CPHS Basketball Season Rewind: 2018-2019 continues recent tradition of Sandite excellence

The 2018-2019 Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team continued a recent tradition of team excellence before their season came to an end Saturday.

They fell one round short of the State Tournament, but even making the Area finals is something unheard of for Sandites just a few years ago. The team finished with a 17-9 record overall, and were 9-5 in the Frontier Valley Conference.

The Sandites hosted their first Regional Tournament since 2001 and won their first Regional title since 1956. Last season they made it to the State Tournament for the first time since 1963. It was the fifth-straight ten-win season for Sand Springs, the second-best record in the Eric Savage era, and they finished the year ranked fifth in Class 6A. Just six seasons ago the Sandites went 1-21 before Savage took the reigns.

This year’s team included five total seniors: Cale Savage, Cole Durkee, Kason Hughes, Jonathan Quier, and Sam Anderson. Savage and Durkee were the only senior starters. The Class of 2019 went 62-41 in their careers and 30-26 in conference, finishing fourth in the Frontier Valley two straight years.

The team averaged 61.96 points per game, the best offense of the Savage era, and had the best Home Court record at 7-2.

Junior Davon Richardson led the team in numerous statistical categories with 15.7 points, 2.4 offensive rebounds, 6.1 defensive rebounds, 2 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game. He led the team in scoring on fifteen occasions with six double-doubles and a season-best performance of 26 points against Northwest Classen. He also had the team’s best field-goal percentage at 48.9%.

Cale Savage was the most accurate player on the team from all three ranges. He shot 39.8% on threes, 63.0% on twos, and 78.5% at the free throw line. He was second on the team in total scoring with 12 points per game and had the best single-game performance, scoring 35 against the Hoops For Christ Warriors.

The Sandites will return three regular starters and four players with starting experience, as well as 63% of their scoring power next season. This season brought Coach Savage’s career record to 387-164 (.702) overall, and 82-71 (.536) at Sand Springs.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites end season 55-44 against defending State Champs, presented by Kelly Smith Farmers Insurance

The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ Basketball team (17-9) won the third and fourth quarters of their Saturday night playoff game in Skiatook, but a nineteen-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome. The Sandites ended their season in a 55-44 loss to the defending State Champions, No. 16 Putnam City North (14-13) in the Area Consolation Finals.

Coverage is sponsored by Kelly Smith Farmers Insurance Agency.

The Panthers started and ended the first period on 9-0 runs, broken up by back-to-back layups from Davon Richardson for an 18-4 lead. Micah Thomas scored four free throws in the first period and kicked off the second with a layup before Cale Savage ended the eleven-point run with a three.

Sand Springs fared slightly better in the second period, cutting the deficit back to 22-11 with free throws from Richardson and Marlo Fox, but the Panthers ended on an eight-point run for the 30-11 halftime advantage. Putnam came away with seven steals and five offensive rebounds in the half.

The Sandites shut that down in the second half, giving up only one more steal and one more offensive rebound, but it was too late. They won the third period 15-9 to keep the game alive. Richardson, Cole Durkee, and Jaeden Hurd kicked off the period, and Durkee and Savage both hit threes to end the stanza 39-26.

Durkee hit a three and Marlo Fox followed it with a layup to cut it back to single digits with 3:45 to play. Thomas hit two from the stripe, Fox sank a three, then Jeff Wanko, Kaylon Russell, and Thomas combined for five. Fox drew his fifth foul at the 2:03 mark and the team was unable to make headway from then on.

Three Sandites finished in double digits. Richardson finished with twelve, Cale Savage had eleven, and Durkee had ten. Only one Panther broke double, but Thomas totaled a game-high 28 to outscore the Sandites’ top two combined.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites fall 73-51 to Sapulpa at Area, presented by Kelly Smith - Farmers Insurance

Friday night’s Area Championship game had double the usual stakes as the winning team not only punched their ticket to the State Tournament, but got to do so against their biggest rivals.

Class 6A No. 4 ranked Sapulpa (21-4) prevailed 73-51 to improve to 2-1 against No. 5 Sand Springs (17-8) this season. The Sandites won their first meeting, but the Chieftains spoiled the Sandites’ regular season finale, and sabotaged their bid for an Area title.

Coverage of the game is sponsored by Kelly Smith Farmers Insurance Agency in Sand Springs. Located at 3973 South Highway 97 in the Springs Village shopping center, Smith brings the same passion to your family’s insurance needs that he brought to the State and Dual State Championship winning Sandite Wrestling program. Call 918-245-0100 for a quote today!

Sapulpa will advance to the State Tournament next Thursday, while the Sandites will get one more chance Saturday at 8:00 p.m. at Skiatook High School. They will play the winner of No. 9 Union (15-9) vs. No. 16 Putnam City North (12-13).

Sapulpa led for the majority of the first period, but always with the Sandites nipping at their heels. Cale Savage gave Sand Springs their first lead, 11-10, at the 3:30 mark with a three-pointer, and did it again just a minute later. Marlo Fox tied it at 15-15 with 1:36 to play, but the Chieftains ended the period 20-15 with a three from Jayde Duncan.

The Chieftains maintained their three-point advantage through most of the second period, but kept their foes in contention with numerous fouls. Josh Minney briefly tied it at 24-24 with a three-point play, but Hunter Hoggatt immediately put his team back out front with a long three and Camryn Dennis added to it with a three-point play of his own. Richardson put back a pair of shots from Cole Durkee and Cason Savage laid up to cut it back to 33-30, but Hoggatt and Vernon Durant rattled off three from the stripe and Dennis dunked to take a 38-30 advantage into the locker room.

Sand Springs never led in the second half.

Te’Zohn Taft gave his team their first double-digit advantage on the opening play of the half. CPHS Basketball Preview presented by Kelly Smith - Farmers Insurance

Last week the Charles Page High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both won their Regional Championships to advance to the Area playoffs in the winners’ bracket.

This weekend they will look to punch their tickets to State. Sandite Pride News will be bringing you full coverage of Thursday and Friday’s games, sponsored by Kelly Smith Farmers Insurance Agency.

Located in the Springs Village shopping center, Kelly Smith Insurance covers home, auto, life, renters, business, and more. Visit them at 3973 South Highway 97 in Sand Springs, or reach out by phone at 918-241-0100.

Both teams only need to win one more game to advance to the State Tournament, and both can afford to lose once without being eliminated from contention.

Both teams made it to State last year. The girls won the Regional and Area Championships, while the boys placed second at Regionals and won the Area Consolation bracket. Both teams lost in the quarterfinals at State.

Girls

The No. 6 ranked Lady Sandites (20-4) will tip off Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Jenks High School against No. 3 Moore (19-5). The loser will take on the winner of Shawnee vs. Bartlesville Saturday in Claremore.

Sand Springs wrapped up the regular season with an undefeated Frontier Valley Conference title and they are riding a seven-game win streak. The Sandites hold the No. 6 offense and No. 14 defense in Class 6A, winning by an average score of 60-48.

Moore went 10-4 for third place in the Central Oklahoma Conference. The Lionesses lost their last two games of the regular season before winning their Regional. They own the No. 9 offense and No. 7 defense, winning by an average score of 60-44.
