CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites struggle in Muskogee but prevail 55-39, Johnson scores 16

Destiny Johnson led all scorers Tuesday with sixteen points against Muskogee. (Photo: Scott Emigh).

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (6-2, 4-0) played a lackluster game against Muskogee (1-5, 0-4) Tuesday evening on the road, but prevailed 55-39 to remain undefeated in Frontier Valley Conference action.

The Lady Sandites struggled to find rhythm as Head Coach Tobey Nightingale experimented with her lineups, but ultimately won by double digits, despite their closest bout with the Roughers in three seasons.

Both teams turned over their opening possessions, but Holly Kersgieter got the visitors on the board with a pair of free throws. Tea Myers laid up for Muskogee, Isabella Regalado laid up for Sand Springs, then Destiny Johnson, Lonnesha Hill, and Kersgieter traded free throws to make it 8-4 in the Sandites’ favor.

Dissatisfied with her starters’ defensive efforts, Nightingale sent in the second string just three minutes into the game. Things stalled out from there and neither team scored till the final minute. By the end of the first quarter, the Lady Sandites had put more players on the court than points on the board, leading only 9-6, a stark difference from the 36-8 opening stanza in the two teams’ first meeting, just a few weeks prior.

The starters returned to the game in the second period. Kersgieter and Johnson scored on quick steals, but the Roughers continued to hang tight and rattled off six straight to make it a one-point game. Jacie Taber briefly put her team back out front by a single point, but Madison Maxwell gave the Roughers their first and only lead of the night soon after.

The Sandites finally began to hit their stride with a deep ball from Kersgieter and a follow up from Johnson. Patton went 1-of-2 at the charity stripe, then Darrian Jordan rebounded for a long pass to Johnson and a 23-18 halftime advantage.

Just two weeks prior, the Sandites led the Roughers 57-16 at the half, but they shot only 5-of-20 on Muskogee’s home court and gave up five steals for a meager five-point advantage.

D’Asia Brown got hot in the early third period, scoring the Roughers’ first seven points to keep up with three-point baskets from Regalado and Padilla. Regalado had eight points in the quarter, but the Sandites could’t manage to pull away.

Kersgieter hit a layup to start the final stretch up 37-30, but Muskogee rattled off four more before the Sandites finally began to look like themselves and pull away. Johnson scored on a pair of steals and Madison Burris made her way into the scorebook with a three for their first double-digit advantage of the night. McKenzie Harris scored on a steal shortly before the buzzer.

The Lady Sandites will get a nearly three-week Christmas Break before returning to action Thursday, January 4th against No. 15 Bixby (4-2, 2-1) at home.

CPHS Basketball Preview: Sand Springs at Muskogee

The Charles Page High School boys and girls basketball teams will return to the court Tuesday evening in Muskogee. The game will be the last of the year for the girls, while the boys still have one holiday tournament left. Both Sandite squads remain undefeated in Frontier Valley Conference action.

The No. 8 ranked Sand Springs boys (6-1, 3-0) suffered their first loss of the season at the Memorial Veteran’s Arena Invitational, 71-50 against Southwest Christian Academy, but defeated the Wichita Defenders 76-65 and the HFC Warriors 70-65 in overtime. On Tuesday they also rolled over Bartlesville 64-42.

Muskogee (2-4, 1-2) played only one game last week and fell 77-50 to undefeated Sapulpa. The Sandites edged out Muskogee 57-52 earlier this year.

James Brown has been the leading scorer for Muskogee this season, and the Rougher put up 23 points against the Sandites in their first meeting this season. Peyton Clark and Cameron Clemmons also broke double digits against Sand Springs.

Davon Richardson leads the Sandites in scoring with 15.8 points per game, but three other Sandites are also averaging double digits. Cale Savage averages 13.3, Josh Minney has 11.1, and Marlo Fox has 11.

