CPHS Wrestling: Sandites place 6th at Perry with three finalists

The Class 6A No. 7 ranked Charles Page High School varsity wrestling team competed at the Perry Tournament of Champions this weekend and sent three to the finals in a 6th-place effort. No. 2 Choctaw won the tournament, closely followed by No. 8 Stillwater and No. 5 Edmond Memorial.

Seth Jones (5-1, 49-30) dominated the 126-pound bracket, pinning Jacob Quinton (Choctaw) in 0:31 and Garrett Washington (Bixby) in 2:40, then won an 18-2 technical fall against Kai Shultz (Claremore) in only 2:36 with four takedowns and 9 nearfall points. In the finals he gave up 3-2 decision to State Qualifier Cade Nicholas (Stillwater).

Blake Jones (5-1, 31-15) breezed through 138 with a 15-0 technical fall against Rashaud Morgan (Vinita) in 2:25 for a new school record at that weight class. In the quarterfinals he pinned Colton Kern (Weatherford) in 1:49, then he majored Kaleb Owen (Perry) 12-0. In the finals he met his match in a 10-4 decision to State Qualifier Bam West (Edmond Memorial).

Josh Fincannon (6-1, 45-35) pinned Carson Cottrill (Stillwater) in 1:14 and Chubba Davis (Harrah) in 0:39, then won a 5-1 decision against Jesse McCaslin (Weatherford) and a 5-2 decision against Devin Harris (Owasso). In the finals he took State Qualifier Ryan Cochran (Claremore) to an ultimate tie breaker, where Cochran won 3-2 in a match that only featured escapes.

Brendon Wiseley (6-3, 58-23) pinned Rhylee Toepfer (Kingfisher) in 1:28 at 113 pounds and won an 11-2 major decision against Kaleb Kerr (Midwest City), but was pinned in 5:09 by Choctaw freshman Speedy Walden in the quarterfinals. He led 4-3 before giving up the fall. In consolation he pinned Ethan Kemble (Ponca City) in 2:56 and won a 5-0 decision against Angel Tiscarena (Perry) before falling 4-0 to Cooper Mahaffey (Yukon). He won the 5th place match by pinning Gabe Fontanez (Stillwater) in 3:14.

Brooks Dudley (3-3, 13-11) won his first match at 195 by pinning Spencer Lewis (Claremore) in only 27 seconds, but was pinned in turn by Matthew Santos (MacArthur). In consolation he won a 16-2 major decision against Jaxson Eichhorn (Vinita) before falling 2-1 to Chase Parham (Prosper).

Shane Wolf (2-1) took a 7-0 lead against Bixby’s Colby Holladay in the first round of 106 before pinning him in 3:27. He was pinned by Duncan’s Carson Villalon in the quarterfinals and by Choctaw’s Mason Hanna in consolation.

At 152 pounds Ethan White (2-3) pinned Chris Noble (MacArthur) in 3:56 before getting pinned in 1:24 by Gabe Johnson (Choctaw). In consolation he was defeated 9-7 in sudden victory overtime by Wallace Tilley (Yukon).

Chris Kirby (3-2, 61-26) wrestled at 160 pounds and pinned Josh Kime (Perry) in 2:10 before falling to Eli Cordy (Edmond Memorial) in 4:18. He forfeited his consolation match.

Chase White (1-4, 1-6) was pinned in 2:00 by Nathan Atwood (MacArthur) at 170 pounds. He pinned Gable Norman (Blackwell) in 2:10 in consolation before giving up a 5-1 decision to Tyson Walker (Duncan).

At 132 Caleb Phillips (1-3, 9-30) was pinned by Zach Blankenship (Bixby) in 1:05, then pinned Chris Pacheco (Perry) in 1:19 before getting pinned by EJ Tecson (Owasso) in 1:44.

Preston Medlin (2-2, 15-24) was defeated 2-0 by Dax Hughes (Stillwater) and 7-6 by Jaxon Flaming (Edmond Memorial) at 145 pounds.

Sango Whitehorn (1-2, 3-6) was pinned in 1:33 by Hunter Mauldin (Harrah) and in 0:48 by Jersey Robb (Bixby) at 182 pounds.

Heavyweight Robbie Parrish (2-2, 4-17) was pinned in 1:15 by Steven Culberson (Duncan) and in 4:10 by Brian Pifer (Vinita).

CPHS Basketball: Sandites throttle NW Arkansas 80-39, five score double digits

The Northwest Arkansas Hornets (1-6) were barely even a blip on the Sandites’ radar Saturday morning at the Tulsa Memorial Veterans Arena Invitational, as the undefeated Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (5-0) rolled to a lopsided 80-39 win, despite giving the backups more minutes than the starters. It marked the fourth time in the past five years that the Sandites have gone undefeated at the festival-style event.

