CPHS Basketball: Sandites outlast Muskogee 58-42, Savage scores 16

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (7-1, 4-0) continued their undefeated Frontier Valley Conference streak with a dominant 58-42 win over Muskogee Tuesday night. Cale Savage led all scorers with sixteen points, followed by Cole Durkee with fourteen and Marlo Fox with eleven.

The Sandites missed their first ten shots, mostly put-back attempts, and gave up five points to James Brown before hitting paydirt on a layup from Davon Richardson. But after briefly trailing 7-2, they surged ahead with seven-straight points. Fox rattled off three for their first advantage, Marcus Newton tied it, but Durkee scored from two and three-point range to end the first period up 16-12.

Fox kicked off the second period with a layup but Muskogee kept it tight with a layup from Jordan Bradley and a deep ball from Kaunor Ashley. Savage made his way into the books with a three, but the Roughers reclaimed the lead with seven-straight before Durkee hit a three to tie it at 24. Brown drained the clock before scoring and Muskogee took a 27-24 advantage into the locker room.

Savage gave his team the lead with back-to-back threes in the third, but the team took a loss when Richardson drew a fourth foul early on. Minney scored two and assisted Jaden Hurd, then Savage pulled up for another three for their first two-score lead of the game. Sand Springs ended on a six-point run with goals from Durkee and Fox.

Up 43-35 to start the final stanza, Minney added a pair of free throws for their first double-digit lead, then sent a pass to Daren Hawkins for three. Fox hit a two and Savage scored four-straight free throws for their biggest lead of the night at 56-40. Brown added two more from the charity stripe, then Durkee capped the night off.

Sand Springs will return to action at the Duncan Holiday Invitational, while the Roughers (2-5, 1-3) will take the rest of the year off before facing No. 13 Jenks (6-1, 2-1) after the new year.

CPHS Basketball Preview: Sand Springs at Muskogee

The Charles Page High School boys and girls basketball teams will return to the court Tuesday evening in Muskogee. The game will be the last of the year for the girls, while the boys still have one holiday tournament left. Both Sandite squads remain undefeated in Frontier Valley Conference action.

The No. 8 ranked Sand Springs boys (6-1, 3-0) suffered their first loss of the season at the Memorial Veteran’s Arena Invitational, 71-50 against Southwest Christian Academy, but defeated the Wichita Defenders 76-65 and the HFC Warriors 70-65 in overtime. On Tuesday they also rolled over Bartlesville 64-42.

Muskogee (2-4, 1-2) played only one game last week and fell 77-50 to undefeated Sapulpa. The Sandites edged out Muskogee 57-52 earlier this year.

James Brown has been the leading scorer for Muskogee this season, and the Rougher put up 23 points against the Sandites in their first meeting this season. Peyton Clark and Cameron Clemmons also broke double digits against Sand Springs.

Davon Richardson leads the Sandites in scoring with 15.8 points per game, but three other Sandites are also averaging double digits. Cale Savage averages 13.3, Josh Minney has 11.1, and Marlo Fox has 11.

The Sandites are fourteenth in 6A defensively and fifteenth offensively, winning by an average score of 63 to 55. Muskogee is 25th offensively and twentieth defensively, losing their games by an average of 59 to 51.

Head Coach Eric Savage (376-156) is 5-3 against Muskogee in his time at Sand Springs, but only 1-3 on the Roughers’ home court. Last year was the first time his Sandites won in Muskogee.

The No. 8 Lady Sandites (5-2, 3-0) should have little trouble in their rematch with Muskogee (1-4, 0-3) after throttling the Lady Roughers 109-39 earlier this season. Just last week they knocked off the defending Conference Champs from Bartlesville 66-48. Muskogee is coming off a 74-44 loss to Sapulpa.

The Sandites host an array of Division I talent, led by Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter with 24.3 points per game. Destiny Johnson is also averaging double digits at 14.3. Mashyla Swain was the only Lady Rougher to break double digits in their earlier meeting with Sand Springs, scoring ten.

The Lady Sandites hold the No. 2 offense in 6A with 74 points per game and have the fourth-largest margin of victory at 21.3 points. Muskogee is thirtieth in offense and 31st in defense, losing by an average score of 74-38.

Sand Springs is 4-0 against Muskogee since 2016 and their last three meetings have been won by thirty points or more.

CPHS Basketball: Cale Savage scores 33 points in 70-65 overtime victory

The Hoops For Christ Warriors committed 31 fouls, Sand Springs scored 31 points from the free throw line, and Cale Savage scored a career-best 33 points to secure the 70-65 overtime victory Saturday evening at the Tulsa Memorial Veterans Arena Invitational

Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School (6-1) was without their inside man in Davon Richardson. They trailed 33-20 at halftime and didn’t manage to take the lead till overtime.

