CPHS Basketball: Undefeated Lady Sandites win 8th-straight 49-42 over Owasso, Regalado scores 17

Last season the Owasso Girls' High School Basketball team served the Lady Sandites their only loss of the regular season, and for a brief while it looked like they could give Sand Springs their first loss of this season as well. By the end of the first quarter the Class 6A No. 1 Charles Page girls (8-0 overall, 4-0 conference) trailed No. 14 Owasso (1-2, 1-2) 12-8.

Destiny Johnson drew first blood for Sand Springs, but Owasso went on a seven-point run with baskets from Mya Bhinhar and Rylie Boone and didn't relinquish their lead till the second quarter. Avery Vancuren scored three for Owasso, Holly Kersgieter scored a layup and a pair of free throws to make it 10-6, Bhinhar scored her sixth point, then Johnson bookended the period.

The second period belonged wholly to Sand Springs who jumped straight out of the gate with thirteen points including three three-pointers from Isabella Regalado. Boone scored the lone basket of the quarter for Owasso then Jacie Taber scored her second goal for a 23-14 halftime lead.

The Rams came out of the locker room ready to rumble, winning the third quarter 12-9 with seven points from Tiya Douglas and cut the difference as close as 30-26 before Kersgieter finished the quarter off with a steal and a layup.

Douglas kicked off the fourth quarter with a two, Kersgieter made a three-point play, Bhinhar added two, then Regalado got back in her groove with back-to-back three-pointers to make it 41-30. The double-digit lead wouldn't last long, but as close as Owasso came they never managed to reclaim their early lead.

Regalado led all scorers with seventeen points, followed by Kersgieter and Bhinhar with sixteen apiece. Kersgieter also had ten rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

The Sandites will return to action Wednesday, December 27th, at the Tournament of Champions against 4A No. 8 Victory Christian (7-1) at 4:00 p.m. Owasso will also play at the Tournament of Champions, starting with 3A No. 6 Holland Hall (6-2) at 7:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Colt Savage scores 34 in 72-64 win over Owasso

Sand Springs scored first, last, and did most of the scoring in between to easily handle the Class 6A No. 14 ranked Owasso Rams (1-2 overall, 1-2 conference) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House.

The No. 8 Sandites (7-1, 3-1) jumped out to a five-point advantage with back-to-back baskets from Cole Durkee and never gave up the lead. By the end of the first quarter they were up 16-9 after a Josh Minney putback and five points from Colt Savage.

Hayden Peterson and Seth Pomeroy combined for five to start the second quarter in Owasso's favor, but Davon Richardson hit two free throws, Colt Savage hit two field goals, and Cale Savage sank a three to make it 25-14. Owasso scored four, Colt Savage scored three, then Peterson and Isaiah Jacobs hit free throws to end the half 28-20.

The third period was the highest-scoring for both teams but once again it was Sand Springs with the edge, expanding their lead to 51-40 by the end of the quarter. Colt Savage had twelve points in that stanza alone and Richardson had seven.

Owasso managed to win the fourth quarter, but not by enough to catch a lead. The Rams cut it as close as six points multiple times, but Sand Springs was always ready with a rally to keep things comfortable. Matt Price sank two free throws to end the game at 72-64. 

Colt Savage led all scorers with 34 points, just one shy of the career-best performance he had against Redemption Life World Academy this weekend. Richardson scored eleven points for the Sandites and had a team-high eight rebounds. Peterson led the Rams with 21 points, followed by Pomeroy with thirteen and Courte Alexander with twelve.  

Sand Springs will return to action Wednesday, December 27th, against U.S. Grant (1-3) in the first round of the Duncan Holiday Classic at 5:30 p.m. The Rams will travel to Jefferson City, Missouri to play Helias Catholic (5-0) in the first round of the Joe Machens Great 8 Classic Thursday, December 28th at 5:30 p.m.

CPHS Wrestling: Undefeated freshman Carter Young wins prestigious Kansas City Invitational

An injury-ridden and heavily depleted Charles Page High School wrestling team headed to the prestigious Kansas City Stampede this weekend and crowned an individual champion for the fifth-straight year at one of the toughest tournaments in the country. 

