The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School Boys' Basketball team improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference Tuesday evening in Sapulpa, coming from behind for a 73-64 win over their biggest rivals.

No. 19 Sapulpa (0-1, 0-1) came into the game on fire, jumping out to an 8-2 lead before the Sandite battled back and Cole Durkee tied it up at 10-10 with a three-point basket. Jacoby Durant hit a two for the Chieftains, Durkee tied it again, Joseph Combs hit another two, then Colt Savage tied it at 14-14. Next up was Lajuan Hughes with a three-pointer for a lead that the Chieftains wouldn't relinquish again till the second period. Sapulpa won the first quarter 20-18 after a pair of last second free-throws from Sandite freshman Marlo Fox.

Savage tied things up with a pair of free throws to start the second quarter, then Davon Richardson gave the Sandites their first lead of the game. The second period was back-and-forth for its entirety with four lead changes before brothers Cale and Colt Savage hit a pair of free throws apiece to end the half trailing 35-34.

The Sandites took the lead once and for all in the third quarter with a two-point basket from Fox to make it 52-51. Cale Savage drained a three to end the period, then Colt scored two more from the charity stripe to start the fourth. He was ten-for-twelve on free throws for the night, and the Sandites took a whopping 37 penalty shots.

Fox gave Sand Springs their first nine-point lead at 68-59 with a pair of free throws, then Cale and Colt, Durkee, and Matt Price all got in on the action to finish at 73-64. Colt Savage led all scorers with a season-high 28 points and his first double-double of the year with ten rebounds. He was an impressive eight-of-eleven on field goals. Price scored a career-high eleven points and Durkee had a career-high nine.

The Sandites will continue with Frontier Valley Conference action next Friday when they host No. 5 Union (1-0). The Redskins were undefeated and ranked first in 6A going into the post-season last year before falling in the State Semifinals. They started this year with a 68-47 conference win over No. 15 Muskogee (0-1).

CPHS Wrestling Coach Kelly Smith presented with Pacesetter Award

Charles Page High School Head Wrestling Coach Kelly Smith was recognized by the Sand Springs Board of Education at their regular monthly meeting Monday evening. Smith led the 2016-2017 Sandites to their most successful season in program history.

"We are blessed with superstar teachers," said board-member Mike Mullins. "Kelly Smith is a wonderful wrestling coach. But he's not as good a wrestling coach as he is a teacher. It's a blessing to have you as part of the Sand Springs community and Sand Springs schools. We appreciate not just what you did but what you do."

Last year's Sandites won the State and Dual State Championships with five individual champions in their weight classes. He was recently named the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) Coach of the Year.

In addition to the Pacesetter Award, Smith also received a Coin of Excellence inscribed with "Think Right, Challenge Minds, Inspire Hearts."

"We don't give these out very often," said Mullins. "We give these out when somebody goes above and beyond. Kelly does that every day."

CPHS Basketball: Colt Savage scores 21, Sandites knock off No. 8 Bishop Kelley

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School boys basketball team won a thriller against 5A No. 8 Bishop Kelley Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House to kick off conference play in style.

Colt Savage scored the first two points of the game from the charity stripe, Zachary Coffman hit a three for the Comets, Cale Savage scored two, then the visitors went on an eight-point run to take the lead for the duration of the first period.

Matt Price made a three point play off a fouled layup to start the second quarter down 13-11, Coffman hit another three, then Price tacked on two more free throws. The eldest Savage hit back to back threes at the end of the half to take the lead 25-24 and Josh Minney rebounded the Comets' next shot and drained the clock for the halftime advantage.

The Sandites pushed their advantage to 33-29 in the third quarter, kicked off by a two point basket from Davon Richardson. Ryan Gendron and Anthony Bomprezzi tied it up at 27-27, but Richardson scored a pair of free throws and sent a rebound to Colt Savage for a dunk and 31-27 lead. Michael Pynn added two free throws, but Colt undid them with a two for the 33-29 lead to start the final stretch.

Coffman hit two from the charity stripe, Richardson scored two for the Sandites, then Cale Savage gave his team their biggest lead of the game at 38-31 with a three-point basket. The visitors went down swinging, however, fighting back for a 44-43 lead behind Bomprezzi and Garrett Salyer.

Colt Savage scored a pair of free throws for the lead and Richardson snagged a steal, but the Comets sent Savage to the line again and this time he missed and was rebounded by Gendron with seven seconds left. Both teams exchanged timeouts and the Comets took one last shot with a little more than a second remaining. The shooter went down in a pile of bodies, however, and the Sandites came up with the win.

Sand Springs will continue conference play Tuesday with a trip to No. 17 Sapulpa for a Highway 97 Rivalry matchup and the Chieftains' season-opener. Bishop Kelley will host unranked Bartlesville for the Bruins' season-opener.

