CPHS Baseball: Sandites top Davidson Academy 2-0, Cassity strikes out nine

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (5-1) kicked off the 27th Annual Tate Aggie Classic with a 2-0 victory against Davidson Academy (0-3) Monday afternoon in Cantonment, Florida. Sophomore pitcher Sebastian Cassity (1-1) got the win on the mound, throwing nine strikeouts with no walks and only two hits.

Cassity got off to a quick start, striking out two in the first inning, but Jared Yetetoe retired three for the Bears. The second inning was no better for the Tennessee team, and the Sandites got on the board with an RBI double form Jacob Snodgrass to bring in Cale Savage.

Gabe Dillard hit a double in the fifth but was stranded after Cassity’s third strikeout of the inning. Pinch-hitter Kaegan Murray singled in the sixth and Malachi Burks scored on a hit from Cal Watkins for the second and final run of the game.

The Sandites will take on Nolensville, Tennessee (3-3) Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in Fort Walton Beach and Navarre, Florida (2-4) Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The team is spending Spring Break in Pensacola.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites edge Edmond Memorial 6-4

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team improved to 4-1 Friday afternoon with a 6-4 non-district victory over Edmond Memorial (4-4) at the Owasso Festival. The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead, but the Sandites piled on five runs in the fifth for the come-from-behind win.

Hunter Lenochan got off to a rough start on the mound, walking three in the first inning. He adjusted quickly, however, and saved the inning with a pair of strikeouts. Coit Morton singled in Trace Evans in the bottom of the inning for Edmond’s only lead of the day.

Much of the game was uneventful offensively, but the Sandites showed off on defense. Seth Villines made a throw to Cale Savage at first for a double play, and Ben Banker struck out the side in order in the third inning.

The Sandite bats came alive in the fifth and they loaded the bases with a walk and a pair of singles from Tyler Ash and Malachi Burks. Cal Watkins drove in two on a double, Savage and Ethan Sartin hit RBI singles, and Watkins stole home to end the inning 5-1.

The Bulldogs tried to battle back in the bottom of the sixth. Morton doubled in Evans and scored on an error to make it 5-3, but a 4-6-3 double play brought the inning to a close.

Watkins hit another double in the seventh and Burks scored on a single from Savage. Weston Hicks doubled for the Dogs and scored on a fielder’s choice, but Burks caught a line drive to left field to strand a runner and end the game.

Banker (2-0) picked up his second win of the season, throwing nine hits and six strikeouts with no walks.

The Sandites will depart for Florida this weekend to compete in the 27th Annual Tate Aggie Classic in the greater Pensacola area over Spring Break.

CPHS Track: Sandites place third at Claremore with two champions

The Charles Page High School track and field teams traveled to Claremore Thursday and the boys earned their first third-place mark of the season with two champions in a field of sixteen teams.

The boys only have three top-three finishes in the past four years, and this was their first in a meet of ten or more teams. The boys placed eleven in the top-six. The girls had four top-six finishers and placed twelfth out of fifteen teams.

Aden Baughman won the 800-meter run in 2:00.61 and came in runner-up in the 1600. Joel Mackey won the 200 in 23.53 seconds, and placed fourth in the 100. Mitchell Mefford came in second in both discus and shot put. He threw 143’03” in discus and a career-best 40’11” in shot put.

Nelson Yazzie placed fourth in the 1600 and fifth in the 3200 with a personal-best 10:59.07. Alex Newport placed fifth in the 110 hurdles and the 4x200 relay team placed fifth as well.

Mackenzie Rader placed third in the 100 hurdles, third in the high jump with a PR 4’08”, and fourth in the long jump. Erika Baker took fifth in the 3200.

Personal records were hard to come by as the athletes had to contend with substantial winds gusting well over 20 MPH.

The Sandites will return to action at the Owasso Ram Relays on March 29th.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites come from behind for 3-2 win over Bartlesville

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (3-1) got back in the win column Thursday afternoon with a 3-2 non-district home field victory over Bartlesville (1-7).

Jaxon Skaggs (1-0) notched his first win on the mound, throwing three hits, four strikeouts, and two walks in six innings. Michael Miller picked up his first career save, pitching one hit and no walks in the seventh inning.

