CPHS Wrestling: Sandites fall 43-25 to No. 1 Broken Arrow

The defending Class 6A State Champions from Charles Page High School suffered their first defeat of the season in a dual with No. 1 ranked Broken Arrow (6-1). The fifth-ranked Sandites rattled off twenty-five straight victories over the course over the past two seasons before falling 43-25 Tuesday night at Clyde Boyd Middle School.

The No. 24 nationally-ranked Tigers jumped out to a quick 18-0 lead with pins from State Champion Gavin Potter and Noah Cortes and a forfeit at 220. Freshman Carter Young got the Sandites on the board at 106 pounds by pinning Jared Hill, then State Champion Riley Weir scored a 12-0 major decision against Blazik Perez. Seth Jones edged out Bryce Cockrell 3-2 to cut the deficit to 18-13.

Reece Witcraft won a 9-1 major decision against Sandite State Qualifier Blake Sargent then Blake Gonzales defeated Irwin Portillo to make it 25-13, but the Sandites won the next two matches by pin to tie it up. Scotty Patton pinned Diego Maturino and Chris Kirby pinned Ryan Primicias.

State Qualifier Brady Mattioda put the Tigers back out front with with a 5-3 decision over Kaleb Tabor and a pin from Caleb Wise at 160 meant the Sandites needed to win their next two matches with bonus points to win the dual.

State Qualifier Bryce Mattioda scored a 6-0 decision over Dayvon Taylor to clinch the dual for the Tigers and Zeno Marcheselli pinned Riley Magee to ice the cake.

Sand Springs will look to start a new streak Thursday night when they host No. 13 Muskogee (5-1), Bartlesville (2-4), and No. 15 Enid (3-4) in the District Duals quadrangle. The winner of the four-way battle will advance to the Dual State Championship in Shawnee this February. Sand Springs is the defending Dual State Champion. Broken Arrow will host No. 8 Ponca City (3-2) on Thursday.

CPHS Basketball: Boys fall 62-53 to No. 1 Broken Arrow, Savage scores 16

Class 6A No. 1 ranked Broken Arrow High School (11-1, 6-0) was caught off guard when they rolled into the Ed Dubie Field House as the No. 9 Sandites (11-3, 4-2) jumped out to a 19-8 first quarter lead. Unfortunately for Charles Page High School, the Tigers didn't get the top rank by being unable to adapt.

Throttling the Sandites 16-2 in the second quarter, the Tigers never trailed in the second half, but Sand Springs was constantly nipping at their heels.

Camryn Dennis scored first for the Tigers, but Davon Richardson tied it up and Cole Durkee drilled a three for a lead that would last for most of the half. Colt Savage and Matthew Price also got in on the action and Durkee led the way with nine points for a 19-8 first quarter beat down.

The second quarter was a far bigger beat down, but for the visitors. Braden Boyer and Joshua Robinson cut it to 19-12, Colt Savage hit a two, then Broken Arrow rattled off fourteen points straight for a 26-21 halftime advantage.

The third quarter also went heavily to the visitors, who pushed their advantage to double digits and led 44-32 to start the final stanza. Sand Springs won the final quarter, but not by enough.

Broken Arrow led by as much as fourteen and the Sandites cut it as close as seven, but every time the host team tried to battle back, the visitors jumped back out front.

Dennis led all scorers with twenty points, followed by Robinson with seventeen. Boyer contributed fourteen to put three Tigers in double digits. Colt Savage led the Sandites with sixteen, followed by Cale Savage with twelve and Richardson with ten.

The Sandites remain third in Frontier Valley Conference standings behind Broken Arrow and No. 7 Union (9-3, 5-1). Sand Springs will take a week off before traveling to Bartlesville (4-8, 1-5) next Tuesday. The Tigers will travel to the John Nobles Invitational in Moore on Thursday and will play 5A Durant (1-10) in the first round.

CPHS Basketball: Girls improve to 6-0 in FVC with 52-41 win over Broken Arrow, Johnson scores 21

It wasn’t the prettiest game of the season, but the Class 6A No. 9 Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (10-4) improved to 6-0 in Frontier Valley Conference play with a 52-41 Tuesday night win over Broken Arrow (2-10, 1-6). Junior standout Destiny Johnson led the way with 21 points, closely followed by University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter with eighteen.

Johnson missed a pair of free throws to start the game, but took a rebound to the house to make up for it on the next possession. Kersgieter followed it up with a pair of field goals, then Isabella Regalado iced a three for a 10-0 lead.

That advantage quickly evaporated, however. Kinsey Callen and Aaliya Nascimento cut it to 10-5 by the end of the first quarter. Bree Berge hit a three-pointer to kick off the second quarter, but the Lady Tigers went on an eight-point run to tie it up. Berge scored again for the Sandites, then Callen hit another three for the Tigers’ first lead of the game, 16-15.

Johnson made a three-point play and Kersgieter hit a free throw. Callen and Kersgieter exchanges twos, then Callen hit a three for the 21-21 tie. Kersgieter hit another basket to bring her first-half total to ten, but Callen drained her fifth three of the night to take a 24-23 halftime advantage with seventeen points.

Nascimento added to the Tiger lead with back-to-back layups to start the third quarter. Johnson rebounded a blocked Regalado three to get the Sandites in the book, but the visitors held the lead for most of the period before Sand Springs closed out the stanza with eleven-straight points to end the quarter 38-33.

Sand Springs continued to pull ahead in the fourth quarter and reestablished their double-digit lead with a three-point play from Johnson. Callen hit a two, Johnson scored three more from the stripe, Jada Hvtch scored her first basket, then Kersgieter added two more free throws to finish up 52-41.

The Sandites keyed in pretty well on Broken Arrow’s deep ball in the second half, holding the Tigers to one three-pointer on nine attempts, but Nascimento picked up the slack and finished with fourteen points. Callen managed only one basket in the second half and finished with a team-high nineteen.

Sand Springs will take a week off before taking on their biggest test of the season at No. 2 Bartlesville (12-0, 6-0). The Bruins and Sandites are the top two teams in the conference and the only undefeated teams left. Broken Arrow will return to action Thursday against 5A No. 5 Booker T. Washington (8-4) in the first round of the Jenks-Union Tournament.
