CPHS Wrestling: Sandites topple defending Arkansas State Champions

The defending Oklahoma 6A State Champions and the defending Arkansas 7A State Champions went head-to-head in the first round of the 3rd Annual Ram Duals Friday afternoon. Oklahoma came out on top as the Charles Page High School Sandites (9-1) defeated Bentonville High School 39-28 for their fourth-straight dual victory.

State Champion Riley Weir (16-6 season, 78-24 career) took an 8-2 lead on Blake Wolff before pinning him in 2:14, and Sand Springs never once trailed.

Seth Jones (17-11, 19-14) took a 7-0 lead with two sets of nearfall points in the first period, then reversed for six more back points in the second for the 15-0 technical fall against Quinn Graves. 

Colten Roberts (3-4) scored early on State Qualifier Obi Smith and was working on a pin when the first period ended. He started the second period up 5-0, but Smith reversed and pinned the Sandite in 2:35. 

Irwin Portillo (20-14, 26-19) scored first on Raphael Marascio and started the second period on bottom with a 2-0 lead. He escaped soon after and picked up two more points for stalling to start the third period up 5-0. In the final stretch he scored a trio of takedowns and finished with a 12-2 major decision.

State Qualifier Gabe Holley took down Scott Patton (19-14, 26-16) almost immediately but the Sandite reversed once in the first period and again to start the second with a 4-2 lead. He added a takedown in the third for the 6-2 decision. 

Colby Heckencamp (2-4) took on State Qualifier Zane Sims and barely escaped a first period fall as time expired. Sims reversed late in the second and worked up a 9-0 lead before pinning the Sandite in 5:19.

State Qualifier Isaiah Yorba took down Chris Kirby (13-3) first, both reversed, then Yorba reversed again in the second period for a 6-2 lead. Kirby reversed with 25 seconds left and started the final stretch on bottom, trailing 6-4. He escaped early and scored a takedown for the pin in 5:04. 

Kaleb Tabor (15-8) scored on State Qualifier Nathan Desler then gave up a reversal to start the second period 2-2. He started on top and scored nearfall points but Desler reversed to tie it up once again and start the first period 4-4. Tabor reversed for the lead and held on for a 6-4 decision. 

Dayvon Taylor (14-13) scored on State Champion Cash Jones, but Jones quickly escaped for a takedown of his own with back points. Jones started the second period up 6-2 and escaped for another takedown. Taylor managed an escape, but Jones took him down once again to make it 11-3 at the start of the final period. A trio of nearfall points gave the Tiger a 14-3 major decision. 

Noah Almy (3-2, 27-22) scored nearfall points on Liam Neal to start the second period up 5-0. Neal escaped and the two stayed neutral through the remainder. Almy scored a takedown in the third, cut the Tiger lose, and took him down again for a 9-2 decision.

Josh Fincannon (7-10) took down State Qualifier Jeremiah Fry and started the second period down with a 2-1 lead. He reversed to make it 4-1, then gave up an escape in the third period and held on for a 4-2 decision. 33-16, 18

The Sandites forfeited 220 to Alex Crowe, then Ethan Crowe pinned Robbie Parrish (0-8) in  45 seconds to cut it to 33-28 with one match left.

Freshman standout Carter Young (26-1) secured the victory for the Sandites with a pin of State Qualifier Josiah Scates in 2:42.

Sand Springs will next take on the host team, 6A No. 11 Owasso (2-6), while Bentonville will wrestle Lebanon, Missouri. The Sandites are the defending Ram Dual Champions.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites win District Championship with 57-15 win over Bartlesville

The defending 6A Dual State Champions punched their ticket to Shawnee Thursday night with a 57-15 victory over Bartlesville. The fifth-ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (8-1) won their district quad and will get to compete at Firelake Arena in February.

The dual started off with a battle of the Joneses as Sandite Seth Jones took on Bruin Laif Jones. Laif scored the lone takedown of the first period, started the second on top and rode till the end, then added an escape to start the third period. A takedown later and the Bruin secured a 5-0 decision. Brayden Strachan quickly took down Colton Roberts and pinned the Sandite in 1:40 for a 9-0 Bruin lead.

Irwin Portillo got Sand Springs on the board with a major decision over Kamren Parra. He scored a takedown in the first period, then escaped for a takedown and nearfall points in the second for a 7-1 lead to start the third. Back points in the final period made it 13-3.

Scott Patton gave up an early takedown to Ashton Reder but quickly reversed for a fall in 1:28 to take the lead at 10-9.

Colby Heckencamp took on Reed Blackard at 145 and the two were evenly matched with a scoreless first period. Blackard escaped to start the second period, but Heckencamp scored a takedown with three seconds remaining for the lead, then added a reversal and nearfall points early in the third and held on for a 6-2 decision.

Brody Lawson took down Chris Kirby right away, but Kirby reversed and pinned his foe in 1:29 to make it 19-9.

