CPHS Boys Basketball: Mid-Season Review with Stats

The Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (11-2, 5-0) is on a roll this season. The Sandites started the year 5-0 for the first time since 2015, and even more impressively, they started conference action 5-0 for the first time in decades. This week they were voted the No. 6 team in Class 6A, also their highest spot in the poll in decades.

The Sandites started the season 5-0 before falling 71-50 to Southwest Christian Academy in the second round of the Memorial Invitational. The elite team was recruited from eleven different countries and their players averaged six inches on the Sandites. To make matters worse, leading scorer Davon Richardson was out with injury.

Sand Springs won four more games in a row, including a 78-36 beatdown of Altus and an 83-69 upset of 5A No. 4 Northwest Classen. Their second loss of the season came at the hands of undefeated 4A No. 2 Heritage Hall in the Duncan Invitational finals. While the defending State Champions are still running a 27-straight winning streak, the Sandites were without a crucial cog in Josh Minney.

2019 could not have started better for the Sandites, who defeated Bixby 84-43 and Ponca City 84-44. Their forty-point win streak will likely come to an end on Tuesday, when they’ll need all hands on deck just to keep the win streak alive at all.

The Sandites will take on No. 4 Sapulpa (7-1, 3-0) on the road at 8:00 p.m. Not only are the Chieftains their biggest rivals, but they are also the only remaining team undefeated in conference play.

Richardson, an uncommitted junior, leads the team in several categories this season, including: scoring (15.6), defensive rebounds (6.0), total rebounds (8.3), assists (2.3), steals (1.6), and blocks (1.1). He has notched one double-double and six team highs, with a season-best 26-point performance against Northwest Classen. He scored a career-best 44 against Owasso last season.

Cale Savage has the resume to be a collegiate basketball player, but he has signed on to play baseball for Northern Oklahoma College next season. The coach’s son averages 13.9 points per game and leads the team in three-point percentage (47.3%) and free throw percentage (81.4%). He has led the team on five occasions this year and scored a career-high 35 against the Hoops For Christ Warriors.

Cole Durkee will be another tough cog to replace as the senior averages 9.5 points and 4.2 rebounds, and recorded a double-double against Ponca. Fortunately Sand Springs will continue to be able to rely on junior standout Josh Minney’s 9.6 pounds and 4.5 rebounds. Minney has registered double-digit rebounds in three games, including his first double-double last week against Bixby.

The sophomore class has demonstrated a bright future for the Sandites, led by Marlo Fox with 10.7 points per game. Jaden Hurd is already a staggering 6’6” and averages 5.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, including a double-double against Altus.

CPHS Girls Basketball: Mid-Season Review with Stats

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (8-2, 5-0) has had ups and downs this season, but kicked off the new year with a pair of solid wins, reminding everyone that they are an indisputable State contender.

The Lady Sandites entered the season ranked first in Class 6A with four returning starters and a new Head Coach in Tobey Nightingale. Nightingale brought only a year of head coaching experience into Sand Springs, but brought an uptempo offensive and full court press that has paid dividends for the Sandites.

The top ranking jinxed the ladies, who suffered a 74-62 upset by No. 17 Ponca City in the season opener. They bounced back hard with their biggest win in years, 109-39 against Muskogee. They dominated Broken Arrow 89-56 and Memorial 75-34 before suffering a 57-43 loss to No. 3 Shawnee in the second round of the Bishop Kelley Invitational. The rough performance continued into their next game when they needed overtime to beat No. 20 Jenks.

A high point for the team was a 66-48 win over No. 11 Bartlesville, snapping a seventeen-straight conference win streak by the defending Frontier Valley Champions. In the next game, however, they only managed a 55-39 win over Muskogee and only led 35-30 to start the fourth quarter.

The Sandites are only two games into the new year, but thus far they have executed excellently in both. Against No. 18 Bixby they held a double-digit lead at the half and were 44-19 before sending in the backups. They finished that game with their highest field goal percentage of the season at 58% and highest free throw percentage at 88%.

In the payback win over Ponca City they showed their ability to overcome adversity by surging back from a double-digit deficit for a seventeen-point win.

The team boasts one of the best starting lineups in school history with four seniors, each of whom is committed to continue their athletic careers at the college level.

Holly Kersgieter, a University of Kansas commit, leads all starters with a 36% three-point percentage and 77% free throw percentage, 3.6 offensive rebounds, 5.3 defensive rebounds, and an incredible 22.6 points per game. She has recorded three double-doubles, led her team on eight occasions, and posted a career-high 38 points against Jenks.

Destiny Johnson is a University of Tulsa commit and the team’s number-two scorer with 13.9 points per outing. She leads the team in assists (1.5), and steals (3.5) with one double-double, three team-highs, and a season-best performance of 22 points against Broken Arrow. Her career-high of 31 points came in the 2017 season opener against Ponca.

Isabella Regalado will be taking her talents to Northeastern State University next season. She leads the team in blocks (0.7) and averages 9.2 points per game. She scored a season-high eighteen against Broken Arrow and a career-high 23 points last season against Jenks.

Jacie Taber has the highest field goal percentage among the starting unit at 65% and is 67% in two-point range. She recorded her career high of fifteen points against Bartlesville, just two games after a career-high twelve point, twelve-rebound performance against Shawnee. Primarily a pitcher, Taber will be playing softball for Missouri State University next season.

Madison Burris (3.4 ppg) is the only regular starter who will be returning next season.

The Lady Sandites will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on the road against No. 19 Sapulpa (5-3, 2-1).