Marlo Fox scored the opening basket, but the Sandites came up dry on their next five possessions before Fox scored again, and trailed 10-4. Free throws kept the Sandites in contention, going 6-for-6 at the stripe and 3-for-13 in the field. Cale Savage gave his team a spark with a steal and layup late in the quarter, but they trailed 23-12 at the buzzer.

The second period was no friendlier to the Sandites. Josh Minney hit a layup and a trio of free throws. Savage made a three-point play, and the Warriors took a 33-20 lead into the locker room. Sand Springs went 0-of-10 from outside the arc in the first half and was out-rebounded 23 to 9. 6’6’” junior Traejon Davis led all scorers with sixteen points in the half.

Minney kicked off the second half with a steal and pass to Cole Durkee for two, then Durkee assisted Savage with a three. Minney put back another three-point attempt from Savage to cut the gap to 37-27, then Fox scored through a foul to get it back in single-digit territory.

Durkee was next to score from outside the arc, then Jaden Hurd added two from the charity stripe to make it a one-score game before Davis broke up the nine-point run. Savaged hit another deep ball, then Daren Hawkins scored on a steal for the first tie score since 2-2.

Davis put his team back out front with a three-point play, but the Warriors took a loss when 6’0” senior Jayden Hill fouled out with 1:21 left in the third quarter. By the end of the stanza the Warriors led only 46-41.

Davis kicked off the fourth period with a layup, Durkee and Fox hit back-to-back threes, then Hurd fouled out with 4:47 left, giving Davis a four-point play. It was a game of free throws for the duration, and Savage tied it up at 56-56 with four-straight. Trailing 59-57, Savage hit a layup and Davis missed a long three to force overtime.

Fox scored the first OT basket on a steal for the team’s first lead since the opening basket of regulation, then Davis fouled out with 1:28 left and Riley Banks fouled out with 1:10 left. Hawkins came up with a crucial steal that led to a pair of free throws from Fox, Jacob Daffron scored a three-pointer, then Fox fouled out with 6.7 left. The Sandites ended on a three-point run to end the festival on a high note.

Sand Springs went 2-1 at the Memorial tournament, failing to go undefeated for the first time since they began attending in 2015. However, their only loss came at the hands of a team that took 5A No. 1 Memorial into overtime, and they were without Richardson in that game as well.

The Sandites will return to action Tuesday with a conference road game against Muskogee (2-4). They previously defeated the Roughers 57-52 in the season opener.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites fall 71-50 to Southwest Christian Academy

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (5-1) suffered their first defeat Friday night at the Tulsa Memorial Veterans Arena Invitational. After their first 5-0 start since 2015, the winning streak came to a close with their first-ever loss at the tournament, which they have been attending since 2015.

Sand Springs lost 71-50 to Southwest Christian Academy (6-3) out of Little Rock, Arkansas. The Lions had an average height of more than six inches on the Sandites, and it showed in almost every statistical category. The Southwest roster boasted thirteen players from nine different countries, all above 6’0”, with multiple Division I recruits.

The Sandites were without leading-scorer, 6’4” junior Davon Richardson, and 6’6” sophomore Jaden Hurd got his first varsity start. Cale Savage led the Sandites in scoring for the third time in his career with twelve points. Marlo Fox had ten points as the only other Sandite in double-digits. Senior Kason Hughes came off the bench for a career-best seven points, all in the fourth quarter.

6’10” Western Kentucky-commit Nick Ongenda put the Sandites on notice with a dunk mere seconds into the game, then 6’09” Belarus-native Enoch Boarkye made a three-point play off a foul from Hurd for the 5-0 lead.

Cole Durkee hit a three-pointer to get Sand Springs on the board and Savage hit two from the stripe and one from deep for their only lead of the game. Jathen Mills tied it up and the Lions surged back out front with a ten-point streak before Savage drained another three. Savage and Fox scored four more from the stripe to tie it at 15-15 after one quarter.

Southwest opened the second period with a fourteen-point run and closed on a six-point streak for a staggering 40-24 halftime advantage, led by Ogenda with twelve. Cale Savage also had twelve for the Sandites, but while Southwest had eight players in the scorebook, Sand Springs only had four.

Things didn’t improve for Sand Springs in the third quarter and the Lions went on a 11-3 run to close out the period with a comfortable 56-35 lead. The fourth period was another 15-15 tie.

