CPHS Football Halftime Report: Sandites lead Ponca City 21-7 at halftime

The Class 6A-II No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School football team (1-5, 0-3) is off to a hot start against No. 15 Ponca City (0-6, 0-3) with a 21-7 halftime lead.

The Wildcats didn’t score their first touchdown till there was only twenty seconds left in the half, set up by a Caden Pennington interception.

Sand Springs gave up only four yards on the home team’s opening drive and marched their corresponding possession to the Wildcat 31-yard line before giving up a turnover on downs. Ponca once again recorded only four yards on their second possession, and this time the Sandites hit pay dirt on their next drive.

Pennington and Trey Wilkerson put together a seven-play 76-yard drive and scored on a twenty-yard keeper with 2:21 in the first quarter. Jaden Weiser kicked the point-after for a 7-0 lead.

The Wildcats put together their first semi-successful drive spanning the first two quarters, marching 49 yards in twelve plays to the Sandite red zone before an unsportsmanlike penalty pushed them back to fourth and fifteen at the 27. A fumbled handoff resulted in a turnover on downs at the 30.

Sand Springs made another triumphant trip to the end zone, traveling seventy yards in ten plays, capped by a 23-yard touchdown pass from Pennington to Jacob Snodgrass. Weiser’s kick made it 14-0 with 6:02 to play.

The Wildcats made the mistake of going for a fourth-and-one from their own 46, and Jerret Haley bagged the quarterback for a turnover at the Ponca 40-yard line. Pennington made a forty-yard pass to Justin Roe on the first play and Weiser put the visitors up 21-0 with 4:36 in the half.

Sand Springs’s stellar defense gave up only three yards before forcing another punt, and the Sandites marched 35 yards before Pennington threw an interception to Justin Andrews.

Ponca City averted the first-half shutout with a six-play 53-yard march and scored on a thirteen-yard keeper. Spencer Ball kicked the PAT for the final points of the half.

Snodgrass made an incredible 42-yard kick return on the next play, but the Sandites were pushed back to their own 33 on a holding call and ended the half without a snap.

Pennington was 8-15-114-1 in the first half and led the ground game with four carries for 47 yards.

The Sandites are riding a six-year win streak against Ponca City and hold a 25-18-1 series record. In the last six meetings they’ve won by an average score of 46-16, including a 42-7 drubbing last year.

The Class 6A-II No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School football team (1-5, 0-3) is still looking for their first district win, though at this point they’ll need to win out to make the playoffs.

The Sandites will have a good shot at snapping their four-game losing streak when they travel to a winless Ponca City (0-6, 0-3) Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Last Week

The Sandites had homecoming spoiled 29-27 by Bartlesville despite owning a 20-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. Caden Pennington led the offense with a 6-13-138-1 passing performance for three touchdowns and a 13-95 run game. Daren Hawkins caught four passes for 90 yards and two scores and Braden Foster caught two throws for 48 yards and a touchdown. Joel Mackey carried 10-69 for one touchdown and Jaden Weiser was three-for-three on extra point kicks. Luke Bratcher had a forced fumble, Kaden Glass had a recovery, and Mackey blocked a PAT.

Ponca had their second-biggest offensive showing of the season, scoring twenty points against Bixby, but also gave up 57 in their worst defensive allowance.

This Season

The Sandites started strong, despite an opening week loss to a strong Texas program. They easily handled a still winless Putnam City team, but things took a downward turn from there. After an unsurprising loss to a powerhouse Arkansas team they suffered three come-from-behind losses. They have no problem scoring and no problem getting stops, but both sides of the ball have a hard time finishing.

Ponca is riding an eleven game losing streak that that Sandites kicked off last year. They’ve played a fairly tough schedule including two undefeated 5A teams and average 13.5 points per game.

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 5-6 season, led by twelfth year Head Coach Dustin Kinard with a 61-65 record. They are riding an all-time program best streak of six-straight seasons with playoff berths. They have been in Class 6A-II since its inception in 2014. The Sandites hold one gold ball, winning the 2A State title in 1966.

