IHSAA Basketball: Former Sandite Kalea Fleming to play for Indiana State Title Saturday

Former Sand Springs youth basketball and cross country star Kalea Fleming is making waves in her current hometown of Loogootee, Indiana. Fleming is now in her junior year at Loogootee High School, and is gearing up for a State Championship game with the Class A No. 1 ranked Loogootee Lions.

The Lions are 26-2 overall in the state’s smallest school classification and have won eight-straight games, all by comfortable margins. They won the Blue Chip Conference title with an 8-0 record, then won the Sectional Championship, Regional Championship, and Semi-State Championship.

Last Saturday Fleming scored a game-high 26 points with the Lions in a 57-40 Semi-State win over Greenwood Christian Academy (23-6). The game is reportedly the first-ever Semi-State win for the Loogootee program.

Fleming was named the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) District Player of the Week for her performance. Her Head Coach, Brian Smith, told the Hoosier Times that she is one of the best players he’s ever been around. Read Murphy Wheeler’s article here.

Fleming received a “Semi-State Top Performer” nomination from the Indy Star newspaper in Indianapolis, and the public poll is located at this link. She is currently sitting in fourth place.

Fleming and her Lions will play No. 4 Pioneer (25-2) at the State Finals in Indianapolis Saturday

After the basketball season concludes Fleming will look to the Spring Track and Field season, where she is one of the top performers in her Region. Last year she placed 2nd in High Jump and 3rd in 800-meter run at the Sectional Track Meet and was 13th in 800-meter run and 4th in High Jump at Regionals. She placed 10th in High Jump at the State Championship.
