CPHS Basketball: Boys survive Owasso 71-62, Fox scores 23

Josh Minney goes up for tip-off against Union. Minney scored 15 points in Tuesday’s win over Owasso.

The Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (15-4, 7-4) bounced back from Friday’s loss with a 71-62 win over No. 18 Owasso (9-11, 5-6) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House. The Sandites had four players score in double digits, led by junior Marlo Fox with 23.

The Sandites used lethal accuracy and put up a season-high ten three-point baskets to overcome a 22-18 rebounding deficit. Fox, Davon Richardson, and Cason Savage all had three threes apiece. Richardson put up 19 points, followed by Josh Minney with 15 and Savage with 11.

The first quarter was back and forth with six lead changes. The Sandites scored eight in a row for a 13-6 advantage with back-to-back threes from Richardson, but the Rams came storming back with eleven in a row, including back-to-back threes from Bryce Journee, and held a narrow 19-18 lead going into the second period. That would be their last lead of the game, but they played close throughout.

The Sandites opened the second period on an eleven-point run and took a 31-25 lead into the locker room. Aaron Porter and Caden Fry cut it to 31-30 early in the second half, but Sand Springs went on an 11-3 run and were 47-38 to start the fourth.

Minney hit a three for the home team’s first double-digit lead with 6:50 to play, and Savage made a layup for the biggest lead at 64-53. Richardson hit two free throws late in the game to make it 71-60, but Journee scored a putback to end the game.

Journee led the Rams with 18 points, followed by Porter and EJ Lewis with 15 apiece, and Fry with 12.

Sand Springs basketball will return to action Friday at 8:00 p.m. with a huge conference road game at No. 3 Jenks (17-2, 9-2), who won their previous meeting 57-54. The Rams will host Sapulpa (9-11, 4-7) Friday at 8:00 p.m. The Rams won the first meeting 62-38.

CPHS Basketball: Girls rout Owasso 64-44, Armstead scores 16

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (13-6, 6-5) rolled to a dominant 64-44 win against Owasso (4-16, 2-9) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House to snap a three-game losing streak and get back above .500 in Frontier Valley Conference play. They were led by sophomore standout Journey Armstead with 16 points, but nine players contributed and Leyshia Morris put up a career-high 11.

Owasso took its only lead of the game with a three-pointer from sophomore Chloe Stocksen, who led her team with 16, but the Sandites went on a run for an 11-3 advantage that the Rams never recovered from. By the end of the first quarter the Sandites led 14-5.

Stocksen scored her team’s first seven points and the Sandites led 25-7 before Karson Zumwalt entered the book. The second quarter was the most explosive for the Sandites, who took a 37-18 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter was equally lopsided and the home team took its biggest lead at 55-27 before the Rams began to battle back in the fourth against the Sand Springs third string.

The Sandites had one of their best shooting performances of the season and shot a season-high 36% from three-point range. Morris led the team in accuracy, going three-of-four on the long ball.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. with a conference road game at No. 19 Jenks (9-9, 4-6), who they previously defeated 56-46 at home and 54-41 at the Enid Tournament. Owasso will host No. 7 Sapulpa (17-3, 10-1), who routed the Rams 50-26 earlier this year.

CPHS Basketball: Boys fall 69-55 at Union, Fox scores 25

UCO-commit Davon Richardson posted his sixth double-double of the season with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

The Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (14-4, 6-4) played their fifth top-ten match-up of the season Friday night at the Union Multipurpose Athletic Center against No. 7 Union (14-5, 7-3) in a rematch of the Sandites’ December upset.

This time around the Sandites were minus two starters (Jaeden Hurd, ACL and Daren Hawkins, ACL) and the Redskins had home court advantage. Sand Springs had a season-low field goal percentage and lost starter Josh Minney to fouls early in the fourth, allowing the Redskins to run away with what what had been a very close game.

After leading only 44-40 going into the final stanza, Union finished 69-55 despite two exceptional Sandite performances. University of Central Oklahoma-committed senior Davon Richardson posted his sixth double-double of the season with 20 points and 13 rebounds, and junior standout Marlo Fox scored 25 to lead all scorers on his birthday.

The Redskins had the deeper bench, however, with eight scorers while Sand Springs only had five. Seth Chargois paced his team with 18 points, followed by Nehemiah Boykins and Micah Lovett with 12 apiece.

The teams went blow for blow through the first half, with Union holding narrow leads of 12-10 after the first and 25-23 at the half.

Fox made the opening bucket of the second half, but the Redskins got hot and scored twelve in a row, with six from Chargois, for their biggest lead yet at 37-25. Then it was the Fox show, as the Sandite scored eight in a 10-2 run to even it up. Union went on a five-point run late in the quarter, but Richardson broke it up and Fox added a three to enter the home stretch 44-40.

Richardson put up nine in the fourth, but with Minney out of the game and an unproductive second string, the Sandites were unable to keep up with the Union depth.

Sand Springs basketball will return to action Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. with a conference home game against No. 19 Owasso (8-10, 4-5), who they previously defeating 59-46 in December. The Redskins will kick off a three-game road stretch against Sapulpa (8-10, 3-6) Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. They previously beat the Chieftains 92-50 in December.
