Cheyenne Walden wins ninth Frontier Valley Conference Championship

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Oklahoma State University-signed senior Cheyenne Walden earned her ninth Frontier Valley Conference title last week at Union High School. She was the only Sandite to take home a conference title, but Aden Baughman took silver while Kristopher Edwards and the Girls' 3200 relay team earned bronze.

Walden placed second in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:10.98, just three seconds behind Bartlesville's Rilee Rigdon. She was the defending champion in both the 1600 and 3200. She retained her title in the 3200 with a time of 10:48.23, her fastest time of the season, less than three seconds behind her career-best. She topped Bartlesville Runner-Up Shay Stayton by 53 seconds.

Walden has won four Conference titles in the 3200, one in the 1600, and four Cross Country titles.

Madelynn Adams tied her personal record in the 200 meter dash, taking thirteenth place in 29.9 seconds. Stephanie Genn set a PR of 1:07.15 for tenth place in the 400. Southwestern Oklahoma State University-signed senior Alexis Davis set a PR of 12:47.53 for a sixth place finish in the 3200. The 1600 relay team finished less than a second behind their season-best with a seventh place finish in 4:38.22. The 3200 relay team took third in 10:36.74.

The Sandite boys saw an end to their run of four-straight track meets with a first-place finisher, but Baughman came close with a second place finish in the 800 meter run. He previously won four-straight, but he still gave the second-best performance of his career and was less than half a second behind his PR and exactly half a second behind Owasso's Carson Ball.

Kyle Keener took eighth in the 110 hurdles with a PR of 17.31. Josh Ivy knocked nearly two seconds off his PR, taking fifteenth in the 300 hurdle in 50.07. Alex Newport PRed in both hurdle events, finishing eleventh in the 110 in 21.34, and sixteenth in the 300 in 51.09. Joel Mackey placed sixth in the 100 in 11.49 and fourth in the 200 in 22.59. Ben Norte PRed for the fourth straight week with a seventeenth place finish in the 200 in 24.06. Jaelyn Jackson took sixth in the 800 in 2:02.19. Ian Baustert set a PR 4:45.93 in the 1600 for sixth place. Edwards took third in shot put with a distance of 45'08.00" and Malonn Moyer placed sixth with a PR of 43'08.25". Colton Washington took fourth place in the long jump with a PR distance of 22'01.00". The 3200 relay team placed fourth in 8:32.73

Overall, both the boys and girls came in seventh out of ten teams. The Union Redskins won Conference titles in both divisions.

CPHS Golf: Carson Griggs comes in runner-up at Bartlesville Bruin Invitational

The Charles Page High School Boys' Golf team traveled to the Bartlesville Bruin Invitational at Adams Golf Course last week. They were one member short of a full lineup and thus couldn't earn a team placement, but Carson Griggs took second place, Kyler Gaylor tied for 29th, and JT Bristow took 49th.

Griggs was consistent through both halves of the two-round tournament, shooting 77 in round one and 76 in round two. With a total score of 153 on a par 144, Griggs tied Sapulpa's Daniel Reed for first place, but then lost in a playoff for the top medal.

Gaylor had a tough first round with a score of 93, but followed it up with an 84 to finish at 177. Bristow shot a 216 with rounds of 109 and 107.

Owasso took first place in the tournament with a team score of 652, followed by Bishop Kelley at 653. The home team came in third at 656, tailed by Sapulpa at 657.

The season wrapped up for Bristow and Gaylor Monday at the Regional Tournament in Owasso. Bristow shot a 224 with rounds of 114 and 110, and Gaylor shot a 164 with rounds of 79 and 85. Griggs scored a 152 with rounds of 80 and 72 to tie for sixth place. He will advance to the State Tournament at the Golf Club of Edmond next Monday and Tuesday.

CPHS Tennis: Madison Englestead qualifies for State Championship

The Charles Page High School tennis teams are in the final stretch of the season. After competing at the Union Invitational last week and the Regional Tournament this week, one Lady Sandite will progress to the State Tournament. Madison Englestead will compete in No. 2 Singles at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center this Friday and Saturday. The boys will play their Regional Tournament next Monday at Union.

At last Monday's Union Invitational the boys' team took thirteenth place. Dakota Mitchell placed thirteenth in No. 1 Singles with a victory over Cascia Hall. Quintin Wimer defeated Roman Bandy of Metro Christian and Jordan Knox of Henryetta for tenth place in No. 2 Singles. Caleb Bundy and Aries Howard placed sixteenth in No. 1 Doubles, while Logan Bateman and Dalten Fix placed twelfth in No. 2 Doubles with a victory over Metro Christian. The girls took sixteenth at Union, led by Englestead in twelfth place with a victory over Broken Arrow's Sheridian Reeder.

Dakota Mitchell and Quintin Wimer both qualified for State last season. Mitchell qualified in No. 1 Singles but didn't place. Wimer qualified in No. 2 Doubles with Nashoba Pannell, who graduated last year. Wimer and Pannell placed eighth.

