Longtime Sandite Ed Dubie inducted into University of Tulsa Hall of Fame

Former Sand Springs coach and athletic director Ed Dubie was inducted into the University of Tulsa Hall of Fame this September.

Dubie was a four-sport athlete, lettering twelve times at TU from 1928 through 1931. He played football, baseball, track, and basketball. Playing the quarterback position, he led TU to a 26-6 win over Arkansas in the first game ever played at Skelly Stadium in 1930. He was a starting player on the basketball team and was team captain for three seasons. Prior to college, he played for Bristow High School.

After graduating from TU in 1932, he refereed Big Eight and Missouri Valley football games for 25 years, chaired the Tulsa Metropolitan Area Planning Commission for 25 years, taught a church school class for 37 years, served on the Sand Springs School Board for 42 years, and defeated lung cancer along the way.

During his tenure in Sand Springs, he coached football, basketball, and baseball. His 1937 football team went undefeated. The field house at Charles Page High School was named in his honor.

Following his career with Sand Springs Public Schools, he headed the tax and insurance departments for the Sand Springs Home Interests and became a partner at the Dubie-Wells insurance agency. He also served as the head of the Tulsa Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Dubie passed in 1992 at the age of 84. His wife, Marjorie, joined him in 1998 at the age of 85.

Joining Dubie in the TU Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2017 are three-time Conference Pole Vault Champion David Smoot, Minnesota Viking Wes Hamilton, four-time All-American golfer Stacy Prammanasudh, All-Conference softball player Lauren Lindsay, and the 1982 Conference Champion Football Team. 

The induction ceremony was held Friday night, September 29th at the Lorton Performance Center at TU. The inductees were also recognized at halftime of the Tulsa-Navy football game on September 30th. 

Week Ten 6A-II rankings and predictions; a look at this weekend's games

It's the last week of the regular season, and the eight playoff-bound teams have all clinched their berths. From District One it'll be Midwest City, Lawton, Stillwater, and Putnam City. District Two will advance Booker T. Washington, Bixby, Muskogee, and Sand Springs. The teams still have one last game to try and improve their seed. 

No. 1 Booker T. Washington Hornets (Last Week No. 1) vs. No. 13 Bartlesville Bruins (13)* District 2

Booker T. (8-1, 5-0) clinched the District 2 Championship last week with a 21-0 shutout of the defending State Champions from Bixby (5-4, 4-1). The Hornets held Bixby to 115 total yards, including 11 yards on 33 runs, thanks in part to seven sacks. Thomas Grayson ran 20 times for 131 yards and all three Hornet touchdowns came in the first half. Both teams gave up two interceptions apiece with no fumbles. 

Bartlesville (1-7, 1-4) was part of a record setting night, but at their expense. The Sand Springs Sandites (5-4, 3-2) dealt the Bruins a 55-13 loss, running for over 500 yards. Noah Sunday was 22-36-227-1 passing but their run game was held to 77 yards on 25 carries and they gave up one fumble. 

The pick: BTW 58 BHS 7.

No. 2 Midwest City Bombers (2) vs. No. 4 Stillwater Pioneers (5)* District 1

The Bombers (8-1, 6-0) are one step closer to a District title after scoring a 46-25 win over Enid (3-6, 1-5). Their defense was slow-starting as both teams scored on their initial drives before the Bombers jumped ahead with five-straight touchdowns. Preston Colbert was 11-16-222-0 passing and Austin Anderson carried 19 times for 186 yards.

Stillwater (8-1, 5-1) is still in contention for the title after a 39-32 win against Putnam City (6-3, 3-3), but they'll need some help to get there. Not only will they need to beat Midwest City, but they'll also need Lawton to lose. It's impossible for the Pioneers to pass the Bombers in point-differential, so even with a fifteen-point win, they'll need the Wolverines to win by less than two points for Stillwater to host a playoff game. Tyler Disidore ran 18-110, Qwontrell Walker ran 17-111, and Garrett Leming was 11-74 in the back-and-forth affair. 

The pick: MWC 38 SHS 29.

No. 3 Lawton Wolverines (3) vs. No. 10 Deer Creek Antlers (10)* District 1

Lawton (7-2, 5-1) is still in the running for the district title, but it's almost entirely out of their hands. Even with a fifteen-point win over Deer Creek (4-5, 2-4), they'll still need Stillwater to upset Midwest City by at least eight points. Last week they throttled Putnam City West (1-8, 0-6) 44-7. Deer Creek is coming off a 34-21 loss to Choctaw (5-4, 2-4).

The pick: LHS 47 DC 14.