Sand Springs threatened early, loading the bases with a single from Malachi Burks and a pair of walks to load the bases in the first inning. All three were stranded, however, and instead it was the Bruins who took the lead. Braeden Winters drew a walk in the second inning and scored on a ground out by Silas Earley.

Bartlesville held their lead till the bottom of the sixth when the Sandites scored all three of their runs. Burks and Cal Watkins singled and advanced on a balk, setting up Burks for the game-tying run on a ground-out by Cale Savage. Watkins scored on a single from Kiefer Massey for the lead, and Massey came in on an error to make it 3-1.

Watkins committed an error in the seventh, Skaggs walked one, and Miller took over on the mound. Miller gave up an RBI single to Bradee Rigdon and Winters scored the final run of the game. With two runners on base and two outs, Bryce Peterman caught a fly ball at third base to secure the win.

The Sandites will return to action Friday at 1:00 p.m. against Edmond Memorial (4-3).

CPHS Soccer: Undefeated Sandites survive shootout with Enid for eighth-straight win

The Charles Page High School boys’ soccer team (7-0) came from behind once in regulation and once in an overtime shootout to defeat the Enid Plainsmen (2-2). They are riding an eight-match win streak dating back to the last game of the 2018 season.

Jhon Nieto gave his team the lead in the 16th minute of regulation and the Plainsmen held it for the majority of the game.

Finally, in the 68th minute, Luke Jeffus was fouled in the box and Gustavo Saldana netted the penalty kick to tie it up. As a non-district match, the teams skipped the overtime period and went straight to a best-of-five shootout to decide the winner.

Plainsmen goalie Angel Neri blocked a PK from Jeffus, and Ivan Delgadillo gave the visitors the lead. Alex Ramirez and Brayan Rodriguez also made PKs for the Plainsmen. Gustavo Saldana tied it at 1-1 and Fernando Saldana tied it at 2-2, but Jack Bratcher missed his kick and the Sandites trailed 3-2. A goal by Andrew Mora would have won the game for Enid.

Mora’s kick was on target, but Sandite keeper Ethan Tippit made the save and David Fancher tied it. The Plainsmen had one more shot to win it, but Tippit blocked Marcos Arambula to extend the shootout. After the first five kicks each team is only awarded one more apiece until someone takes the lead. Kaiden Cox gave the Sandites their first lead of the game, and Tippit blocked Fernando Marrufo to secure the win.

The Lady Sandite Varsity (5-2) lost their second match and first shutout of the season 2-0 to the Enid Pacers (2-2) and both Junior Varsity games ended in ties. The JV Girls are 2-1-3 after a scoreless 0-0 draw. The JV Boys tied 1-1 with the Plainsmen and are 1-0-2 on the year.

Sand Springs soccer will take a nearly two-week hiatus over Spring Break before kicking off district action Tuesday the 26th against their rivals from Sapulpa. The Lady Chieftains are 4-1 and the boys are 1-4.

CPHS Baseball: Scott Watkins named to Oklahoma State 1990s All-Decade team

Scott Watkins is recognized alongside fellow All-State Sandites before a 2017 baseball game.

Charles Page High School graduate and varsity Assistant Coach Scott Watkins was named to the Oklahoma State All-Decade team for the 1990s on Wednesday.

The Pokes are playing their final season at the historic Allie P. Reynolds Stadium, which has been their home since 1981. They will move into the new $60 million O’Brate Stadium next season.

To commemorate the final season of the old facility, the Cowboys released a roster of 25 athletes per decade that will be honored in a set of promotional trading cards.

Watkins is one of eight pitchers in the All-Decade bullpen, and is one of only six native Oklahomans to make the cut. During his time at OSU he amassed a career record of 17-4 with five saves and 134 strikeouts in 151.1 innings. The Pokes went 49-16 overall during the 1992 season, winning the Big Eight Conference and placing second at the Midwest Regional.

He was drafted in the 23rd round by the Minnesota Twins in 1992 and had a ten-year career in the minor leagues with one season in the majors. He went 0-0 in the MLB, pitching eleven strikeouts in 21.2 innings for a 5.4 ERA. He finished his career with a 30-27 record, going 20-19 in AAA, 4-1 in AA, and 4-5 in A.