CPHS Golf: Griggs, Persons, and Kinard qualify for State Tournament

Ashton Persons (left) and Madison Kinard (right) both qualified for their first trip to the State Tournament. (Submitted).

The Charles Page High School golf teams qualified three individuals for the State Championship tournament this past week. Carson Griggs qualified for the boys while Ashton Persons and Madison Kinard qualified for the girls.

Griggs was the top qualifying individual with a score of 152 in a two-round par 144 tournament at Bailey Ranch Golf Course in Owasso. He shot eight large in round one while Kyler Gaylor was seven large. They went opposite directions on the second round, however, with Gaylor shooting an 85 to fall just short of qualifying while Griggs broke even.

The Lady Sandites will compete at Ponca City Country Club Wednesday and Thursday while Griggs will play at The Golf Club of Edmond next Monday and Tuesday.

CPHS Baseball ends regular season with three-straight wins

Senior pitcher Josh Cordell picked up two wins on the mound in the past week.

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (16-18 overall, 4-10 district) kept busy last week, playing five games in as many days to wrap up the regular season on a high note and build some momentum before this week's Regional Playoff.

The Sandites saw their winning record evaporate after eight-straight losses in the past couple of weeks. They started last week with back-to-back losses to the District Champions from Owasso (28-3, 13-1), but rebounded with a 10-0 shutout of Muskogee and followed it with wins over Tulsa NOAH and Booker T. Washington.

The Sandites will return to action this Thursday in Jenks for the Regional tournament. They will take on the 6A-3 District Runner-Up host team (19-12) at 11:30 a.m. On the opposite side of the bracket is Sapulpa (13-20) and Enid (22-11).

The Sandites have yet to meet Jenks this season. They are 1-1 against their Highway 97 rivals, losing their first meeting 1-0, but winning the second 6-5. The Plainsmen finished third in the Sandites' district, winning both meetings 4-0 and 5-1.

Owasso 5 CPHS 0

(Hits: OHS 7, CPHS 3. Errors: OHS 0, CPHS 0. LOB: OHS 7, CPHS 3.)

The District Champs took the lead right out of the gate with a run from Connor Beichler in the first inning. The Sandites picked up hits from Mack Thompson in the first inning and Cale Savage in the second, but both were left stranded.

Beichler scored another run in the top of the third off a double from Caleb Denny. Denny came in on a home run from Nate Wohlgemuth for the 4-0 advantage. Thompson added another single in the bottom of the inning but was left stranded once again. Owasso scored their fifth and final run in the fifth inning as Zach Jaccarino scored on a passed ball.

Cowley County Community College-signed senior Hunter Greathouse (3-6) got the start and the loss on the mound, pitching five hits, four runs, one strikeout, and three walks over three innings.

Riley Rutledge (0-0) pitched relief, recording two hits, one run, three strikeouts, and two walks in two innings.

CPHS 10 Muskogee 0

(Hits: CPHS 7, MHS 2. Errors: MHS 1, CPHS 0. LOB: MHS 6, CPHS 5.)

The Sandites recorded their fourth shutout and fifth ten-run victory of the season Tuesday evening in Muskogee (4-24, 0-14) on a make-up district game. Josh Cordell (5-3) got the start and the win on the mound with seven strikeouts in less than five innings. He walked three and only gave up one hit.

Savage got them in the swing of things with a second inning double, then scored on a single from Kyler Copeland. Courtesy-runner Garrett McCallie stole second and took third on a passed ball, then scored on a wild pitch. Josh Taber and Thompson drew walks and came in on a Treyce Tolbert double that caused the Roughers to change pitchers.

The change on the mound didn't help much as Sand Springs went back to work in the third inning. Braden Askew drew a walk and made it to third on a wild pitch, then scored on an error that landed Cal Watkins at first. Ty Steelman was hit by pitch and both runners scored on a single from Taber for the 7-0 lead.

Tolbert scored on a single from Savage in the fourth, Thompson scored on a passed ball in the sixth, and Tolbert scored yet again on a wild pitch to clench the run-rule victory.

Braden Millican (2-0) pitched the final inning and a half on the mound, giving up one hit and no walks.

CPHS 4 Tulsa NOAH 2

(Hits: NOAH 6, CPHS 5. Errors: NOAH 1, CPHS 1. LOB: NOAH 9, CPHS 5.)

Askew (2-2) didn't pitch his lowest-scoring game of the season, but he absolutely shattered his strikeout record. The Sandite previously recorded a 4-1 victory on the mound against Rogers, Arkansas with five strikeouts, but he more than doubled that performance with thirteen against the Northeast Oklahoma Association of Homeschools team (16-9).

The thirteen strikeouts was the most any Sandite or even multiple Sandites have recorded in a single game this season. Greathouse has the next two performances at ten strikeouts apiece, one of which was done in only five innings.

