CPHS Wrestling: Sandites fall 42-26 to No. 6 Jenks, Junior High wins 47-21

The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Jenks High School Wrestling team (6-1) celebrated senior night with a 42-26 win over No. 10 Charles Page High School (10-6) Thursday night at Frank Herald Field House. The night was doubly special for the Trojans, as it was their last home dual under Head Coach Ray Weis, who is retiring after twenty years with the program. The Sandites junior high won their dual 47-21.

Shane Wolf (13-12) kicked off the dual at 106 pounds with an easy win against Braden Conn, taking an 8-0 lead before pinning the Trojan in 5:11. Freshman standout Mitchell Smith (14-4) followed the effort with a pin of Lucas Spicer in 1:08.

Jenks got on the board with a medical forfeit early into the 120 match. Caden Vaughn (9-4) only recently returned to the lineup with a shoulder injury, and had it aggravated in the match against Garrett Rawlins. 

Seth Jones (20-4, 64-33) continued the Sandite pin streak with a 3:48 fall against Matt Ruley, but Jenks soon retaliated. Carter Goodman (8-10) led 5-2 before getting stuck at the 5:30 mark by Jonathan Kelvington. 

Blake Jones (21-8, 47-22) gave up an 8-5 decision to State Qualifier Branden Elrod but battled back after a 6-0 deficit with two third-period takedowns. Preston Medlin (18-12, 31-34) earned those points back with a 6-1 decision against Connor Robbins.

The Sandites forfeited 152 to State Qualifier Thatcher Hall to tie the dual up at 21-21 and the Trojans took their first lead when two-time State Champion Drake Vannoy pinned Dakota Taylor (3-16, 3-23). 

Chris Kirby (26-8, 84-32) got the visitors back on track with a huge 4-3 decision over State Qualifier Killian McGrew in one of the most exciting matches of the year, but Garrett Weis responded with a 7-3 decision against Sango Whitehorn (8-20, 10-24) to make it 30-24 with three matches left. 

Ethan Felts clinched the dual for the Trojans by pinning Brooks Dudley (21-15, 31-23), and the Sandites were deducted a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct following the match.

Josh Fincannon (28-10, 67-44) won a 9-7 decision over Hayden Crawley for the final Sandite points, then John Roberts wrapped up the dual with a pin of Robbie Parrish (7-15, 9-30) at heavyweight.

Sand Springs Wrestling will return to action Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. when they host nationally ranked No. 24 Broken Arrow (12-2) in their final event of the regular season. Jenks will travel to No. 14 Bixby (1-5) on Tuesday. 

CPHS Basketball: Muskogee upsets Sandites, Richardson scores 22

The Frontier Valley showed Tuesday why it’s one of the toughest conferences in 6A when unranked Muskogee (7-8, 3-4) knocked off No. 7 Sand Springs (12-3, 4-3) in a low-scoring 56-54 affair at the Ed Dubie Field House. The upset snapped a four-game Rougher losing streak in the series dating back to 2017.

The conference has been plagued by circular losses this season. Top teams Jenks, Booker T. Washington, Sand Springs, and Broken Arrow all have losses to lesser-ranked teams, showing a lot of parity around the league.

Sand Springs started the season with ten-straight wins, but is 2-3 in their last five games. Meanwhile Muskogee is storming back at 4-1 in their last five after starting the year 3-7.

University of Central Oklahoma-commit Davon Richardson led all scorers with his fourth-straight double-double, scoring 22 points with 16 rebounds. Those added rebounds have come with a cost, however, as 6’6” center Jaeden Hurd injured his knee four games ago.

The Roughers were able to seriously limit another crucial playmaker in Marlo Fox, who scored eight points less than his season average. This marked the first time this season that only one Sandite scored in double digits.

The Sandites played good inside defense, allowing only four offensive rebounds and ten goals from two-point range with a season-best four blocks. But the Roughers were deadly from three-point range with the best percentage of any Sandite foe this season. Muskogee also won the turnover battle and committed only 8 fouls to the Sandites’ 17, resulting in 12 points from the charity stripe.