No. 5 Bixby Spartans (4) vs. No. 8 Sand Springs Sandites (8)* District 2

The three-time defending State Champions (5-4, 4-1) suffered a 21-0 shutout at the hands of Booker T. (8-1, 5-0). Staton King was 7-21-104-2 passing and Tucker Pawley was held to 38 yards on 19 carries. All 21 of the Hornets' points came in the first half. The Spartans will clinch a home playoff game with a win. 

Sand Springs (5-4, 3-2) did what they do best and fed the ball to Payton Scott all night long against Bartlesville (1-7, 1-4). The senior star ran for 506 yards and seven touchdowns in the 55-13 beat down. The Sandites won the turnover battle with one pick and one fumble. The Sandites can still earn a home playoff game with an upset of Bixby and a Ponca City upset of Muskogee. 

The pick: BHS 38 CPHS 29.

No. 7 Muskogee Roughers (6) vs. No. 15 Ponca City Wildcats (14)* District 2

Muskogee (4-4, 3-2) is coming off a lackluster 27-14 performance against Sapulpa (1-8, 1-5). Jacob Medrano was 18-27-203-0 passing and the Roughers were 37-139 on the ground. They'll clinch third place with a win and a Sandite loss, but if the Sandites upset Bixby it'll come down to point-differential and the Roughers have the lowest spread of the four post-season qualifiers. 

Ponca City (1-8, 1-4) is effectively out of contention, but they could still play the spoiler when it comes to post-season seeding. The Wildcats are coming off a 28-14 loss to Norman (1-8) and should theoretically be an easy win for the Roughers. However, the Wildcats have had some impressive offensive outings this season, scoring 34 against Enid and 21 against Booker T. 

The pick: MHS 39 PoHi 19.

No. 6 Putnam City Pirates (7) vs. No. 11 Enid Plainsmen (11)* District 1

Putnam City (6-3, 3-3) lost a 39-32 heart-breaker in Stillwater to seal them in at fourth in districts. The Pirates are bound for Booker T. in the post-season, but first they get a tuneup game against Enid (3-6, 1-5). A.J. Newsome was 19-33-268-0 passing while Keylhan Henderson led the ground game with 109 yards on 17 carries.

Enid (3-6, 1-5) is coming off a 46-21 loss to Midwest City (8-1, 6-0). Mason Skrimager was 27-37-191-2 passing.

The pick: PHS 40 EHS 23.

No. 9 Choctaw Yellowjackets (9) vs. No. 12 Putnam City West Patriots (12)* District 1

Choctaw (5-4, 2-4) won a 34-21 bout with Deer Creek (4-5, 2-4), but is out of playoff contention and shooting to end the year with a winning record. Putnam City West (1-8, 0-6) is coming off a 44-7 beat down from Lawton (7-2, 5-1) and is just hoping to avoid a winless district record.

The pick: CHS 35 PCW 21.

No. 14 Sapulpa Chieftains (15) vs. Broken Arrow Tigers

Sapulpa (1-8, 1-5) wrapped up their district season with a 27-14 loss to Muskogee (4-4, 3-2) and will end the year against 6A-I Broken Arrow (5-4). The Chieftains were 24-106 on the ground and 8-16-76-1 by air against the Roughers. Broken Arrow is coming off a 49-7 victory over Edmond Memorial (1-8) led by Noah Cortes with 231 yards on the ground and Kejuan Tolbert with 173.

CPHS Football Preview: Bixby at Sand Springs, home playoff game on the line

The No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School football team (5-4, 3-2) will host the three-time defending State Champions from No. 5 Bixby (5-4, 4-1) in their regular season finale Friday night at Memorial Stadium. Both teams have already clinched playoff appearances, but their seeding is very much undecided.

The Spartans and Sandites are second and fourth, respectively, in their district. With a loss, the Sandites will take on the District One Champions, likely No. 2 Midwest City (8-1, 6-0). With a win and a Ponca City upset of Muskogee, the Sandites will be the District Runners-Up and get to host a playoff game. If both Sand Springs and Muskogee win their games, it will come down to point differential and the Sandites will be guaranteed third place. If the Sandites beat Bixby by more than ten points, they can take second.

Both teams have the same record overall, but the Spartans have pulled off one more district win than the Sandites. Sand Springs went 2-2 in non-district play to the Spartans' 1-3, but the Spartans played a tougher schedule. 

Bixby defeated 6A-I Jenks (5-4) 35-18, but the Trojans weren't quite themselves at the time, starting the year 0-4 for the first time since 1968. Since then they have rattled off five-straight victories in dominant fashion. From there the Spartans fell 47-28 to Bentonville (7-2), 37-35 to No. 6 Putnam City (6-3) and 34-22 to 6A-I Westmoore (7-2). All competitive losses to quality programs. 

