CPHS Basketball: Boys to host home Regional, Girls head to Union

The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association released its Regional post-season pairings Thursday afternoon, and the Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team will get to host a home Regional Championship, while the girls’ team will travel to Union High School.

Unlike some sports, every basketball team gets a shot at the post-season. There are eight Regional Tournaments in Class 6A with four teams apiece. The first round is single-elimination, but both the Regional Champions and the Runners-Up will advance to the Area playoff. The Regional Runners-Up will then have to win their next two games to advance to the eight-team State Tournament, while the Regional Champions will only have to win one of their next two.

The Sandite boys will host No. 11 Broken Arrow (14-6), Bixby (6-12), and Enid (8-13). The Sandites will play Enid Friday, February 28th at 8:00 p.m. Broken Arrow will play Bixby at 6:30 p.m. The winners of the first round games will play again Saturday the 29th at 7:00 p.m.

Sand Springs boasts the No. 11 offense in 6A and the No. 8 defense, and wins by an average score of 63-53. Enid is 22nd in offense, 21st in defense, and loses by an average score of 59-57. Bixby is No. 17 in offense and dead last in defense, losing by an average score of 67-61. The Sandites have beaten Bixby twice this season by an average of 20 points.

Broken Arrow started the season 13-1 and beat the Sandites 63-51 on their home court, but since then they are 1-5. The two will meet on the 21st in the final regular season game for both teams, and this time it will be fought at the Ed Dubie Field House in what will likely be a preview of the Regional finals. The Tigers are 20th in offense and 7th in defense, winning by an average score of 60-53.

The Sand Springs girls will play against Broken Arrow (8-11) in the first round, Thursday the 27th at 6:30 p.m. On the other side of the bracket is No. 6 Union (16-4) vs. Muskogee (6-14) at 8:00 p.m. The finals will be played Saturday the 29th at 1:30 p.m.

Sand Springs is No. 10 in offense and No. 17 in defense, winning by an average score of 56-48. Broken Arrow is No. 9 in offense and No. 31 in defense, losing by an average score of 58-56. The Sandites already beat the Tigers 80-78 on the road in January, and will host them in the regular season finale on the 21st, setting up back-to-back battles between the two.

Union is 21st in offense and 3rd in defense, winning by an average score of 49-39. They beat the Sandites twice this season, 39-25 and 32-30. Muskogee is 24th in offense and 29th in defense, losing by an average score of 56-46. The Sandites beat Muskogee 86-64 last month.

All three girls’ games will be played at the Union Multipurpose Athletic Center at 6836 South Mingo Road in Tulsa.

The Area playoff sites will be determined after the Regionals have concluded, and will be at neutral venues. Girls games will be played Thursday, March 5th and Saturday, March 7th. Boys Area will be Friday, March 6th, and Saturday, March 7th. The State Tournament will be played Thursday, March 12th through Saturday, March 14th.

The Sand Springs boys own four Regional titles, most recently in 2019. The girls own seven Regional titles, including three in a row from 2017 to 2019.

CPHS Basketball: Girls rout Owasso 64-44, Armstead scores 16

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (13-6, 6-5) rolled to a dominant 64-44 win against Owasso (4-16, 2-9) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House to snap a three-game losing streak and get back above .500 in Frontier Valley Conference play. They were led by sophomore standout Journey Armstead with 16 points, but nine players contributed and Leyshia Morris put up a career-high 11.

Owasso took its only lead of the game with a three-pointer from sophomore Chloe Stocksen, who led her team with 16, but the Sandites went on a run for an 11-3 advantage that the Rams never recovered from. By the end of the first quarter the Sandites led 14-5.

Stocksen scored her team’s first seven points and the Sandites led 25-7 before Karson Zumwalt entered the book. The second quarter was the most explosive for the Sandites, who took a 37-18 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter was equally lopsided and the home team took its biggest lead at 55-27 before the Rams began to battle back in the fourth against the Sand Springs third string.

