CPHS Basketball: Sandites place second at Duncan Invitational, Heritage Hall wins 26th-straight

Class 4A No. 2 ranked Heritage Hall (8-0) won their 26th-straight game Saturday night at the Duncan Holiday Invitational, edging out 6A No. 8 Sand Springs 64-57 in the tournament finals. The Sandites dropped to 9-2 on the season and came in Runner-Up for the second time in three years.

Sand Springs led by one at the half and only trailed by two to start the final stretch before the defending State Champions finally pulled away.

Both of the Sandites’ losses this season came with missing starters against Championship-caliber teams, and they are undefeated in both Frontier Valley Conference and Class 6A action. Josh Minney was absent during Saturday’s seven-point loss. The 6’4” junior averages 9.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest this season and is a crucial cog in the vertically-challenged Sand Springs machine.

The Chargers took a 12-10 lead in the first quarter with eight points from Trey Alexander, a sophomore with more than a dozen NCAA Division I offers. Senior forward Will McDonald contributed four points in the stanza. Four Sandites made it on the board in that period.

The Heritage offense stalled out in the second period with only three field goals, while junior standout Davon Richardson scored eight points for a thirteen-point first half. Cale Savage scored a three-pointer and Daren Hawkins added two for the 23-22 advantage.

Sand Springs scored seventeen points in both the third and fourth periods, but the Chargers scored twenty in the third and 22 in the fourth. Jack Spanier got hot in the third with two three-pointers, but McDonald and Alexander were the bulk of the Charger offense, combining for 49 points.

Foul trouble was a heavy contributor to the loss as the Sandites out-fouled the Chargers 24-17. Both Richardson and 6’6” sophomore Jaeden Hurd fouled out in the fourth period, but not before scoring seven points apiece in the second half.

Alexander led all scorers with 25, followed by McDonald with 24, but only five Chargers made their way into the scorebook. Six Sandites put points on the board, led by Richardson with twenty and Savage with fourteen.

Sand Springs will kick off the new year with a return to Conference action, taking on Bixby (1-4, 0-3) Friday at 8:00 p.m. at the Ed Dubie Field House. The Sandites lead the Frontier at 4-0 thus far.

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (9-1) is headed to the Duncan Holiday Tournament finals for the second time in three years after knocking off 5A No. 4 Northwest Classen (7-3) Friday evening.

Junior standout Davon Richardson scored a season-best 26 points in the 83-69 victory. The game was the Sandites’ biggest offensive output of the season and four players scored in double digits.

The Sandites were over 80% at the free throw line for the third-straight game and were 17 of 21 on Friday. They also got in foul trouble in the fourth period with both Savage and Hurd fouling out.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites place 28th at Kansas City Stampede, Weir takes 6th

The Charles Page High School varsity wrestling team traveled to the Kansas City Stampede this weekend and placed 28th for a slight improvement over the previous year’s finish. Though they didn’t crown a champion for the first time in five years, they did perform better as an overall team than last season.

Daton Fix won four-straight titles at the tournament from 2013 to 2016, then freshman Carter Young won the tournament last year. Young transferred to Stillwater this year and went 8-1 for fifth place in the tournament. His only loss was 5-2 to tournament runner-up Caleb Tanner of Collinsville.

Riley Weir placed sixth, Josh Fincannon placed eighth, Kaden Glass placed tenth, Brendon Wiseley placed twelfth, Chris Kirby placed thirteenth, Preston Medlin placed 22nd, Dylan Luker placed 28th, and Seth Jones placed 32nd. The team finished with 199 points. Last season they scored 188 points for 29th place.

This year’s team has outscored last year’s squad in both tournaments and two out of three duals. If that trend continues it will mean a great post-season for the Sandites, who finished third in the Regional and Class 6A State Championship tournaments last season.

Nationally ranked No. 12 Tuttle won the Stampede with 686 points, four finalists, and three champions. Liberty, Missouri placed second with 619.5 points and one champion, upsetting No. 22 Park Hill who settled for third with 449.5.

