CPHS Basketball: Sandites fall 71-50 to Southwest Christian Academy

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (5-1) suffered their first defeat Friday night at the Tulsa Memorial Veterans Arena Invitational. After their first 5-0 start since 2015, the winning streak came to a close with their first-ever loss at the tournament, which they have been attending since 2015.

Sand Springs lost 71-50 to Southwest Christian Academy (6-3) out of Little Rock, Arkansas. The Lions had an average height of more than six inches on the Sandites, and it showed in almost every statistical category. The Southwest roster boasted thirteen players from nine different countries, all above 6’0”, with multiple Division I recruits.

The Sandites were without leading-scorer, 6’4” junior Davon Richardson, and 6’6” sophomore Jaden Hurd got his first varsity start. Cale Savage led the Sandites in scoring for the third time in his career with twelve points. Marlo Fox had ten points as the only other Sandite in double-digits. Senior Kason Hughes came off the bench for a career-best seven points, all in the fourth quarter.

6’10” Western Kentucky-commit Nick Ongenda put the Sandites on notice with a dunk mere seconds into the game, then 6’09” Belarus-native Enoch Boarkye made a three-point play off a foul from Hurd for the 5-0 lead.

Cole Durkee hit a three-pointer to get Sand Springs on the board and Savage hit two from the stripe and one from deep for their only lead of the game. Jathen Mills tied it up and the Lions surged back out front with a ten-point streak before Savage drained another three. Savage and Fox scored four more from the stripe to tie it at 15-15 after one quarter.

Southwest opened the second period with a fourteen-point run and closed on a six-point streak for a staggering 40-24 halftime advantage, led by Ogenda with twelve. Cale Savage also had twelve for the Sandites, but while Southwest had eight players in the scorebook, Sand Springs only had four.

Things didn’t improve for Sand Springs in the third quarter and the Lions went on a 11-3 run to close out the period with a comfortable 56-35 lead. The fourth period was another 15-15 tie.

Sand Springs shot a season-low 33% in the field, but went 13-of-17 at the charity stripe. They were out-rebounded 36 to a season-low seventeen, but came up with ten steals and committed only thirteen fouls.

The Sandites will return to action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against the HFC (Hoops For Christ) Warriors (6-7) out of Oklahoma City. The Warriors are coming off a 87-56 loss to tournament host 5A No. 1 Memorial (6-2).

CPHS Basketball: Sandites win fifth-straight, Minney scores 23

Josh Minney set career records in multiple categories Thursday night at the Tulsa Memorial Veteran’s Arena, leading the Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School basketball team to their first 5-0 start since 2015. Sand Springs topped the Wichita Defenders (4-2) home school team 76-65 in the first round of the Memorial Invitational.

The Sandites trailed 17-16 after the first quarter, but nine players saw court time, and a return to the starters gave them a nine-point run to start the second quarter. Davon Richardson kicked things off, Minney scored twice, and Cale Savage hit the first Sand Springs three of the night en rout to a 25-17 advantage that they never gave up.

Joshua Martin and Jonah Wolters broke up the streak, but Cole Durkee, Minney, and Savage started a new one for their first double-digit lead at 33-22. They couldn’t tie it up, but the Defenders did manage to dig themselves out of the hole briefly with an eight-point run before sending Jaden Hurd to the line for two. James Rackley made his way onto the scoreboard, but Marlo Fox and Richardson ended the half 38-33.

Sand Springs opened the second half with a statement, scoring on a long pass from Savage and a Richardson dunk. Kip Ammons scored from outside the arc, then Minney hit a layup and Fox went on a seven-point run for their biggest lead thus far. It was back-and-forth from there till 53-41, then Wichita rattled off six in a row.

The Sandites started the fourth quarter up 60-50 after a free throw from Minney and a layup by Durkee, but Wichita continued to hold tough, forcing multiple turnovers. Hurd made a three-point play with an assist from Cason Savage, then Minney dunked on his own steal for another thirteen-point lead. Their biggest advantage was 76-61 but Amons scored four to end the game.