Freshman Carter Young (13-0) continued his undefeated varsity career with a first place finish at 106 pounds. He breezed through pool play with two pins and two technical falls. In the gold bracket he pinned Sammy Dickey in 1:20, teched Nick Cambria (Buford) 22-7 in 4:00, and scored a 13-7 decision over Zach Keal before shutting out Kansas State Qualifier Jason Henschel 7-0 in the finals. This is his second-straight tournament championship after sweeping the Perry Tournament of Champions last weekend.

Riley Weir (8-6 season, 70-24 career) lost his opening match at 120 pounds to Park Hill’s Ethen Miller, but snapped back with three straight pins before falling to Alabama State Champion Sam Latona in the gold bracket. In consolation he scored a 16-0 tech fall against Logan Adamson before falling in a rematch with Miller. He finished in twelfth place overall. Kai Orine (Seckman) defeated Latona 5-0 for first place.

Kaleb Tabor (4-4) pinned three of his pool opponents at 152 pounds, falling only to Kansas State Champion Cade Lindsey by a close 5-0 decision. In the gold bracket he won his opening match 6-5 over Joe Tyson, but fell 4-2 to Kansas State Qualifier Trevor Dopps and took twelfth place. Mill Valley’s Jarret Bendure won the bracket 8-6 over Edmond North’s Kruz Simons.

Gage Fain (7-4, 46-42) placed thirteenth at 220 pounds. He won two of his pool matches, falling to Tenenssee State Runner-Up Grayson Walthall, to earn his way to the gold bracket. He fell 9-3 to State Runner-Up Blake Minnick from Edmond North and 3-1 to Trenton Willert before pinning Zane Collinsworth in 48 seconds. Zach Elam (Staley) pinned Perry Ganci (Jesuit) in 26 seconds in the finals. 

Brendon Wiseley (6-5) went 3-1 in pool play to make the gold bracket where he took fifteenth place at 113 pounds. He won his first three matches, including a 7-0 decision over Kansas State Qualifier Austin Keal, before falling 15-2 to Missouri State Qualifier Trey Crawford. He lost his first bracket match to State Runner-Up Garrett Steidley and fell 2-0 to Kansas State Qualifier Silas Pineda but snapped back in the placement round. He took a 12-0 lead over Kansas State Qualifier Ethan Hill before pinning his foe at the 3:42 mark. Logan Ashton (Buford) defeated Park Hill’s Trey Crawford 8-6 for first place.

Dayvon Taylor (7-8) won his first match by pin and received a forfeit before falling to a Missouri State Qualifier and a Georgia State Runner-Up. In the silver bracket he won three-straight, including two pins, before falling in the finals. He was runner-up in silver, or eighteenth overall at 170 pounds. Troy Fisher (Goddard) won the bracket 3-1 against Rocky Elam (Staley).

Scott Patton (8-8, 15-10) got off to a tough start at 138, losing his first two matches to a pair of Missouri State Qualifiers, but won his next four matches. In the silver bracket he defeated Mason Hedgecorth 8-5 and pinned Gunner Murphy in 21 seconds before falling 6-2 to Cayleb Atkins. He took fourth place in silver, or twentieth overall.  Luke Surber (Tuttle) won the gold bracket 8-3 against Kyle Prewitt (CBC).

Irwin Portillo (8-7, 14-12) competed at 132 pounds and took 23rd Place overall. He went 2-2 in pool play and 3-2 for seventh place in the silver bracket. He only lost to State Qualifiers, and defeated Christian Robinson 4-2 in the placement match. Jevon Parrish (Olathe North) won the bracket 3-2 against Thompson’s Gabe Hixenbaugh.

Seth Jones (8-7, 10-10) competed at 126 pounds and went 2-2 in pool play, placing him in the silver bracket where he went 2-3. He forfeited his final two matches and settled for eighth place in silver, or 24th Place overall. Cameron Fusco (Seckman) won the gold bracket with a 5-2 decision over Whitfield’s Mike McAteer.

