CPHS Basketball: Muskogee upsets Sandites, Richardson scores 22

The Frontier Valley showed Tuesday why it’s one of the toughest conferences in 6A when unranked Muskogee (7-8, 3-4) knocked off No. 7 Sand Springs (12-3, 4-3) in a low-scoring 56-54 affair at the Ed Dubie Field House. The upset snapped a four-game Rougher losing streak in the series dating back to 2017.

The conference has been plagued by circular losses this season. Top teams Jenks, Booker T. Washington, Sand Springs, and Broken Arrow all have losses to lesser-ranked teams, showing a lot of parity around the league.

Sand Springs started the season with ten-straight wins, but is 2-3 in their last five games. Meanwhile Muskogee is storming back at 4-1 in their last five after starting the year 3-7.

University of Central Oklahoma-commit Davon Richardson led all scorers with his fourth-straight double-double, scoring 22 points with 16 rebounds. Those added rebounds have come with a cost, however, as 6’6” center Jaeden Hurd injured his knee four games ago.

The Roughers were able to seriously limit another crucial playmaker in Marlo Fox, who scored eight points less than his season average. This marked the first time this season that only one Sandite scored in double digits.

The Sandites played good inside defense, allowing only four offensive rebounds and ten goals from two-point range with a season-best four blocks. But the Roughers were deadly from three-point range with the best percentage of any Sandite foe this season. Muskogee also won the turnover battle and committed only 8 fouls to the Sandites’ 17, resulting in 12 points from the charity stripe.

Jaraun Campbell hit a three to start the game, and the Sandites played from the hole for almost the entire night. Richardson briefly tied it up, but Joseph Campbell, Jaraun Campbell, and James Brown combined for a 10-3 lead and stayed out front despite buckets from Ethan Oakley, Cason Savage, Cale Askew, and Daren Hawkins.

The Sand Springs second string played much of the second quarter, but was unable to find the basket and it was Savage and Richardson combining for a meager seven points and a 27-18 halftime deficit after Muskogee scored eight in a row.

It looked like the home team was finally firing on all cylinders in the third quarter as they stormed back 22-12 to take their first and only lead with 10 seconds left in the period. Richardson scored ten points in the stanza and Josh Minney scored the go-ahead free throw.

The Roughers refused to let their hard work go unrewarded and buckled down in the fourth, scoring eight straight to reclaim the advantage. The Sandites gave up ten free throws in their attempts to slow down the clock and ultimately came up a bucket short, despite finishing strong with seven unanswered points.

The Sandites will return to action Friday at 8:00 p.m. with a conference road game at Bixby (6-8, 2-5). Muskogee will be hoping to ride their momentum into another major upset when they host No. 2 Jenks (14-1) Friday at 8:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites pummel Muskogee 86-64, Armstead scores 20

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (12-3, 5-2) easily handled unranked Muskogee (5-11, 0-7) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, winning the conference game 86-64 in their second-highest-scoring outing of the season.

Sophomore standout Journey Armstead was just one rebound shy of a triple double, with 20 points, 10 assists, and 9 rebounds. Three other Sandites also scored in the double digits. Madison Burris scored a career-high 17, Raegan Padilla scored a career-high 16, and Hailey Jackson tied her career-high of 15.

The Sandites took an easy 13-0 lead before the Roughers got on the board. Armstead scored the first bucket, followed by a three from Padilla and two-point baskets from Burris and Jade Shrum. Padilla scored a two as well and Armstead scored a pair of free throws before Sophia Regalado sent Dezeray Burton to the line for two.

Regalado made up for that foul by scoring a bucket of her own, then Darrian Jordan scored two from the line. Muskogee ended on a high note with a free throw then a two from Shamana Virgil to end the quarter 17-5.

Jordan and Virgil traded blows to start the second quarter, then Regalado added her second basket. D’Asia Brown entered the score book with two from the charity stripe, then Jackson and Armstead scored back-to-back to make it 25-9.

The dominant lead began to slip away as Muskogee went on a 13-2 run late in the quarter. Regalado broke up a seven-point streak, but Akira Eubanks hit back-to-back threes to end the half 33-28.

Armstead kicked off the second half with a three, but the Roughers continued to battle back. Eubanks hit her third three and Burton made a free throw to cut it to 40-38 with under 5:00 in the third.

The teams traded blows till 42-40, then Burris scored a two and a three back-to-back, Bayleigh Cheney made a putback, and Padilla scored three baskets and a free throw on a fourteen-point streak. Eubanks broke up the streak with back-to-back threes, but Armstead had the final say of the quarter at 58-46.

The home team deepened their lead in the final stanza behind a ten-point effort from Burris and seven points from both Armstead and Jackson.

Virgil led all scorers with 22 points, and she had two other teammates in the double digits. Eubanks scored 17 and had all five of her team’s three-pointers. Burton added 12.

Sand Springs Basketball will return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. with a conference road game against No. 11 Bixby (9-6, 3-3). Muskogee will host No. 20 Jenks (7-8, 2-5) Friday at 6:30 p.m.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites beat Watonga, Claremore, and Perry at Ram Duals

Chris Kirby competes in a dual against Collinsville. Kirby went undefeated for the Sandites at the Ram Duals this weekend, winning six matches.