Minney nearly doubled his previous scoring record with 23 points, nine rebounds, and a career-best eight steals. Also in double digits for the Sandites were Durkee with thirteen, Richardson with fourteen, and Fox with ten.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 8:00 p.m. against S.W. Christian Academy (5-3). Class 5A No. 1 ranked Memorial needed overtime to get past the Lions in their Thursday game.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites hammer No. 6 Ponca City 47-25

After losing their Head Coach, a handful of seniors, and one State Champion, the Charles Page High School wrestling team was supposed to be in a rebuilding year. Instead, for the second dual in a row, they beat their opponent by a wider margin than the year before.

Fresh off a fourth-place finish at the Perry Tournament of Champions (also a better finish than the prior year), the No. 5 ranked Sandites (2-0) breezed past No. 6 Ponca City (2-1) Thursday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House with eight match wins and a forfeit, losing only five bouts for a final score of 47-25.

Sand Springs recorded six pins against the perennial Ponca powerhouse, but the Wildcats had three and didn’t drop out of contention till they forfeited at 195. First-year Head Coach Jarrod Patterson remains undefeated alongside his Sandites.

Freshman Christian Forbes (6-2) scored two takedowns in each of the three periods against Joel Crossland and added a reversal in the third for a 14-5 major decision.

Brendan Wiseley (5-2, 19-10) scored takedowns in the first and third periods against Martez Cranes, added a reversal in the second, and nearfall points in the third for an 8-2 decision.

Dylan Luker (0-1) took down State Qualifier Shayden Trant immediately with some help from a Charlie Horse, but after a quick stretching session the Wildcat was ready to battle, reversing for multiple sets of back points for a 10-2 lead. Luker got a reversal, Trant had another cramp, and the Wildcat started the second period on top before pinning his foe in 2:20.

Seth Jones (5-2, 27-16) had his way with Chase Linder, scoring four takedowns in the first period, an escape and takedown in the second, and recorded the first Sand Springs pin at 2:26.

Freshman Blake Jones (6-1) took down Carlos Archiga for back points midway through the first period and made it 6-0 with a second period escape. Jones started the third period on top and made it a major decision with back points shortly before the buzzer.

Joseph Mattison (0-1) made his varsity debut at 138 against Tacoma Tipton and suffered a 1:30 fall. Then Preston Medlin (0-4) went down against State Qualifier Spencer Schickram in 2:51, bringing the Poncans with a single point at 17-16.

Scott Patton (7-1, 42-23) got the Sandites back on track, pinning Tristan Tracy in only 39 seconds, then Chris Kirby (5-2, 27-12) outdid his teammate with a pin of Spencer Shook in only 21 seconds.

Dayvon Taylor (6-2, 29-22) had little difficulty with Landon Newlin, taking an 8-1 lead with back points into the second period, where he immediately escaped and scored for an 11-1 lead before felling his foe in 2:58.

State Qualifier Abram Arechiga kept the visitors alive with a 14-5 major decision against Santana Naugle (0-1), but the 195-pound forfeit to Riley Magee (3-2, 8-7) clinched the dual for Sand Springs.

Freshman standout Kaden Glass (2-0) pinned HB Bowers in eleven seconds for the fastest Sandite fall of the season. It also ranks as the third-fastest all-time at the 220-weight class for Sand Springs. Delvin Jordan Jr. holds the record for that weight class at nine seconds.

Ponca ended on a strong note with a 5-1 decision by Luke Kirchenbauer over Josh Fincannon (3-3, 17-18).

Sand Springs Wrestling will return to action Tuesday when they host No. 10 Stillwater (2-1). Fans could see a familiar face in former Sandite freshman State Champion Carter Young, who transferred to Pioneer town during the off season.

CPHS Basketball: Undefeated Sandites bury Bartlesville 64-42, Savage scores 20

Consistent with the season thus far, the Sandites handled their opponent, but it was far from easy. In the second-highest ranked conference in the state, nothing comes easy.