CPHS Wrestling: Scott Patton wins Cushing Tournament, Sandites place 7th

Sand Springs sent a depleted roster to a loaded tournament this weekend, but still managed a seventh place finish out of 29 teams at the Cushing Tiger Invitational. Scott Patton won his first high school tournament title, Chris Kirby came in runner-up, and Kaden Glass won the consolation bracket.

The storied program from 3A No. 1 Perry put five in the finals and won their second team title of the season with 209 points despite not crowning any champions. 5A No. 1 Collinsville placed second with three finalists, two champions, and 170 points.

Patton (12-1, 47-23) dominated the first three rounds of competition at 152 pounds and outscored his foes 49-15. He scored a 19-3 technical fall against Blanchard State Qualifier Dillon Berry, pinned Trey Hudgens in 4:40, and majored Wagoner State Qualifier Kane Bowman 15-4.

In the finals Patton won a 9-7 shootout with defending Perry State Champion Hadyn Redus. Redus scored a takedown midway through the first period, but Patton reversed for back points to take a 4-2 lead into the second and never trailed. He led by as much as 9-4 before Redus scored a last second takedown, but the Sandite held on for the two-point decision.

Kirby (13-6, 35-16) drew a first round bye at 160 pounds. He pinned Keedin Crockett in 3:30 and Brody Harbour in 2:23, but fell 21-6 to two-time Missouri State Champion Andrew Gamble in the finals.

Freshman standout Kaden Glass (11-5) placed third at 195 with four first-period falls. He pinned Daxx Arnold in 0:26 and Karson Austin in 1:03 before falling 4-2 to Cushing State Qualifier Eriq Simpson. In consolation he set the Sand Springs 195-pound pin record, defeating Zack Bosse in only thirteen seconds, then felled Robert Woltkamp in 0:56 in the finals.

Josh Fincannon (11-9, 25-26) placed fourth at 220 pounds. He pinned Shawn Graham in 1:31 and defeated Missouri State Qualifier Keegan Bradley 7-2 before falling 6-0 to Salina State Qualifier Bobby Goins. In consolation he defeated Grove State Qualifier Dawson Tanner 5-1 but fell 5-0 to Perry State Qualifier Brandon Speikers.

Freshman Christian Forbes (10-5) placed sixth at 106 pounds with three wins and three losses, all decisions. He defeated Antonio Rizzi 9-6, Aiden O’Dell 11-4, and Braven Bowman 6-3. In the placement round he fell 1-0 to Stilwell’s Cutter Sheets, giving up a second period escape.

The 6A No. 5 Charles Page High School team voided 120, 170, and 285 and was without starters Brendon Wiseley (10-7, 24-15), Riley Weir (7-4, 98-31), Seth Jones (7-4, 29-18), and Dayvon Taylor (6-2, 29-22). They finished with 109.5 points in their first ever trip to the tournament.

Blake Jones (9-7) went 2-2 at 132 but failed to place. His only losses were to Perry State Champion Dylan Avery and Miami State Qualifier Cooper Stone. In the first round he scored a 4-1 decision over Cleveland State Qualifier Dylan Brown and in consolation he defeated Dathan Leach 9-4.

Brooks Dudley (3-2) also failed to place despite picking up two wins at 195. He pinned Cameron Haling in 2:00 and scored a 7-3 decision over Grant Baber.

Ethan Norton (0-2) and Chase White (0-2) made their varsity debuts at 113 and 138, respectively.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday on the road at 7:00 p.m. in Sapulpa (0-4). The Sandites have won their last three dual meetings with their Highway 97 rivals.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites avenge season-opening loss 65-48 against Ponca City, Kersgieter scores 21

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School girls basketball team (8-2) earned a quality payback win Saturday afternoon at the Ed Dubie Field House, avenging their season-opening loss to No. 11 Ponca City (4-3). The Wildcats looked to be on their way to another upset after the first quarter, but Sand Springs closed the half on a nineteen-point run and never looked back.

Ponca jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Jacie Taber made a three point play on a layup. Seven more points for the Wildcats and the home team trailed by double digits before Madison Burris sank a three and Destiny Johnson scored on a steal. Holly Kersgeiter closed the first quarter with a layup, trailing 18-11.

A three-pointer from Ashlynn Fincher gave the Wildcats a ten-point lead to start the second period, but Isabella Regalado kicked off a 22-point streak for the Sandites in their best defensive quarter of the season. Kersgeiter scored ten point in a row during the onslaught and the Sandites led 30-21 at the half.

Regalado kicked off the third quarter with a three-pointer, Madison Birnbaum put back a pair of field goals for Ponca, then Darrian Jordan scored back to back followed by a Taber three-point play to make it 42-25. Sand Springs took a loss midway through the period when Johnson went down with an ankle injury, but she returned to the court four minutes later.

Ponca rode an eight-point streak across two quarters to cut their deficit to 42-33 early in the fourth, but Sand Springs rattled off nine to answer before Taylor Wetzel broke it up with a layup to kick off a six-point streak. Leading 51-39, Kersgieter got triple-manned at half court and sent a desperate long pass to a wide open Taber for two. Taber fouled out shortly after that with 2:59 left to play, but the game was too far gone for Ponca by that point.

Kersgieter led all scorers with 21 points, followed by Taber with thirteen, Regalado with eleven, and Johnson with ten. Kersgieter, a University of Kansas-commit, also led the Sandites in three other categories with nine rebounds, five steals, and five assists.

Sand Springs will look to extend their five-game winning streak Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when they travel to No. 19 Sapulpa (5-3, 2-1) for a Highway 97 Rivalry matchup. The Sandites are undefeated at 5-0 in conference action.
