CPHS Basketball: Sandites whip Wichita 64-48, Fox scores 17

Coming off a huge conference upset of Union, the Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (3-0) rode that momentum into a mostly easy win against the Wichita Defenders (3-3) Thursday night in the first round of the Memorial Veterans Arena Invitational.

Jaeden Hurd and Marlo Fox kicked off the night with a pair of twos, and the Sandites never trailed. Hurd, Fox, Cason Savage, and Josh Minney combined for an 11-point run and 15-2 advantage before the Defenders finally found some rhythm.

The two teams kept pace with each other from there, and Sand Springs only led 21-11 after the first quarter and 37-25 at the half. Davon Richardson picked up a technical foul late in the second, setting up David Brown for a pair of free throws to cut it to 34-25, but Daren Hawkins hit a three just seconds before the buzzer to reclaim the double-digit advantage.

Wichita won the third quarter 12-8 and only trailed by six early in the fourth quarter before Sand Springs hit the gas and scored ten-straight. The Sandites won the fourth 19-11 for a comfortable 16-point win.

Wichita’s Jonah Wolters led all scorers with 19 points, closely followed by Fox with 17. Minney and Hawkins both scored 12 for the Sandites, while Kip Ammons tallied 10 for the Defenders.

Sand Springs will play the Hoops For Christ (HFC) Warriors (6-4) Friday at 5:30 p.m., while Wichita will play 5A No. 10 Collinsville (2-1) at 7:00 p.m. The festival-style invitational is not bracketed, and no first-place trophy is awarded.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites beat Edison 57-40 at BK Tournament, Armstead scores 24

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School girls basketball team (2-1) overcame a rocky start against 5A No. 15 Edison Prep (1-2) Thursday morning in the first round of the Bishop Kelley Invitational, finishing strong with a 21-12 fourth quarter after leading by only 3 late in the third.

Their 57-40 win over Edison advances them to the semifinals against the winner of 4A No. 16 Ada (2-0) vs. 5A No. 18 Claremore (0-1) Friday at 4:00 p.m. The Lady Sandites are coming off a third-place performance in the tournament last season, but won three-straight titles from 2015-2017.

First-year head coach Joshua Berry switched up his starters from the first two games, and nine players saw action in the first half, but the team failed to find much traction outside of sophomore standout Journey Armstead.

Armstead scored seven of the Sandites’ first quarter points, and they trailed 11-9 going into the second period. Sophia Regalado and Madison Burris tallied free throws to briefly regain the advantage, but Destiny Smith hit a three to tie it at 14-14, and another for the 19-16 lead. Mikah Hampton and Darrian Jordan also hit layups in a nine-point run in the closing minutes, and the Sandites took a 25-21 lead into the locker room behind a 17-point performance from Armstead.

Sandite foul trouble helped the Eagles crawl back into contention with a six-point run in the third quarter to cut it to 31-28, but a three pointer and a steal and score from Armstead made it 36-28 at the buzzer.

A thirteen-point run spanning two periods put the Sandites up 44-28 before Taniya Tease broke it up. Mariah Smith added another Eagle score, but Sand Springs went on a nine-point run for a 21-point advantage and sent in the third string for the final minutes.

Armstead led all scorers for the third time this season, tallying 24 for the winning team. Mariah Smith led the Eagles with 11, and they were the only two to score double digits. Burris and Jackson were each only a basket away from double-doubles, with Burris snagging a career-high 13 rebounds and Jackson with 11. Fifteen Sandites saw action in the game.

Edison will play the loser of the Ada vs. Claremore match-up Friday at 10:00 a.m.

CPHS Basketball: Union snaps Sandites' 16-game conference win streak

A sixteen-game conference win streak came to an end Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House as the No. 3 ranked Union Redskins (6-0, 3-0) rolled to a convincing 39-25 victory over No. 12 Charles Page High School (1-1, 0-1), the defending Frontier Valley Champions.

Out-rebounded 14-2 in the first quarter, the undersized Sandites found themselves down 14-7. Journey Armstead scored the opening layup, Jayla Burgess tied it, and Darrian Jordan sank a three for the home team’s final lead of the night. Darian Carr gave Union its first advantage with a three, then ended the quarter with one as well. The Redskins blanked the Sandites 6-0 in a low-scoring second period, with a basket from TaKyla Pitts and two from Burgess to make it 20-7.

Armstead hit a pair of threes in the third period and Sophia Regalado also got on the board, but Union continued to roll and was 30-15 going into the home stretch. The fourth quarter was the only stanza the Sandites would win, with baskets from Armstead, Hailie Jackson, and Reagan Padilla.

Armstead was the only player from either team to hit double digits, scoring 16 points, while Pitts and Burgess had 8 apiece for the visitors. Carr and Burgess had 8 apiece for the Redskins.

The Lady Sandites will return to action Thursday at 10:00 a.m. against 5A No. 15 Edison Prep (1-1) in the first round of the Bishop Kelley Invitational. They have won the tournament three of the last four years, but settled for third place last season. Union will take a week off before hosting No. 6 Sapulpa (3-1, 1-0) next Tuesday.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites upset No. 6 Union 75-74, Marlo Fox scores 26

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (2-0, 1-0) pulled off a 75-74 upset of No. 6 Union (2-1, 2-1) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House behind a 26-point career-high performance from Marlo Fox. The Redskins beat their first two opponents by an average margin of 30 points before falling in Sand Springs.

Union took an early lead thanks to Sandite fouls, but the home team settled down and battled back to their first lead at 10-9 thanks to a pair of threes from Fox and a long two from Cason Savage. The teams traded punches till Union went on a six-point run to close the quarter 20-16.

A Josh Minney free throw set up Fox for the game-tying three early in the second. Union responded by taking their biggest lead yet at 30-22, but Fox hit yet another three, Daren Hawkins scored two from the charity stripe, and Minney added a layup to make it a one-score game. The Redskins held a narrow 35-34 lead going into the locker room.

Sand Springs pulled ahead in the third quarter behind a seven-point performance from Richardson and they held a 51-49 advantage going into the final stanza. They hit the gas in the home stretch, jumping out to a 68-60 lead before getting into foul trouble in the final minute.

With only seconds remaining AJ Reed hit a free throw to make it 75-73, but missed the second and Jaeden Hurd rebounded. It looked like the Sandites had the game on lock, but Hurd’s pass was picked off and Minney had to foul Da’Yan Aromaye to prevent a game-tying layup with less than a second remaining. Fortunately for the Sandites, Aromaye missed his first shot, making the second irrelevant.

Fox’s 26 points led all scorers, followed by Richardson with 21 and Minney with 15. Five Redskins posted double-digits, led by Reed and RJ Forney with 15 apiece. Nehemiah Boykins contributed 11 and Micah Lovett and Seth Chargois had 10 each.

Sand Springs will return to action Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Tulsa Memorial Veterans Arena Invitational against the Wichita Defenders (3-2). They will play Friday at 5:30 p.m. against the HFC Warriors (6-2) and Saturday at 11:00 a.m. against the Northwest Arkansas Hornets (1-4). Union will play 3A No. 7 Hugo (3-1) Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in the first round of the Durant Tournament.
