CPHS Football: No. 1 Bixby routs Sandites 51-20, Pennington scores 2 TDs

The longest active win streak in Oklahoma high school football continued Thursday night at Memorial Stadium, as Class 6A-II No. 1 Bixby improved to 6-0 on the season, 3-0 in district play, and 31-1 over the past three seasons with a 51-20 win over No. 8 Charles Page High School (4-3, 2-2).

Bixby hasn’t lost a game since their 2018 season opener and is in pursuit of their third-straight State title. They haven’t lost to Sand Springs since 2015.

Mason Williams did what Mason Williams does, completing 21 of 38 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns. Braylin Presley caught three passes for 102 yards and a score, and carried the ball 14 times for 58 yards and two more touchdowns. Luke Hasz caught eight passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

On the Sandite side of the ball, Ty Pennington was 4-of-15 passing for 124 yards and two touchdowns, and also led on the ground with 15 carries for 53 yards. Blake Jones had 11 carries for 47 yards and a score. Jamon Sisco caught two passes for 73 yards and a score, and Keaton Campbell caught one for 20 yards and a score.

The Sandite defense had touches of brilliance, forcing a pair of three-and-outs to start the game and three total punts on the evening. They also got two turnovers on downs, an interception, five tackles for loss, and two sacks against the No. 2 ranked offense in Class 6A-II. Bixby only scored on six of thirteen possessions.

Bixby didn’t score till their third possession, and it was a one-play 13-yard drive. The Sandites attempted a punt fake on fourth-and-two from their own 18-yard line and Campbell’s run was immediately snuffed out. Williams connected with Luke Hasz to put the visitors on the board.

The Spartan defense forced a quick three-and-out, and Dylan Hasz returned the punt 52 yards for a score, then Jersey Robb ran in a two-point conversion. Bixby needed only three plays on their next possession and scored on a 42-yard pass from Williams to Luke Hasz for a 22-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Sand Springs needed only two plays to retaliate. Pennington ran for 11 yards and a first down to end the first quarter, then hit Sisco for the 69-yard score on the first play of the second. A two-point pass attempt to Campbell was stopped short.

Bixby’s next scoring drive was more methodical, marching 61 yards over 13 plays, including two fourth-down conversions. Robb ran in the five-yard touchdown, as well as the two-point conversion for the 30-6 lead with 6:36 in the half. Williams threw his third interception of the year to Drake Fain late in the half, and the Sandite returned it 34 yards, but his team failed to capitalize.

The Spartans scored on all three of their third quarter possessions to put the game safely out of reach. Presley had running touchdowns from 18 and three yards, then scored on a 78-yard catch and run to put his team up 51-6 with 5:18 left in the third.

The home team scored 14 unanswered points to end the ballgame. Pennington had a career-best 59-yard run into the red zone, then completed a fourth-down 20-yard touchdown pass to Campbell late in the third.

Bixby traveled deep into Sandite territory before Fain and Sango Whitehorn made back-to-back sacks for a turnover on downs. On the ensuing drive Pennington tossed a 31-yarder to Jacob Blevins, setting up a 33-yard touchdown run from Jones.

Aidan Hill took a 68-yard run to the house on the Spartans’ final possession, but it was called back for holding and time expired before his team could score again.

Both teams’ kickers were perfect on the evening. Zach Heinen was two-for-two on PATs for the Sandites, and Connor Nolan was five-for-five for the Spartans. Whitehorn and Brooks Dudley led the Sandites on defense with six tackles apiece.

Sandite Football will return to action next Friday on the road at No. 5 Choctaw (4-3, 3-1), while Bixby will travel to No. 13 Muskogee (0-6, 0-3). Choctaw defeated Muskogee 26-10 in their game this week.

CPHS Football Preview: Sandites host No. 1 Bixby Thursday

It’s Fall Break in Sand Springs, which means Thursday Night Lights for the Sandite football team. Class 6A-II No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School (4-2, 2-1) will host No. 1 Bixby (5-0, 2-0) at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. Prior to the game, Church That Matters will be grilling up burgers, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches at a tailgate party benefitting Sandite Baseball.

Sand Springs

After three losing seasons and a 2-8 record last year, the Sandites pulled the trigger on a new coaching staff under first-year Head Coach Bobby Klinck, formerly a State Championship-winning Defensive Coordinator at Owasso. The students have bought into the new system and are 4-2 for the first time since 2016.

In week one the Sandites knocked off their rivals from Sapulpa 21-17 on the road. They barely lost 28-24 to 5A No. 1 Bishop Kelley after leading till the final minute, then won a 27-26 upset against Arkansas 4A No. 1 Shiloh Christian. They beat Ponca City 35-10 on the road and Muskogee 45-14 on Homecoming before the success train stalled out in a lopsided 49-0 defeat at No. 5 Booker T. Washington.