Ponca City coming off a 1-9 season and is led by first-year Head Coach Scott Harmon with a 127-55 record in sixteen seasons at lower classifications. The Wildcats haven’t had a winning season since 2005. They have never won a football title.

The Series (Sand Springs 25-18-1)

The Ponca City series was an exciting one from the very beginning. The first installment was in 1952 when the Wildcats knocked Cecil Hankins’s District Champions out of the playoffs in a home Thanksgiving Day battle. The next year resulted in a 7-7 tie. In 1954, with future MLB 3X World Series champion Jerry Adair at quarterback, the Sandites rallied from a 20-0 deficit to a 21-20 victory.

The series took a hiatus until 1961, when Ponca won handily, then stalled again till 1978. Sand Springs became the first team to win back-to-back meetings in 1981 with a 31-24 triple overtime win on the road.

The Wildcats won three in a row from 1984 to 1986, then Sand Springs won four in a row from 1987 to 1990, including the series’ first shutouts of 20-0 in 1988 and 28-0 in 1990. The Sandites won another streak of four from 1996-1999, then Ponca dominated from 2000 to 2005.

The Wildcats scored 40+ points in three-straight games during the dark ages of Sandite football. Sand Springs lost 28-straight games from 2001-2004, including a 41-0 shutout in 2004 and the Wildcats’ most lopsided victory at 48-2 in 2003.

Brad Odom’s Sandites snapped the losing streak in 2006 with a 21-0 shutout and they won five-straight from there. 2008 saw a wild 45-42 Sandite shootout victory. Sand Springs went 1-9 in 2010, but found their lone victory 35-28 against Ponca.

The Wildcats’ last victory came in 2011, and the Sandites are riding a six-game win streak. Sand Springs scored a series-best 57-7 win in 2013, and the highest-scoring meeting between the two teams came in 2016 at 56-35. Last year Payton Scott scored five touchdowns in a 42-7 road win.

CPHS Football: Bruins sabotage Sandite Homecoming 29-27, presented by Kelly Smith - Farmers Insurance

For the third week in a row the Charles Page High School football team blew a halftime lead and gave up a down-to-the-wire heart-breaker. The 29-27 Homecoming loss to Bartlesville dropped the Sandites to 1-5 on the season and likely knocked the Sandites out of playoff contention.

Technically they could still qualify for the post-season, but they would need to win out and upset the two top teams in the district. A win over Bartlesville was desperately needed.

The Sandites racked up three first downs on a methodical first drive to the Bruin 37 yard line. Joel Mackey took a handoff on a crucial third-and-eleven. He suffered a hard hit around the first down marker, but recovered with a pirouette and a drunken pirate stumble into the endzone for the first score of the game. Jaden Weiser’s point-after kick sailed true to make it 7-0 at the 8:40 mark.

Both sides of the ball were effective for the Sandites in the next few minutes as the defense forced a quick three-and-out and the offense scored in only four plays. Senior quarterback Caden Pennington hit sophomore standout Daren Hawkins from 38 yards out for the 13-0 lead, but a two-point play was no good.

The Bruins found their footing from there, scoring four plays later on a 49-yard pass from Ben Winters to Nicolus Tessier. Dylan McCoy’s kick cut it to 13-7 with 4:54 in the first quarter, but Pennington restored the two-score lead with a 34-yarder to Hawkins and Weiser put back another kick to make it 20-7.

Then came Bartlesville’s long climb back.

Laken Clowdus scored on a 24-yard run on the opening drive of the second quarter, though the extra-point was no good. The Bruins made a fourth-down stand at their own 25 and marched to the Sandite red zone, but Sand Springs held them to fourth-and-goal from the five and a field goal attempt from McCoy sailed wide.

The Sandites took a knee with a 20-13 halftime lead that would soon evaporate.

Luke Bratcher forced a fumble for freshman Kaden Glass to recover on the Bruins’ first possession of the second half, but Mackey fumbled the ball right back on the very next play.

Bartlesville returned to the red zone soon after and Taton Hopkins took over kicking duties with a 34-yard field goal.

