Cheyenne Henry signs with Eastern Oklahoma State

Charles Page High School Class of 2019 graduate Cheyenne Henry has signed to play softball at Eastern Oklahoma State College (EOSC) following one season at Barton Community College in Great Bend, Kansas.

Henry has a history as a two-sport athlete, playing varsity volleyball in high school before focusing on softball at the next level. Barton saw its spring softball season cut short this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ending the year with a 10-9 record. Henry appeared in nine games as a pitcher/utility player and was 0-1 in the circle with a 7.27 ERA and six strikeouts in eight innings. She had a 1.00 fielding percentage, .333 batting average, and .500 on-base percentage.

EOSC is a two-year community college in Wilburton, Oklahoma. The Mountaineers compete in the NJCAA and went 14-12 in this year’s shortened season.

CPHS Baseball: Jaxon Skaggs to pitch in Senior Series Saturday at OneOK Field

Recent Charles Page High School graduate Jaxon Skaggs will be playing one last high school baseball game this Saturday at OneOK Field in Tulsa.

The Tulsa Drillers and the Tulsa Area Baseball Coaches Association will be hosting a two-day High School Senior Series on Independence Day weekend. The first game will be played Friday, July 3rd at 7:00 p.m., and game two will be Saturday, July 4th at 7:00 p.m. Both games will be followed by fireworks.

Friday’s game will pit East (Claremore, Glenpool, Jenks, Edison, Pryor, Metro Christian) against West (Bixby, Cascia Hall, Holland Hall, Sapulpa, Kiefer). Saturday will be North (Verdigris, Bishop Kelley, Sand Springs, Owasso, Victory Christian, Liberty, Coweta) versus South (Broken Arrow, Union, Regent Prep).

Skaggs, who is signed with Missouri Baptist University, will be the only Sandite to play. The Sandites only played eight games this year before the season was canceled due to COVID-19. Skaggs only pitched two games and was 1-0 on the mound with a 3.4 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, and 13 strikeouts in 12.1 innings.

“The Drillers are glad to make ONEOK Field available for these great matchups and to give senior baseball players a final chance to play high school baseball in front of their family and friends,” said Drillers President Mike Melega in a press release. “We hope to make it a pair of special evenings for everyone involved, capped by giant holiday fireworks displays both nights.”

Fans will be allowed to attend games, but COVID-19 restrictions and limitations will apply. Capacity at ONEOK Field will be less than half of normal capacity as safe-distancing standards will be observed.

Jerret Haley and Dalton DuVall place 2nd at OBN Fishing State Championship

After the Spring events were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Oklahoma Bass Nation high school fishing season resumed on Saturday, June 13th, at Lake Tenkiller. Saturday saw the third and final Trail event, and on Sunday the State Championship was held.

Gunner Casey and Cruz Norris placed ninth on Saturday with four fish totaling 10.88 pounds. Mack Taylor and Reese David were 13th with four fish weighing 9.96 pounds. Austin Smith and Joe Nelson placed 14th with four fish weighing 9.72 pounds. Jerret Haley and Dalton DuVall placed 38th with three fish weighing 5.64 pounds. Kyle and Kale Hilligoss placed 47th with two fish weighing 4.26 pounds. There were 72 total entrees in the event.

Haley and DuVall placed second on Sunday with four catches weighing 13.01 pounds, including the biggest fish of the tournament at 4.76 pounds. The Hilligosses were third with four fishing totaling 12.36 pounds. Taylor and David were 16th with four fish totaling 9.74 pounds. Casey and Norris were 25th with four fish weighing 8.56 pounds. Smith and Nelson placed 40th with three fish weighing 5.7 pounds.

Taylor and David finished fourth in the final team trail standings. Haley and DuVall were seventh, Norris and Casey were 14th, Smith and Nelson were 18th, and the Hilligosses were 32nd. Cole Scott and Seth Kearns missed the final two events but finished 40th.

Several Sand Springs disc golfers turned out for the Bachelor Bash disc golf tournament at McClure Park on Sunday. The PDGA-sanctioned one-round C-Tier tournament was hosted by Innova-sponsored local pro DeVan Owens, who will soon be marrying and relocating to Arizona.

Seth Cook tied for first place in the Pro Masters 40+ division with a score of 55 for a 915-rated round.

Virgil Noah placed 12th in Advanced with a score of 55 for a 915-rated round.

Kristal Briggs won the Intermediate Women’s Division with a 618-rated score of 81.

Dwight Griffis tied for second in Recreational with an 846-rated score of 61.

Scott Emigh won Novice with an 881-rated score of 58, followed by Mitchell Martin and Dylan Ward, who tied for second with an 835-rated score of 62. Dale Briggs placed seventh with a 744-rated score of 70.

Sand Springs man ties River City course record

Dwight Griffis throws an up-shot on Hole 15 at the River City disc golf course.

Local Sand Springs disc golfer Dwight Griffis tied the U-Disc course record at River City this Tuesday. Griffis shot a 39 on the Par 54 course located inside Case Community Park, tying the previous record set on July 29, 2018.

It is possible that others have shot better rounds on the course, but this article is only referencing rounds recorded in U-Disc, the official app of the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA).

Griffis’s previous personal best on the course was ten under par, and he improved on it by five strokes. He played three consecutive rounds on the day of the record, and was a cumulative 33 strokes under par, with no bogeys.

In the record-tying round, Griffis had two long birdie streaks. He birdied eight holes in a row before shooting par on Hole 12, then birdied six more holes to close out the round. He then birdied the first two holes of round three to complete a second eight-birdie run.

Because River City has never hosted a tournament, there are no “official” rounds or course records. The only scores logged on the course are “casual” rounds, which may or may not have witnesses, and the scores in U-Disc have to be trusted through an honor system. In Griffis’s case, he had three witnesses to verify his round, including the author of this article, and an official within the Sand Springs Parks Department.

Sand Springs disc golfer Mitchell Martin threw a hole-in-one on Hole 5 at River City Tuesday.

One of Griffis’s witnesses, Mitchell Martin, threw a hole-in-one, also known as an “ace,” on Hole 5 that same day. Aces are more common than hitting a hole-in-one on the ball golf course, but they’re still rare, and many players go years without throwing one.

River City is currently the only disc golf course in Sand Springs, and its current layout was installed in 2017 as part of a $6 million park renovation. Three years later, the course is about to be completely redesigned.

Modern disc golf emerged in the 1960s following the invention of the Frisbee. The first official disc golf course was installed in Pasadena, California in 1975. 45 years later and there are now more than 8,400 disc golf courses worldwide with more than 53,000 active dues-paying members of the PDGA.
