CPHS Basketball Preview: Sandites host Sapulpa Friday in conference finale

Highway 97 Rivalry will return to Sand Springs Friday at 6:30 p.m. when the Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (17-4, 13-0) tips off against No. 18 Sapulpa (13-7, 9-3). The Lady Sandites will look to conclude the season undefeated in Frontier Valley Conference action.

The boys’ game, following the girls, will be a top-five match up as No. 4 Sapulpa (17-3, 10-2) looks to stay in contention for the FVC title by avenging a January loss to No. 5 Sand Springs (15-6, 9-4).

The Lady Sandites have the FVC title on lock with a 13-0 record, while the boys have been eliminated from contention at 9-4. The boys can’t finish any worse than fourth, and could still finish second pending the results of Sapulpa and Union’s final games. Last year the boys placed fourth with a 9-5 record while the girls finished third at 11-3.

Girls

The Sand Springs girls hold the No. 6 offense, No. 14 defense, and No. 10 margin of victory in Class 6A, winning by an average score of 60-48. They have won their past four games, most recently a 40-39 barn-burner against No. 18 Bixby.

Sapulpa is thirteenth offensively, sixth defensively, and eighth in margin of victory, winning by an average score of 55-44. The Chieftains have won six in a row, most recently a 62-52 upset of No. 8 Bartlesville.

Sand Springs defeated Sapulpa 45-43 on January 8th in what was the Sandites’ closest win of the season, prior to Tuesday’s game in Bixby. The Sandites were more accurate from both field goal ranges but the Chieftains came away with far more blocks and steals. The rebound battle was an even split. Holly Kersgieter led the Sandites with seventeen points and Taylor Dement led Sapulpa with sixteen.

Sand Springs hasn’t beaten Sapulpa twice in a season since 2011.

Boys

The Sandite boys are ninth offensively, seventh defensively, and seventh in margin of victory, winning by an average score of 63-53. They lost back to back games in their lowest offensive outputs of the season before drumming Bixby 79-51.

Sapulpa has the top offense in 6A, the No. 27 defense, and the third-highest margin of victory, winning by an average score of 77-63. The Chieftains have won three-straight games, most recently 64-58 against Bartlesville.

The Sandites won their first meeting 70-64 in Sapulpa, out-shooting their opponents 51% to 42% in the field and 71% to 50% at the stripe. Sand Springs won the rebound battle but Sapulpa got more takeaways. Both teams had four players in double digits. Cale Savage led the Sandites with seventeen points and Camryn Dennis had seventeen for Sapulpa.

Sand Springs is 5-5 against Sapulpa in the Eric Savage era, and have won their last three meetings. Sapulpa last defeated the Sandites in the 2017 Area playoffs.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites thump Bixby 79-51, Hurd scores 18

6’6” Sophomore Jaeden Hurd had a career night Tuesday, leading Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School (15-6, 9-4) to a 79-51 victory in Bixby (3-18, 1-12). The Sandite scored eighteen points and snagged eight rebounds at the Whitey Ford Sports Complex.

Sand Springs previously defeated the Spartans 84-43 last month, so Head Coach Eric Savage gave his second string far more game time on Tuesday. The boys only led 31-27 at halftime, but doubled the Spartans in both the third and fourth quarters.

Cale Savage was second among the Sandites with sixteen points, Cole Durkee added twelve, and Cason Savage had a career high eleven. Sam Anderson made his second appearance of the season and scored his first career three-pointer.

The teams were tied 13-13 after the first quarter, following a late three from Cason Savage. The Spartans led five times before Sand Springs went on a six-point run in the second period and never looked back. They tied it only once more, at 25-25, but Cale Savage hit back-to-back threes to end the half.

Things were still close midway through the third till the Sandites blew things wide open with an eighteen-point run spanning two periods. All eleven varsity players saw action for only the second time this season.

Xavier Glenn led the Spartans with seventeen points, Braden Weaver and Conner Loney scored eleven apiece, and Devin Crites added ten.