After going 1-2 in pool play at the 5th Annual Owasso Ram Duals, the Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (7-5) finished strong on Saturday, winning the consolation bracket with three dual victories.

The Sandites beat Springdale 44-27 on day one, but fell 40-22 to No. 11 Owasso (7-7) and 60-15 to No. 2 Mustang (14-2). On Saturday they won 59-19 against Watonga (2-13), 43-28 against 5A No. 12 Claremore (7-15), and 37-36 against 3A No. 5 Perry (9-7).

Goddard, the defending Kansas 5A State Champions won the tournament with two surprising upsets, defeating nationally ranked No. 48 Mustang and and No. 13 Allen, Texas. Former Sandite Kaden Glass, who moved to Kansas this past summer, went 5-1 with his new team, with his only loss coming to State Champion University of Oklahoma-commit Tate Picklo, who is ranked 10th in the nation.

Sophomore Blake Jones and freshman Mitchell Smith were 5-1 for the Sandites, and sophomore Brooks Dudley was 4-1. Seniors Preston Medlin and Chris Kirby both went undefeated at 6-0.

CPHS 59 Watonga 19

Dalton Rayburn won the opening match for Watonga by pinning freshman Carter Goodman (7-8), but Jones (18-7, 44-21) got the Sandites on the board with a new school record for fastest tech fall at 138 pounds, beating Micheal Reza 17-2 in only 2:00.

Medlin (14-12, 27-34) put Sand Springs out front once and for all by pinning Tanner Williams in 1:25. Chase White (8-15, 8-17) pinned Cayman Wicoreck in 3:35 and Kirby (22-8, 80-32) received a forfeit to make it 23-6.

Joe Jackson majored Dakota Taylor (1-14, 1-21) and Dalton Laird pinned Sango Whitehorn (8-17, 10-21) to cut it to 23-16, but Thomas Naugle (4-4, 5-6) pinned Ernesto Duenez in 3:24 and Josh Fincannon (25-10, 64-44) received a forfeit. Ethan Henderson won a 2-1 decision over Robbie Parrish (6-13, 8-28), but that would be the last win for the Eagles.

Shane Wolf (11-10) received a forfeit at 106, Mitchell Smith (12-4) pinned Shawn Johnson in 0:33, Colton Luker (2-10, 3-10) pinned Dakota Morris in 1:53, and Ethan Norton (4-14, 4-19) received a forfeit to conclude the dual.

CPHS 43 Claremore 28

The Sandites never trailed against Claremore, taking a 16-0 lead right out of the gate. Hunter Hilger (1-3) and Jones received forfeits, then Medlin majored Caden Tilly 8-0.

The next six matches alternated between the two teams. Ashton Stevenson got the Zebras on the board with a tech fall against White then Kirby retaliated by pinning Jakoby Banks in 1:35. State Qualifier Isaac Guinn majored Whitehorn 10-2, Dudley (18-14, 28-22) pinned Spencer Lewis in 1:12, then Blake Bacon won a 5-3 decision over Santana Naugle (0-3, 3-12).

Fincannon eked out a 1-0 decision over State Qualifier Ryan Cochran and Wolf pinned Rose Grubowski in 0:47 to clinch the dual. Smith padded the win with a pin of Brandt Phelan in 0:42.

Claremore won the final three matches. Kearanie Johnson majored Harley Newberry (5-11), State Qualifier Kaden Stanley pinned Norton, and State Qualifier Kai Shultz received a forfeit.

CPHS 37 Perry 36

In the consolation finals the Sandites took on the most storied program in all of high school wrestling, the 63-time State Champions from Perry. Sand Springs won eight matches to Perry’s six, but all of Perry’s wins were by fall or forfeit, and Sand Springs trailed 36-33 coming into the final match.

State Champion Dylan Avery received a forfeit at 145, then Medlin got the Sandites on the board with a 2-0 decision against Kohl Witter. Josh Kime pinned White, then Sand Springs went on a five match win streak.

Kirby pinned Charlie Gilbreath in only 11 seconds, Whitehorn won a 5-2 decision over Ethan Hughes, Thomas Naugle received a forfeit, Dudley pinned Huner Nelson in 0:53, and Fincannon won a 4-0 decision against Chaz Polifka for the 27-12 lead.

Angel Tiscareno broke up the run by pinning Wolf, but Smith responded by pinning Hunter Coldiron in 2:00. Then came the Perry comeback. State Qualifier Gabe Valencia pinned Luker, State Champion Ryan Smith pinned Norton, and State Qualifier Logan Smith pinned Hilger to reclaim the lead.

It all came down to 138, where Jones needed a major decision or greater to secure the dual. A takedown in the third period put him in the bonus against Kaleb Owen for the one-point win.

The Sandites will return to action Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. with a district quad against Sapulpa (2-3), Muskogee (1-2), and Ponca City (2-5) as they look for their fifth consecutive District title.