The Bruins got another turnover on the Sandites’ next possession as Elijah Williams ripped the ball from Pennington’s arms and almost took it to the house. Only one Sandite stood between Williams and the end zone, but tailback Trey Wilkerson made the tackle to save the score. It wouldn’t matter, however, as the Bruins scored four minutes later on a one-yard keeper. The Bruins had their first lead of the night at 23-20.

After trading off punts the Sandites got back out in front with 3:29 to play, scoring on a nineteen-yard pass from Pennington to Braden Foster. Weiser’s kick made it 27-23.

An explosive performance from Clowdus marched the ball to the one yard-line, setting up Winters for the game-winning score. Mackey blocked the extra point and Pennington made a 29-yard pass to Foster, setting up a Hail Mary scenario at the 48-yard line with five seconds left. Shane Simpson ended the game with an interception to seal the victory.

Pennington ended the night 6-13-138-1 passing and led the ground game with thirteen carries for 95 yards. Winters was 16-22-221-0 for the Bruins. Hayden Cramer led the defense in total tackles with twelve, but Bratcher led in unassisted takedowns with eight, including a five-yard sack.

Sand Springs Football (1-5, 0-3) will return to action Friday at 7:00 p.m. with a road game in Ponca City (0-6, 0-3).

The Class 6A-II No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School football team (1-4, 0-2) is still looking for their first district win, making Friday’s Homecoming bout with No. 12 Bartlesville (1-4, 0-2) all the more crucial.

The two teams have identical records and both need to start winning ASAP if they hope to make the playoffs.

While the game will be played Friday, the Sand Springs Homecoming Parade will be held Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the downtown Triangle District. Following the parade, there will be a prayer rally for Head Coach Dustin Kinard at the Ed Dubie Field House at 7:30 p.m. Kinard was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The Homecoming Queen will be crowned prior to the game on Friday.

Last Week

Sand Springs had an excellent showing in a home game against Muskogee and led 27-24 heading into the fourth quarter before the Roughers rattled off 21 unanswered points to close the night. Caden Pennington scored on a 29-yard run and a 60-yard pass to Daren Hawkins. Joel Mackey scored on a 29-yard run and Trey Wilkerson scored on a 27-yard run.

Jaden Weiser was three-for-three on extra points. Pennington was 5-14-80-0 passing and Mackey led the ground at 15-100. The offensive line opened up huge blocks all night long and the defense was solid as well. The Roughers began to shut down the ground game in the third, however, and the Sandites failed to adjust.

DeAndre Young ran for 284 yards and five touchdowns in the Bruins’ 63-58 shootout loss at Sapulpa, and Laken Clowdus ran for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

They have been in Class 6A-II since its inception in 2014. The Sandites hold one gold ball, winning the 2A State title in 1966.

Bartlesville is coming off a 1-8 season, led by first year Head Coach Lee Blankenship who holds a 61-30 career record. The Bruins have been in Class 6A-II since its inception but haven’t made the playoffs since a 10-2 season in 2015. They have never won a State Title in football.

The Series (Bartlesville 38-25)

The Bartlesville-Sand Springs series dates back to the very first year of Sand Springs football, when the Sandites defeated Bartlesville Central High 19-7 under Head Coach Ivan Grover. Sand Springs High School and the Yellowjackets split the series 3-3 before Central High School was converted to a junior high in 1939.

College High, which lasted from 1939 to 1982, won an intermittent series with the Sandites 10-4. The Sooner High Spartans (1966-1982) also led their series 6-3.

The rivalry renewed in 1982, the very first year after Sooner High and College High unified as Bartlesville High School under a new mascot, the Bruin. The two teams met annually through 1997 and the Bruins led that series 11-5 including a seven-year win streak. After a two-year hiatus, they met again from 2000 to present and the Sandites lead that run 10-8.

Sand Springs won the last two meetings handily, 55-13 last year and 47-28 in 2016. They won a 28-27 Homecoming thriller in 2014 and a 34-0 Homecoming shutout in 2011. The Bruins haven’t beaten Sand Springs at Memorial Stadium since 2009. The Sandites have shut out Bartlesville eight times in program history, and have been shut out ten times.

Last year Payton Scott, currently redshirting at the University of Central Oklahoma, set the all time school record with a 47-507, 7TD rushing performance in a 55-13 win over Bartlesville.