3A No. 1 Perry placed fifth and 5A No. 2 Collinsville placed twelfth as the top-two teams from Oklahoma. Sand Springs was the highest-scoring 6A team, followed by unranked Southmoore with an upset over several 6A teams at 29th. No. 11 Stillwater placed 30th. 5A No. 8 Coweta placed 31st, 6A No. 9 Ponca City placed 32nd, and 6A No. 4 Edmond North placed 37th.

Sand Springs wrestling will return to action after the new year at the 18th Annual Cushing Invitational. It will be their first time competing at the event. The Sandites previously traveled to the prestigious Geary Invitational that weekend for the past three years.

He majored Mill Valley State Finalist Zach Keal 9-1, then avenged his loss to Rocha with a fall in 5:08. In the semis he pinned Missouri State Champion Karter Brink (Monett), but was defeated 2-0 by Park Hill freshman Kal Miller, a Missouri Junior High State Champion. Weir placed twelfth last season.

He then fell 5-1 to Kansas State Qualifier Ethan Kremer (Mill Valley) and 4-3 to Missouri State Qualifier Zane Persinger (Neosho).

Kaden Glass (7-4) was pinned by Tuttle State Champion Carson Berryhill in the opening match, and Berryhill would go on to win the tournament. Glass bounced back from his first career loss handily, setting the school record for quickest pin at the 195-pound weight class with a fall against Park Hill’s Christopher Bizzle in only fifteen seconds. He also pinned Goddard’s JD Birdwell in 0:43.

In the gold bracket Glass suffered a 4-2 loss to Missouri State Champion Brian Boyd of Smithville, but defeated Alabama State Qualifier Alex Ward (Thompson) 14-8. He trailed Lebanon’s Landen Smith 10-1 before injury defaulting, then pinned Kearney’s Colt Post in 0:58 before falling 3-2 to Missouri State Qualifier Blake Fritz of Seckman.

Brendon Wiseley (10-7, 24-15) went 3-1 in pool play to earn his way into the 106-pound gold bracket. He scored technical falls of 16-0 and 18-2 against Edmond North’s Garrett McBride and Tyler Bierman of Holt, Missouri, and pinned Omaha Skutt freshman and Nebraska Junior High State Champion Zach Ourada in 1:19. His only loss was a 3-1 sudden-victory overtime decision to Kearney, Nebraska’s Eli Ashcroft.

NCAA Wrestling: Undefeated freshman Daton Fix wins Reno Tournament of Champions

Charles Page High School Class of 2017 graduate Daton Fix has continued his undefeated career at Oklahoma State University with a second-consecutive Reno Tournament of Champions title, improving to 17-0 as a redshirt freshman.

Fix racked up eleven takedowns in a 24-9 technical fall against Cal Baptist sophomore Vince Zavala in only 6:26, and led Oregon State sophomore Devan Turner 12-3 before the Beaver was disqualified with four stalling penalties. In the quarterfinals he teched Old Dominion junior Steven Simpson 18-2 in only 2:52 with three takedowns and twelve nearfall points.

In the semifinals Fix took on former teammate, North Carolina senior Gary Wayne Harding, who, like Fix, was a four-time Oklahoma State Champion in high school. The Cowboy scored takedowns in all three periods for a 10-2 major decision.

In the finals Fix easily easily handled two-time NCAA qualifier, Michigan State senior Anthony Tutolo with four takedowns for a 10-4 decision.

Oklahoma State won the team title with seven champions and 204.5 points. Nick Piccinini (125), Kaden Gfeller (149), Chandler Rogers (165), Jacobe Smith (174), Dakota Geer (197), and Derek White (285) secured titles for OSU while Dustin Hone (149), Jonce Blaylock (157) and Joseph Smith (174) settled for silver. Michigan State placed second with 150.5 points and one champion.

