CPHS Wrestling: Sandites rout Union 55-18, Weir picks up 100th career win

The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team improved to a 5-0 record Thursday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, dominating No. 11 Union (3-2).

The Sandites won ten out of fourteen matches, nine of which came with bonus points. Sand Springs recorded six falls, two technical falls, and received a forfeit in the 55-18 smackdown.

Freshman Christian Forbes (11-5) made quick work of Tayton Gwatney at 106 pounds, scoring a takedown just ten seconds into the match. One more takedown late in the first and Forbes rolled the Redskin for a pair of back points and a 6-1 lead. He started the second period with an easy escape and added five more back points, then secured the 17-1 technical fall with a takedown at 4:26.

Brendon Wiseley (12-7, 26-15) was next up with a takedown in only twelve seconds against Jarrod Gilliam. He racked up a 13-0 first period lead with eleven back points before reversing for the tech fall at 2:21. The win shattered the previous school record for fastest tech fall at 113 pounds.

Two-time State Champion Riley Weir (9-5, 100-31) received a forfeit at 120 for his 100th career win.

Seth Jones (9-4, 31-18) was first to score in his 126 match against Verdell Schoats, but Schoats escaped and scored his team’s first takedown soon after. By the end of the first period they were tied 3-3, but Jones came up with a 10-5 lead in the second before sticking his foe at 3:57.

Blake Jones (10-7) took a 3-0 lead with a reversal early in the third period against Caleb Rogers before pinning the Redskin at 5:30 for a 28-0 team lead.

Preston Medlin (7-11) battled Chris Dugger at 138 and took a 2-1 lead in the first period. Dugger started the second on top and earned a pair of back points late in the period. Medlin looked to have a reversal shortly before the third period buzzer but Coach Jarrod Patterson’s argument fell on deaf ears and Dugger was awarded the 3-2 decision to put Union on the board.

Scott Patton (14-1, 49-23) worked up a 6-0 lead against Cooper Gibson in the first period at 152. Patton reversed to start the second, gave up a reversal, then reversed again for back points. He led 15-4 before finally pinning the Redskin at 3:57.

Chris Kirby (15-6, 37-16) gave up an early reversal to Shane Fields at 160 but quickly jumped out to a 9-3 lead before notching his eleventh pin of the season at 1:47. The win put Kirby at the front of the team in falls.

Gavin Koehler took control of Braden Dahl (2-1, 3-4) early in their match at 160, but the Sandite reversed for his first pin of the season at 1:48.

Riley Magee (5-3, 10-8) let Jake Rogers score first at 182, but made it 2-2 with a second period escape. Rogers brought down Magee with an inside trip late in the period but the two traveled out of bounds and started the third all tied up. Rogers reversed, Magee escaped, and it came down to the wire, but he couldn’t get a shot off in the final seconds and Rogers held on for the 4-3 decision.

Freshman standout Kaden Glass (12-5) upset State Qualifier Elijah Tomlin at 195. Glass scored takedowns in the first and third periods for a 5-2 decision.

Josh Fincannon (13-9, 27-26) had the biggest win of the dual, pinning State Qualifier Darius Booner in only 35 seconds.

Union’s only bonus points of the night came from State Qualifiers Jalen Hernandez and Micah Walker. Hernandez pinned Caleb Phillips (1-5, 3-12) in 2:26, and Walker pinned Justin Smith (0-1) in the Sandite’s varsity debut. Smith shocked the crowd with a big throw early in the match that briefly put the Redskin in hot water, but the more experienced wrestler came out on top and ultimately pinned Smith in 2:30.

The junior high won their dual 55-19.

The Sandites will return to action Friday morning at the Jerry Billings Invitational in Sapulpa. Top teams at the event include nationally-ranked No. 18 Broken Arrow, 5A No. 1 Collinsville, and 3A No. 2 Comanche.

Weir is a defending two-time tournament champion and the only returning champion on the Sand Springs squad. Last year Seth Jones came in runner-up, Kirby took third, Patton placed fourth, Riley Magee finished fifth, and Fincannon placed ninth. The team came in second last year and won the tournament the year before.

