CPHS Basketball: Johnson/Kersgieter combine for 48 in 64-51 win over Jenks

Charles Page High School junior standouts Destiny Johnson and Holly Kersgieter combined for 48 points Tuesday night to help the Class 6A No. 13 ranked Lady Sandites (14-7, 10-3) overcome a feisty opponent in the Jenks Trojans (11-11, 6-7).

Sand Springs got off to a rough start and struggled with both height deficit and turnovers, giving up a season-worst 43 rebounds and sixteen steals, but out-shot their foes 51% to 24% to secure the 64-51 Frontier Valley Conference victory.

Jenks came ready to play, scoring first on a Haley Meely layup. Johnson responded two possessions later, but Emma Wasson hit a free throw. Johnson made one of her own to tie it, then Jacie Taber added another to take the lead once and for all.

Taber followed it up with a field goal and a steal to create momentum for the Sandites who went on a nine-point run before Meely hit a three. Madison Burris immediately returned the favor, and Taber made it 16-6 to close the first period.

Meely kicked off the second period, the Sandites rattled off five, Rylie Watson made two, then Kersgieter hit her first field goal of the night. By the end of the half the Sandites held a double-digit lead at 29-17.

The Trojans cut it back to manageable with a putback from Watson and a three pointer from Meely. Johnson scored four to sandwich a pair of Kersgieter free throws, but Trinity Jackson went on a three-point run and Meely posted two more to keep it close.

The Trojans won the third quarter 14-10 to stay in contention. The final stanza was the highest scoring for both teams, but Kersgieter led the way with twelve points for the thirteen point victory.

Johnson led all scorers with 26 points and twelve rebounds, followed by Kersgieter with 22 points and eleven rebounds. Meely led the Trojans with sixteen points, followed by Jackson with eleven and Makenna Burch with ten.

The Sandites will close Frontier Valley Conference action Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Bishop Kelley High School (5-16, 2-11) who they topped 64-43 in the season-opener. Jenks will try to repeat a January 64-53 win over No. 19 Sapulpa (11-11, 6-7).

CPHS Basketball: Sandites top Jenks 65-52 on Senior Night, Savage scores 25

University of Central Oklahoma-committed senior Colt Savage scored 25 points to lead the Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School boys' basketball team (15-6, 8-5) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House. The home team overcame a rough start and first-quarter deficit to hand Jenks (8-14, 3-10) a 65-52 loss on Sandite Senior Night.

The unranked Trojans jumped out to an 8-0 lead with a handful of offensive rebounds and a pair of steals before Savage got the Sandites on the scoreboard. Eli Harris scored six en rout to a 10-2 lead before the Sandites found their mojo.

Cole Durkee drilled a three, Savage scored five more, and the Sandites trailed 13-10 to start the second quarter. The Trojans pushed their advantage to 23-16 before Savage hit a two and Durkee scored eight-straight to end the half with back-to-back threes and back-to-back free throws.

The third period was another Sandite win as they pushed their lead to 43-38, but the Trojans actually tied it up at 35-all midway through before Savage went on a five-point run. Ike Houston made a free throw and Jalen Woods hit a three, but Durkee closed out the period with a three-point play.

The game stayed close through most of the fourth until Cale Savage got hot with seven of his nine points in the final minutes. The Sandites ended on a six-point run to notch their second victory of the season over the Trojans.

Colt Savage led all scorers, followed by Durkee with sixteen points and a team-high eight rebounds. Three Trojans made double digits. Harris and Blake Seacat posted twelve apiece, closely followed by Woods with eleven.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 8:00 p.m. when they wrap up Frontier Valley Conference play at 5A No. 10 Bishop Kelley (10-11, 4-9), who they previously defeated 45-44 in the season-opener. Sandite of the Week: Davon Richardson scores 44 at No. 8 Owasso

6'4" Charles Page High School sophomore Davon Richardson pulled off one of the most remarkable performances in school history Friday night in Owasso, recording 44 points in a 97-77 loss to the eighth-ranked Rams (17-4, 9-3).

The tally was the first forty-point performance for a Sandite in several years and left his previous career best (24) in the dust.

What's more impressive than the points is how he got them. Only four came from free throws and he scored forty on field goals while shooting 70.8%. He started even hotter than he finished, going 17-of-20 before missing his final four attempts of the night. He also secured three offensive rebounds, five defensive rebounds, and two blocks.

