CPHS Basketball: John Nobles Tournament Preview

The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team is headed to the three-day John Nobles Tournament in Moore, Oklahoma this Thursday and is one of five ranked teams at the event. Four of those teams are top-ten, and No. 2 Norman North (13-1) is the favorite to win.

The Sandites are 12-2 overall, riding a nine-game wining streak, and haven’t lost since early December against No. 3 undefeated Shawnee. Most recently they won 74-56 over No. 19 Jenks (7-6). They have the second-highest scoring offense in Class 6A and the sixteenth-ranked defense, winning by an average margin of 15.1 points. Their average game is a 64-48 victory.

At their first tournament of the year Sand Springs placed third, falling to Shawnee in the Bishop Kelley Invitational semifinals and defeating No. 19 Jenks in overtime. They are led by first-year Head Coach Tobey Nightingale.

On Thursday the Sandites will play Southmoore at 7:00 p.m. The Sabercats are 5-9 with an offense ranked 27th in 6A and a defense ranked 21st. They placed third at the Bartlesville Invitational and are coming off a 52-41 win over Stillwater (4-11). Their average game is a 50-42 loss.

On Friday Sand Springs will play either Norman North or Durant (1-13). Durant is riding a seven-game losing streak and their only win was 58-39 over Nathan Hale (5-6). The Lions average 36 points and give up 60.

Norman North has battled through a loaded schedule recently, falling 50-48 to No. 6 Edmond North (11-4) and needing overtime in back-to-back games to beat No. 4 Edmond Memorial (11-4) and No. 8 Moore (11-3). Most recently they won convincingly 60-39 over No. 11 Mustang (14-2).

The Timberwolves hold the sixteenth-best offense and third-best defense in 6A, winning by an average score of 54-40. They won the Enid Holiday Classic last month and made it to the finals of the Bishop Kelley Invitational, but didn’t play the final game due to severe weather.

On the other side of the bracket is Moore vs. Douglass (9-6) and No. 12 Choctaw (11-3) vs. 3A No. 10 Millwood (13-2).

Moore rebounded from their 55-54 overtime loss to Norman North with a 51-41 upset of Edmond Memorial. They have the No. 7 offense and No. 6 defense in 6A, winning by an average score of 61-43, and won the Byng Tournament. Douglass is on a three-game winning streak but they haven’t upset a single ranked opponent this season. They win by an average score of 48-43, but already dropped a game 68-38 to Moore earlier this month. They placed fourth at both Ardmore and Byng.

Choctaw made it to the finals of the Harrah Tournament and won the Lady Jag Classic 53-37 over Midwest City. They then fell 67-60 to Midwest City in their very next game, and have won their last two over unranked opponents. The Yellowjackets hold the No. 5 offense and No. 7 defense in 6A, winning by an average score of 62-43.

Millwood placed fifth at the Hays City Shootout and second at the Christian Heritage Tournament. They are riding a seven-game win streak and win by an average score of 57-36.

The tournament will be held at Moore High School at 300 North Eastern Avenue, Moore, OK 73160. The gym is located on the south side of the school campus, facing south.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites knock off No. 6 Jenks 54-52, Richardson scores 21

Sand Springs won their second top-ten matchup of the season Tuesday night at the Frank Herald Fieldhouse, led by Davon Richardson with 21 points and Cole Durkee with seventeen. Class 6A No. 7 ranked Charles Page High School (13-4) improved to 7-2 in conference action with a 54-52 nailbitter victory over No. 6 Jenks (10-3, 5-3).

Jenks scored on their first three possession for a 6-0 lead before Durkee got the Sandites on the board. Marlo Fox was next to score and Cale Savage tied it at 7-7 with a three. Richardson gave the visitors their first lead with two from the charity stripe, and had to reclaim the lead twice more in the first period before his team finally began to pull away. Sand Springs ended the first period 17-13 on a six point run with a three from Durkee.

The Trojans came storming back in the second, taking a 22-20 lead with an eight point run. Richardson rattled off five of his own and Durkee hit a three for a narrow 28-26 halftime advantage. Jenks won the third period handily for a 42-35 lead, and the Sandites trailed to start the fourth period for only the fifth time this season.

Three pointers from Savage and Durkee kept the game tight and Josh Minney scored on a steal to reclaim the lead at 47-46. Chase Martin and Savage exchanges twos and the Sandites entered the final minute with possession and a one-point advantage. They drained off seventeen seconds with a game of keepaway before the Trojans sent Fox to the line for two.

