CPHS Soccer: Bartlesville sweeps season opener, Saldana scores 2

The Charles Page High School varsity soccer teams are still looking for their first wins of the season after Bartlesville won both the boys and girls’ season-opening matches last Tuesday at Memorial Stadium. The girls were shut out 2-0, but the boys led 3-1 in the second half before the Bruins (3-1) scored four goals in the final twenty minutes for the 5-4 non-district comeback.

The Bartlesville girls (4-0) were aggressive on offense, out-shooting Sand Springs 14 to 3, but junior goalie Ali Day made seven saves to keep her team in contention. Hannah Sparks had a goal called off on an off-sides call in the 11th minute, but Reagan Klose made up for it four minutes later and Zoe McCabe made it 2-0 in the 35th minute.

Sand Springs didn’t get off its first shot till the final minute of the first half, and they only made two shots in the second half. The Sandite defense made a strong second half effort, only allowing four shots and no goals, but offensively they couldn’t find an answer for the still undefeated Bruins.

The boys were conservative but accurate in the first half, only taking five shots, and scored on two of them. Senior Luke Jeffus made the first goal of the season in the 8th minute, but Gabriel Ontiveros tied it up with a putback a minute later. The Bruins took three shots in a row, with one bouncing off the goal post. Junior goalie Xander Quiroga blocked the second shot, but the third time was the charm for Ontiveros.

Jeffus almost had a brace on a free kick in the 11th minute, but it traveled just a hair to the right of the goal, and instead it was Fernando Saldana with the go-ahead goal with 1:24 left in the half.

The Sandites opened up in the second half, taking far more shots. Jack Bratcher made it 3-1 with an assist from Saldana, but Bartlesville came storming back. Jalen Belong scored in the 61st minute, Dylan McCoy tied it in the 74th minute, and Ontiveros scored the go-ahead goal with 4:16 left to play.

Saldana tied it up with a penalty kick at the 77:00 mark, but Belong had the final score of the night just a minute later. Saldana got a free kick in the final minute that was deflected and Cameron Summerton tried to score on a header but the shot traveled out of bounds and the Bruins ran out the clock.

Both teams took 17 shots in the match. The Bruin keeper came away with four saves and Quiroga had six.

Sand Springs Soccer will return to action Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. with a non-district Highway 97 Rivalry match-up. The Sapulpa boys are 1-1 and the girls are 2-0.

CPHS Track: Layne Kirkendall stars at Owasso Track Meet

Former Jenks standout Layne Kirkendall has been sidelined to JV action this year due to transfer eligibility, but that hasn’t stopped her from competing. In the basketball season she had to play against JV teams, but in the track and field season she gets to compete against varsity athletes. She can’t score team points or make the post-season, but she can place in regular season events. In Friday’s season debut at Owasso she finished top three in all three of her events.

Kirkendall won the girls’ long jump with a distance of 16’09.75”, was second in high jump with a height of 5’00.00”, and was third in 200 meter dash with a time of 27.44 seconds. She single-handedly outscored six varsity teams and the Lady Sandites would have placed sixth overall with her in their ranks.

Without Kirkendall, the girls placed 11th out of 14 teams thanks to fourth place finishes from the 4x800 relay team (11:17.15) and from Annaston Wiseley, who ran the 400-meter dash in 1:04.95.

The Sandite boys’ varsity placed 10th of 17 teams, and the junior varsity was 17th. Joseph Mattison was the top dog on the boys’ team, placing fourth in both of his events. He had a mark of 19’02.00” in long jump and a time of 11.9 seconds in the 100-meter dash.

The Sandites are in their first season under Head Coach Tim Dial, and he’s already taking strides to improve the program. This year they got an early start by competing at indoor track events at the Universities of Arkansas and Oklahoma before the season officially began. They also added pole vaulting to the program.

Edmond Memorial won the boys’ team title while Owasso won the girls’. Sand Springs will return to action Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Union High School.

CPHS Wrestling: Season rewind and final statistics

The 2019-2020 Sandite Wrestling season was a bit of a mixed bag as the team struggled in a lot of areas, but still continued several Sand Springs success streaks.

At 10-8 the team won their lowest percentage of duals (.556) since a 6-6 season in 2006, but they did extend their ten-win season streak to five straight years, and won their fourth-consecutive district title.

They failed to crown an individual tournament champion for the first time since 2006, and failed to win a team tournament title for the third-straight season, but continued a seven-year tradition of putting a Sandite in the State Finals, with Seth Jones placing second.

