CPHS Basketball: Girls improve to 6-0 in FVC with 52-41 win over Broken Arrow, Johnson scores 21
/It wasn’t the prettiest game of the season, but the Class 6A No. 9 Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (10-4) improved to 6-0 in Frontier Valley Conference play with a 52-41 Tuesday night win over Broken Arrow (2-10, 1-6). Junior standout Destiny Johnson led the way with 21 points, closely followed by University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter with eighteen.
Johnson missed a pair of free throws to start the game, but took a rebound to the house to make up for it on the next possession. Kersgieter followed it up with a pair of field goals, then Isabella Regalado iced a three for a 10-0 lead.
That advantage quickly evaporated, however. Kinsey Callen and Aaliya Nascimento cut it to 10-5 by the end of the first quarter. Bree Berge hit a three-pointer to kick off the second quarter, but the Lady Tigers went on an eight-point run to tie it up. Berge scored again for the Sandites, then Callen hit another three for the Tigers’ first lead of the game, 16-15.
Johnson made a three-point play and Kersgieter hit a free throw. Callen and Kersgieter exchanges twos, then Callen hit a three for the 21-21 tie. Kersgieter hit another basket to bring her first-half total to ten, but Callen drained her fifth three of the night to take a 24-23 halftime advantage with seventeen points.
Nascimento added to the Tiger lead with back-to-back layups to start the third quarter. Johnson rebounded a blocked Regalado three to get the Sandites in the book, but the visitors held the lead for most of the period before Sand Springs closed out the stanza with eleven-straight points to end the quarter 38-33.
Sand Springs continued to pull ahead in the fourth quarter and reestablished their double-digit lead with a three-point play from Johnson. Callen hit a two, Johnson scored three more from the stripe, Jada Hvtch scored her first basket, then Kersgieter added two more free throws to finish up 52-41.
The Sandites keyed in pretty well on Broken Arrow’s deep ball in the second half, holding the Tigers to one three-pointer on nine attempts, but Nascimento picked up the slack and finished with fourteen points. Callen managed only one basket in the second half and finished with a team-high nineteen.
Sand Springs will take a week off before taking on their biggest test of the season at No. 2 Bartlesville (12-0, 6-0). The Bruins and Sandites are the top two teams in the conference and the only undefeated teams left. Broken Arrow will return to action Thursday against 5A No. 5 Booker T. Washington (8-4) in the first round of the Jenks-Union Tournament.