9X State Champion Cheyenne Walden transfers from OSU to Grand Canyon University

Cheyenne Walden, the most decorated athlete in Charles Page High School history, recently announced her decision to transfer from Oklahoma State University to Grand Canyon University for the Spring 2019 semester. She will be immediately eligible to compete in the Spring season.

Walden won nine individual State Championships in her time at Sand Springs. She won the State Cross Country meet from 2013 through 2016, the 3200-meter track meet from 2015 through 2017, and the 1600-meter track meet in 2016 and 2017.

Walden signed with the OSU Cowgirls in high school and immediately began competing as a true freshman. She ran in five cross country meets, finished fifteenth at the Big 12 Championships, and 27th in the NCAA Midwest Regional. She earned All-Big 12 honors and was an NCAA qualifier.

In the Spring track season she placed third in the one-mile run at the Texas Tech Corky Classic and competed in the one-mile and 3,000 meter runs at the Big 12 Championships.

Walden also took up steeplechase this past season and won 2,000 meter title at the Tulsa Duels. She placed top ten in six races and earned All-Big 12 honors in the 3,000 meter race.

Grand Canyon University is a private Christian university in Phoenix, Arizona. The Antelopes compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Western Athletic Conference. They are the defending WAC Outdoor Track Champions, and have won three straight WAC Indoor Championships. They finished sixth in the WAC Cross Country Championships.

Youth Wrestling: Sandites crown one champion and one runner-up at US Junior Open Championship

Thirteen members of the Sand Springs Team Big wrestling program competed at last weekend’s U.S. Junior Open Championship and seven earned medals in the tough youth event. The Sandites crowned one National Champion and one Runner-Up, and tied for 53rd place out of 193 clubs.

Kason Waag won the Novice A division at 37 pounds. He pinned Ike Payne in 2:00, majored Kolton Drew 11-1, and decisioned Anthony Salazar 6-4 and Channing Bowman 5-4.

Adrian Flores came in runner-up at 140 pounds in Open Division 4. He pinned Kayson Smith in 2:37, Tucker Winkle in 2:18, and Beck Danielson in 4:07. His second match was a 6-0 loss to Jacob Cook, but he won out with a 12-4 major decision against Chase Graham, an 11-3 major decision against Larry Cole, and a 7-0 decision against JD Sigman.

Jayden Bussell placed fifth at seventy pounds in Open Division 2. He pinned Eli Cadena in 3:35 and defeated Bryar Hooks 4-3 before dropping a pair of close decisions. In the placement round he pinned Taven Thrash in only 25 seconds.

Jaxon Grigsby placed fifth at 61 pounds in Open Division 3. He pinned Kamdon Von Holten in 1:57, Zechariah Tecumseh in 1:24 and Sam White in 0:34. He lost a 6-4 decision to Jace Reed and a 3-2 tie-breaker to Revin Flipps, but topped Randen Wright 1-0 in placement.

Zander Grigsby placed fifth at 73 pounds in Open Division 4. He lost decisions of 3-0 to Cori Brown and 4-0 to Dylan Bratt, but defeated Brynton Handshy 12-3, Toby Shipman 5-1, and pinned Max McDaniel in 2:33.

Aiden Rhine placed fifth in Novice B at ninety pounds with a 6-2 decision over Aiden Young and a pin of Ace Coker in 0:17.

Ethan White placed sixth at 140 pounds in Open Division 5. He majored Tyler Gibson 9-1 and Tanner Jones 11-1, and pinned Benjamin Mower in 0:51 before dropping his final three matches.

Jaxon Trotter failed to place in Open Division 4, but won his first two matches 14-4 against Matthew Snyder and 5-0 against Mason Armstrong before dropping a pair of close decisions.

Nah Denison came up short of placing in Novice A, but pinned Mason Clemons in 0:47 and Tj Keenom in 1:52.

Tyler Feigenbaum competed in Novice C and recorded a 16-0 technical fall against Austin Steffler before being eliminated.

Five Team Big wrestler’s skipped the USJOC and competed at the Catoosa Tournament, bringing home five medals with one champion and two runners-up.

