CPHS Basketball: Sandites undefeated in conference, beat No. 14 Booker T. Washington 65-60

It took a team effort, and it came down to the wire, but the Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (14-4) overcame No. 14 Booker T. Washington (11-6, 5-3) Tuesday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House to remain undefeated in Frontier Valley Conference action at 10-0.

The visiting Hornets jumped out to a 17-9 first period lead, but the Lady Sandites surged back for a 65-60 victory. University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter had her fifth double-double of the season with a game-high 22 points and thirteen rebounds. Destiny Johnson scored seventeen, Madison Burris had eleven, and Isabella Regalado added ten for the Sandites.

Wvette Mayberry gave the Hornets an early lead, laying up on a steal, then drilling a pair of threes before Burris got the Sandites on the board. Carrigan Hill and Armani Reed buried the home team with a double-digit deficit and Head Coach Tobey Nightingale benched the starters. Eleven Sandites saw action in the first period, but only one found her rhythm. Johnson got hot late in the quarter for two field goals and a pair of free throws, but the Hornets took a 17-9 lead into the second period.

Burris kicked off a thirteen-point run early in the second. She and Regalado hit back-to-back threes, then she and Johnson hit back to back layups to make it a one-point game. Kersgieter hit a free throw to tie it, missed the second, then gave the Sandites their first lead of the game thanks to a rebound from Burris. Amnisty Smith hit back to back baskets for the Hornets, but Burris put herself in double digits to close the half 25-24.

The third period was back-and-forth with five lead changes. Sand Springs went on a six point run and Darrian Jordan gave them their biggest lead of the game at 36-30. Mayberry went on a five-point run in retaliation, but Johnson took a steal coast-to-coast for a 38-35 advantage.

The fourth period was the most explosive stanza of the season with a combined 52 points. It was the third-highest scoring offensive performance of the season for Sand Springs, and the second-most points they’ve allowed. Despite that, they never once relinquished their lead, and had an answer for every Hornet sting. Kersgieter scored fifteen points in that period alone.

Mayberry led the Hornets with nineteen points and Reed had thirteen to put two visitors in double digits.

Six teams are still in contention for the conference title, but the Sandites have a large margin for error with a three-win lead on their closest competitors. With four games left on the conference schedule, they only have to win three more to clinch the title. Booker T. will need to win their remaining six games to have a chance at the title.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Broken Arrow (8-10, 2-7). The Hornets will play Saturday at 6:00 p.m. against No. 6 Bartlesville (13-3, 5-2) in the High School Hoops Showcase at the BOK Center.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites win Will Rogers Tournament with three champions

Braden Dahl and two other Sandites brought home gold from the Will Rogers Tournament.

The Sand Springs Junior Varsity Wrestling Team took first place this past weekend at the Morey Villareal Memorial Tournament. The Sandites sent seven to the finals and crowned three champions at Will Rogers High School.

The tournament featured nineteen teams, including eleven varsity programs, and the Sand Springs junior varsity bested all of them. The loaded Sandite roster even had enough talent to send a second JV team, which placed twelfth.

Dylan Luker won the 113-pound bracket and pinned all three of his opponents, including teammate KJ Clark who took second. Caleb Phillips placed first at 138 pounds with three falls, and Braden Dahl won at 160 with two falls.

Colton Luker came in Runner-Up at 106 pounds, picking up two first-period falls before going down in the finals. Nick Huelsenbeck placed second at 126 with one fall, and Joseph Mattison placed second at 132 with two pins.

Santana Naugle placed third at 182 and Thomas Naugle placed fourth with two pins. Sango Whitehorn placed fourth at 195, and Justin Smith placed sixth at 220 with one pin apiece. Ryder Barnes placed fifth at 120 with two falls, and had the fastest Sandite pin of the weekend in only thirteen seconds.

Javon Querns was the only Sandite to record a technical fall, and placed sixth at 106.

Sand Springs placed thirteenth out of 29 teams at the Edmond Junior High Tournament with 91.5 points. Bixby won the event with 256, followed by Choctaw with 209.5 and Tuttle with 173.5.

Mitchell Smith went 5-2 for fifth place at 89 pounds, losing only a pair of close decisions. He scored a 9-2 decision in the first round, then racked up four first-period falls in 0:58, 0:55, 0:30, and 0:18. In the placement round he pinned Yukon’s Krystian Moore.

Brooks Dudley placed fifth at 200 with a 4-2 record. He won an 11-3 major decision and pinned three foes in 4:19, 0:37, and 0:23. His only losses were 3-1 in an overtime tie-breaker, and 7-6 in the consolation semifinals.

Abraham Hernandez went 3-3 at 120 for sixth place. All three of his wins came by fall, in 3:32, 2:30, and 0:22. In the consolation semifinals he lost only 2-1 to Lawton MacArthur’s Calven Moore.

Cameron White failed to place at 106 but went 2-2 with a pair of falls. Ethan Norton failed to place at 113 but amassed a winning record of 4-2 . He lost his opening match to Raider Mackey but pinned two foes, scored a 15-0 technical fall, and a 6-4 decision. Zane Sheppard picked up a first-period fall at 132 before being eliminated.