As impressive as Askew's performance was, the Jaguars had an equally incredible time on the mound behind Matt Merrill, who is signed with Pittsburg State University and is being scouted by the Dodgers and Mariners organizations. Merrill got the edge on Askew with fourteen strikeouts and only three walks to Askew's four. Askew gave up six hits and Merrill allowed five. But Askew was more consistent and pitched without a blemish, while Merrill threw three wild pitches and committed an error.

Watkins was the first to cross home plate, scoring on a double from Thompson in the top of the third. NOAH loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but Merrill flied out to Tolbert in center field to save the inning.

The rest of Sand Springs's runs came in the fourth inning thanks to a series of Jaguar mistakes. Greathouse singled, but looked to be in danger of getting stranded after the next two batters struck out swinging. Rutledge came in clutch with an RBI double, then scored on a wild pitch for the 3-0 lead. Savage walked, took second and third on a pair of wild pitches, then scored on an error by Merrill.

The Jaguars tried to battle back in the bottom of the fifth after Evan Jacoby walked and Sam Replogle singled. Askew hung two strikeouts on the board before Merrill singled in both runners. Merrill was left stranded after a third strikeout, however, and the Jags wouldn't score again.

CPHS 5 BTW 4

(Hits: BTW 8, CPHS 7. Errors: BTW 1, CPHS 1. LOB: CPHS 5, BTW 4.)

Cordell got off to another impressive start on the mound against Booker T. Washington (9-26), pitching two strikeouts in the first inning.

Taber got the Sandites on the board that same inning thanks to a pair of sacrifices. The senior drew a walk, took second on an error and third on a fly out from Thompson before scoring on a ground out by Tolbert.

Next to cross the plate was Tolbert on a single from Greathouse in the bottom of the third.

The Hornets cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth as Connor O'Malley doubled and scored on a sacrifice on the next play. Sand Springs had a quick answer in the bottom of the inning as Savage scored on a single from Watkins. Watkins came in soon after on a single from Braden Cook for the 4-1 lead.

Booker T. added a run from Easton Cope behind the bat of Ben Curry in the top of the fifth. Greathouse retaliated with a single to score Thompson in the bottom of the inning. Ramsey Gates hit the final run of the game on a solo homer, and the Sandites held on for the win.

Cordell got the win with six strikeouts and no walks against four hits and one run in four innings. Brock Youngblood (2-5) pitched three innings in relief and gave up three runs and four hits against two strikeouts and no walks.

CPHS Soccer season comes to an end with losses to Union and Deer Creek

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The season came to a close for the Charles Page High School soccer teams with both the boys and girls falling to Union and Deer Creek in back-to-back game days.

The girls (1-13, 0-7) suffered through a rough season, graduating several of their prior year's top-scorers, then losing half of their remaining starters with injuries early in the year. The Lady Sandites never played a single district game with a full starting lineup.

First-year Head Coach Matt Miller will lose five varsity players this year and will look to rebuild for the 2018 campaign. Brooklyn Turner will continue her career at Redlands Community College, Megan Deshazo will play for Northern Oklahoma College, and Kyndal Zicker will play at Northeastern State University. Slovakian exchange student Eliska Dodokova will return to her home country and play for their national team this summer. The Lady Sandites will also graduate Sybil West.

The boys (5-9, 1-6) didn't pull off a wining record, but they won two more game than their prior two seasons. The Sandites went 3-12 last year and 3-10 the year before that. Five of their losses were by a single goal, and three were in overtime.

Head Coach Garland Betts will graduate several major contributors this season. Kristian Fairchild, Ignacio Garcia, Cody Gurley, Alex Hernandez, Logan Jeffus, Gabriel Jeffus, Pablo Schinnerer, and Adrian Soberano all spent their last season with Charles Page. Garcia will continue his career at Oklahoma Wesleyan University.

The Lady Sandites lost both of their final two games by scores of 5-0. Junior Goalkeeper Abigail Banks notched eight saves in a Monday night loss to Deer Creek (10-4, 4-3). They ended the year against the District Champions from Union (13-1, 7-0).

The boys lost both of their final games 4-2. On Monday night they fell to the District Runners-Up from Deer Creek (10-4, 6-1), despite goals from Kaleb Brooks and Jeffus. Brooks scored the first goal of the game just six minutes in, but the Antlers scored back-to-back before Jeffus tied it up just seconds before halftime. Deer Creek added two more nets in the second half for the win.

The District Champions from Union (10-1, 8-0) played a fairly close half-game against the Sandites. The Redskins took a 1-0 lead before Garcia tied it up with a penalty kick. The kick was awarded after the Redskin goal keeper slid into the leg of Gurley and sent him to the hospital with a break. Union resumed the lead and made it 4-1 before Brooks notched a second goal shortly before halftime. After lightning struck in the area, the rest of the game was called off and the season concluded.