The Sandites are fourteenth in 6A defensively and fifteenth offensively, winning by an average score of 63 to 55. Muskogee is 25th offensively and twentieth defensively, losing their games by an average of 59 to 51.

Head Coach Eric Savage (376-156) is 5-3 against Muskogee in his time at Sand Springs, but only 1-3 on the Roughers’ home court. Last year was the first time his Sandites won in Muskogee.

The No. 8 Lady Sandites (5-2, 3-0) should have little trouble in their rematch with Muskogee (1-4, 0-3) after throttling the Lady Roughers 109-39 earlier this season. Just last week they knocked off the defending Conference Champs from Bartlesville 66-48. Muskogee is coming off a 74-44 loss to Sapulpa.

The Sandites host an array of Division I talent, led by Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter with 24.3 points per game. Destiny Johnson is also averaging double digits at 14.3. Mashyla Swain was the only Lady Rougher to break double digits in their earlier meeting with Sand Springs, scoring ten.

The Lady Sandites hold the No. 2 offense in 6A with 74 points per game and have the fourth-largest margin of victory at 21.3 points. Muskogee is thirtieth in offense and 31st in defense, losing by an average score of 74-38.

Sand Springs is 4-0 against Muskogee since 2016 and their last three meetings have been won by thirty points or more.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites dominate defending FVC Champions 66-48

The defending Frontier Valley Conference Champions from No. 9 ranked Bartlesville saw their seventeen-straight conference win streak snapped by No. 11 Sand Springs Tuesday night, and it wasn’t even close. The Sandites jumped out to an insurmountable 18-5 first period lead and rode it to a 66-48 finish behind 21-point performances by Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter and Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson.

Kersgieter led the team in scoring for the sixth time this season and had a double-double with thirteen rebounds. Johnson led the team for the second time this year, and Missouri State Softball-commit Jacie Taber had a career night with fifteen points and eight rebounds.

The Sandites (5-2, 3-0) came into their Tuesday night game 1-2 against ranked 6A teams despite playing like a State contender against lesser foes. They have outscored unranked opponents by an average of 91-43 but lost 74-62 to No. 8 Ponca City and 57-44 to No. 5 Shawnee, and needed overtime to beat No. 20 Jenks. The team needed a statement win to reassert themselves in the rankings after dropping from the No. 1 spot earlier this season.

They made their statement in style, overcoming a team with multiple Division One recruits, who was ranked second in 6A defensively coming into the night. Now it’s Bartlesville (3-2, 1-1) who is in need of a statement win, and they’ll get their shot Friday against No. 13 Bixby (4-1, 2-0).

The Sandites could not have asked for a more perfect start to the evening, taking a 12-0 lead with layups from Johnson, Regalado, and Kersgieter. The Bruins rimmed out on their first four shots and committed five penalties before the Sandites had one, leaving it open for a 6-of-9 run at the free throw line in the first quarter.

Rachael Simpson finally ended the Bruin drought with a layup and Nevada-commit Jena’ Williams scored the first three-pointer of the game soon after, but the Sandites ended the period up 18-5.

Johnson hit back-to-back field goals for their biggest lead of the half at 25-7, then the Bruins began finding their stride. Neither team scored more than two baskets in a row in the second period, but the Sandites managed to win the stanza 14-13 for a 32-18 locker room advantage.

Johnson led all scorers in the first half with eleven points while Chloe Martin did eight points in damage for the visitors. Both teams came away with five steals, but the Sandites won the rebound battle 24 to 11.

Sand Springs reclaimed their eighteen-point advantage four times in the third period and pushed it to twenty after putbacks from Taber and Kersgieter. Bartlesville tried to chip away at their deficit with triples from Simpson, Martin, and Elise Cone, but Johnson hit two free throws to close the period 49-31.

The Bruins began to collapse early in the fourth quarter, giving up an 8-3 run for their biggest deficit of the night at 57-35. Williams hit a long three to get her team back on track, but despite putting up their biggest quarter of the night, they were way too far behind to make a comeback.

