6X Sandite of the Week: Cheyenne Walden wins two more State Championships

Charles Page High School senior and Oklahoma State University commit Cheyenne Walden won her eighth and ninth State Championship titles last weekend at Yukon High School, wrapping up the most productive high school athletic career in Sand Springs history. The four-time Cross Country State Champion and five-time Track State Champion ran her last race Wednesday at the OTCA Meet of Champions.

Walden has recorded a number of remarkable performances in her time at Charles Page. The six-time Sandite of the Week has won a total of 72 first-place medals during her high school career and is the most decorated athlete in Sand Springs history, when considering only OSSAA sanctioned events.

In Cross Country she has won 29 total first-place medals. She won two one-mile runs, ten two-mile runs, seventeen five-kilometer runs, including four Conference Championships, four Regional Championships, four State Championships, and one Meet of Champions.

In Track she has won 43 first-place medals. She has won two 800-meter runs, six 1600-meter runs, and 29 3200-meter runs, including four Conference Championships, six Regional Championships, five State Championships, and two Meet of Champions. In the 3200 meter run she has won 25-straight events and hasn't lost since the State Meet her freshman year.

Walden's personal best in the 800 meter run is 2:17.58, which netted her fourth in State as a junior, only seven seconds behind the all-time Oklahoma State record. Her niche lies in distance running, however, and she only competed in the 800 once this season. She won that event.

In the 1600 she holds a personal-best of 4:57.07, set just last week in the 6A State Meet. That mark was the all-time best performance at a State Championship meet, and was less than three seconds behind the State record. On average, she won each 1600 run by 5.78 seconds this season.

In the 3200 her personal record is 10:45.43, only seven seconds behind the State record. On average, she won each 3200 run by 52.88 seconds this year.

In Cross Country she holds a PR 5:21 in the one-mile, 11:19.5 in the two-mile, and 17:32 in the 5K.

CPHS Track: Cheyenne Walden wins ninth State Championship, breaks State Record

Charles Page High School senior Cheyenne Walden won her ninth State title Saturday afternoon in Yukon. In the 1600 meter run she finished with a State-record performance of 4:57.07, knocking more than three seconds off the former State record of 5:00.75 set in 2003. She was eight seconds ahead of the Runner-Up, and five seconds ahead of her previous personal-best. This was her eleventh first-place medal in a 1600 run, for which she also won State last year.

On Friday she won the 3200 meter run, defeating the Runner-Up by more than twenty-two seconds for her 24th-straight first-place finish and 28th win overall. She hasn't lost in that event since placing third at State during her freshman year.

The Oklahoma State University-commit already held seven State titles coming into this weekend's OSSAA 6A State Championship. When looking only at official OSSAA sanctioned events, Walden is the most decorated athlete in Sand Springs history.

Sophomore Aden Baughman has been utterly unstoppable in the 800 meter run this season. He has won six out of seven track meets, capping the year with his first 6A State Championship.

Not only did he win the State Championship with the fastest performance of his career, but he won with a three-second margin of victory over the runner-up. The 1:53.16 run was a remarkable improvement over his Regional run of 1:55.42, which was already the fastest time of the season for any high school athlete at any meet in Oklahoma, at any classification. His new time was only 1.46 seconds behind the all-time State Tournament record set in 2007.

The next four runners after Baughman were all seniors, leaving him with a 4.35 margin of victory over any runner he'll compete against next year. He also competed in the 1600 run and took tenth place in 4:33.12. He was only 2.7 seconds behind his personal-best and 13.81 seconds behind the champion.

Colton Washington took seventh place in the long jump, leaping 21'11.25".

Kris Edwards took tenth place in shot put with throws of 44'01.50", 45'01.50", and 47'01.50".

The Lady Sandite 3200 relay team, comprised of Walden, Alexis Davis, Elizabeth Watts, and Tiqvah Soap, took eleventh place with a time of 10:29.79.

The boys' 3200 relay team, comprised of Jaelyn Jackson, Ian Baustert, Jacob Garbey, and Baughman, took twelfth place with a time of 8:20.89, beating their season-best by nearly two seconds. It was the best Sandite performance since the 2013 team ran a pair of 8:17's to win the Skiatook meet and Regional meet.

Soap placed sixteenth in the 800 meter run with a career-best performance of 2:30.79.

Charles Page High School sophomore Aden Baughman has been utterly unstoppable in the 800 meter run this season, blowing away competitors left and right everywhere he goes. He has won six out of seven track meets, capping the year with a 6A State Championship win in Yukon.

She defeated the Runner-Up by more than twenty-two seconds for her 24th-straight first-place finish and 28th win overall. She hasn't lost in the event since placing third at State during her freshman year.

The Oklahoma State University-commit already held seven State titles coming into this weekend's OSSAA 6A State Championship, and she still has the opportunity to win one more before her high school career comes to a close. She will also compete Saturday in the 1600, where she is also the defending State Champion. When looking only at official OSSAA sanctioned events, Walden is the most decorated athlete in Sand Springs history.

The Lady Sandite 3200 relay team, comprised of Walden, Alexis Davis, Elizabeth Watts, and Tiqvah Soap, took eleventh place with a time of 10:29.79. Bartlesville took first place in 9:35.63.

He came in Runner-Up at the Frontier Valley Conference meet two weeks ago, but knocked more than two seconds off his time at Regionals.

Not only was his 1:55.42 performance the best of his career, but it was the best time of the year for any Oklahoma high school athlete at any classification. According to Assistant Coach Rodney Echohawk, Baughman's time is the second-best in school history.

Baughman is also a State contender in the 1600 where he qualified with a runner-up performance and a career-best 4:30.42. He hasn't won the 1600 yet, but he has come in runner-up at three-straight meets, and has improved on his personal record all three times.