Junior quarterback Ty Pennington has completed 81 of 153 passes this season for 1287 yards and eight touchdowns with only three interceptions. He also leads the team on the ground with 87 carries for 260 yards and eight more scores. Blake Jones is the top running back with 47 carries for 253 yards and three touchdowns.

Keaton Campbell is 31-430 receiving with five touchdowns, Jacob Blevins is 16-342 for one TD, and Ryan Shoemaker is 13-116. Jamon Sisco is 17-382 receiving with two touchdowns, 19-91 rushing, averages 29 yards on five kick returns with one score, and he has blocked three kicks.

Zach Heinen is 14-of-14 on PATs and 1-of-2 on field goals with a long of 28. Jonathan Daniels is 3-of-4 on PATs and 2/2 on field goals with a long of 26. Heinen averages 32 yards per punt, and Greg Reed averages 50 yards per kick.

Sango Whitehorn has 56 tackles with 12 for loss, four sacks, and two blocked kicks. Drake Fain has 55 tackles with 5.5 for loss and a forced fumble. Landon Hendricks has 50 tackles, with 14.5 for loss, 3.5 sacks, and four fumble recoveries. Lane Webster has 30 tackles with 13 for loss and two sacks. Bryson Chase has 21 tackles, a forced fumble, a recovery, and a blocked kick. Brycen Peterman has 15 tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble, and four recoveries.

Both the offense and defense rank eighth in the division.

Bixby

Sandite alumnus Loren Montgomery is in his 11th year leading the Spartans, with an 87-38 record at Bixby and a 96-39 mark in his career. Since the creation of Class 6A-II in 2014, the Spartans have played for the gold ball all six years, and have won five of them. They haven’t lost a game since the 2018 season-opener and their 30-game win streak ranks 10th in the nation. They are ranked 49th in the country by MaxPreps.

The Spartans opened the season with a 34-0 shutout of Union, then won a 42-35 shootout with Jenks. They dominated Bartlesville 74-7 and then-5A No. 1 Carl Albert 56-14 in a battle of defending State Champs. The Titans have won the past four-straight 5A titles. Bixby is coming off a surprisingly-close 24-13 win over No.5 Choctaw. The Yellowjackets held the Spartans to their lowest-scoring output since the 2018 Semifinals.

Senior quarterback Mason Williams is 92-133-1109-2 passing this season with 14 touchdowns, while junior running back Braylin Presley is 92-788 on the ground with 13 scores, and is 30-295 receiving with four more. Zach Blankenship is also a rushing threat with 25 carries for 143 yards and three TDs. They have the No. 2 scoring offense in 6A-II.

Jack Puckett, Connor Stacy, Beau Bertelli, and Ky Roller lead the team in tackles for loss. The Spartan defense has made only eight sacks this season, and forced only one fumble, with two recoveries and five interceptions. They have also played a brutally tough schedule, however, against several top offenses. Their defense ranks third in the division in points allowed.

Special teams are also solid in Bixby. The return team averages 20.4 yards on kicks and 6.2 on punts. Connor Nolan is 30-of-30 on PATs and 2-of-3 on field goals.

The Series

The Spartans lead the series 18-12, and have won the last six-straight meetings. At the beginning of the 6A split, the two teams met in the playoffs for three-straight years. Bixby beat the Sandites in the 2014 and 2016 semifinals. The Sandites shut out Bixby 20-0 in the 2015 regular season, but the Spartans got revenge 38-28 in the State Championship.

Bixby’s current six-game streak is the longest win streak in series history. Sand Springs has won three in a row on two separate occasions. Sand Springs’s biggest win was 33-7 in 1994, and Bixby’s was 75-0 last year, which also happened to be the worst Sandite defeat in 95 years. The lowest-scoring game was a 5-3 Sandite win in 1984, and the highest-scoring game was a 48-35 Spartan win in 2010.

CPHS Football: Booker T. Washington shuts out Sand Springs 49-0

The Class 6A-II No. 7 ranked Booker T. Washington High School football team (4-2, 2-1) rolled to a dominant 49-0 shutout of No. 5 Sand Springs (4-2, 2-1) Friday night at S.E. Williams Stadium. If there’s a takeaway for the Sandites, it’s that Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Charles Page High School got off to a fast start this season and after losing a close one to the No. 1 team in 5A they upset the top-ranked team in Arkansas 4A and dominated their first two district matches. But despite the hype, the Sandites are still in their first year under a mostly-new coaching staff, while Washington is a blue blood program with a State Championship as recently as 2017.

Sandite success is coming. They’ve already doubled their win count from last season with a couple more favored matchups to come and a strong possibility of a post-season appearance. But Rome wasn’t built in a day.