The No. 17 ranked Bartlesville boys’ basketball team (2-3, 0-2) hung tight with No. 8 Sand Springs (4-0, 3-0) until halfway through the third period before the home team finally pulled away. The game marked the Sandites’ first 4-0 start since 2015.

Cale Savage had a breakout night with eleven points in the first period alone, leading his team to an 18-15 advantage with three three-pointers. Meanwhile the two teams combined for only twelve points in the second quarter, which was a 4-0 shutout till the final minute. Jaylin Oliver and Josh Minney traded threes to close the half, and the Sandites secured a 27-18 lead against the No. 9 defense in 6A.

Bartlesville mounted a comeback attempt in the third quarter, going on a six-point streak to cut their deficit to 29-24, but the Sandites retaliated with a 16-2 run to make it 45-26. Tayo Dina knocked down four straight and Simpson scored on a steal for a 45-32 deficit to start the fourth.

The final stanza was the highest-scoring quarter for the Sandites, and they effectively put the Bruins out of commission early on. The visitors went foul crazy and thirteen of the Sandites’ nineteen points came from the charity stripe. The home team closed out the night on a six-point run for their biggest lead of the game.

Savage led the Sandites for the second time in his career and first time this season with a personal-best twenty points. He was a perfect six-for-six in the field and five-for-five from outside the arc. Minney scored a career-high twelve points, and Marlo Fox added eleven to put three Sandites in double digits. Davon Richardson was held to a season-low eight points but pulled in a team-high ten rebounds.

The Sandites will return to action Thursday at 8:00 p.m. against the Wichita Defenders (4-1) at the Tulsa Memorial Veterans Arena Invitational. On Friday they will play Southwest Christian Academy (5-2) at 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday they will play the HFC Warriors (5-5) at 1:30 p.m. Sand Springs has gone undefeated at the Memorial Tournament three years in a row.

Bartlesville will host Bixby (1-3, 0-2) Friday at 8:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites dominate defending FVC Champions 66-48

The defending Frontier Valley Conference Champions from No. 9 ranked Bartlesville saw their seventeen-straight conference win streak snapped by No. 11 Sand Springs Tuesday night, and it wasn’t even close. The Sandites jumped out to an insurmountable 18-5 first period lead and rode it to a 66-48 finish behind 21-point performances by Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter and Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson.

Kersgieter led the team in scoring for the sixth time this season and had a double-double with thirteen rebounds. Johnson led the team for the second time this year, and Missouri State Softball-commit Jacie Taber had a career night with fifteen points and eight rebounds.

The Sandites (5-2, 3-0) came into their Tuesday night game 1-2 against ranked 6A teams despite playing like a State contender against lesser foes. They have outscored unranked opponents by an average of 91-43 but lost 74-62 to No. 8 Ponca City and 57-44 to No. 5 Shawnee, and needed overtime to beat No. 20 Jenks. The team needed a statement win to reassert themselves in the rankings after dropping from the No. 1 spot earlier this season.

They made their statement in style, overcoming a team with multiple Division One recruits, who was ranked second in 6A defensively coming into the night. Now it’s Bartlesville (3-2, 1-1) who is in need of a statement win, and they’ll get their shot Friday against No. 13 Bixby (4-1, 2-0).

The Sandites could not have asked for a more perfect start to the evening, taking a 12-0 lead with layups from Johnson, Regalado, and Kersgieter. The Bruins rimmed out on their first four shots and committed five penalties before the Sandites had one, leaving it open for a 6-of-9 run at the free throw line in the first quarter.

Rachael Simpson finally ended the Bruin drought with a layup and Nevada-commit Jena’ Williams scored the first three-pointer of the game soon after, but the Sandites ended the period up 18-5.

Johnson hit back-to-back field goals for their biggest lead of the half at 25-7, then the Bruins began finding their stride. Neither team scored more than two baskets in a row in the second period, but the Sandites managed to win the stanza 14-13 for a 32-18 locker room advantage.

Johnson led all scorers in the first half with eleven points while Chloe Martin did eight points in damage for the visitors. Both teams came away with five steals, but the Sandites won the rebound battle 24 to 11.