Cameron White placed first at 113 pounds in Division 5. He pinned Andrew Lollis in 3:00 and majored Zander Payne 20-6.

Ethan Williams came in runner-up at 49 pounds in Beginner 1, pinning Max Bozone in 2:42 and defeating Brayden Otero 8-6 in sudden victory overtime. He lost to Catoosa’s Reid Alexander in the finals.

Cooper Nicholas placed second at 105 pounds in Beginner 2. He pinned Tad Dillard in 0:37 and Grant Riley in 1:53, but fell 4-2 to Kage Gorczynski. He also placed fourth in Beginner 3, pinning Titus Mitchell in 1:51.

Jordan Satoe failed to place in Beginner 2, but did pick up an impressive 41-second pin against Ben Brady.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites steamroll Sapulpa 69-6, Junior High beats Bixby 43-31

While the Sandite basketball teams were battling out a couple of hard-fought barn burners in the field house next door, the Sandite wrestling team secured their Highway 97 Rivalry win with ease Tuesday evening at the Sapulpa High School gym.

All three Charles Page High School teams won their bouts with the Cheiftains, but the No. 5 ranked wrestling team absolutely dominated Sapulpa 69-6 to improve to 4-0 on the season, while their foes fell to 0-5.

Sapulpa voided five weight classes, giving up thirty free points to their rivals. Colton Luker (106), Brendon Wiseley (113), Seth Jones (126), Braden Dahl (160), and Thomas Naugle (195) all received forfeits.

Sand Springs won eight of the remaining nine matches, including four first-period falls. Riley Weir (120) pinned Colton Parrish in 0:19, Chris Kirby (170) pinned Tanner Boren in 0:47, Riley Magee (220) pinned Brandon Holland in 1:37, and Josh Fincannon (285) pinned Blake Brooks in 1:17.

Joseph Mattison won a 14-6 major decision over Justin Campbell at 132 pounds for a 28-0 lead before the Chieftains put their first and only points on the board. Luke Young pinned Jared Jenkins in 1:53 in the Sandite’s varsity debut to avert the Sandite shutout.

Preston Medlin (145) decisioned Simon Young 9-2, Scott Patton (152) majored Colt Konell 13-4, and Santana Naugle (182) majored Payton Malone 8-0.

Sand Springs will return to action Thursday at 7:00 p.m. when they host No. 11 Union (3-1). The Sandites and Chieftains will meet again Friday at the Jerry Billings Invitational.

The Junior High squad also won their Tuesday night dual 43-31 against Bixby. Kaden Glass, Brooks Dudley, Cody Cramer, Chase White, Blake Jones, Carter Goodman, Cameron White, and Mitchell Smith all picked up wins.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites win Highway 97 Rivalry 45-43, improve to 6-0 in conference

The Highway 97 Rivalry never fails to thrill, and the Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School girls basketball team (9-2, 6-0) played a barn burner against No. 19 Sapulpa (5-4, 2-2) Tuesday evening on the Chieftains’ home court. 

Sand Springs won only one period against their arch rivals, but that first period lead was just enough to keep the Sandites undefeated in conference action with a 45-43 victory. The teams tied in the second and fourth periods, and the Chieftains won the third, but came just a hair short of the upset. 

The Sandites struck first, scoring on a three-pointer from Madison Burris on their second possession. Isabella Regalado scored in the paint on a pass from Jacie Taber and the visitors were up 5-0 before the Chieftains ever left their half of the court. 

Taylor Dement kickstarted the Sapulpa offense, scoring three of the Chieftains’ first four field goals, and the home team hung close till the end of the first period. Taber made a three-point play on a foul, Holly Kersgieter scored on a layup, and the Sandites ended the quarter 20-12.

The second period wasn’t even half as explosive as the first, and the two teams tied 7-7. Johnson and Kersgeiter scored back to back to start the stanza, expanding their streak to nine, before Ray Osborn and De’Asia Thomas undid that damage. Kersgeiter responded with her first three-pointer of the night, then De’Shawnti Thomas scored in the paint and Dement hit a free throw to end the half 27-19. 

