Held in Fargo, North Dakota, the USAW Nationals are one of the biggest events of the year for the wrestling community.

Young was the defending three-time USAW Champion with tournament wins in Novice and Schoolboy. This was his first year at the Cadet age division.

Last year Young defended his title without giving up a single point, winning all of his matches by 10-0 technical fall. It looked like he might repeat the feat this year.

Competing at 94 pounds, Young won his first four matches 10-0. He defeated Ethan Ferris in 27 seconds, Utah State Champion Austin Bush in fifty seconds, Nebraska State Champion Dyson Kunz in sixty seconds, and USAW Folkstyle National Runner-Up Kase Mauger in forty seconds without giving up a single point.

He finally found a competitor in New York State Runner-Up Jordan Titus, but never trailed in points and rolled to a 17-7 victory in 4:15. The winning streak finally came to an end in the finals as he took on Colorado State Champion Jett Strickenberger. After giving up an 8-0 advantage to Strickengerger in the first round, Young scored four in the second period. Strickenberger tacked on the final two points and held on for the 10-4 decision.

Oklahoma tied with Georgia for 11th out of 46 states. Young was the highest-placing member of the Oklahoma Cadet squad.

CPHS Wrestling: Riley Weir makes debut on National rankings

Charles Page High School has been represented in FloWrestling's national rankings for the past four years thanks to undefeated four-time State Champion Daton Fix. Fix is now at Oklahoma State University, but another Sandite has now made his way into the rankings.

Junior State Champion Riley Weir made his way into the No. 18 spot at 113 pounds in the first rankings of the new school year.

Following a 41-6 sophomore season and 6A State Championship win, Weir has gone 13-2 in freestyle competition this summer. He placed sixth at the U.S. Open Freestyle Nationals and went undefeated on the Oklahoma USA Wrestling Freestyle Dual team. He is expected to compete this weekend at the prestigious USAW Junior Freestyle Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota.

During dual nationals last month Weir pinned No. 16 ranked Ben Kamali in 1:13 and teched No. 5 Anthony Clark 10-0. Clark dropped to No. 19 after the loss, but Kamali moved up to No. 11.

Two other Sandites have a good shot at entering the rankings if they live up to the performances they gave last season.

Senior Payton Scott went 40-3 last season with tournament wins at Geary, Kansas City, and the 6A State Championship. Geary and KCI are both nationally-acclaimed tournaments, and Scott already defeated 152 No. 18 Dustin Plott of Tuttle, Oklahoma.

Last year Scott scored wins against Kansas State Champion Jalin Harper, three-time State Champion Elijah Tanner, three-time Kansas State Champion Kameron Frame, and three-time New Mexico State Champion Ryan Rochford.

Freshman Carter Young has won three-straight Junior High Allstate Championships and three-straight USAW Freestyle National Championships and went undefeated on the Oklahoma Schoolboy Dual teams for both Freestyle and Greco Roman last summer. He will compete at the USAW Cadet Nationals this weekend.

Class of 2017 graduates Michael Ritchey and Daton Fix are also expected to make appearances in Fargo.

Other nationally-ranked Oklahomans are:

  • 152 No. 18 Dustin Plott (Tuttle)
  • 170 No. 8 Zane Coleman (Choctaw)
  • 182 No. 20 Gavin Potter (Broken Arrow)
  • 195 No. 15 Zach Marcheselli (Broken Arrow)
  • 220 No. 15 Josh Heindselman (Piedmont)
  • 220 No. 20 Cabe Dickerson (Altus)
  • 285 No. 11 Montana Phillips (Lawton MacArthur)

Sandite of the Week Aden Baughman qualifies for National Championship

Charles Page High School junior State Champion Aden Baughman was selected as our Sandite of the Week for his first-place victory at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri on Saturday.

Baughman's first place performance at the USA Track and Field Region 9 Junior Olympic Championship event qualifies him for the 51st Hershey National Championship in two weeks.

The championship is expected to attract nearly 10,000 athletes to Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas. The venue is one of only five IAAF Class I Certified tracks in the United States and has a seating capacity of nearly 8,000.

Competing against athletes from the Arkansas, Oklahoma, Ozarks, and Missouri Valley associations, Baughman finished the 800-meter run in 1:58.83, 2.55 seconds ahead of Claremore freshman 5A State Runner-Up Jack Vincent.

Baughman previously took first place in two events at the Oklahoma Association Championship last month with an 800-meter time of 2:00.23, and a 1500-meter time of 4:14.08. At the State Championship in May he took first in the 800 in 1:59.23.

Ian Baustert took second place at the State 1500 in 4:37.98 and first in the Association 1500 in 4:23.79. He placed third in the State 3000 in 10:10.34, second in Association in 9:48.35, and fourth at Regionals in 9:53.81.

Oklahoma State University freshman Cheyenne Walden took first place in the State 3000 run with a time of 10:18.59.

Clayton Giddens places second at National Championship, Christian Forbes takes third

Two Sand Springs middle school wrestlers competed at the USA Wrestling Kids Freestyle Nationals last weekend in Atlanta, Georgia.

Held at the Georgia World Congress Center, the event attracted more than 600 competitors from forty states. No team scores were kept, but Florida led the way in total National Champions with six, followed by Nebraska with five. Oklahoma crowned two national champions in Mason Burnham (Intermediate) and Jordan Williams (Schoolboy).

Clayton Giddens (25-1) took second place in Novice at 65 pounds. He breezed his way through the early competition, defeating Cooper Hilton, Noah Kubala, and Christian Fretwell all by technical fall. After a finals loss to defending three-time National Champion Luke Lilledahl, he rebounded with a 10-0 tech of Nore Turner for second place.

Christian Forbes (23-5) took third place in Schoolboy at 77 pounds. He won a tough 9-8 decision over Coy Hammack, then received a forfeit before scoring a pair of 10-0 tech falls over Maddox Khalimsky and Cole Hunt. He met his match in Christopher Martino in the finals, then lost the second-place challenge match to Dylan Gilcher.

The USAW Cadet and Junior Nationals will be held next weekend at the FargoDome in Fargo, North Dakota.