Sand Springs shot a season-low 33% in the field, but went 13-of-17 at the charity stripe. They were out-rebounded 36 to a season-low seventeen, but came up with ten steals and committed only thirteen fouls.

The Sandites will return to action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against the HFC (Hoops For Christ) Warriors (6-7) out of Oklahoma City. The Warriors are coming off a 87-56 loss to tournament host 5A No. 1 Memorial (6-2).

CPHS Basketball: Sandites win fifth-straight, Minney scores 23

Josh Minney set career records in multiple categories Thursday night at the Tulsa Memorial Veteran’s Arena, leading the Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School basketball team to their first 5-0 start since 2015. Sand Springs topped the Wichita Defenders (4-2) home school team 76-65 in the first round of the Memorial Invitational.

The Sandites trailed 17-16 after the first quarter, but nine players saw court time, and a return to the starters gave them a nine-point run to start the second quarter. Davon Richardson kicked things off, Minney scored twice, and Cale Savage hit the first Sand Springs three of the night en rout to a 25-17 advantage that they never gave up.

Joshua Martin and Jonah Wolters broke up the streak, but Cole Durkee, Minney, and Savage started a new one for their first double-digit lead at 33-22. They couldn’t tie it up, but the Defenders did manage to dig themselves out of the hole briefly with an eight-point run before sending Jaden Hurd to the line for two. James Rackley made his way onto the scoreboard, but Marlo Fox and Richardson ended the half 38-33.

Sand Springs opened the second half with a statement, scoring on a long pass from Savage and a Richardson dunk. Kip Ammons scored from outside the arc, then Minney hit a layup and Fox went on a seven-point run for their biggest lead thus far. It was back-and-forth from there till 53-41, then Wichita rattled off six in a row.

The Sandites started the fourth quarter up 60-50 after a free throw from Minney and a layup by Durkee, but Wichita continued to hold tough, forcing multiple turnovers. Hurd made a three-point play with an assist from Cason Savage, then Minney dunked on his own steal for another thirteen-point lead. Their biggest advantage was 76-61 but Amons scored four to end the game.

Minney nearly doubled his previous scoring record with 23 points, nine rebounds, and a career-best eight steals. Also in double digits for the Sandites were Durkee with thirteen, Richardson with fourteen, and Fox with ten.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 8:00 p.m. against S.W. Christian Academy (5-3). Class 5A No. 1 ranked Memorial needed overtime to get past the Lions in their Thursday game.

CPHS Basketball: Undefeated Sandites bury Bartlesville 64-42, Savage scores 20

Consistent with the season thus far, the Sandites handled their opponent, but it was far from easy. In the second-highest ranked conference in the state, nothing comes easy.

The No. 17 ranked Bartlesville boys’ basketball team (2-3, 0-2) hung tight with No. 8 Sand Springs (4-0, 3-0) until halfway through the third period before the home team finally pulled away. The game marked the Sandites’ first 4-0 start since 2015.

Cale Savage had a breakout night with eleven points in the first period alone, leading his team to an 18-15 advantage with three three-pointers. Meanwhile the two teams combined for only twelve points in the second quarter, which was a 4-0 shutout till the final minute. Jaylin Oliver and Josh Minney traded threes to close the half, and the Sandites secured a 27-18 lead against the No. 9 defense in 6A.

Bartlesville mounted a comeback attempt in the third quarter, going on a six-point streak to cut their deficit to 29-24, but the Sandites retaliated with a 16-2 run to make it 45-26. Tayo Dina knocked down four straight and Simpson scored on a steal for a 45-32 deficit to start the fourth.

The final stanza was the highest-scoring quarter for the Sandites, and they effectively put the Bruins out of commission early on. The visitors went foul crazy and thirteen of the Sandites’ nineteen points came from the charity stripe. The home team closed out the night on a six-point run for their biggest lead of the game.

Savage led the Sandites for the second time in his career and first time this season with a personal-best twenty points. He was a perfect six-for-six in the field and five-for-five from outside the arc. Minney scored a career-high twelve points, and Marlo Fox added eleven to put three Sandites in double digits. Davon Richardson was held to a season-low eight points but pulled in a team-high ten rebounds.

The Sandites will return to action Thursday at 8:00 p.m. against the Wichita Defenders (4-1) at the Tulsa Memorial Veterans Arena Invitational. On Friday they will play Southwest Christian Academy (5-2) at 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday they will play the HFC Warriors (5-5) at 1:30 p.m. Sand Springs has gone undefeated at the Memorial Tournament three years in a row.

Bartlesville will host Bixby (1-3, 0-2) Friday at 8:00 p.m.