Chase White went 3-2 at 140 with a fall, a major decision, and a medical forfeit. Cody Cramer went 3-2 at 150 with three decisions. Mason Harris won a 1-0 decision at heavyweight.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites place fourth at John Nobles Invitational, Johnson scores 21

The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (13-4) suffered a 53-43 upset Saturday afternoon at the hands of No. 12 Choctaw (13-4). The Sandites lost back-to-back games for the first time in over a year, settling for fourth place at John Nobles Invitational in Moore.

Sand Springs was without regular starter Jacie Taber, and the Yellowjackets had University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter double-manned for much of the game, holding her to a season-low six points.

University of Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson led the Sandites for the fifth time this season with 21 points, matched by Choctaw’s Aliyah Llanusa. Sophomore Reagan Padilla got her third start of the season, and three other young players saw significant game time.

The Sandites outrebounded Choctaw fourteen to four offensively, but struggled with accuracy, shooting only 33% to the Yellowjackets’ 46%. Choctaw was lethal from outside the arc with nine three-pointers.

Madison Burris gave the Sandites their first and only lead of the game with a three pointer at 5-4, and Johnson tied it up at 7-7 before the Yellowjackets went on a ten point run. Llanusa closed out the first period with back-to-back threes for a 15-7 advantage, and White opened the second period with a pair of free throws for their first double-digit lead.

Johnson made a three-point play to break up the Choctaw free for all, but the Yellowjackets rattled off nine more before sending Johnson to the line for two. The future Hurricane hit a layup from there and Isabella Regalado closed out the half with a three-pointer to make it 26-17.

Things didn’t improve in the third period and Llanusa kicked off a seven-point run with a three, followed by a pair of layups from Mackenzie Crusoe. Choctaw took their biggest lead of the game at 38-21 before Padilla got on the board with a three. Regalado got hot in the paint at the end of the period but the Yellowjackets took a 41-28 lead into the final stanza.

The fourth quarter was the only period the Sandites won, but Johnson’s last two layups came on defensive indifference in the final seconds and the Sandites never got to a single digit deficit.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday with a home game against No. 15 Booker T. Washington (11-4, 5-2) at 6:30 p.m. The Sandites are undefeated at 9-0 in Frontier Valley Conference action.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites fall 45-41 to No. 2 Norman North at Moore Tournament

Class 6A No. 2 ranked Norman North (15-1) managed to edge out No. 5 Charles Page High School (13-3) in the semifinal round of the John Nobles Invitational at Moore High School Friday afternoon, snapping a ten-game winning streak from the Sandites.

The Timberwolves held close leads after the first and second quarters but were dominated 12-4 in the third before clawing their way back to the front early in the fourth. Harding University-committed senior Jacie Evans scored the first eight points of the quarter to stymie the Sandite tide and lead her team to a 45-41 victory.

Jacie Evans and University of Kansas-committed Sandite Holly Kersgieter led all scorers with nineteen points apiece, and Kersgieter had twelve rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Jessika Evans was second for the Timberwolves with thirteen points and Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson added fifteen for Sand Springs.

It was a back and forth affair right out of the gate and neither team scored back to back field goals till Emma Base and Jacie Evans combined for a 12-7 advantage. Kersgieter quickly responded with a layup and two free throws for an eleven-point first period. Base knocked down two more from the stripe but Johnson laid up to keep it a one-point game, 14-13, at the end of the period.

Mikah Hampton scored in the paint to tie it up at 20-20 midway through the second. Jacie and Jessika Evans gave their team a  four point lead, then Kayton Kite hit a layup on a steal to take a 28-26 advantage into the locker room.

Both teams had trouble scoring early in the third, but Kennedy Cummings put the Timberwolves up by eight to start the half. Sand Springs battled back with a pair of free throws from Johnson and a three point play from Kersgieter. Isabella Regalado hit a long two and a free throw to tie it, and Johnson scored in transition for their first lead since the opening field goal of the game. Jacie Evans broke up the ten-point run, but Johnson hit two more from the stripe for a 34-32 lead.

Jacie Evans put her team back out front with a pair of free throws and a pair of layups to start the fourth, and Kite scored on a steal for a six-point advantage. Darrian Jordan broke up the run and Johnson hit a free throw to make it a one-score game.

The Timberwolves took a three-point lead into the final minute. Johnson scored again to make it 40-39, but Kite made a three point play that put the game out of reach. Johnson laid up again, Jacie Evans hit two from the stripe, and Norman North secured the 45-41 victory.

The Sandites have only lost three games this season, all non-conference. Their last defeat was also in the semifinal round of a tournament, when they fell 57-43 to still undefeated No. 3 Shawnee (14-0). Shawnee and Norman North were set to meet in the Bishop Kelley Invitational finals, but didn’t play the championship game due to winter weather.

Sand Springs will return to action Saturday at 4:00 p.m. when they play for third place against the loser of No. 8 Moore (12-3) vs. No. 11 Choctaw (12-3). Norman North will play the winner of Moore/Choctaw at 7:00 p.m.