Last month Fix knocked off 2017 NCAA Finalist No. 8 Ethan Lizak 6-1 in a dual with Minnesota, then won 3-0 against No. 12 ranked All-American Montorie Bridges from Wyoming.

Two weeks ago the Cowboys dominated Oklahoma 41-2 in their biggest Bedlam win in 26 years. Fix teched Anthony Madrigal 20-5 in 6:27. In their latest dual the Cowboys blanked Northern Colorado 47-0, aided by a 16-1 Fix tech fall against Sean Cannon, a three-time Nevada State Champion.

Oklahoma State is currently ranked No. 3 in the country with a 5-0 overall record and 4-0 Big Twelve record. FloWrestling has Fix ranked seventh in the 133-pound weight class.

The Cowboys will return to action January 1st at the Southern Scuffle tournament in Chattanooga, against powerhouse programs like No. 1 Penn State, No. 7 NC State, and No. 14 Virginia Tech. No. 4 Tariq Wilson, No. 10 Austin Gomez, No. 17 Roman Bravo-Young, and No. 20 Sean Nickell could all present tough competition for Fix at that event.

On the horizon for Fix is a potential matchup with No. 2 Nick Suriano when the Cowboys travel to No. 25 Rutgers (6-1) after the new year. The two set the world record for longest high school folkstyle match at the FloWrestling Who’s Number One event in 2014. Suriano ultimately won 3-1 at the 31:12 overtime mark.

CPHS Wrestling: Undefeated Sandites thump Stillwater 40-17

The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team improved to 3-0 on the season with a dominant 40-17 win against No. 10 Stillwater (2-2) Tuesday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House.

Sand Springs won nine matches to five, and picked up falls at three weight classes.

The Sandites got off to a hot start, winning their first four matches before Stillwater won the biggest showdown of the night.

Christian Forbes (7-2) decisioned Gabe Fontanez 9-6, Brendon Wiseley (6-2, 20-10) pinned Henry Warren in 2:20, Dylan Luker (1-1) received a forfeit, and Seth Jones (6-2) won a 13-4 major decision against Cade Nicholas for a 19-0 Sandite lead.

The hottest match of the season thus-far pitted two-time State Champion Riley Weir (1-1, 92-28) against sophomore State Champion Carter Young. Young went 40-1 last season as a Sandite, but transferred to Stillwater over the summer. In only his second match of the season, Weir took a 2-0 lead with a first period takedown, but Young tied it up in the second period and added two more takedowns in the third for a 6-4 decision.

Freshman Blake Jones (7-1) got the Sandites back on track with a 10-4 decision over Skylar Lancaster, but Dax Hughes won a 7-3 decision for the Pioneers over Caleb Phillips (1-4, 3-11).

Scott Patton (8-1, 43-23) edged out Tanner Robinson 8-6, and Chris Kirby (6-2, 28-12) topped Brett Black 5-4, but Christian McCutcheon secured Stillwater’s only fall in 2:49 against Braden Dahl (0-1, 1-4).

Riley Magee (4-2, 9-7) made easy work of Devin Alcantara, taking a 9-0 lead into the second period with three sets of back points. He added two more takedowns and a trio of nearfall points before pinning his foe in 3:53.

Freshman standout Kaden Glass (3-0) pinned Camron Kirker in only 1:09 after scoring three takedowns against the Pioneer.

Robbie Parrish (0-3, 2-15) held tough against State Qualifier Sam Smith, but gave up an escape in the third period for a 1-0 loss.

Both teams will return to action Friday at the Thirteenth Annual Kansas City Stampede. Sand Springs placed 29th last year at the prestigious event and the program’s best finish was third place in 2016. They will face teams like Nationally-ranked No. 12 Tuttle and No. 22 Park Hill, as well as 6A No. 4 Edmond North, 5A No. 2 Collinsville, and 3A No. 1 Perry. Carter Young is the only returning tournament champion from either team.