Mill Valley’s Conner Ward won the 145 bracket 7-0 against Blaine Bergey of Buford. Tuttle’s Dustin Plott won the 160 bracket 7-4 against Mason Reinche (Baylor). Park Hill’s Devin Winston pinned Joseph Williams (Neosho) in the 182-pound finals. Donovan Benetti (Nixa) won the 195-pound bracket 7-6 against Zach Hazen (Blue Springs). Max Darrah (Whitfield) defeated Neosho's Adrian Hitchcock in an ultimate tiebreaker for the heavyweight title.

Sand Springs senior and defending tournament champion Payton Scott was unable to defend his title and will likely miss the entire season due to a hand injury. 

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday when they travel to No. 14 Stillwater (0-4) in their last dual before Christmas Break.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites undefeated at Memorial Invitational, Savage scores 35

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School boys' basketball team (6-1) had to play four quarters of solid basketball to overcome a tough private school team Saturday afternoon at the Tulsa Memorial Veterans' Arena Invitational. 

The Sand Springs Sandites went undefeated in the festival for the third-straight year, but their competition was far tougher than in previous seasons. The Redemption Life World Institute (3-4) upset 5A No. 8 Collinsville (4-3) on Thursday and nearly knocked off 5A No. 1 Tulsa Memorial (9-0) Saturday before falling 70-68. Sand Springs won their match with the Disciples 71-67, but needed every bit of senior standout Colt Savage's abilities to do it. 

Sevor Blackburn struck first for the Disciples, but the Sandites went on a nine-point run, book-ended by Savage, before Zerek Thomas drained a three-pointer. Savage added a three of his own, followed by baskets from Cole Durkee and Matt Price for a 16-5 lead and the teams exchanged blows before ending the period 20-13. 

Sand Springs cushioned their lead in the second quarter, despite a hot start from Nate White with five-straight points. Savage scored the next three baskets for Sand Springs, one each from three-point and two-point range plus a free throw. Price and White scored threes, Savage made a three-point play, Cale Savage got in on the action with a five-point run late in the period, and the Sandites held a 42-31 advantage as they headed to the locker room. 

The third quarter belong wholly to the underdogs as the Disciples steamrolled the Sandites 20-7 and took their first lead since the opening basket at 51-49. White and Christian Prayer expanded the lead to 55-49 to start the final stanza, but the Sandites reclaimed their advantage with a seven-point run capped by a Colt Savage three. 

Next it was Zack Thomas's time to shine with a pair of free throws and a field goal to make it 59-56 in favor of the Disciples. Davon Richardson hit a free throw, White scored on a steal, Durkee sank a three, then Price scored two more from the charity stripe. Blackburn hit a freebie for the Disciples, followed by a goal from White, but Cale Savage made it 65-64 with a three-pointer for the final lead change of the game. Colt Savage hit two from the charity stripe with thirty seconds left, but it was far from over.

Matt Price fouled Zack Thomas on a three-point shot, but the Disciple only went one-of-three, then Colt Savage scored two more. Zerek Thomas kept his team alive, scoring with 4.8 seconds left, but Colt Savage sank two more free throws after a desperation foul, putting the game out of reach for the valiant underdogs. 

Colt Savage finished with a career-high 35 points and seven rebounds, followed by Durkee with thirteen points and Cale Savage with eleven for the Sandites. Four Disciples broke double-digits. Zerek Thomas had eighteen, White had sixteen, Zack Thomas had thirteen, and Blackburn scored ten. 

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday with a Frontier Valley Conference matchup against No. 13 Owasso (1-1) at 8:00 p.m. in the Sand Springs Ed Dubie Field House.

CPHS Basketball: No. 8 Sandites throttle Hornets 83-51, Savage scores 18

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School boys' basketball team (5-1) took on the Northwest Arkansas Hornet home-school team (9-10) in the second round of the Tulsa Memorial Veterans' Arena Invitational Friday night and overcame a rocky start for a decisive 83-51 victory.

It was less of a game, and more of a varsity on JV scrimmage to begin with. The Sandites ran laps around the Hornets for a 15-0 lead before Daniel Wenger got his team on the board and Aaron Sanders followed it up with a putback. The teams exchanged blows from there and ended the first quarter 21-9.