A Sandite offense that averaged 130 rushing yards per game was held to only 40. Ty Pennington was 3-of-14 passing for 17 yards and two interceptions. They averaged 14 first downs over their first five games but only came up with three against the Hornets. A defense that only allowed 297 yards per game allowed 459.

Washington scored on six of eleven possessions, and were four-of-five in the first half. Sophomore running back Deon McKinney Jr. scored the opening touchdown on a 7-yard run and added a 29-yard score in the second period to put his team up 21-0. He finished the evening with 19 carries for 99 yards.

Demetrius Prudom caught only two passes on the evening, but he made the most of them. On his first target he broke a tackle and ran it in for a 50-yard score to make it 14-0 early in the second period. Sophomore quarterback Lathan Boone also connected with Jordan Drew for a 36-yard touchdown and a 35-0 lead shortly before the half.

The Hornet defense was beyond potent. University of Arkansas-commit Keuan Parker made an interception to set up McKinney’s second score. Amondre Tiger strip-sacked Pennington with three-minutes left in the half and Prudom returned it 25-yards for a score, then Ahmad Scott made a pick just two plays later to set up Drew’s touchdown reception. Issac Covington got a fumble recovery in the third quarter.

The Sandite defense also had moments of greatness, forcing one punt and three turnovers on downs, including a goal-line stand on the Hornets’ opening possession of the second half. Boone connected on a 16-yard touchdown strike to Jalen Teague on their next drive and finished the evening 19-of-26 for 287 yards.

Jackson Marsh was a perfect seven-for-seven kicking extra points in the game, but fell short on a 45-yard field goal attempt early in the fourth quarter. Covington ran in an 8-yard score with 3:16 left to play. The last score gave the Hornets their biggest win ever over Sand Springs and their fifth-straight in the series.

Sandite Football will have another brutal match-up Thursday at 7:00 p.m. with a district home game against No. 1 Bixby (5-0, 2-0). Booker T. will travel to No. 16 Putnam City West (0-3, 0-1) Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

CPHS Football: Booker T. Washington leads Sand Springs 35-0 at Half

The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School football team (4-1, 2-0) is riding a three-game win streak, but that is in jeopardy after a dominant 35-0 first half beat down by No. 7 Booker T. Washington (3-2, 1-1).

The potent Hornet defense held Sand Springs to only three first downs in the first half, secured three takeaways, and scored on a fumble return, while the Hornet offense scored on four out of five possessions.

Washington gave Sand Springs great field position with only a 15-yard kick to start the game, but after picking up a first down they stalled out at the Hornet 48 and punted for a touchback. The home team responded with a 14-play 80-yard drive to take the lead. Sango Whitehorn made a third-and-one stop for the Sandites at their 7-yard line, but the Hornets gave the ball to Deon McKinney Jr. on fourth down, who ran it in for the score.

The next Sandite drive was three-and-out, and Washington needed only seven plays this time to march 77 yards. Lathan Boone connected with Demitrius Boone who broke tackles for a 50-yard score to make it 14-0 early in the second period.

On the second play of the Sandites’ ensuing drive, Ty Pennington’s pass was deflected up and University of Arkansas-commit Keuan Parker won the battle for the interception. Three plays later and McKinney ran in a 29-yard score.

The Hornets forced another quick three-and-out, but their offense stalled out at the Sandite 37. This time Sand Springs actually got two first downs and pushed the ball 26 yards before Amondre Tiger forced a fumble and Demitrius Prudom returned it 25 yards for a score.

Once again Sand Springs only got off two plays before being picked off, this time by Ahmad Scott. That turnover set up a five-play 51-yard drive and Boone found Jordan Drew for 36 yards and a score. Junior kicker Jackson Marsh was a perfect five-for-five on PATs, including an 18-yarder after a false start.

Pennington finished the half 2-of-9 for 13 yards and two interceptions, while Boone was 11-of-15 for 209 yards and two touchdowns. McKinney racked up 50 yards on nine carries, while the Sandites amassed only 20 yards on 11 carries as a team.

CPHS Football Preview: Sandites travel to No. 7 Booker T. Washington Friday

The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School football team (4-1, 2-0) will ride a three-game win streak into Friday’s match-up with No. 7 Booker T. Washington (3-2, 1-1). The district road game will kick off at 7:00 p.m. at S.E. Williams Stadium.

As has become typical in the COVID-19 era, admittance to Friday’s game will be limited. The Sandite Athletic Department has been given 500 total tickets to disperse between visiting Sand Springs fans. 300 tickets are reserved for adults and 200 are for students/senior citizens (age 60+). Adult tickets are $7.00 and student/senior citizen tickets are $4.00.

