CPHS Wrestling: Sandites place 31st at Kansas City Stampede

The Charles Page High School varsity wrestling team took a depleted roster to the 14th Annual Kansas City Stampede this past weekend and took 31st place out of 49 teams. Liberty, Missouri won the tournament, which featured three top-fifty teams from Intermatwrestle’s national rankings.

Seth Jones (13-4, 57-33) wrestled at 126. In pool play he pinned Daxton DeFrange (Edmond North) in 5:40, Trey Phan (Platte County) in 1:21, Colin Bybee (Newton) in 2:56, and Aydan Cook (Seckman) in 1:52, but fell 6-0 to Logan Ferrero (Whitfield). He lost his first match of the Gold bracket 4-3 to Reese Davis (Tuttle), then beat Dayne Dalrymple (Christian Brothers) 5-2 before falling 6-0 once again in a rematch with Ferrero. He won the ninth-place bracket with a pin of Cassius Vanderpool (Bonner Springs) in 1:43 and an 11-2 major decision against Ayden Dolt (Liberty). 

Chris Kirby (10-5, 68-29) flew through his early competition, pinning his first six opponents. He took down Gage Sporleder (Nixa) in 1:39, Daryn Langford (Kearney) in 0:26, Chandler Holman (Choctaw) in 5:23, Treyton Rusher (Derby) in 0:23, Ethan Ooten (Edmond North) in 0:24, and Amaury Alvarez (Baylor) in 1:14 before getting pinned by eventual tournament Champion Jared Simma (St. Thomas Aquinas). In consolation he was pinned in a rematch with Holman, then pinned by Trevor Christian (Lebanon) before winning a 17-14 decision over Mason Hedgecorth (Smithville) for 11th place.

Brendon Wiseley (10-4, 62-24) competed at 106 pounds, despite battling sickness. In his pool he took a 6-0 lead on Karey Anderson (Monett) before pinning him in 0:55, then earned a 6-2 decision against Kolby McClain (Smithville) before falling 7-4 to Alexander Rallo (Whitfield). He ended pool play with a 1:07 pin of Nate Dovel (Red Oak) and withdrew from the tournament before bracket competition began.

Blake Jones (11-4, 37-18) went 2-2 in pool play at 138 pounds. He pinned Shayden Trant (Ponca City) in 4:00 and won a 10-6 decision against Clayton Moison (Ozark), but lost 6-2 to Trey Crawford (Park Hill) and was pinned by Sawyer Mock (Newton). He came back strong in the Silver bracket, pinning Brayton Chesnut (Creston) in 0:46 and Steven Rodriguez (Randall) in 4:28, with a 10-7 decision against Josh Parks (Edmond North) and a 6-4 rematch with Moison for first place in Silver and 17th overall.

Josh Fincannon (11-5, 50-39), also battling sickness, went 2-2 in pool play at 220 pounds. He pinned Sean Collins (Ozark) in 0:32 and Isaiah Barrett (Garden City) in 0:37, but was pinned by JC Cabuyaban (Liberty) and by eventual tournament champion Cade Lautt (St. James). He pinned Garrett Mead (Goddard) in 1:43, beat Andy Weis (Creston) 9-3 and Mason Crim (Smithville) 13-3 to earn his way to the Silver finals, but was pinned by Xavier Diaz (Klein) for 2nd in Silver and 17th overall.

Brooks Dudley (8-8, 18-16) went 2-2 in pool play at 182 with a 5-4 decision over Dru Guinn (Monnett) and a pin of Matthew Kerutis (Christian Brothers) in 0:31, but was pinned by Dylan Carlton (Seckman) and by Branson Britten (Randall). In the Silver bracket he set a new school record for fastest pin at that weight class, taking down Ryan Sigler (El Reno) in 0:11 to shave a second off Zach Sims’s record. He was then pinned in 0:54 by Josue Chaidez (Randall) and defeated 3-1 by Jacob Loughary (Seckman), but pinned Gabe Harmon (Platte County) in 1:37 and Guinn in 0:43 for seventh place in Silver and 23rd overall.

Harley Newberry (3-6) competed at 113 and went 2-2 in pool play. He was pinned by Shelton Chastain (Mustang) and Easton Hilton (Liberty), but pinned Silas Atkins (Tuttle) in 2:50 and Charlie Zeller (Paola) in 5:23. In the Silver Bracket he was pinned in 5:54 by Andy Lipp (Staley) and majored 13-4 by Knowlyn Egan (Derby). He won a 10-5 decision against Andrew Dent (Lebanon) but was teched 15-0 by Clayton Knapp (El Reno) for 14th place in Silver and 29th overall. 

Sango Whitehorn (4-6, 6-10) wrestled at 195 pounds and took 13th place in Silver and 29th overall. He pinned Ben Bueneman (Holt) in 3:32 in pool play, but fell 11-1 to Piper Pennington (Coweta) and was pinned in three-straight maches by Ashton Sharp (Park Hill), Callum Trester (Liberty), and Braegan Patman (Ozark). He ended the tournament with a pair of wins, pinning Wyatt Holmes (Coweta) in 0:38 and beating Peyton Nevels (Nixa) 18-10.

Robbie Parrish (4-8, 6-23) picked up his first-ever non-forfeit victory in the heavyweight pool, pinning Garrett Childers (Lebanon) in 2:17. He was pinned by Marquonn Journey (Choctaw), Erik Hernandez (Garden City), Chaz Polifika (Perry), and Steven Bussell (Mustang) before getting another win. He pinned Ricky Samuel (Har Ber) in 4:57 before falling to Aidan Gonzalez (Tuttle) in the placement round for 14th place in Silver and 30th overall.

