CPHS Track: Aden Baughman wins State Championship in 800 meter run

Charles Page High School sophomore Aden Baughman has been utterly unstoppable in the 800 meter run this season, blowing away competitors left and right everywhere he goes. He has won six out of seven track meets, capping the year with a 6A State Championship win in Yukon.

Not only did he win the State Championship with the fastest performance of his career, but he won with a three-second margin of victory over the runner-up. The 1:53.16 run was a remarkable improvement over his Regional run of 1:55.42, which was already the fastest time of the season for any high school athlete at any meet in Oklahoma, at any classification. His new time was only 1.46 seconds behind the all-time State Tournament record set in 2007.

The next four runners after Baughman were all seniors, leaving him with a 4.35 margin of victory over any runner he'll compete against next year. The Sandite still has one event left, and will compete in the 1600 run at 2:35 this afternoon.

Kris Edwards took tenth place in shot put with throws of 44'01.50", 45'01.50", and 47'01.50". His best mark was just one inch short of his career-best. Moore junior Patrick Larrison took first in the event with a ten-foot margin of victory. He threw 63'03.00".

Tiqvah Soap placed sixteenth in the 800 meter run with a career-best performance of 2:30.79. Jenks junior Ally Ryan took first place in 2:09.28.

CPHS Track: Cheyenne Walden wins eighth State Championship

Charles Page High School senior Cheyenne Walden won her third-straight State title in the 3200 meter run Friday afternoon in Yukon. She defeated the Runner-Up by more than twenty-two seconds for her 24th-straight first-place finish and 28th win overall. She hasn't lost in the event since placing third at State during her freshman year.

The Oklahoma State University-commit already held seven State titles coming into this weekend's OSSAA 6A State Championship, and she still has the opportunity to win one more before her high school career comes to a close. She will also compete Saturday in the 1600, where she is also the defending State Champion. When looking only at official OSSAA sanctioned events, Walden is the most decorated athlete in Sand Springs history.

The Lady Sandite 3200 relay team, comprised of Walden, Alexis Davis, Elizabeth Watts, and Tiqvah Soap, took eleventh place with a time of 10:29.79. Bartlesville took first place in 9:35.63.

The boys' 3200 relay team, comprised of Jaelyn Jackson, Ian Baustert, Jacob Garbey, and Aden Baughman, took twelfth place with a time of 8:20.89, beating their season-best by nearly two seconds. It was the best Sandite performance since the 2013 team ran a pair of 8:17's to win the Skiatook meet and Regional meet. Putnam City won the State title with a 7:59.67 performance.

Baughman will compete again Saturday in the 800 and 1600 runs, and Soap will run in the 800. Baughman won the Regional Championship last week with the fastest performance of the year for any Oklahoma high school athlete in any classification.

Colton Washington took seventh place in the long jump, leaping 21'11.25". Westmoore sophomore Anthony Riley had the top mark at 24'05.25".

Kris Edwards will compete Saturday in shot put.

The Lady Sandites are currently sitting in 9th place as a team, while the boys have yet to score any points.

2X Sandite of the Week: Aden Baughman wins Regional Championship with fastest time in State

Charles Page High School sophomore Aden Baughman was selected as Sandite of the Week for the second time this season for his remarkable performance at last weekend's Regional Championship track meet.

Aden Baughman - PRs

300 Hurdles - 49.12
800 Run - 1:55.42
1600 Run - 4:30.42
3200 Run - 10:48.89
1 Mile XC - 6:12
2 Mile XC - 10:46

The young star has transformed over the past year from a solid competitor to a State contender, winning the 800 meter run at five out of six track meets this season. He came in Runner-Up at the Frontier Valley Conference meet two weeks ago, but knocked more than two seconds off his time at Regionals.

Not only was his 1:55.42 performance the best of his career, but it was the best time of the year for any Oklahoma high school athlete at any classification. According to Assistant Coach Rodney Echohawk, Baughman's time is the second-best in school history.

Baughman is also a State contender in the 1600 where he qualified with a runner-up performance and a career-best 4:30.42. He hasn't won the 1600 yet, but he has come in runner-up at three-straight meets, and has improved on his personal record all three times.

Baughman also qualified for State as part of the 3200 relay team alongside Jacob Garbey, Jaelyn Jackson, and Ian Baustert. They took third place in 8:32.64.

CPHS Golf: Carson Griggs comes in Runner-Up at 6A State Tournament

Charles Page High School junior Carson Griggs made his third trip to the OSSAA 6A State Tournament this week and had his best performance yet, finishing Runner-Up by two strokes.

The two-day three-round tournament was held at the Golf Club of Edmond instead of Stillwater's Karsten Creek due to flooding at the usual host site.

Griggs played excellently all three rounds, but his best performance was on day one when he shot three strokes under par. His 67-stroke finish was the second-best performance of any golfer during any round. State Champion Austin Eckroat had the best single-round score at 66.

Griggs sat in second place after the first round, then shot a 71 in round two and dropped to third place at the end of day one behind Eckroat and Brock Polhill, both of Edmond North. On day two he made up for lost ground with the best performance of the day, shooting a 68. He jumped five strokes ahead of Polhill, but was still two short of Eckroat, who scored 68 in round two and 70 in round three.

72 athletes competed at the event, with an average score of 241. Griggs finished with a total score of 206. Griggs previously tied for nineteenth place as a freshman and twentieth place as a sophomore with scores of 238 and 242 at Karsten Creek. Edmond North won their fifteenth State Championship as a team. The Huskies hold the record for most State Championships won by any school at any classification in Oklahoma.