After a slow start against Class 5A No. 17 ranked Bishop Kelley (0-1 overall, 0-1 conference) the 6A No. 3 Charles Page High School Lady Sandites (2-0, 1-0) surged ahead in the second quarter for the 64-43 win to kick off conference play.

The visiting Comets jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead against the defending Frontier Valley Champions after a steal and layup by sophomore Meaghan Cyr and a pair of free throws by Macy Craig. Much of the first half was spent at the charity stripe as the two teams combined for thirty free throw attempts before halftime.

Jacie Taber scored four points for the Lady Sandites, the Comets jumped back out to an 11-5 lead, then the home team went on a ten-point run for the lead with four free throws from Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter, a two-pointer from Madison Burris, and a three from Taber. Grace Ritchie hit a layup for the Comets shortly before the buzzer and narrowed the game to 15-13.

Cyr scored the first basket of the second quarter, but the home team scored eight in a row for their first big lead. Destiny Johnson scored six, Kimi Presnell had four, and the Sandites were up 32-18 before Craig scored on a steal to end the half.

The Sandites put the game in the bag by winning the third quarter 21-7 and pushed their lead as far as 58-28 in the fourth before sending in the backups and allowing the Comets to cut the gap to a final score of 64-43.

Twelve Sandites got to see action, eight made their way in the scorebook, and Kersgieter led all scorers with twenty points and ten rebounds. Presnell added thirteen points and Johnson scored twelve. Two Lady Comets scored double digits: Craig led with thirteen followed by Cyr with eleven.

Sand Springs will return to action when they travel to No. 19 Sapulpa next Tuesday for a Highway 97 Rivalry matchup. The Comets will host No. 7 Bartlesville Tuesday for the Bruins' season opener.

Matt Price made a three-point play off a fouled layup then Davon Richardson scored four-straight for a 15-0 lead before the visitors got on the board. The eldest Savage brother notched his first points of the evening with a steal and a dunk shortly before the end of the first.

The Wildcats fared slightly better in the second stanza but the Sandites won the quarter 21-13 for a 44-15 halftime advantage, led by Colt Savage with eight points. Freshman Marlo Fox and sophomore Josh Minney made their varsity debuts with two points apiece.

Colt Savage ran laps around the visitors in the third quarter for eleven points and Fox drilled a three for a 60-24 lead to start the final stretch. Price scored seven in a row to start the fourth, Brett Boyles and freshman Kendrick Williams scored four points apiece, and Sam Anderson scored the final Sandite goal of the evening.

Fifteen total Sandites got in on the action, including all four varsity freshmen, and ten made their way onto the scoreboard. Colt Savage led in rebounds with eight, Price snagged a team-high five steals and a team-high four assists. Boyles led the Sandites in blocks with two.

The Sandites will return to action Friday when they host 5A No. 8 Bishop Kelley in their first Frontier Valley Conference matchup at 8:00 p.m. It will be the first game of the season for the Comets. Three Lady Sandites scored in double figures led by Destiny Johnson's 31 points. Holly Kersgieter and Isabella Regalado contributed sixteen points and eighteen points respectively. Regalado tied her previous best performance, while Johnson surged past her prior record of twenty.

Johnson's big night got off to a fast start as she scored the first six points of the game for Sand Springs. The two teams traded baskets for a few possessions before the Lady Sandites went on a 14-2 run to end the first quarter, sparked by a pair of three-pointers by Regalado. Sand Springs held a 22-10 lead to end the first quarter and saw their lead cut to single digits only once for the remainder of the game.

The second quarter was a dead draw 21-21 with both squads alternating baskets for much of the quarter. Ponca forward Jalissa Garcia scored eleven of her team high 22 points in the second to keep things close and send the Lady Sandites to the half leading 43-31.

The third quarter turned into the Johnson and Kersgieter show, as the two combined to score all fifteen Sand Springs points. Kersgieter scored nine points in the stanza, seven of them coming from the foul stripe. Ponca trimmed a single point off the lead heading into the final period.

Kersgieter was called for her fifth personal foul early in the fourth quarter leaving the majority of the scoring duties to Johnson who was more than capable, scoring eleven points to seal the win for her squad.

Both teams are coming off State Tournament appearances in their prior season, and the game was reminiscent of the Lady Sandites' season-debut in 2016 when they easily handled a top-ten ranked Bartlesville 51-34 and went on to win fourteen-straight.

Sand Springs will host 5A No. 17 Bishop Kelley for the Comets' season-debut Friday at 6:00 p.m. The game will mark the kickoff of Frontier Valley Conference play, and the Lady Sandites are the defending FVC Champions. Ponca City will travel to 5A No. 3 El Reno (1-0) who knocked off No. 8 Piedmont 44-29.