Richardson sent Peyton Golightly to the line with 13.7 seconds but the former Sandite only hit one of his two shots, and Durkee made a three-point play on the corresponding possession. Ike Houston hit a long three with 3.4 seconds left to keep the Trojan’s hopes alive. Tristan Hines picked off the Sandites’ corresponding inbound throw and made a pass to the basket, but Golightly missed the layup and the Sandites secured the victory.

The Sandites will get a week-long break before hosting Broken Arrow (5-8, 2-6). Jenks will compete at this weekend’s Jenks/Union Invitational tournament with a 5:00 p.m. Thursday match against No. 16 Putnam City North (7-8).

CPHS Basketball: Sandites Trump Trojans 74-56, Kersgieter scores 23

It was a high scoring affair Tuesday night at the Frank Herald Fieldhouse. Jenks Junior standout Makenna Burch scored a game-high thirty points, but it wasn’t enough. Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School (12-2, 9-0) rolled over No. 19 Jenks (7-6, 4-4) to remain undefeated in Frontier Valley Conference action thanks to double-digit efforts from three players.

University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter led the Sandites with 23 points, followed by University of Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson with nineteen. Northeastern State University-commit Isabella Regalado had her first double-double of the season with seventeen points and twelve rebounds in the 74-56 victory.

Burch scored the opening three-pointer for Jenks, her first of eight on the night. Kersgieter scored a three for the Sand Springs lead, then Trinity Jackson rebounded to tie it. That was the closest the Trojans would get for the remainder of the evening. The Sandites went on a seven point run and never relinquished their lead. Burch’s third three-pointer put the Trojans within a goal of Sand Springs at 16-13, but Kersgeiter hit five in a row en route to a twelve-point first quarter performance and a 25-19 Sand Springs lead.

The second period was the Destiny Johnson show as the future Hurricane totaled eleven points for a 41-29 halftime advantage. Burch was an ever-looming threat, however, with 21 points by halftime.

Jenks rallied to start the third period with seven straight points, five from Rylie Watson, but the visitors scored a seven point run of their own to make it 51-38. Regan Padilla made her way into the scorebook to the close the third period at 58-43. Regalado hit a pair of threes in that stanza for a double-double before the fourth even started.

Once again the Trojans tried to claw their way back into it, and back to back threes from Burch and Haley Meely cut their deficit to 62-51, but Regalado scored a three of her own to kick off an eight point run. Padilla scored two more before Coach Tobey Nightingale pulled her starters with a 72-53 lead. Darrian Jordan hit a pair of free throws for their biggest lead at 21 points.

The Sandites will return to action Thursday at 7:00 p.m. against Southmoore (4-10) in the first round of the John Nobles tournament at Moore High School.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites place eighth at Ram Duals, fall 55-18 to Kansas State Champions

Freshman Christian Forbes was the team’s leading scorer with four pins and a tech fall. His only loss was to a nationally-ranked State Champion.

The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (12-4) has taken a beating this past week and settled for eighth place out of fourteen teams at the Fourth Annual Ram Duals Saturday afternoon in Owasso. The Sandites were four starters short of a healthy roster and fell 55-18 to the defending Kansas 5A State Champions, No. 1 Goddard.

The Lions kicked off the dual with four straight falls. State Qualifier Cayleb Atkins pinned Dakota Taylor (0-7), State Qualifier Nolan Craine pinned Braden Dahl (8-9), State Qualifier Trevor Dopps pinned Chris Kirby (27-9, 49-19), and State Qualifier Cayden Atkins pinned Riley Magee (12-11, 17-16) for a 24-0 lead.

Freshmen were the stars of the show for Sand Springs. All three of the Sandites’ wins came by first-period falls at the hands of freshmen. Kaden Glass (24-8) pinned JD Bridwell in 0:33 to get the Sandites on the board, and Brooks Dudley (8-4) pinned Garrett Mead in 0:51 to make it 24-12. State Qualifier Trent Willert pinned Josh Fincannon (22-16, 36-33) at heavyweight, but Christian Forbes (20-7) responded by pinning Jayden Miller in 1:06.

The Lions won five out of the last six weight classes. State Champion Jason Henschel pinned Brendon Wiseley (24-11, 38-19), State Finalist Lucas Glover pinned Dylan Luker (6-9), and the teams double forfeited 126. Logan Davidson won a 5-4 decision against Blake Jones (18-10), State Qualifier Isaiah Holmes pinned Caleb Phillips (5-15, 7-22), and State Qualifier Jace Fisher won a 12-0 major decision against Preston Medlin (12-17) to conclude the day.

Sand Springs Wrestling will return to action Thursday at home against undefeated No. 7 Jenks (7-0). The Trojans haven’t beaten Sand Springs since 1997, but their program is the strongest it has been in years, setting the stage for what should be a good matchup.
