CPHS Basketball: Girls make 15-point comeback win in Ponca, Burris/Armstead score 14

Madison Burris makes a pass during the Enid Holiday Classic. (Photo: Scott Emigh). Burris scored a team-high 14 points against Ponca City Saturday.

Trailing 41-26 early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Sandites had to score as many points in the final stanza as they had in the first three in order to beat No. 18 Ponca City (9-3) in a 52-51 thriller.

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (8-2) pulled off their biggest come-from-behind win of the season Saturday afternoon at Allen Robson Field House, ending the game on a seven-point run for a 52-51 non-conference win over the Wildcats.

Journey Armstead and Madison Burris scored 14 apiece in a balanced team effort. It was Armstead’s ninth time leading the team this season, and Burris’s second. Burris matched her previous season-best. Raegan Padilla returned to action after being out sick for the past three games. She didn’t start, but was first off the bench with 8 points, all in the second quarter.

Burris was first on the board, hitting a three on the first field goal attempt of the game. Then came an eight-point Wildcat run before Darrian Jordan scored on a pass from Padilla and Armstead took a steal coast to coast. The visitors struggled with fouls early on, committing six in the first period, and found themselves down 10-7 at the buzzer.

Hailey Jackson laid up to start the second period and Padilla sank a three to regain the lead. Baylee Fincher and Carlie Badley tied it up twice for the home team, but the visitors closed out on a 5-1 run, all from Padilla, for a 19-15 locker room advantage. The Wildcats out-fouled the Sandites 7-1 in the second quarter.

Jackson stole the opening possession of the second half and put up two. Baylee Fincher did the same for the Wildcats, Armstead put up two, then the home team went on a run for their first lead in over a quarter. Badley made an easy two, then Baylee Fincher drilled back-to-back threes and a free throw for a 26-23 advantage. Badley drew a foul from Burris for a three-point play, then Karis Branstetter hit a three before Armstead broke up the fifteen-point run with a free throw.

Badley kept the Wildcat momentum running with two twos, then Armstead and Ashlynn Fincher traded layups to end the third 38-26.

Ashlynn Fincher kicked off the fourth quarter with a three, but Burris stole the show, scoring three straight field goals, including two threes. Foul trouble soon caught up with the Sandites as they found themselves in the bonus with five minutes to play. Badley made a free throw and Branstetter swished a three to regain the double digit advantage. Burris hit another three, then Ashlynn Fincher scored two.

Bayleigh Cheney was the next Sandite to find the spotlight, hitting back-to-back threes. Sandite fouls kept the Wildcats out front, but Armstead made a three-point play with a minute left to make it 51-48. Jackson scored a putback to make it a one-point game with 28.4 remaining.

Armstead got a steal, but both she and Jackson missed layups and Jade Shrum had to foul Branstetter to keep the game alive. The Wildcat missed both of her shots and Armstead scored the go-ahead bucket with three seconds on the clock. Baylee Fincher missed the last second three and the Sandites escaped with their biggest comeback win of the year.

Baylee Fincher led all scorers with 16, followed by Branstetter with 13 and Badley with 12.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a Frontier Valley Conference home game against No. 16 Jenks (5-2). Ponca will host U.S. Grant (1-6) Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Undefeated Boys win 10th-straight at Ponca City, Minney/Fox score 20 each

Josh Minney guards a player at the Enid Holiday Classic. (Photo: Scott Emigh). Minney scored a team-high 20 points against Ponca City Saturday evening.

The undefeated Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team improved to 10-0 Saturday evening at Allen Robson Field House with a non-conference 58-54 shootout against Ponca City (4-7).

Junior Marlo Fox and senior Josh Minney led the Sandites with 20 points apiece. It was Fox’s eighth time leading the team this season, and his fourth 20-point game. It was Minney’s first time leading the team this year, and his season-best performance.

Minney kicked off the game with a contested layup, but the Wildcats were quick to respond. Justin Thompson scored one on a steal, put back another, then drilled a three for a 9-4 advantage before the Sandites found their rhythm. Jaeden Hurd, Cason Savage, Davon Richardson, and Minney went on an eight-point run for the lead before Ponca tied it up at 12-12 to end the quarter.

The Wildcats took an 18-14 lead against the Sandite second string before Fox rejoined the game and scored nine. Anthony Gazaway scored a free throw to break up to the run, but Minney and Hurd closed out the half at 28-21.

Fox made a three-point play to start the second half with their first double-digit lead, and the game soon devolved into a three-point shootout led by Gazaway with four. There were six threes and two traditional threes in the third quarter alone, then Issac Valencia and Steven Faulkner hit back to back threes to start the fourth quarter 48-41.

Yet another three from Faulkner made it 52-51 with 3:41 to play, then Justin Thompson took the Wildcats’ first lead of the half with a three at 1:38. Cason Savage quickly tied it up and Hurd made the go-ahead basket. Thompson fouled out to send Fox to the line with thirteen seconds, but Fox made both shots to put the game out of reach at 58-54.

Gazaway led all scorers with 22 points, followed by Faulkner and Thompson with 11 apiece.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. with a huge Frontier Valley Conference home game against No. 8 Jenks (6-1, 1-1). The Sandites are 2-0 in conference action, while Jenks’s only loss of the season is to top-ranked Booker T. Washington. Ponca City will host U.S. Grant (2-8) Friday the 17th at 7:30 p.m.