Tickets will be sold for cash only and will be available at the Ed Dubie Field House beginning Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday’s ticket sales will be reserved for students and parents of senior football, cheer, dance, and band members, with a limit of two adult tickets and two student/senior citizen tickets per family. CPHS students will be able to purchase one ticket apiece. All remaining tickets will be available to the general public Wednesday and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

Both teams are in their first seasons under new Head Coaches. Sand Springs recruited Owasso Defensive Coordinator Bobby Klinck, while Washington promoted their Defensive Coordinator, Jonathan Brown. Brown helped coach the Hornets to a 6A-II State Title in 2017, while Klinck helped coach the Rams to 6A-I State Titles in 2017 and 2019. Sand Springs went 2-8 last season while Washington was 6-5.

Sand Springs started the season with a 21-17 win over 5A No. 9 Sapulpa (3-2). They narrowly lost 28-24 to 5A No. 1 Bishop Kelley (4-0) after leading till the final minute of the game, then bounced back with a huge 27-26 upset of Arkansas 4A No. 1 Shiloh Christian (4-1). In district play they won 35-10 against No. 13 Ponca City (1-3) and 45-14 against No. 11 Muskogee (0-4).

Washington won 28-10 against 6A-I No. 13 Southmoore (1-4) and 15-13 against No. 9 Del City (0-3) but lost 28-17 to 5A No. 3 Bishop McGuinness (4-1) and 26-22 to No. 6 Choctaw (3-2) before bouncing back 34-7 against No. 12 Bartlesville (1-4).

Sand Springs has the No. 7 ranked offense, No. 5 defense, and No. 6 margin of victory in Class 6A-II, while Washington has the No. 10 offense, No. 3 defense, and No. 8 margin of victory. Washington is also No. 3 in defensive scoring. If Sand Springs wins they’ll be 5-1 for the first time since 2014 while Washington will be 3-3 for the third straight year.

Sand Springs

Junior quarterback Ty Pennington is 77-136-1267-1 passing this season with eight touchdowns, and is 77-265 on the ground with another eight scores. He has scored 30 career touchdowns and amassed nearly 3,000 career offensive yards in under two seasons.

The Sandites struggled on the ground after Blake Jones was injured in the season opener, but he returned for the last two games and ran for a career-best 7.8 yards per carry against Muskogee. He is 36-234 on the season with three touchdowns.

The team has multiple capable kickers. Jonathan Daniels is 4-of-5 on PATs and 2-of-2 on field goals with a long of 26. Zach Heinen is 14-of-14 on PATs and 1-of-2 on field goals with a long of 28. Greg Reed has averaged 51.3 yards on kickoff and Heinen averages 31.2 yards per punt.

Keaton Campbell is 31-435 receiving with five touchdowns, Jamon Sisco is 16-371 with two scores, Jacob Blevins is 15-333 with one score, and Ryan Shoemaker is 11-111. Sisco also averages a team-best 31 yards per kick return with a 93-yard touchdown.

Drake Fain has 47 tackles, Sango Whitehorn has 46 tackles and three sacks, Landon Hendricks has 40 tackles and 3.5 sacks, and Brooks Dudley has 31 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

The team has excelled in turnovers this season. Brycen Peterman has two interceptions. Micah Calico and Dudley have one interception each. Campbell, Dudley, Fain, Peterman, and Bryson Chase have forced fumbles. Hendricks and Peterman have four fumble recoveries each. Chase, Daren Hawkins, and Dominic Ornelas have recovered one fumble apiece. Sisco has three blocked kicks, Whitehorn has two, and Chase has blocked one.

Booker T. Washington

The Hornets are great on defense. Ethan Grogan scored a pick six against Southmoore and Jahkobie Smith scored a safety against Del City. Jordan Drew made a pick against Choctaw, and returned a fumble 80 yards for a score against Bartlesville.

The team has been known to commit key errors on both offense and special teams. They allowed Del City and Bartlesville to return fumbles for touchdowns. Choctaw blocked two punts and returned one for a touchdown. Lathan Boone threw four interceptions to Bishop McGuinness and one was returned for a score. They also struggle with penalties.

Boone, receivers Micah Tease and Jalen Teague, and running back Jaiden Carroll are the guys to watch on offense. Arkansas-committed cornerback Keuan Parker leads the Hornet defense. They took a big loss in the season opener when five-star corner Gentry Williams tore his ACL.

The Series

The teams first met in 1986 and the Hornets doubled Sand Springs 42-21 on their way to a State Title, but the Sandites paid it back 15-12 the next year. The Hornets lead the series 16-7 overall and have won the past four meetings. The last time Sand Springs won was in 2015 when the Hornets won 17-14 in the regular season, but Sand Springs got revenge 30-23 in the State Semifinals.

The four-game streak for the Hornets is the longest in the series. Sand Springs has only won back-to-back games once against Washington, from 2012 to 2013. Washington’s biggest win was 48-7 in 1992, and Sand Springs’s biggest win was 21-7 in 2012.
