CPHS Football Halftime Report: Sandites shut out 28-0 by No. 2 Bixby

The Class 6A-II No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School football team (2-5, 1-3) gave up a 28-0 first-half shutout to the No. 2 Bixby Spartans (6-1, 4-0) Thursday evening at Memorial stadium.

The Spartans needed only seven plays to travel 57 yards for the first score of the game. Sophomore quarterback Mason Williams connected with Cade Cavender from 33 yards out on their opening possession.

Sand Springs converted three first downs on their opening drive but stalled out at midfield and had to punt. Bixby was even more lethal on their next drive, traveling 89 yards in seven plays with a fifty-yard scoring run from Braden Roller.

Caden Pennington threw his fourth interception of the season on the next drive but the Sandite defense came up big and forced their first punt of the night.

The Sandites’ next drive was also fruitless and the Spartans scored just a minute into the second quarter on a 53 yard run from freshman Braylin Presley.

The home team made their first red zone penetration after Pennington broke a pair of tackles for an incredible fifteen-yard run on fourth down. Unfortunately, he threw his second interception of the night at the one-yard line.

Clayton Barbour made a 32-yard interception return, setting up a five-play 67-yard scoring march for the Spartans. Roller ran it in from one yard out for the final score of the half and a 28-0 lead.

Pennington was 4-9-82-2 passing in the first half with eleven carries for 36 yards to lead the offense. Williams led the Spartans with a 6-9-125-0 passing performance.

CPHS Football Preview: Sandites host No. 2 Bixby Thursday

The Class 6A-II No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School football team (2-5, 1-3) notched their first district win 35-14 at Ponca City last week. The Sandites are all but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, though they could technically still make it if they win out.

To do so they’ll need three-straight upsets, starting with No. 2 Bixby (6-1, 4-0) this Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

Last Week

The Sandites snapped a four-game losing streak with a dominant 35-14 performance in Ponca City (0-7, 0-4). Caden Pennington was 14-22-165-1 passing and 8-64 on the ground for four total touchdowns. Trey Wilkerson led the rush with eight carries for 75 yards and a score. Jacob Snodgrass and Braden Foster each had five receptions for 51 yards, with Snodgrass hauling in a touchdown. Jaden Weiser went 5/5 on PATs.

Hayden Cramer and JT Bristow led a successful defense that racked up 29 yards on eight tackles for loss with four zero-gain stops. The Wildcats managed only 3.5 yards per play and 2.7 yards per carry, while Luke Bratcher and Lucas Adcock provided excellent pass coverage, limiting Justin Andrews to six completions on eighteen attempts. Ponca was forced to punt four times, gave up four turnovers on downs, and was limited to only six plays and eighteen yards per possession.

The Spartans thumped Sapulpa 65-6 in their second-biggest win of the season with a 30-0 first half shutout.

This Season

The Sandites started strong, despite an opening week loss to a tough Texas program. They easily handled a still winless Putnam City team, but things took a downward turn from there. After an unsurprising loss to a powerhouse Arkansas team they suffered three come-from-behind losses. They have no problem scoring and no problem getting stops, but both sides of the ball have a hard time finishing. The Sandites own the No. 9 offense in Class 6A-II.

Bixby is riding a six-game win streak after a 28-14 season-opening loss to Jenks. Since then they’ve recorded two shutouts and hung half a hundred on three different opponents.

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 5-6 season, led by twelfth year Head Coach Dustin Kinard with a 62-65 record. They are riding an all-time program best streak of six-straight seasons with playoff berths. They have been in Class 6A-II since its inception in 2014. The Sandites hold one gold ball, winning the 2A State title in 1966.

The Spartans are coming off an 8-5 season, led by ninth-year Head Coach Loren Montgomery (72-39), a product of Sand Springs during the L.D. Baines era. The Spartans won their first three State Titles in 2014, 2015, and 2016 and came in runner-up last year, all at the 6A-II level.

The Series (Bixby 16-12)

The two teams first met in 1922 during the fourth year of Sandite football when Bixby edged out A.R. Bateman’s Sandites 19-14. Sand Springs won the next two meetings in 1926 and 1927 and the schools didn’t battle again till 1980.

Sand Springs and Bixby split a six-year series in the 1980s, with the lowest-scoring game occurring in 1984 with a 5-3 Sandite victory.

Sand Springs won a 5-3 series in the 1990s. The only overtime game came in 1992 with the Spartans winning 20-17, then Sand Springs notched the first shut out in 1997 at 19-0.

The Spartans have dominated the modern era 9-2 since the series was resurrected in 2010, when the Spartans won a 48-35 shootout in the highest-scoring affair yet.

Things have been particularly competitive since the inception of 6A-II and the teams have met three times in the post-season. The Sandites made their first Semifinal appearance since 1997 in 2014 but were missing their starting kicker, starting quarterback, leading receiver, and the two leading tacklers. They were knocked out 41-14 by the Spartans after losing only 34-31 two weeks prior.

The Sandites shocked the Spartans in 2015 with a 20-0 senior night shutout, their first shutout loss since 2008. They got payback in the post season with a 38-28 State Championship win in the Sandites’ first title game since 1966.

Bixby won the next three meetings after that and their four-straight win streak is the longest streak in the series. They knocked Sand Springs out of the semifinals again in 2016 and won last year’s match 41-21.

