CPHS Basketball: No. 3 Owasso hammers Sand Springs 61-35 at BOK Center

The Class 6A No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School girls' basketball team (13-7, 9-3) suffered their worst defeat in three years at the Third Annual High School Hoops Showcase Saturday night. The No. 3 Owasso Rams (18-3, 9-3) shut out the Sandites 17-0 in the first period at the BOK Center and rode that success to a 61-35 Frontier Valley Conference victory. 

Jacie Taber posted the first Sandite points with a pair of free throws and a field goal to start the second quarter, then Madison Burris added a free throw. The Rams immediately retaliated with six points of their own, Destiny Johnson got in on the action, Burris hit the first three for the Sandites, then Owasso went on an eleven point run before Taber hit another free throw to end the half 36-13.

The third quarter was the closest as both teams scored ten apiece, including six from University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter. Kersgieter led her team with ten points, but Tiya Douglas led all scorers with 25. 

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday when they host Jenks (11-10, 6-6) at 6:30 p.m. Owasso will host No. 19 Sapulpa (11-10, 6-6).

CPHS Basketball: Davon Richardson scores 44 in 97-77 loss at No. 8 Owasso

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School boys' basketball team (14-6, 7-5) was soundly defeated 97-77 in an unusually high-scoring affair at No. 8 Owasso (17-4, 9-3) Friday night, despite an incredible 44-point performance by 6'4" sophomore Davon Richardson.

The game kicked off like a replay of their last game as the Sandites jumped out to a quick lead with back-to-back layups from Richardson. Hayden Peterson got the Rams on the board with a free throw, but Matt Price made a three-point play for the 7-1 lead. Jake Thompson hit a pair from the charity stripe and Josh Proctor made the first Owasso field goal, Richardson retaliated, then Thompson hit a three to make it a one-point game.

Seth Pomeroy gave his team the lead once and for all with a steal and a layup. Proctor snagged four more off back-to-back steals and the Rams successfully flipped the script. Richardson hit two from the stripe, but Proctor made one of his own, then blocked a shot from Price and Thompson scored on the rebound.

The Rams rode an eight-point streak to a double-digit lead before Colt Savage scored back-to-back. Peterson got the final say of the first quarter, hitting a buzzer-beater for the 24-16 advantage.

Cole Durkee made a three-point play to kick off the second period, but Pomeroy hit a two and Thompson sank a three for another double-digit lead. The Rams ran away with it from there with five three-pointers for a 55-33 halftime advantage. Richardson and Thompson had eighteen points apiece in the first half alone.

Proctor hit a three to give his team a 25-point lead to start the third, Richardson scored a three of his own, Peterson added two, then the Sandites went on a five-point run to cut it back to nineteen. The game stayed in that vicinity for most of the quarter till Thompson iced a buzzer beater to make it 77-53.

Richardson continued his melee in the fourth quarter with three threes and a two in the first three minutes, cutting the deficit to seventeen points for the first time since the second period. Owasso had a quick answer in Preston Hendrix who came off the bench for back-to-back threes. Richardson hit yet another three and followed it up with a free throw for his final point of the night.

No matter how hot the Sandites got, the Rams always had an answer. With three minutes left the Sandite called it a night and sent in the backups, who actually cut the deficit to seventeen with a 9-2 run before the Rams hit the final two baskets of the night.

Richardson's 44 points were the most any Sandite has scored in several seasons, and a massive improvement on his previous career-high 24. He also collected eight rebounds and two blocks. Colt Savage was the only other Sandite in double digits, scoring twelve. Thompson paced the Rams with 29, followed by Proctor with eighteen, Peterson with seventeen, and Pomeroy with twelve.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 8:00 in their last home game of the season against Jenks (8-13, 3-9) who they previously defeated 64-45 in January. Owasso will aim to repeat a 67-65 victory over No. 13 Sapulpa (13-8, 5-7) Tuesday at home.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites throttle Bixby 75-6 with eight pins

The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (13-3) secured their biggest win of the year at Tuesday night’s Homecoming dual, recording eight pins in a 75-6 rout of Bixby (0-10).

Brendon Wiseley (13-7, 14-7) received a forfeit at 106, Carter Young (33-1) pinned Aidan Kirkland in 39 seconds, and Seth Jones (23-12, 25-15) pinned Jacob Burdette in 23 seconds for an 18-0 lead.

Blake Sargent (10-4, 99-29) took on Ainsley Lane in the only match of the night that went the distance. He recorded a takedown in the first period and a reversal in the second. He spent most of the match working on a pin before changing strategy midway through the third and trying to score points. He scored two more takedowns in the final minute but was held to a 10-3 decision.