They had two State Placers, with Josh Fincannon finishing third. That was their lowest number since 2011, and they placed 10th at the tournament. A pessimist would point out that it’s their lowest placement since 2011, but an optimist would acknowledge that being a top-ten program in the State’s largest school classification is a feat that 22 other schools would love to claim.

When you’re only three years removed from State and Dual State titles, it’s easy to look at the glass half empty. But a top-ten finish is nothing to scoff at, especially considering the team lost a State Finalist mid-season and had two other teammates transfer to other schools and make the State Finals with their new programs. That’s a lot of firepower to lose and still finish as good as they did.

The Sandites will graduate an eight-man senior class this year. Chris Kirby, Hunter Hilger, Seth Jones, Josh Fincannon, Preston Medlin, Robbie Parrish, Brendon Wiseley, and Caleb Phillips went a combined 145-81 this season and 362-254 in their careers.

Fincannon had a great senior season, making the finals at three different tournaments, including Regionals and the prestigious Perry Tournament of Champions. He won ten straight matches over a four-week period this season.

Kirby was a three-time State Qualifier and placed fourth as a sophomore and junior. In his senior season he competed in arguably the toughest weight class in 6A. As a junior he won the Jerry Billings Invitational. He had the longest win streak on the team this year, winning fourteen straight matches, and was 16-1 in duals.

Jones was a three-time State Qualifier and two-time placer, finishing fourth as a junior. He wasn’t able to win the State title, but he did beat the State Champion earlier in the season. He also won ten straight matches this year.

Medlin only spent two years on varsity and was one of the most improved wrestlers on the team, going 21-16 after a 13-22 junior year. He won ten straight matches in January.

Wiseley quit the team mid-season, but left his mark on the program as a junior State Runner-Up and Regional Champion. He also won the Glenpool tournament last year.

The future remains bright for the program with a stacked group of underclassmen like freshman State Qualifier Mitchell Smith, sophomore State Qualifier Blake Jones, Brooks Dudley, Shane Wolf, Carter Goodman, and more. Junior State Qualifier Sango Whitehorn will lead next year’s seniors alongside Caden Vaughn, who had a solid season battling through injury.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites fall to Shawnee, bounce back 12-4 against Edison

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (2-2) hit a slight setback Friday night in a 9-1 home loss to Shawnee (3-0), but bounced back Saturday afternoon in Tulsa with a 12-4 rout of Edison Preparatory School (0-3). Both game were non-district.

The eight-run loss to Shawnee was actually the closest game anyone has played yet against the Wolves, who have yet to allow two runs in a game. Brycen Peterman scored the Sandites’ lone run in the bottom of the first on a ground out from Ethan Sartin.

Brock Swanson (0-1) got the start and the loss on the mound in his pitching debut, and tossed eight hits, three strikeouts, and three walks in 4.2 innings. Shawnee scored one run in the first and three in the second before Kaden Young made his pitching debut in relief. The Wolves added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth for the run-rule win. Young tossed three hits, two strikeouts, and one walk in 1.1 innings.

Offensively the Sandites had their worst batting performance of the short season thus far, with four hits for a .174 average. They received only two walks and left seven runners stranded.

Saturday was a far different story as they took an 8-0 lead early on and never trailed, going .391 at the plate with nine hits, fifteen walks, and their first error-free game of the year.

Cody Pulscher scored the first run on a passed ball in the bottom of the second, then Ty Pennington scored on a ground ball form Jacob Shields.

Four straight walks in the third gave Young a free run, then Shields hit a 2RBI single to score Swanson and Pennington to make it 5-0. Gabe Glenn and Peterman hit RBI singles to score Keaton Campbell and Shields, then Glenn tagged up to score on a fly out from Sartin.

The Eagles scored four runs on two walks and three singles in the fourth but that would be their only successful inning. They also loaded the bases in the fifth, but Kaegan Murray caught a fly out to save the inning, and Peterman pitched a strikeout to strand two in the sixth.

Pennington scored his third run of the game on a ground out from Hayden Blair in the fifth. Campbell doubled in the sixth and tagged up to score, then Blair doubled and came in on a double from Peterman. Peterman scored on a single from Murray to end the game by run-rule.

Keifer Massey (0-0, 1-0) got the start on the mound but only pitched two innings and it was Jasper Adams (1-0) who came in next and got the win. Massey threw two strikeouts, two walks, and no hits in his two innings. Adams threw six his, one strikeout, and four walks in the middle three, then Peterman closed out the final inning with a two-hit, two-strikeout performance.

Sandite baseball will return to action Monday at 6:00 p.m. with a district home game against Putnam City West (2-1, 2-0).