Sand Springs will wrap up the regular season Friday in the second installment of Highway 97 Rivalry. The Sandites will host No. 4 Sapulpa (17-3, 10-2) who they previously defeated 70-64 last month. Sand Springs is 5-5 against the Chieftains during the Eric Savage era, and have won their last three meetings. Sapulpa last defeated the Sandites in the 2017 Area playoffs.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites survive Spartans 40-39, Johnson scores 22

Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School (17-4, 13-0) had already clinched the Frontier Valley Conference title heading into Tuesday night’s game in Bixby, and they added to their perfect league record with a wild 40-39 victory over the No. 18 Spartans (12-10, 6-7) at the Whitey Ford Sports Complex.

Sand Springs had their lowest-scoring half of the season and trailed 19-12 before opening the third on a fourteen-point run. The teams hung tight from there till the craziest final seconds of the season.

Destiny Johnson scored the first basket but Kate Bradley gave her team the lead with a three. Holly Kersgieter sank a long three to tie it at 7-7 but Darrian Myles responded and the Spartans didn’t relinquish their lead again till the third period. Darrian Jordan also got on the board for the Sandites in that period but Myles hit another three for the 14-9 advantage.

The second was the lowest-scoring period of the season as the teams combined for only eight points: three from Johnson and five from Avery King. The Spartans took a 19-12 lead into the locker room as only the fifth team this season to win back-to-back periods against the Sandites.

Bixby shot 7-of-23 in the first half to the Sandites’ 5-of-23, and outrebounded their guests fifteen to twelve. Sand Springs struggled at the free throw line, hitting one of six.

Johnson went to work in the third, scoring six in a row to close the gap with a steal of her own and one from Isabella Regalado. Kersgieter pulled up for three and Johnson laid up twice more in transition before Bradley broke up the fourteen-point run.

The Sandites took a 32-26 lead into the fourth. Sydnee Schovanec hit back to back layups before Kersgieter got the visitors on the board, and Bradley sank a three to make it a one-point game. Johnson sank a pair of free throws and Kersgieter hit a two to make it 38-34 with a minute left. King laid up, Johnson and Kersgeiter added free throws, and Schovanec made a three to cut it to 40-39.

With only four seconds left Johnson and Schovanec went down in a nasty collision and the Sandite had the leave the game. Bixby got the ball and got off two shots in the paint but missed both. Savanna Stout was awarded two free throws with zero time on the clock, but missed both and the visitors survived by the skin of their teeth.

Johnson ended the night with a game-high 22 points, followed by Kersgeiter with thirteen. Bradley led the Spartans with eleven and King added ten.

Sand Springs will wrap up the regular season Friday in the second installment of Highway 97 Rivalry. The Sandites will host No. 18 Sapulpa (12-7, 8-3) who they previously defeated 45-43 last month. Sand Springs hasn’t beaten Sapulpa twice in a season since 2011.

The regular season is coming to an end, but there’s still three more weeks of basketball left for Sand Springs. Regional assignments have been released and both the boys and girls teams are both returning State Qualifiers, but first they have to wrap up their conference schedule with two more games.

Charles Page High School will travel to Bixby on Tuesday before hosting their Highway 97 rivals from Sapulpa on Friday.

The Lady Sandites have the Frontier Valley Conference title on lock with a 12-0 record, while the boys have been eliminated from contention at 8-4. Currently fourth in the standings, the boys could finish anywhere between second and sixth. Last year the boys placed fourth with a 9-5 record while the girls finished third at 11-3.

The Lady Sandites hold the No. 8 offense, No. 17 defense, and No. 8 margin of victory in Class 6A, winning by an average score of 62-48. They will tip off at 6:30 p.m. at Bixby’s Whitey Ford Sports Complex on Tuesday. The Lady Spartans are 20th offensively and tenth defensively, winning by an average score of 52-45. Sand Springs is on a three-game winning streak while Bixby is riding back-to-back losses. The Sandites previously defeated Bixby 58-35 in the first game of 2019.

The Sand Springs boys are twelfth offensively, seventh defensively, with the No. 7 margin of victory. They win by an average score of 63-53 but are coming off back to back losses, both their lowest-scoring performances of the season. The Spartans are 32nd offensively and 23rd defensively, losing by an average score of 60-46. They have also lost their last two games. Sand Springs previously defeated Bixby 84-43 in their highest-scoring game of the season.