Sand Springs reclaimed their eighteen-point advantage four times in the third period and pushed it to twenty after putbacks from Taber and Kersgieter. Bartlesville tried to chip away at their deficit with triples from Simpson, Martin, and Elise Cone, but Johnson hit two free throws to close the period 49-31.

The Bruins began to collapse early in the fourth quarter, giving up an 8-3 run for their biggest deficit of the night at 57-35. Williams hit a long three to get her team back on track, but despite putting up their biggest quarter of the night, they were way too far behind to make a comeback.

Lady Sandite Basketball will get a week off before traveling to Muskogee (1-3, 0-2) next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

CPHS Basketball Preview: Bartlesville at Sand Springs

The Charles Page High School boys and girls basketball teams will return to action Tuesday evening in their second home games of the season at the Ed Dubie Field House. Both Sandite squads will look to remain undefeated in Frontier Valley Conference action when they take on Bartlesville, beginning with the girls at 6:00 p.m.

The Sand Springs boys are undefeated at 3-0 for the No. 8 ranking in Class 6A and are 2-0 in conference action. Last week they pulled off a tough 54-45 win over No. 18 Broken Arrow (1-2).

No. 17 Bartlesville (2-2, 0-1) lost their conference opener to Owasso but made it to the Broken Arrow Classic finals where they topped East Central and Putnam City before falling to Stillwater.

6’2” Senior Tayo Dina has been the hot commodity at Bartlesville for several seasons with tallies of 26 points against East Central and 18 against Putnam. 6’4” junior Davon Richardson is the bread and butter for Sand Springs, leading in all three games with an average of 19.

The Sandites are fourth in 6A defensively, allowing only 48 points per game, and Bartlesville has one of the lowest-scoring offenses at only 49 points per game. The Bruins also boast a top-ten defense, but Sand Springs is averaging 60 points per outing for a twelve-point margin of victory.

The two teams split wins last season. Bartlesville won on their home court 59-52, but Sand Springs prevailed 67-63 in the Area playoffs. Neither team has won on the other’s home court since Bartlesville rejoined the conference for the 2014-2015 season. The teams’ records are tied at 4-4 during that time, but the Sandites are 3-0 at home.

Bartlesville (2-2)
L 58 - 65 No. 15 Owasso
W 60 - 54 No. 17 East Central

Both the Sand Springs and Bartlesville girls’ teams are out to prove themselves. Bartlesville won the FVC title last year, Sand Springs won it the year prior. Both were State Qualifiers and first-round knockouts last season. Both have taken early losses. Both want to reassert themselves as serious title contenders. Both are also led by new Head Coaches.

While Sand Springs hosts a deep roster with an array of collegiate-level talent, they’ve been led almost exclusively by Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter with 22 points per game. Destiny Johnson has had a couple of 20+point games and is averaging 13. Bartlesville has been led by junior Chloe Martin and Nevada-commit Jena Williams with twenty points apiece in multiple games.

Sand Springs went 3-1 last week with commanding wins over Broken Arrow and Tulsa Memorial. They were upset by Shawnee, however, and needed overtime to knock off Jenks for third place in the Bishop Kelley Invitational.

The Lady Sandites are the highest-scoring team in all of 6A with 76 points per game and have the sixth-largest margin of victory at 21.8 points. However, they’re only 26th defensively, giving up 54 points per game.

Bartlesville is practically the opposite of Sand Springs, relying on the second-best defense in 6A for their massive wins. They allow only 36 points per game and win by 20.5, but are still a solid fourteenth in offense with 56 points per game.

The Bruins also went 3-1 last week, starting their season Tuesday. They easily handled Owasso and Nathan Hale, but ran into a tough Edmond North team and had to settle for third place at the Broken Arrow Tournament with a brutal doubling of Holland Hall.

Bartlesville was undefeated in the regular season last year, topping Sand Springs 53-42 in conference action, but the Sandites spoiled their 25-game streak in the Area Championship with an identical score. Sand Springs is 6-2 against Bartlesville in the past four seasons and the Bruins haven’t won at the Dubie since the Spring of 2016.