Lady Sandite Basketball will get a week off before traveling to Muskogee (1-3, 0-2) next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

CPHS Basketball Preview: Bartlesville at Sand Springs

The Charles Page High School boys and girls basketball teams will return to action Tuesday evening in their second home games of the season at the Ed Dubie Field House. Both Sandite squads will look to remain undefeated in Frontier Valley Conference action when they take on Bartlesville, beginning with the girls at 6:00 p.m.

The Sand Springs boys are undefeated at 3-0 for the No. 8 ranking in Class 6A and are 2-0 in conference action. Last week they pulled off a tough 54-45 win over No. 18 Broken Arrow (1-2).

No. 17 Bartlesville (2-2, 0-1) lost their conference opener to Owasso but made it to the Broken Arrow Classic finals where they topped East Central and Putnam City before falling to Stillwater.

6’2” Senior Tayo Dina has been the hot commodity at Bartlesville for several seasons with tallies of 26 points against East Central and 18 against Putnam. 6’4” junior Davon Richardson is the bread and butter for Sand Springs, leading in all three games with an average of 19.

The Sandites are fourth in 6A defensively, allowing only 48 points per game, and Bartlesville has one of the lowest-scoring offenses at only 49 points per game. The Bruins also boast a top-ten defense, but Sand Springs is averaging 60 points per outing for a twelve-point margin of victory.

The two teams split wins last season. Bartlesville won on their home court 59-52, but Sand Springs prevailed 67-63 in the Area playoffs. Neither team has won on the other’s home court since Bartlesville rejoined the conference for the 2014-2015 season. The teams’ records are tied at 4-4 during that time, but the Sandites are 3-0 at home.

Bartlesville (2-2)
L 58 - 65 No. 15 Owasso
W 60 - 54 No. 17 East Central
W 39 - 38 No. 13 Putnam City
L 38 - 51 No. 13 Stillwater

Sand Springs (3-0)
W 68 - 46 Ponca City
W 57 - 52 Muskogee
W 54 - 45 No. 18 Broken Arrow

Both the Sand Springs and Bartlesville girls’ teams are out to prove themselves. Bartlesville won the FVC title last year, Sand Springs won it the year prior. Both were State Qualifiers and first-round knockouts last season. Both have taken early losses. Both want to reassert themselves as serious title contenders. Both are also led by new Head Coaches.

While Sand Springs hosts a deep roster with an array of collegiate-level talent, they’ve been led almost exclusively by Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter with 22 points per game. Destiny Johnson has had a couple of 20+point games and is averaging 13. Bartlesville has been led by junior Chloe Martin and Nevada-commit Jena Williams with twenty points apiece in multiple games.

Sand Springs went 3-1 last week with commanding wins over Broken Arrow and Tulsa Memorial. They were upset by Shawnee, however, and needed overtime to knock off Jenks for third place in the Bishop Kelley Invitational.

The Lady Sandites are the highest-scoring team in all of 6A with 76 points per game and have the sixth-largest margin of victory at 21.8 points. However, they’re only 26th defensively, giving up 54 points per game.

Bartlesville is practically the opposite of Sand Springs, relying on the second-best defense in 6A for their massive wins. They allow only 36 points per game and win by 20.5, but are still a solid fourteenth in offense with 56 points per game.

The Bruins also went 3-1 last week, starting their season Tuesday. They easily handled Owasso and Nathan Hale, but ran into a tough Edmond North team and had to settle for third place at the Broken Arrow Tournament with a brutal doubling of Holland Hall.

Bartlesville was undefeated in the regular season last year, topping Sand Springs 53-42 in conference action, but the Sandites spoiled their 25-game streak in the Area Championship with an identical score. Sand Springs is 6-2 against Bartlesville in the past four seasons and the Bruins haven’t won at the Dubie since the Spring of 2016.