The Chieftains came out hot in the second half with a ten point run for their first lead of the game. Kersgieter tied it with a pair of free throws and Regalado hit her first three for the lead, but Zoey Mason and Temire Poindexter put the Chieftains back out front. Johnson and Dement traded layups and the lead, but Burris sank a three moments before the buzzer to start the final stretch 37-35. 

Both teams gave up three straight turnovers to start the period before Kersgeiter scored two. Dement drilled a three to make it a one-point game, but Burris and Johnson hit back-to-back deep balls for a seven-point cushion with 2:37 to play. That advantage wouldn’t last for long. 

Osborn scored two, Dement iced a long three, and the Sandites only led by two. They ran two minutes off the clock in a game of keep-away, but Johnson missed a free throw and the Chieftains rebounded with 24 seconds left to keep the game alive. Dement shot a long three with ten seconds left, but Johnson came up with the rebound to secure the win. 

Kersgieter led all scorers with seventeen points, closely followed by Dement with sixteen. They were the only players from either team to score in double digits. The game was the second-lowest scoring of the season for Sand Springs, and the lowest scoring win.  

Sand Springs will return to action next Tuesday at No. 9 Union (8-0, 5-0). The Chieftains will compete in the Westmoore Jaguar Classic, beginning with a Thursday battle against No. 17 Ponca City (4-3).

CPHS Basketball: Boys knock off No. 4 Sapulpa to remain undefeated in FVC

In the biggest win of his six-year stent at Sand Springs, Eric Savage’s Sandites knocked off the Class 6A No. 4 Sapulpa Chieftains 70-64 on the road to remain undefeated in Frontier Valley Conference action.

The No. 6 Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (12-2, 6-0) is now the only undefeated team left in the conference and is well on their way to what could be their best season in decades.

Sand Springs won the first three quarters against their Highway 97 rivals and the two teams tied in the fourth. The Chieftains fell to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in conference action. Their only other loss was 78-77 to the number two team in Mississippi.

Josh Minney and Marlo Fox gave the visitors a 4-0 lead to start the game but Jacoby Durant and Camryn Dennis quickly tied it. Davon Richardson took the lead for Sand Springs, Julian Smith took the lead for Sapulpa, then the Sandites went on a seven point run, capped by a bucket from Cason Savage. Smith tied it at 13-13, then gave his team a brief 17-15 lead, but Cale Savage sank a three to end the first period up by one.

The second period started hot for the Sandites with their second seven point run for a 29-21 lead, but the Chieftains responded with a seven point run of their own. A free throw from Richardson sent the visitors into the locker room with a narrow 30-28 advantage. 

Dennis briefly tied it to start the third, Fox laid up and Cale Savage hit two from the stripe, but a pair of three pointers from Hunter Hoggant tied it once again at 36-36. It was back and forth from there till the Sandites went on a six point run to make it 47-38. A pair of threes from Jayde Duncan evened things out, but Cale Savage launched a buzzer beater for the 52-46 advantage.

The fourth quarter saw heavy foul trouble for both teams, but the Chieftains had the worst of it, landing themselves in the double bonus with more than three minutes left. Ten of the Sandites’ eighteen points came from free throws in that period.

Smith laid up on a steal to cut it to 68-64 with 47.8 remaining. Dennis missed a one-and-one with 25 seconds left, but the Chieftains got the ball back right away when Richardson’s pass flew completely out of bounds. Cale Savage came up clutch with a steal and two freebies to make it 70-64 with 16 seconds left. Duncan got off one last three-point shot for the Chieftains, but it bounced off the rim and Durkee secured the rebound and with it, the game.

Cale Savage and Dennis led their respective teams with seventeen points apiece. Richardson had a double-double with sixteen points and eleven rebounds. Minney added fifteen point and Fox had thirteen to put four Sandites in double figures. The Chieftains also had four double-digit scorers. Dennis was aided by Smith with twelve, Duncan with eleven, and Durant with eleven.

Sand Springs will take a week off before battling No. 10 Union (4-2, 3-1) next Tuesday on the road. The Chieftains will have a week to reflect on their loss before trying to snap back against Bixby (1-6, 0-5).
