CPHS Wrestling: Sandites upset 40-22 by Owasso

Mitchell Smith (pictured here at the Bobby Lyons Tournament) earned the Sandites their only lead of the dual against Owasso Friday afternoon.

For the first time since 2007, the Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (3-4) has a losing record. The Sandites pummeled Owasso 55-11 in the second dual of the season, but the stars aligned for the home team at the 5th Annual Owasso Ram Duals on Friday, marking the Rams’ first victory over Sand Springs since at least 1993, which is as far back as Sandite Pride records go. No. 11 Owasso improved to 5-5 with their fourth-straight win.

The dual started at 113, where freshman Mitchell Smith (8-3) earned a 9-5 decision over Troy Bullman. In their first dual of the year Bullman fell 15-0 to Brendon Wiseley, who has since quit the team.

At 120 Leyton Warne won 7-2 over Harley Newberry (5-9) to tie the dual up. In their first meeting Warne was pinned by Caden Vaughn. At 126 State Qualifier EJ Tecson pinned Ethan Norton (3-10, 3-15). He also pinned Caleb Phillips in their first meeting.

Kilian McNichol cut down to 132 where he earned a 10-1 major decision against freshman Carter Goodman (6-6). The Sandites were without State Qualifier Seth Jones. In their first dual McNichol was defeated 3-1 by Blake Jones. This time Blake Jones (14-6, 40-20) picked up a much-needed pin at 138 against Bryson Perez.

Preston Medlin (9-12, 22-34) also came up big for the Sandites. He edged out Perez 3-0 in December, but this time he won a 10-0 major decision against Chad Herbert at 145.

Ethan White (3-7) suffered from a change in opponents. In December he won 12-3 against Herbert, but this time he was pinned at the absolute last second by Braxton Bacon, who was absent from the Rams’ lineup last month.

State Qualifier Nate Jacobson pinned Chase White (7-12, 7-14) at 160, who he teched in December. Chris Kirby (17-8, 75-32) repeated his December success, pinning Zachery Conrad in only 19 seconds.

Sango Whitehorn (6-14, 8-18) got a new opponent at 182. In December he majored Jesse Newby 15-6, but this time Newby was replaced by Mark Turner, who pinned the Sandite in 5:48.

Brooks Dudley (15-13, 25-21) was the final Sandite to record a win, beating Scott Ghavami 11-6, who he pinned in their first meeting.

Josh Fincannon (22-8, 61-42) beat Devin Harris 7-3 in December, but this time he was bumped up to heavyweight . Santana Naugle (0-3, 3-12) filled in at 220 and this time Harris got the 3-2 decision. Fincannon was unable to get the win against true heavyweight Tyler Rich, who won 6-1 in sudden victory overtime. Rich did not compete in the teams’ first meeting, and Robbie Parrish received a forfeit then.

The dual ended at 106, where Zeke Wheeler won a 7-2 payback decision against Shane Wolf (8-8). Wolf won their first meeting 8-7.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites batter Bruins 61-40 on Homecoming, Richardson scores 28

The Class 6A No. 7 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (12-2, 4-2) picked up a 61-40 Frontier Valley Conference win over Bartlesville (1-9, 0-6) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, winning handily on Homecoming. University of Central Oklahoma-committed senior Davon Richardson led all scorers with a season-high 22 points and 15 rebounds for his third-straight double-double.

The Sandites were without 6’6” center Jaeden Hurd, who injured his knee two games prior, and struggled early on. They didn’t take their first lead till five minutes into the game. The Bruins ended the first quarter on an eight-point run, including back-to-back threes from Aodi Ayyaappan for a 14-8 advantage.

The Sandites blew their visitors away in the second quarter, going on an early thirteen-point streak. Shane Simpson broke up the run, but Richardson and Ethan Oakley combined for six more to take their first double-digit lead at 29-19. The Bruins ended the half with a three-point play from Chris Ward.

Marlo Fox and Cason Savage combined for seven to start the second half. Troy Reibel hit a three for the Bruins, then Richardson got hot and scored the home team’s next eight points. Josh Minney and Daren Hawkins also hit layups and entered the final stanza with a 48-28 lead.

Sand Springs had its biggest lead at 59-32. Jordan Carter made a three, Richardson dunked on a beautiful pass from Fox, then the visitors scored five-straight against the Sandite reserves to end the night.

McKenzie Harris was crowned Homecoming Queen at halftime of the varsity boys’ game. Richardson was Kissing Captain.

Sandite Basketball will take a week off before hosting Muskogee (3-7, 1-4) next Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. They have won four-straight meetings with the Roughers. Bartlesville will compete at the Deer Creek Tournament in Edmond this Thursday through Saturday.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites rout Bartlesville 63-31 on Homecoming, Armstead scores 20

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (11-3, 4-2) handily won their fourth-straight meeting with Bartlesville (5-5, 2-3) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, beating their Frontier Valley Conference foe 63-31 on Homecoming behind a 20-point effort from sophomore standout Journey Armstead.

Armstead led all scorers with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 blocks. Hailey Jackson had 11 points and Darrian Jordan scored 10 to put three Sandites in double digits. Chloe Martin scored 11 to pace the Bruins.

The first quarter was the Martin show as the Bruin scored her team’s first eight points and the visitors led for much of the period before the Sandites kicked it in gear and scored ten-straight. Jackson scored four from the charity stripe to reclaim the lead at 3:20, then Bayleigh Cheney sank a three and Jordan laid up for the 14-8 advantage. Mary Cone broke up the run with a three, but Cheney added two more from the stripe and Armstead hit a three to end the quarter at 19-11.

T’Keitha Valentine made a three to start the second quarter and the Bruins hung tight till the final three minutes when Armstead scored six in a row, including a four-point play for their first double-digit lead with 2:30 in the half. The visitors were hampered by fouls and even Head Coach Donnie Martin earned a technical, contributing to a ten-point run by the Sandites to end the half. The Bruins had 17 fouls at the half, compared to six from Sand Springs, and the Sandites were 14-of-17 at the free throw line for a 34-19 advantage.

Jackson missed most of the third quarter after drawing her fourth foul a minute in, but the deep Sandite bench didn’t miss her. Sand Springs held the Bruins to only four points in the third quarter, and Armstead hit a three at the end of the quarter to double the visitors at 46-23.

Armstead doubled the Bruins again at 56-28 with 3:42 to play after scoring her 20th point. She also recorded assists on the baskets that put Jackson and Jordan in double digits. Fayth Walker entered the game with two minutes remaining and was three-for-three with seven points.

Sand Springs Basketball will take a week off before hosting Muskogee (3-8, 0-5) next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. They have won five-straight meetings with the Lady Roughers. Bartlesville will compete at the Carl Albert Invitational in Midwest City beginning this Thursday.