CPHS Football: Sandites roll Ponca 35-14, Pennington scores four TDs

(Ponca City) - The Class 6A-II No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School football team (2-5, 1-3) picked up their first district win against No. 15 Ponca City (0-7, 0-4) Friday night at Sullins Stadium.

Both of the Wildcats’ touchdowns came in the final seconds of the halves, and the Sandites dominated on all fronts.

Sand Springs scored on five of nine possessions with an average drive of 43 yards in only six plays. They only punted once and gave up a turnover on downs, a fumble, and an interception that resulted in a scoring drive from Ponca. The Wildcats only mustered six plays for eighteen yards per possession, scoring twice on ten drives with four punts and three turnovers on downs. The Sandite defense allowed only 3.5 yards per play, while the offense racked up 7.2 in a balanced offense.

Ponca punted their first two drives and the Sandites gave up a turnover on downs before scoring on a twenty-yard quarterback keeper from Caden Pennington. Jaden Weiser made the extra point kick for a 7-0 first quarter lead.

Ponca almost had a successful drive early in the second quarter, making it as far as third-and-two at the Sandite thirteen-yard line, but a fumbled handoff resulted in a scoring Sandite possession. Sand Springs marched seventy yards and scored on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Pennington to Jacob Snodgrass.

The Wildcats made the mistake of going for a fourth-and-one from their own 46, and Jerret Haley bagged the quarterback for a turnover at the Ponca 40-yard line. Pennington made a forty-yard pass to Justin Roe on the first play and Weiser put the visitors up 21-0 with 4:36 in the half.

Sand Springs’s stellar defense gave up only three yards before forcing another punt, and the Sandites marched 35 yards before Pennington threw an interception to Justin Andrews.

Ponca City averted the first-half shutout with a six-play 53-yard march and scored on a thirteen-yard keeper from Andrews. Spencer Ball kicked the PAT for the final points of the half.

Trey Wilkerson scored on the opening drive of the second half with a 32-yard run, then Pennington scored on a one-play, one-yard drive after a muffed punt for a 35-7 lead to end the third quarter.

Ponca once again scored in the final moments of the half, traveling 53 yards in nine plays, capped by a one-yard keeper.

Pennington led the offense with a 14-22-165-1 passing performance and 8-64 ground game for four total touchdowns. Wilkerson was the leading rusher with eight carries for 75 yards. Snodgrass and Braden Foster both had five catches for 51 yards each. Hayden Cramer and JT Bristow led the defense in tackles.

The win was the Sandites’ seventh-straight against Ponca City and they hold a 26-18-1 series record. In the last seven meetings they’ve won by an average score of 45-15, including a 42-7 drubbing last year.

The Sandites will return to action with a Thursday home game against No. 2 Bixby (6-1, 4-0). The Sandites are all but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs after a rough 0-3 start, but can technically still make it to the post-season if they win out. They’ll need a pair of big upsets against the top-ranked team in the district and the defending State Champions to do so, however.

CPHS Football Halftime Report: Sandites lead Ponca City 21-7 at halftime

The Class 6A-II No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School football team (1-5, 0-3) is off to a hot start against No. 15 Ponca City (0-6, 0-3) with a 21-7 halftime lead.

The Wildcats didn’t score their first touchdown till there was only twenty seconds left in the half, set up by a Caden Pennington interception.

Sand Springs gave up only four yards on the home team’s opening drive and marched their corresponding possession to the Wildcat 31-yard line before giving up a turnover on downs. Ponca once again recorded only four yards on their second possession, and this time the Sandites hit pay dirt on their next drive.

Pennington and Trey Wilkerson put together a seven-play 76-yard drive and scored on a twenty-yard keeper with 2:21 in the first quarter. Jaden Weiser kicked the point-after for a 7-0 lead.

The Wildcats put together their first semi-successful drive spanning the first two quarters, marching 49 yards in twelve plays to the Sandite red zone before an unsportsmanlike penalty pushed them back to fourth and fifteen at the 27. A fumbled handoff resulted in a turnover on downs at the 30.

Sand Springs made another triumphant trip to the end zone, traveling seventy yards in ten plays, capped by a 23-yard touchdown pass from Pennington to Jacob Snodgrass. Weiser’s kick made it 14-0 with 6:02 to play.

Sand Springs’s stellar defense gave up only three yards before forcing another punt, and the Sandites marched 35 yards before Pennington threw an interception to Justin Andrews.

Snodgrass made an incredible 42-yard kick return on the next play, but the Sandites were pushed back to their own 33 on a holding call and ended the half without a snap.

Pennington was 8-15-114-1 in the first half and led the ground game with four carries for 47 yards.

The Sandites are riding a six-year win streak against Ponca City and hold a 25-18-1 series record. In the last six meetings they’ve won by an average score of 46-16, including a 42-7 drubbing last year.

CPHS Football Preview: Sandites ride six-year win streak into Ponca City meeting

University of Central Oklahoma freshman Payton Scott ran for 284 yards and five touchdowns on only 25 carries in last year’s lopsided 42-7 victory.

The Class 6A-II No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School football team (1-5, 0-3) is still looking for their first district win, though at this point they’ll need to win out to make the playoffs.

The Sandites will have a good shot at snapping their four-game losing streak when they travel to a winless Ponca City (0-6, 0-3) Friday at 7:00 p.m.