160 was a battle of Kalebs between Tabor and Childress, and the Sandite came out on top with an 11-2 lead and a plethora of back points in the first period. Tabor reversed in the second period and worked up a 15-3 lead before pinning the Bruin in 3:49.

Dayvon Taylor and Austin Manley stalemated through the first period at 170 but Taylor reversed in the second and pinned his opponent at 2:34 for the 31-9 lead.

Noah Almy took down Blake Buoy and pinned the Bruin in 1:19. Josh Fincannon immediately scored on Lukas Hammack and pinned him in 1:33 to clinch the dual at 43-9.

Gage Fain received a forfeit at 220. Robbie Parrish took on Rylan Reynolds at heavyweight and was pinned in 2:54. Carter Young worked up a 12-4 first period lead on David Boucher and ultimately teched the Bruin 21-6 in 3:39.

Defending State Champion Riley Weir took on Corwin Strachan and had his work cut out for him. They stalemated through a scoreless first period before the Sandite scored a takedown in the second and rode out the clock. He reversed in the third and held on for a 4-0 decision.

The Sandites will return to action first thing Friday morning at the Third Annual Ram Duals in Owasso. 

CPHS Wrestling: No. 5 Sandites dominate No. 13 Muskogee 66-12 with six pins

The defending State Champion wrestling team from Charles Page High School (7-1) won their second-straight district dual Tuesday evening against No. 13 Muskogee (5-3). The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Sandites won twelve of fourteen matches and recorded six pins in the 66-12 victory. 

The dual started off at 113 pounds and defending State Champion Riley Weir wasted no time in building an 8-2 lead against William Caraway before pinning the Rougher in 1:23.  Seth Jones was nearly as dominant, pinning Joseph Birmingham in 1:31. Colten Roberts improved on both their times and pinned Hunter James in 33 seconds for an 18-0 lead.

Keonte Arnett survived the first two periods against Irwin Portillo, but the Sandite readily worked his opponent over for near fall points on multiple occasions and led 8-0 to start the final stretch. He ultimately prevailed by 11-1 major decision to make it 22-0.

Christian Webb took down Scott Patton early in their match, but Patton won a reversal and started the second period all tied up. Webb added a reversal of his own, then Patton reversed again for a trio of nearfall points. He added two more back points and entered the final period on bottom with a 9-4 lead. Patton reversed immediately, Webb reversed soon after, then Patton reversed again to end the match 13-6.

Colby Heckencamp took on Jacob Church at 145 and the two stalemated through the first period. Heckencamp reversed in the second period and added back points for a 7-0 lead before Church reversed for a fall at 3:55 to get the Roughers on the board.

Chris Kirby scored early on Josh Campbell but the Rougher escaped and scored a takedown of his own. The two tied up at 5-5 early in the third period but Kirby reversed for a pin at 2:47. Kaleb Tabor received a forfeit at 160 to make it 37-6.

Dayvon Taylor scored first on Mason Seth and took a 4-0 lead, then both wrestlers reversed. Taylor added nearfall points and started the final stanza neutral with a 9-2 lead. He almost immediately took the Rougher down for back points and worked his way towards a 17-2 tech fall in 5:30 to clinch the dual.

Noah Almy received a forfeit, Riley Magee pinned Zamor Hardaway in 57 seconds, then Josh Fincannon received forfeit to make it 60-6.

Robbie Parrish took on Jacob Wood at heavyweight and fell into a 16-2 hole by the end of the second period. They started the third period neutral and the Rougher pinned Parrish in 4:33.

Carter Young finished off the dual at 106 by pinning Rashaan Brownlee in 1:36, taking a 16-4 lead before finishing off his foe.

Sand Springs will next take on unranked Bartlesville (3-6) in the final round of the district quad. If Sand Springs wins the dual they will advance to the Dual State tournament in Shawnee this February. 

CPHS Wrestling: No. 5 Sandites throttle No. 15 Enid 55-18 in District Duals

After seeing their 25-straight win-streak come to a close against Class 6A No. 1 Broken Arrow Tuesday night, the defending State Champions from No. 5 Sand Springs (6-1) bounced back with a dominant 55-18 win over No. 15 Enid (4-5) in the first round of the District Duals Quad. 

Brendon Wiseley received a forfeit at 106 pounds and the Sandites never trailed. Defending State Champion Riley Weir handily scored a 19-2 technical fall in 3:36 against Dae Stuber and Seth Jones pinned Austin Hisey in 53 seconds for a 17-0 lead.

Colten Roberts took an 11-1 lead into the second period against Jenbwij Nathan, quickly escaped, and took down his foe for a 17-1 tech fall in 2:45.

Irwin Portillo took on a tough competitor in Logan Herrell and the two traded points for a 6-5 first period shootout with the Plainsman on top. Portillo jumped out front in the second period, however, and scored a trio of nearfall points for the definitive lead. By the end of the third he had surged ahead for a 19-10 major decision. 26-0.

