CPHS Basketball: Boys win Regional Championship, Richardson scores 18

The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School boys basketball team (17-7) defeated No. 11 Southmoore (17-8) 60-51 in a physical back and forth affair Saturday night at the Ed Dubie Field House. Davon Richardson led the way for the Sandites finishing with a double-double, scoring eighteen points and grabbing fourteen rebounds, including nine offensive boards.

The first quarter was a stalemate with both teams trading baskets throughout. Junior Sabercat guard Jordan Thompson kicked off the scoring by hitting a three on the game’s first possession, part of his seven point first quarter en route to a team high thirteen points. Sandites Josh Minney, Cole Durkee, and Cale Savage all hit threes of their own leading to a 12-12 tie after one quarter.

The second frame saw Sand Springs build a lead they would never relinquish, holding the visitors scoreless for the first 6:32 of the quarter, with Savage and Richardson each accounting for four points in the period including a buzzer beating triple from Richardson.

Southmoore trimmed the Sandite lead to eight heading into the final quarter, but Richardson took the game over scoring the first nine Sand Springs points of the period. The Sabercats managed to come as close as three points in the last stanza after back to back threes from Domingo Ward, but quality free throw shooting from Cason Savage and the rest of the Sandites kept Southmoore at bay and Richardson capped off the victory with a one-handed put-back dunk in the waning seconds.

Both Sand Springs and Southmoore will advance to the Area playoffs. Sand Springs will only need to win one game in Area to advance to State, and can afford to lose once, while Southmoore will need to win twice and will be eliminated with a loss.