Sand Springs dropped their season opener 59-21 to Pulaski Academy (9-0), then gave up a 21-20 come-from-behind loss to No. 9 Choctaw (5-4) after leading for the entire game. They rebounded with a 28-14 win over No. 12 Putnam City West (1-8). The Sandites won a district bout with Sapulpa then won 26-21 over 6A-I Yukon (4-5).

Looking at mutual opponents:

• No. 14 Sapulpa (1-8, 1-5). Sand Springs beat their biggest rivals 31-16. Bixby pummeled the Chieftains 48-10. It's tough to compare scores in a rivalry game. 
• No. 15 Ponca City (1-8, 1-4). Sand Springs wrecked the Wildcats 41-7, but once again Bixby had the better performance with a 68-7 beat down.
• No. 7 Muskogee (4-4, 3-2). Bixby handily defeated the Roughers 38-23 while the Sandites fell 40-34. It's worth noting that the Sandites came back from a 30-13 deficit to a 34-30 lead before giving up a 96-yard kick return. Even then, they picked up a first down at the Muskogee thirteen-yard line before time ran out. 
• No. 1 Booker T. Washington (8-1, 5-0). Both teams were shut out by the top-ranked Hornets. Sand Springs fell 40-0, Bixby fell 21-0. 
• No. 13 Bartlesville (1-7, 1-4). The Spartans had one of their worst games of the season two weeks ago, only defeating the Bruins 37-21. The Sandites had their biggest win of the year last Friday and murdered Bartlesville 55-13. 

If both teams play their best performances of the season, the Spartans will likely be the victors. But in a year plagued by turnovers and poor execution, they could easily be upended by the Sandites who have played a relatively clean season. 

Bixby leads the series 15-12 and 8-2 in the last seven years. The Spartans won the first meeting in 1922 when Sand Springs High School was coached by A.R. Bateman. The Sandites won back-to-back from 1926-1927 and the teams didn't meet again until the 1980s when they split the series 3-3. The Sandites won the 1990s series 5-3, but the most recent saga has been rather one-sided on the part of the Spartan program. 

The Spartans are led by CPHS graduate Loren Montgomery, who was an All-State offensive lineman under Head Coach L.D. Bains. Montgomery joined Bixby in 2010 and has a coaching record of 56-34 in his eighth season. He is 8-2 against his Alma Mater and has led his team to three consecutive State Championships since the 6A split. Sandite coach Dustin Kinard is 60-58 in his eleventh year leading the program. This will be their sixth-straight year making the playoffs, which is a town record.

Sandite of the Week Payton Scott surpasses 5,000 career rushing yards

Charles Page High School senior running back Payton Scott set the all-time school rushing record Friday night with a 507-yard seven-touchdown performance against Bartlesville (1-7, 1-4), but the performance was just the latest rung on the never-ending ladder of his incredible career. 

Scott's week nine performance brought his season stats to 2,160 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns on 285 carries, and his career stats to 5,090 yards and 58 scores on 788 carries. That's not even including his receiving career which stands at 31 catches for 449 yards and three touchdowns. Tack on nine kick returns for 203 yards and the deceptively small athlete averages 6.93 yards every time he touches the ball.

Standing at a mere 5'5" 180 pounds, to the untrained eye he might not look like much of a threat. However, the 152-pound defending State Champion wrestler is 100% muscle and 100% motivation, combining for the strength of two men. Not just any two men, but two men straight out of the Olympics. 

Scott's abilities have only continued to improve as time goes on and this season alone he averages 7.58 yards per carry, a notable improvement over his already impressive 5.5 yards per carry last season. The always dependable athlete has accounted for 73% of the Sandites' total offensive yardage this year, handling 71% of the carries and 59% of the total plays. He holds the top-two single-game performances in town history.

One thing is for sure, the Sandites (5-4, 3-2) will need every inch of his abilities to defeat the three-time defending State Champions from Bixby (5-4, 4-1) this coming Friday. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. and pending the final week of district action, it could be the last time he and 24 other senior Sandites play under the Memorial Stadium lights.

CPHS Football: Payton Scott runs for school-record 507 yards in 55-13 victory over Bartlesville

The No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School football team (5-4, 3-2) needed just one more win to make the playoffs, and they found it with style in a 55-13 performance against No. 13 Bartlesville (1-7, 1-4). 5'5" senior running back Payton Scott had already set the school's single-game rushing record with 352 yards in a week-four bout with Sapulpa. He completely shattered his own record against Bartlesville with 47 carries for 507 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Sandites got off to a great start thanks to their powerful run game and a fumble recovery from Luke Bratcher. Both teams exchanged punts on their opening possessions, then the Sandites went to work. Scott carried eight times for 74 yards, aided by a facemask penalty, and scored the opening points on a five-yard run. Jaden Weiser kicked the point-after and the Sandites were up 7-0.

