 61-42) beat Devin Harris 7-3 in December, but this time he was bumped up to heavyweight . Santana Naugle (0-3, 3-12) filled in at 220 and this time Harris got the 3-2 decision. Fincannon was unable to get the win against true heavyweight Tyler Rich, who won 6-1 in sudden victory overtime. Rich did not compete in the teams’ first meeting, and Robbie Parrish received a forfeit then.

The dual ended at 106, where Zeke Wheeler won a 7-2 payback decision against Shane Wolf (8-8). Wolf won their first meeting 8-7.