Scott Patton battled Hunter McGee at 138 pounds and the Sandite struck first with a takedown near the end of the first period. The second period went heavily in Patton’s favor and he started the final stretch with a quick reversal for nearfall points and ultimately won a 19-3 technical fall in 5:58 for the 31-0 lead.

Chris Kirby took on CJ Franks and gave up an early takedown before pinning Franks in 53 seconds. Kaleb Tabor followed Kirby’s lead and stuck Logan Griffin in 1:00 to make it 43-0.

Chase Masterson managed to avert the shutout by topping Jasanee Harjo 9-3 at 160 pounds to make it 43-3. Dayvon Taylor wasted no time in taking down Tyler Holland and pinned his foe at 1:04.

Noah Almy gave up a takedown and nearfall points to Lincoln Sefcik, who led 5-0 after a second period escape. Almy scored his first points midway through the period, but Sefcik quickly escaped and started the third period neutral with a 6-2 lead. Ultimately the Plainsman prevailed 8-3.

Josh Fincannon scored a pair of first period takedowns against Augie Pritchett and added another early in the second before pinning his opponent in 2:37. Brock Anderson received a forfeit at 220 to make it 55-12, then Robbie Parrish fell in 2:38 to Colten Dodd. 

Sand Springs will take on No. 13 Muskogee (5-2) and unranked Bartlesville (3-5) next. Bartlesville upset the Roughers 39-36 in the first dual of the evening. The four teams will wrestle a round-robin and the best record will advance to the Dual State Tournament at Shawnee's Firelake Arena this February.

CPHS Wrestling: Colton Roberts wins Inola Tournament, Junior Varsity places fifth

Chris Kirby placed second at the Inola Wrestling Tournament.

The Charles Page High School Junior Varsity wrestling team recently competed at a tournament in Inola and took fifth place in a field that included many varsity squads. 

Colton Roberts (9-2) took first place at 126 pounds, pinning Jacob Myers (Skiatook) in thirteen seconds and Ayron Lawson (Perkins-Tryon) in 5:35. In the finals he won an 8-6 decision over Blake Skidgel (Pawnee).

Chris Kirby (8-5) came in runner-up at 152 pounds. He pinned Ty Fixin (Tahlequah Sequoyah) in 4:53 and majored Reiley Lawson (Morris) 18-8, then received a medical forfeit from Jon McGowan (Hulbert). In the finals he was pinned by Whitt Fletcher (Vian).

Caden Vaughn (7-3) placed third at 113 pounds, winning three of his four matches by fall. He pinned Gavin Stuass (Hulbert) in 43 seconds in the quarterfinals before falling 9-1 to State Qualifier Jackson Cockrell (Broken Arrow). In consolation he pinned Bailey LaMont (Inola) in 2:36 and Tristen Butler (Stilwell) in 3:23.

Riley Magee (4-3) was fourth at 182 pounds. He pinned Noah Bennett (Tahlequah Sequoyah) in 4:24 and Jacob Surber (Bishop Kelley) in 4:00 before falling 8-3 to Kade Cato (Vian). In consolation he scored a 15-0 technical fall against James Ballinger (NOAH) in 5:49 but fell 3-2 in a tie-breaker against Zeke Rozell (Broken Arrow).

Preston Medlin (7-7) placed fifth at 145 pounds. He lost his opening match 6-4 to Kenny Scott (Okmulgee) in sudden victory overtime, but defeated Jayden Carlock (Stilwell) 9-3 and pinned Cameron Toothman (Morris) in 4:48 before falling 7-5 to Deion Mesa (Tahlequah Sequoyah). In the placement round he received a forfeit from Christian Jones (Vian).

Thomas Naugle (8-6) placed fifth at 160 pounds. He pinned Paine Suter (Morris) in 2:54 and won a 7-6 decision over Drake Leybas (Inola) before falling to Rustin Martin (Tonkawa) and Preston Ardery (Perkins-Tryon). In the placement round he received a forfeit from Brett San Miguel (Locust Grove).

Youth Wrestling: Dariuz Black, Kaden Pope, Henry Hill win Team IceFighter Tournament

Eight members of the Sand Springs Team Big wrestling program competed at the Team IceFighter Tournament in Tulsa recently and three brought home first-place medals.

Dariuz Black (7-1) won his second-straight tournament in Division Four at 92 pounds. He pinned Walker Upton (Tuttle) in 57 seconds and scored a 7-2 decision against Cael Eremita (Catoosa).

Kaden Pope (5-2) won the 64-pound bracket in Division Three easily, scoring a 16-1 tech fall against Kason Delgado (OWA), and pinning Ari Jones (Claremore) in 46 seconds.

Henry Hill (2-0) won the Division Three Novice 64-pound bracket, majoring Urah Hooks (Oologah) 11-2 and pinning Andrew Xiong (Oologah) in 0:32.

Ethan Norton (5-8) placed second in Division Five at one-hundred pounds. He fell 3-2 to Allison Hynes (Broken Arrow), but defeated Cameron White (Sapulpa) 10-5.