Bartlesville would have to wait another 53 seconds before bringing out their offense. Kaiden Cox’s kick was muffed by Will Walton and recovered by Bratcher for another Sandite possession. This time they needed only three plays to score. Ben Nortey took it eighteen yards for a first down and eight more yards for the touchdown, his second of the season.

The Bruins marched as far as the Sandite 40 before Gage Fain wrapped up Deandre Young at the line of scrimmage for a turnover on downs two plays into the second quarter. Scott came back to the field for three more plays and 55 yards, scoring on a 23-yard run for the 21-0 advantage.

Bartlesville made their way onto the scoreboard on their next possession with a 48-yard pass from Noah Sunday to John Cone, but the Sandites responded with yet another Scott-dominated drive, scoring on a 22-yard run thanks to a big block from Dash Fleischman.

Bartlesville looked threatening to start their next drive, kicking things off with a 22-yard pass to Young, but Kris Edwards and Jerry Lyons teamed up for a thirteen-yard sack to push them right back into their territory. Fain drilled Cone on a short screen and Joel Mackey broke up a deep ball to force a punt.

Once again the Sandites were insatiable as the two running backs traded off runs to combine for a 75-yard drive capped by a 32-yard touchdown carry from Scott through a hole created by Cameron Lierly and Nicolas Hancock. 

The Sandite Defense did their best to stave off the Bruins’ next possession but the visitors ate up the last 3:20 and scored an eleven-yard pass to Bradley Crawford as time expired. After a bad snap forced a two-point pass attempt, Bratcher picked it off in the endzone to end the half 35-13.

The second half didn’t start off any better for the Bruins, who threw an interception to Hyatt Cartwright on the third play of the opening drive. Scott made the most of it, driving 70 yards in eight plays for a five-yard touchdown run and 42-13 lead. 

Bartlesville was held to a quick three-and-out and Scott broke his previous record on an eight-yard run. Three carries later and he scored his sixth touchdown on a nine-yard carry. 

Another unsuccessful drive from the Bruins and Scott went right back to work with a 67-yard drive in five carries to end the third quarter with the final points of the game and 195 yards in that stanza alone. 

Even the Sandite JV was too much for the Bruins and time ran out with Bartlesville held at the Sandite sixteen yard line. 

The Sandites will next host No. 4 Bixby (5-4, 4-1) who was shut out 21-0 by No. 1 Booker T. Washington (8-1, 5-0), clinching the District Two Championship for the Hornets. The three-time defending State Champions will roll into Sand Springs Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Sandite of the Week Hayden Cramer leads Sandite defense in total tackles

Charles Page High School junior Hayden Cramer was selected as our Sandite of the Week for his consistent outstanding performance on the Sandite defense this season. The 5'10" 200-pound linebacker has led his team in total tackles in seven of eight games this season and has 76 for the season.

In the first game of the season the Sandites were trounced 59-21 by nationally-ranked No. 45 Pulaski Academy (8-0). Cramer led the team with eight tackles and two pass breakups. 

In week two the Sandites were upset 21-20 No. 9 Choctaw (4-4). Cramer recorded eight tackles, one for a loss of three yards. He also had a six-yard interception return and one pass breakup.

In week three the Sandites notched their first win 28-14 over No. 12 Putnam City West (1-7), led by Cramer with eleven tackles. In week four they recorded a 31-16 rivalry win over No. 15 Sapulpa (1-7, 1-4) led by Cramer with nine tackles and one tackle for a loss of three yards. 

Week five was another double-digit effort from Cramer, who recorded ten tackles in a 26-21 victory at 6A-1 Yukon (4-4). In week six he recorded seven tackles, including a twelve-yard sack, in a 41-7 beatdown of No. 14 Ponca City (1-7, 1-4). 

Two weeks ago the Sandites fell off their winning streak in a 40-34 shootout against No. 6 Muskogee (3-4, 2-2) despite a season-best thirteen-tackle performance from Cramer that included one tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. Last week the Sandites were shut out 40-0 by No. 1 Booker T. Washington (7-1) and Cramer recorded ten tackles, one for loss, and one pass breakup. 

The Sandites are currently ranked No. 8 in Class 6A-II with a 4-4 record overall and a 2-2 district record. They are fourth in district standings with two games left. The three teams behind Sand Springs are Bartlesville (1-6, 1-3), Sapulpa, and Ponca.

Only No. 13 Bartlesville has the potential to knock Sand Springs out of the post-season, and they will get their chance this Friday at Memorial Stadium at 7:00 p.m. If the Sandites win against the Bruins they'll clinch a playoff game. If they lose to Bartlesville they'll have to upset No. 4 Bixby (5-3, 4-0) in the regular-season finale to secure their spot.