Jaraun Campbell hit a three to start the game, and the Sandites played from the hole for almost the entire night. Richardson briefly tied it up, but Joseph Campbell, Jaraun Campbell, and James Brown combined for a 10-3 lead and stayed out front despite buckets from Ethan Oakley, Cason Savage, Cale Askew, and Daren Hawkins.

The Sand Springs second string played much of the second quarter, but was unable to find the basket and it was Savage and Richardson combining for a meager seven points and a 27-18 halftime deficit after Muskogee scored eight in a row.

It looked like the home team was finally firing on all cylinders in the third quarter as they stormed back 22-12 to take their first and only lead with 10 seconds left in the period. Richardson scored ten points in the stanza and Josh Minney scored the go-ahead free throw.

The Roughers refused to let their hard work go unrewarded and buckled down in the fourth, scoring eight straight to reclaim the advantage. The Sandites gave up ten free throws in their attempts to slow down the clock and ultimately came up a bucket short, despite finishing strong with seven unanswered points.

The Sandites will return to action Friday at 8:00 p.m. with a conference road game at Bixby (6-8, 2-5). Muskogee will be hoping to ride their momentum into another major upset when they host No. 2 Jenks (14-1) Friday at 8:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites pummel Muskogee 86-64, Armstead scores 20

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (12-3, 5-2) easily handled unranked Muskogee (5-11, 0-7) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, winning the conference game 86-64 in their second-highest-scoring outing of the season.

Sophomore standout Journey Armstead was just one rebound shy of a triple double, with 20 points, 10 assists, and 9 rebounds. Three other Sandites also scored in the double digits. Madison Burris scored a career-high 17, Raegan Padilla scored a career-high 16, and Hailey Jackson tied her career-high of 15.

The Sandites took an easy 13-0 lead before the Roughers got on the board. Armstead scored the first bucket, followed by a three from Padilla and two-point baskets from Burris and Jade Shrum. Padilla scored a two as well and Armstead scored a pair of free throws before Sophia Regalado sent Dezeray Burton to the line for two.

Regalado made up for that foul by scoring a bucket of her own, then Darrian Jordan scored two from the line. Muskogee ended on a high note with a free throw then a two from Shamana Virgil to end the quarter 17-5.

Jordan and Virgil traded blows to start the second quarter, then Regalado added her second basket. D’Asia Brown entered the score book with two from the charity stripe, then Jackson and Armstead scored back-to-back to make it 25-9.

The dominant lead began to slip away as Muskogee went on a 13-2 run late in the quarter. Regalado broke up a seven-point streak, but Akira Eubanks hit back-to-back threes to end the half 33-28.

Armstead kicked off the second half with a three, but the Roughers continued to battle back. Eubanks hit her third three and Burton made a free throw to cut it to 40-38 with under 5:00 in the third.

The teams traded blows till 42-40, then Burris scored a two and a three back-to-back, Bayleigh Cheney made a putback, and Padilla scored three baskets and a free throw on a fourteen-point streak. Eubanks broke up the streak with back-to-back threes, but Armstead had the final say of the quarter at 58-46.

The home team deepened their lead in the final stanza behind a ten-point effort from Burris and seven points from both Armstead and Jackson.

Virgil led all scorers with 22 points, and she had two other teammates in the double digits. Eubanks scored 17 and had all five of her team’s three-pointers. Burton added 12.

Sand Springs Basketball will return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. with a conference road game against No. 11 Bixby (9-6, 3-3). Muskogee will host No. 20 Jenks (7-8, 2-5) Friday at 6:30 p.m.

The Junior Varsity girls dominated their game 61-21. They led 20-7 after a first quarter that saw five three-pointers, including three from Bayleigh Cheney. By halftime it was 31-12, and they entered the home stretch 46-16. Layne Kirkendoll exploded for eight points in the fourth quarter and led all scorers with 12 overall. Cheney scored 11 as the only other player in the doubles.