The second period was a whole different story for both teams as the Tri-State homeschoolers won the stanza 21-16 to cut the gap to 37-30. The Sandites were back to their usual selves in the second half, however, jumping back out to a 48-32 lead in no time and ending the quarter 57-34.

Colt Savage came out hot in the fourth quarter with a layup, steal, dunk, and assist to push the advantage to 63-43. Cole Durkee sank his fourth three-pointer of the night to finish with his third career-high night in the past week at sixteen points. 

Savage led all scorers with eighteen points, followed by Durkee and Davon Richardson with a season-high fifteen. Chase Ammons was the big man for the Hornets with fourteen points, closely followed by Wenger with twelve. 

The Sandites will take on Redemption Life World Academy (3-3) Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the final round of the invitational as they hope to finish the festival undefeated for the third-straight year. The Tulsa-based private school won't be a cakewalk, however. They upset 5A No. 11 Collinsville (3-2) on Thursday and gave 5A No. 1 Memorial (8-0) a run for their money before falling 70-68. Northwest Arkansas will play Collinsville at 12:30.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites pummel Wichita 84-50, Durkee/Richardson score 15

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Sand Springs Sandites (4-1) took on the Wichita Defenders (7-2) in the first round of the Tulsa Memorial Veterans Arena Invitational and dealt their out-of-state foes a brutal 84-50 loss.

Cole Durkee, who was coming off a twelve-point career night just last week, scored the first three field goals for Sand Springs. The Sandites jumped out to a 5-0 lead, Sam Schmidt hit a basket to get Wichita on the board, Colt Savage scored a free throw, then Jonah Wolters and Kaz Ammons scored to tie it up at 6-6. That was as close as the Defenders would get to leading.

Durkee hit his second three-point basket, Colt Savage scored his first field goal, then Matt Price made his way into the scorebook and the Sandites never looked back. David Brown scored for Wichita. Davon Richardson took a steal to the house then hooked it back to Sandite freshman Marlo Fox who drained a three. Ammons notched a free throw, but Sand Springs went on a nine-point run with baskets from Josh Minney, Cale Savage, and Kendrick Williams before Ammons put an end to the first quarter at 25-10.

Colt Savage started off the second quarter with a free throw, Durkee scored a two, Andrew Martin got Wichita on the board, then Durkee sank a three for a new career-high at thirteen points. Schmidt went off for the Defenders, scoring eight points to cut the deficit to 33-20, Gage Fisher sank his first varsity field goal attempt from three-point range, then David Brown and Wolters cut the deficit to 36-28 before the Sandite second-string got their feet under them. Minney scored his third layup of the night, followed by Williams and another three from Fisher to end the half 43-28.

Schmidt notched the first points of the second half but Sand Springs responded with baskets from Price, Richardson, and Colt Savage to make it 49-30. Wichita went on a six point run, Richardson went on a six point run, Wichita went went on a five point run, then Sand Springs finished the quarter with eight-straight for a 63-41 lead.

Justin Brown and Richardson exchanged two pointers to start the final stretch, then Price scored a pair of free throws and a three to make it 72-45. Schmidt scored his eighteenth and final point to lead all scorers, then the Sandites went on a twelve point run before David Brown sank a three to end the night.

Durkee and Richardson's fifteen points apiece were enough to lead Sand Springs, followed by Colt Savage with thirteen and Price with twelve. All twelve Sandites who came to the game got to play, and eleven of them made their way into the scorebook. Wolters had ten points to put two Defenders in the double digits. 

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 5:30 p.m. against the Northwest Arkansas Hornets (9-9) while the Defenders will take on 5A No. 13 Collinsville (3-2) at 7:00 p.m. The invitational is played festival style with no bracket and two round-robin divisions. The Sandites will play Redemption Life World Academy (3-2) Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and will not meet the tournament hosts, 5A No. 1 Memorial (7-0). Sand Springs and Memorial have both gone undefeated for first place in their divisions the past two seasons.