The team was without Cason Savage and Daren Hawkins, and Costen Brockman picked up his first varsity start. The entire Sandite bench saw action, and the backups outscored the starters 49-31. Most of the Sandites logged minutes in the first half after they jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter lead, then scored 24-straight through the second and went into the locker room with a 46-12 advantage.

Sand Springs used a 13-point run in the fourth for its biggest lead of the game at 80-36 before giving up three in the final minute.

Arkansas’s Nick Kirkman led all scorers with 15 points, and Trevor Altemeier had 10 for the Hornets. Marlo Fox’s 13 points were his lowest output of the season, but it was enough to lead the Sandites for the fifth-straight game. Cale Askew was the tenth player off the bench, but he put up 12 points, followed by Davon Richardson, Jason Clark, and Trevor Stone with 10 apiece. Fourteen Sandites saw action and eleven made their way onto the scoreboard.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. with a Frontier Valley Conference road game against No. 17 Owasso (0-1). The Hornets will travel to Ozark Adventist (1-1) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Undefeated Sandites beat HFC Warriors 69-50, Fox scores 27

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School boys basketball team (4-0) continued their undefeated start to the season with a 69-50 win over the Hoops For Christ Warriors (6-5) Friday evening at the Tulsa Memorial Veterans Arena Invitational.

The Sandites are 13-1 over the past five years at the festival and are looking for their fourth undefeated record in that time span. They will play their final game Saturday at 11:00 a.m. against the Northwest Arkansas Hornets.

The Sandites jumped out to an early lead with a 15-5 first quarter and coasted to an easy win behind a 27-point career-high performance from junior standout Marlo Fox, who has led his team in all four games this season. University of Central Oklahoma-committed senior Davon Richardson put up 15 points as the only other Sandite in double digits, but seven players made their way into the scorebook.

HFC won the second quarter 20-17 to make it 32-25 at halftime, but the Sandites hit the gas and led by double digits for most of the second half. Jaeden Hurd scored 9, Josh Minney had 8, Daren Hawkins and Cason Savage scored 6 each, and Cale Askew added two in his varsity debut.

Traejon Davis paced the Warriors with 17 points, aided by Khiry Montgomery with 11 and Darius Dobbins with 10. Dmarius Dobbins and Tadrian Davis added 6 apiece.

HFC will play the Collinsville Cardinals Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites advance to Tournament Finals after OT win against Ada, Burris scores 14

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School girls basketball (3-1) is headed back to the Bishop Kelley Invitational finals for the fourth time in the past five years after a thrilling 48-46 overtime victory against 4A No. 17 Ada (3-1) Friday evening at the Bishop Eusebius J. Beltran Activity Center in Tulsa.

Sand Springs won three straight titles from 2015-2017 at the tournament, but settled for third place last year. They will play Saturday at 7:00 p.m. against the winner of 6A No. 18 Jenks (2-1) vs. 5A No. 17 Bishop Kelley (1-3).

Tatum Havens scored a three-pointer for the Cougars to open the game, and the Sandites didn’t take their first lead till a four-point run late in the quarter at 10-8. Havens bookended the period with another three for the lead.

Sand Springs got hot in the second period, winning it 13-7 for a comfortable 23-18 halftime advantage, but Ada ran away with things in the third thanks to an eight-point streak late in the period. Journey Armstead broke things up, but Amaya Frizell had the final say for the 32-31 lead.

Madison Burris put the Sandites back out front at 36-34 and they worked up a four-point lead, but foul trouble helped Ada close the gap to 38-37 with under three minutes to play. Jade Shrum hit a three, but Havens made a free throw and Landyn Owens scored on a steal to make it a one-point game with 26 seconds remaining.

Raegan Padilla made a free throw with 14.5 seconds left that stopped Ada from winning outright, but Owens tied it up with two seconds remaining to force overtime.

Havens put the Cougars up first, Burris drained a three for the lead, then Shayla Wofford gave Ada the penultimate lead. The Cougars played keep away to try and get off the final shot, forcing Burris to foul Alex Hamilton with 23.7 remaining. Hamilton missed both free throws and Armstead got the rebound, then sank a pair from the charity stripe to make it 47-46.

With seven seconds left Owens was called for traveling, and Frizell had to foul Burris to keep the game alive. Burris made one and missed the second, but Owens missed her corresponding desperation shot and the Sandites held on to the win.

Owens led all scorers with 15 points, closely followed by Havens and Burris with 14 apiece. Burris’s effort tied her career-high, and marked her first time leading the team. Armstead recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Hailey Jackson added 10 points with 6 boards.

Ada will play the loser of the Jenks vs. Bishop Kelley game Saturday at 4:00 p.m. for third place.
