Sandite Alumni Report: Riley Weir and Cody Karstetter medal at first tournaments
/Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College freshman Riley Weir (5-1) made his college debut with a third-place performance in the freshman/sophomore 125-pound bracket at the University of Central Oklahoma Open.
Weir recorded two falls, a major decision, and a decision in the tournament, outscoring his foes 48-20. His only loss was a semifinal pin by eventual champion Dallas Wilson. The former Sandite only trailed 4-3 going into the third period before getting stuck on a reversal.
No. 6 ranked NEO will return to action at the Grand View Open in Des Moines Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Weir has earned the No. 8 spot in the 125-pound NJCAA rankings from Intermat Wrestling.
University of Central Oklahoma senior Cody Karstetter (3-1, 41-11) placed second in the 125-pound Open bracket at the UCO Open. He outscored his first two opponents 17-0 with a pin and a major decision before falling 10-1 to Oklahoma State Senior and three-time Big 12 Champion Nick Piccininni.
Karstetter also picked up an 8-3 decision in No. 13 UCO’s 41-3 win over Drury (0-1) in the first dual of the season. The Bronchos will compete at the Lindenwood Open Saturday, November 23rd.
Oklahoma State University sophomore and Big 12 Champion Daton Fix (40-2) is taking an Olympic Redshirt this season to focus on his freestyle development. The Olympic Trials will be held April 4-5 in University Park, Pennsylvania.
