CPHS Basketball: Undefeated Sandites win 6th-straight at Owasso, Richardson scores 24

The Class 6A No. 20 ranked Owasso boys’ basketball team (0-2, 0-2) played close for three quarters against No. 7 Sand Springs, but never led and was ultimately left in the dust as Charles Page High School improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Frontier Valley Conference Tuesday night. The 59-46 win marked the Sandites’ first 6-0 start since 2015.

University of Central Oklahoma-committed senior Davon Richardson led all scorers iwith 24 points, closely followed by junior standout Marlo Fox with 18.

Fox hit a three to start the night, and the Rams were behind the eight-ball from the very beginning. Fox scored the first three baskets for the Sandites, including two threes. Hawkins put up five and Richardson added six for a 19-12 first quarter advantage.

Owasso wouldn’t let the Sandites run away with things, and won the second period 12-11 thanks to a late three from Kyler Mann, who finished the night with 12 points. A layup from Hawkins gave the visitors their first double-digit lead with 1:45 remaining in the third quarter, but Caden Fry made a three-point play for the Rams to keep things close.

Richardson drained a buzzer-beater three to make it 43-33 going into the fourth quarter. Fry dunked on a steal to kick off the final stanza, but Sand Springs went on a 14-2 run with eight points from Richardson for their biggest lead of the night at 57-37.

Fry led the Rams with 14 points, followed by Trenton Ellison with 13. Mann led his team with 12 points prior to fouling out with 4:08 in the game.

Sand Springs will take a week off before returning to action Thursday, December 26th at 11:00 a.m. against the Green Country Defenders (5-3) in the first round of the Enid Holiday Classic. Owasso will play Westmoore (3-3) on the 26th at 1:30 p.m. in the Mustang Holiday Classic.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites throttle NW Arkansas 80-39, five score double digits

The Northwest Arkansas Hornets (1-6) were barely even a blip on the Sandites’ radar Saturday morning at the Tulsa Memorial Veterans Arena Invitational, as the undefeated Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (5-0) rolled to a lopsided 80-39 win, despite giving the backups more minutes than the starters. It marked the fourth time in the past five years that the Sandites have gone undefeated at the festival-style event.

The team was without Cason Savage and Daren Hawkins, and Costen Brockman picked up his first varsity start. The entire Sandite bench saw action, and the backups outscored the starters 49-31. Most of the Sandites logged minutes in the first half after they jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter lead, then scored 24-straight through the second and went into the locker room with a 46-12 advantage.

Sand Springs used a 13-point run in the fourth for its biggest lead of the game at 80-36 before giving up three in the final minute.

Arkansas’s Nick Kirkman led all scorers with 15 points, and Trevor Altemeier had 10 for the Hornets. Marlo Fox’s 13 points were his lowest output of the season, but it was enough to lead the Sandites for the fifth-straight game. Cale Askew was the tenth player off the bench, but he put up 12 points, followed by Davon Richardson, Jason Clark, and Trevor Stone with 10 apiece. Fourteen Sandites saw action and eleven made their way onto the scoreboard.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. with a Frontier Valley Conference road game against No. 17 Owasso (0-1). The Hornets will travel to Ozark Adventist (1-1) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