Richardson paced the tenth-ranked Sandites (14-6, 7-5) with nine points in each of the first two periods, eleven in the third, and fifteen in the final stanza. He was 6-of-8 from three-point range with four of those coming in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter. At the rate he was playing he could easily have posted fifty, but came out of the game halfway through the fourth to give the second string minutes.

The Sandites will return to action Tuesday with an 8:00 p.m. home game against Jenks (8-13, 3-9) in their final appearance of the season at the Ed Dubie Field House. They will play Jenks again on Friday the 23rd in the first round of the Regional Playoffs at Putnam City West.

CPHS Basketball: No. 3 Owasso hammers Sand Springs 61-35 at BOK Center

The Class 6A No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School girls' basketball team (13-7, 9-3) suffered their worst defeat in three years at the Third Annual High School Hoops Showcase Saturday night. The No. 3 Owasso Rams (18-3, 9-3) shut out the Sandites 17-0 in the first period at the BOK Center and rode that success to a 61-35 Frontier Valley Conference victory.

Jacie Taber posted the first Sandite points with a pair of free throws and a field goal to start the second quarter, then Madison Burris added a free throw. The Rams immediately retaliated with six points of their own, Destiny Johnson got in on the action, Burris hit the first three for the Sandites, then Owasso went on an eleven point run before Taber hit another free throw to end the half 36-13.

The third quarter was the closest as both teams scored ten apiece, including six from University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter. Kersgieter led her team with ten points, but Tiya Douglas led all scorers with 25.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday when they host Jenks (11-10, 6-6) at 6:30 p.m. Owasso will host No. 19 Sapulpa (11-10, 6-6).

CPHS Basketball: Davon Richardson scores 44 in 97-77 loss at No. 8 Owasso

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School boys' basketball team (14-6, 7-5) was soundly defeated 97-77 in an unusually high-scoring affair at No. 8 Owasso (17-4, 9-3) Friday night, despite an incredible 44-point performance by 6'4" sophomore Davon Richardson.

The game kicked off like a replay of their last game as the Sandites jumped out to a quick lead with back-to-back layups from Richardson. Hayden Peterson got the Rams on the board with a free throw, but Matt Price made a three-point play for the 7-1 lead. Jake Thompson hit a pair from the charity stripe and Josh Proctor made the first Owasso field goal, Richardson retaliated, then Thompson hit a three to make it a one-point game.

Seth Pomeroy gave his team the lead once and for all with a steal and a layup. Proctor snagged four more off back-to-back steals and the Rams successfully flipped the script. Richardson hit two from the stripe, but Proctor made one of his own, then blocked a shot from Price and Thompson scored on the rebound.

The Rams rode an eight-point streak to a double-digit lead before Colt Savage scored back-to-back. Peterson got the final say of the first quarter, hitting a buzzer-beater for the 24-16 advantage.

Cole Durkee made a three-point play to kick off the second period, but Pomeroy hit a two and Thompson sank a three for another double-digit lead. The Rams ran away with it from there with five three-pointers for a 55-33 halftime advantage. Richardson and Thompson had eighteen points apiece in the first half alone.

Proctor hit a three to give his team a 25-point lead to start the third, Richardson scored a three of his own, Peterson added two, then the Sandites went on a five-point run to cut it back to nineteen. The game stayed in that vicinity for most of the quarter till Thompson iced a buzzer beater to make it 77-53.

Richardson continued his melee in the fourth quarter with three threes and a two in the first three minutes, cutting the deficit to seventeen points for the first time since the second period. Owasso had a quick answer in Preston Hendrix who came off the bench for back-to-back threes. Richardson hit yet another three and followed it up with a free throw for his final point of the night.

No matter how hot the Sandites got, the Rams always had an answer. With three minutes left the Sandite called it a night and sent in the backups, who actually cut the deficit to seventeen with a 9-2 run before the Rams hit the final two baskets of the night.

Richardson's 44 points were the most any Sandite has scored in several seasons, and a massive improvement on his previous career-high 24. He also collected eight rebounds and two blocks. Colt Savage was the only other Sandite in double digits, scoring twelve. Thompson paced the Rams with 29, followed by Proctor with eighteen, Peterson with seventeen, and Pomeroy with twelve.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 8:00 in their last home game of the season against Jenks (8-13, 3-9) who they previously defeated 64-45 in January. Owasso will aim to repeat a 67-65 victory over No. 13 Sapulpa (13-8, 5-7) Tuesday at home.