The Sandites had one of their best shooting performances of the season and shot a season-high 36% from three-point range. Morris led the team in accuracy, going three-of-four on the long ball.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. with a conference road game at No. 19 Jenks (9-9, 4-6), who they previously defeated 56-46 at home and 54-41 at the Enid Tournament. Owasso will host No. 7 Sapulpa (17-3, 10-1), who routed the Rams 50-26 earlier this year.

CPHS Basketball: Girls drop 32-30 thriller at No. 6 Union

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (12-6, 5-5) took on their third top-ten opponent in a row Friday night at the Union Multipurpose Athletic Center, and fell 32-30 to No. 6 Union (16-3, 9-1), despite winning the second half 15-8.

Kaylen Nelson scored the opening bucket for the Redskins, Journey Armstead retaliated, then the home team scored eight in a row before Sophia Regalado broke up the run. Hailey Jackson hit two from the charity stripe and Armstead added a second bucket, but Nelson bookended the quarter with a three for the 15-8 lead.

Neither team made any headway in the second quarter till Nelson ended the half with a traditional three to make it 24-15 for the Redskins’ biggest lead of the game.

The Sandites came storming back in the third. Makenzie Malham scored the opening bucket, but Sand Springs went on a 10-2 run to close the quarter 28-25. Madison Burris came up with a clutch three to cut the deficit to 32-30 late in the fourth, but those would be the final points of the game.

Union played a game of keep-away in the final two minutes and the Sandites had to foul three times just to reach the bonus. Finally, Burris sent Jayla Burgess to the line for a 1-and-1 with 14.5 seconds remaining. Burgess missed the shot, Armstead rebounded, and the Sandites took a timeout with 8.4 to play. Union defense prevailed and Takayla Pitts tied up Jackson to drain the clock.

Nelson led all scorers with 18 points and was the only player on either team in double digits. Armstead was held to a season-low nine-point effort to lead the Sandites, followed by Jackson with eight.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a conference home game against Owasso (4-14, 2-7), who they beat 62-45 in December. Union will get a rematch with No. 7 Sapulpa (15-3, 8-1) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Chieftains gave Union their only conference loss of the season 58-45 in December.

CPHS Basketball: Girls fall 63-46 to Sapulpa, Armstead scores 18

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (12-5, 5-4) suffered a Frontier Valley Conference loss Tuesday Night at the Chieftain, falling 63-46 to Highway 97 rival No. 7 Sapulpa (15-3, 8-1).

The Chieftain starting five had 11 inches on the Sandites, and out-rebounded them 34 to 22. They also out-shot their visitors and won the turnover battle.

The Sandites got help from a foul-happy first half, scoring nine points on twelve fouls, but still trailed 34-22 going into the locker room after a 12-point performance from Temira Poindexter and 11 from Ray Osborn.

Osborn picked up her third and fourth fouls less than a minute into the second half and missed most of the third quarter. Her absence contributed to the Sandites’ best stanza, a 13-13 tie. Journey Armstead put up nine points in the quarter and got her team back within single digits at 44-35, but Stailee Heard made a buzzer-beating three for the Chieftains.

Sapulpa got hot again in the fourth and took their biggest lead at 63-44 before Raegan Padilla made her way into the score book with the final points of the game.

Poindexter led all scorers with 21 points, but the Chieftains had three in double digits. Osborn scored 15 despite missing most of the second half, and Alexis Lewis added 13. Armstead paced the Sandites with 18, followed by Hailey Jackson with 10.

Sand Springs will return to action with a huge conference road game against No. 6 Union (14-3, 7-1) Friday at 6:30 p.m. They lost their previous meeting with the Redskins 39-25 at home. The Chieftains will travel to No. 10 Bixby (11-6, 5-3) Friday at 6:30 p.m. They edged out the Spartans 52-49 in overtime in December.