Irwin Portillo (25-16, 31-21) restarted the pinning streak, finishing off Gavin Southern in 1:10. Scott Patton (23-16, 30-18) pinned Braden Bickle in 1:23, Colby Heckencamp (3-4) pinned Derek VanDyke in 2:58, Chris Kirby (17-6) pinned Ryan Statler in 24 seconds, Kaleb Tabor (20-10) pinned Christian Brylewski in 1:25, and Dayvon Taylor (17-17) pinned Andrew Plumlee in 2:42.

Chad Moore picked up the only points of the night for Bixby by receiving a forfeit at 182. Josh Fincannon (10-4) received a forfeit at 195, Gage Fain (16-7, 55-45) received a forfeit at 220, and Robert Parrish (3-11) received a forfeit at heavyweight to end the night.

The dual was the last of the year for Bixby, who will return to action at the Regional Tournament Friday the 16th in Broken Arrow.

The Sandites will travel to Firelake Arena in Shawnee this Friday to take on No. 4 Mustang (18-3) at 6:00 p.m. in the Dual State Championship quarterfinals. The Sandites are the defending Dual State Champions and won 25 straight duals before falling 43-25 to No. 1 Broken Arrow (9-1) in January.

CPHS Basketball: Boys fall 53-34 to No. 4 Union, Savage scores 19

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (14-5, 7-4) went on the road to No. 4 Union (16-4, 9-2) and suffered a 53-34 defeat despite a game-high nineteen-point performance from University of Central Oklahoma-commit Colt Savage.

Ira Richardson drew first blood for the Redskins, Colt Savage made a three-point play for the Sandites, then Michiah McQuarters sank a three to reclaim the lead. Cole Durkee, McQuarters, and Davon Richardson scored twos, then McQuarters hit another three for the 10-7 lead.

McQuarters reached double digits in under five minutes and rattled off seven-straight points to double the visitors at 14-7 before Davon Richardson scored two on an inbounds. Noah Brown and Jordan Flood pushed the advantage to 20-9 by the end of the first quarter.

Brown scored on a steal to kick off the second quarter, Savage ended the streak with a free throw, and that was the only point the Sandites would score. The Redskins won a conservative 8-1 quarter and took a 28-10 advantage into the locker room.

Savage scored on a steal to start the third quarter, Garcia drained a three, then Savage laid up for two more. Flood added two, then Gage Fisher made his way into the scorebook with a three. Savage followed it up with a three of his own to cut it to a thirteen-point deficit and the two teams hung tight from there.

The Sandites had stopped hemorrhaging but couldn’t make up much ground, finishing the third 42-29. The fourth was another low-scoring affair and the Redskins came out on top, limiting the Sandites to a handful of points from Savage and securing a 53-34 victory.

Savage was the only Sandite in double digits. McQuarters led the Redskins with sixteen, Garcia had eleven, and Brown added ten.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 7:00 p.m. on the road against No. 8 Owasso (16-4, 8-3). The Sandites won a 72-64 December meeting, but the Rams will be riding high after upsetting No. 1 Broken Arrow (17-2, 9-1) 77-70. Union will travel to No. 13 Sapulpa (13-7, 5-6) Friday at 8:00 p.m. with the hope of avenging an 81-80 overtime loss from earlier this season.

CPHS Basketball: Girls overcome Union 49-37, Johnson scores 23

It wasn’t a perfect game, but the Class 6A No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (13-6, 9-2) utilized a fast start and a fourth-quarter resurgence to overcome Union High School (6-13, 3-7) Tuesday night on the road.

The Redskins scored first on a layup from Idalis Ortiz, but that was their only lead of the game. Isabella Regalado sank a three and Destiny Johnson hit two from the charity stripe to take the lead once and for all. Kimi Presnell hit a three, Johnson scored two more from the stripe, and Jacie Taber scored on a putback for a 12-7 advantage. Ortiz added another basket, then the Sandites went on an eight-point run to close out the quarter 20-9.

Union found momentum in the second quarter, riding an eight-point run into the second half to cut it to 25-19. The visitors led by as much as fourteen before the Sadie Moyer hit a pair of free throws to end the third quarter 36-31.

The home team may have won the middle two quarters, but the Sandites won the bookends and got back out front with a seven point run in the fourth before Moyer scored the only three of the night for Union. Kersgieter and Johnson combined for six more before Kaylen Nelson ended the game with a free throw.

The Sandites shared scoring duties in the first quarter with five players making their way in the book, but Kersgieter and Johnson were responsible for all 39 points in the next three periods. Johnson led all scorers with 23 points, while Moyer led the Redskins with fifteen. Kersgieter was the only other player in double-digits, putting up fourteen.

Sand Springs will return to action Saturday at the BOK Center with a 6:30 p.m. game against No. 3 Owasso (16-3, 7-3). The Sandites won the first meeting 49-42, but the Rams were missing key players at the time and are currently riding a seven-game streak. Union will travel to No. 19 Sapulpa (11-9, 6-5) Friday at 6:30 p.m. to try and avenge a 53-33 December loss.