Preston Medlin (3-7, 16-29) won an 8-1 decision against Kamden Huneycutt (Goddard), but lost 7-6 to Schmuke Branch (Farmington), 8-2 to Koa Grace (Staley), 7-2 to Elijah Arl (Lebanon), and was pinned by eventual champion Garrett Bowers (Christian Brothers).

Colton Luker (0-5, 1-5) competed at 120 pounds. He was pinned by Hayden Ferrell (Holt), Jacob Frost (Holy Cross), Johnathon Erp (Red Oak), and Cole Moberly (Mill Valley) in pool action.

Dakota Taylor (0-6, 0-13) competed at 152 pounds and was pinned by Josh James (Garden City), Giovanni Casviasca (Har Ber), Anthony Chellew (Seckman), David Brooks (Staley), and Carson Gleghorn (Paola).

Sand Springs voided 132 and 170 pounds. Former Sandite State Champion Carter Young, who transferred to Stillwater after his freshman year, placed third at 132 with three falls, three technical falls, and a major decision.  

The Sandites will take the rest of the year off to nurse injuries before returning to action Tuesday, January 7th in a dual against Bixby, 7:00 p.m. at Clyde Boyd Middle School.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites routed 58-9 by No. 2 Mustang

The Class 6A No. 7 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (2-1) took on its toughest opponent of the season thus far Tuesday night, and were routed 58-9 by No. 2 Mustang (4-0) at the Ed Dubie Field House. The home team won only two matches, and gave up six pins in their worst loss since 2000.

Mustang is currently ranked No. 39 in the country by Intermatwrestle.com and features four defending State Champions.

The dual started at 160 pounds and Mustang won five consecutive pins and seven-straight matches for a 37-0 lead before Brendon Wiseley (7-3, 59-23) picked up a 4-0 decision against Shelton Chastain. The Broncos won their next two matches before Seth Jones (6-1, 50-30) pinned Weldon Bryan in 1:59 to make it 48-9. The visitors ended the night on a three-match run.

The Sandites have two more top-ranked duals on the horizon against 6A No. 1 Broken Arrow (2-0) and 5A No. 2 Collinsville (2-0), but first will travel to the Kansas City Stampede in their final event of 2019. Mustang will also compete at Kansas City.

CPHS Basketball: Girls win 4th-straight 60-45 against Owasso, Armstead scores 14

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (5-1, 1-1) won their fourth-straight game Tuesday night, 60-45 against Owasso (2-3, 1-1) behind a team effort that saw nine players in the score book.

Owasso got hot early for a 7-0 lead behind baskets from Karson Zumwalt and Mallory Hendrix, but the visitors came storming back for a 12-11 advantage, ending the quarter on a six-point run. Journey Armstead scored six in the period, with help from Madison Burris, Hailey Jackson, and Darrian Jordan. 

A three-pointer from Kelsey Korb gave Owasso the lead to start the second quarter, but after a brief tie at 16-16, the Sandites ran the game with a nine-point streak to close the half up 33-22. 

Owasso never got back within single digits, and the Sandites were able to run the bench after taking a 51-33 lead early in the fourth. Their biggest lead came at 60-42 before the Rams scored three to end the game.

Sixteen Sandites saw action, led by Armstead with 14 points and Burris with 13. Sophia Regalado scored a career-high 5, while Fayth Walker Alison Day each scored 2 for the first points of their varsity careers.

Zumwalt was the only Ram in double digits with 10 points, closely followed by Korb and Ellie Morrill with 9 each. Nine Rams also scored in the game.

Sand Springs will return to action Thursday, December 26th at 3:30 p.m. against U.S. Grant (1-2) in the first round of the Enid Holiday Classic. Owasso will travel to No. 8 Sapulpa (4-1) January 7th following winter break.

CPHS Basketball: Undefeated Sandites win 6th-straight at Owasso, Richardson scores 24

The Class 6A No. 20 ranked Owasso boys’ basketball team (0-2, 0-2) played close for three quarters against No. 7 Sand Springs, but never led and was ultimately left in the dust as Charles Page High School improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Frontier Valley Conference Tuesday night. The 59-46 win marked the Sandites’ first 6-0 start since 2015.

University of Central Oklahoma-committed senior Davon Richardson led all scorers iwith 24 points, closely followed by junior standout Marlo Fox with 18.

Fox hit a three to start the night, and the Rams were behind the eight-ball from the very beginning. Fox scored the first three baskets for the Sandites, including two threes. Hawkins put up five and Richardson added six for a 19-12 first quarter advantage. 

Owasso wouldn’t let the Sandites run away with things, and won the second period 12-11 thanks to a late three from Kyler Mann, who finished the night with 12 points. A layup from Hawkins gave the visitors their first double-digit lead with 1:45 remaining in the third quarter, but Caden Fry made a three-point play for the Rams to keep things close.

Richardson drained a buzzer-beater three to make it 43-33 going into the fourth quarter. Fry dunked on a steal to kick off the final stanza, but Sand Springs went on a 14-2 run with eight points from Richardson for their biggest lead of the night at 57-37.

Fry led the Rams with 14 points, followed by Trenton Ellison with 13. Mann led his team with 12 points prior to fouling out with 4:08 in the game.

Sand Springs will take a week off before returning to action Thursday, December 26th at 11:00 a.m. against the Green Country Defenders (5-3) in the first round of the Enid Holiday Classic. Owasso will play Westmoore (3-3) on the 26th at 1:30 p.m. in the Mustang Holiday Classic.
